  • From galactic space misadventures to exploring the human body, The Magic School Bus will always be one of the most beloved educational cartoons from the 90s. But now that we're a little bit older and a whole lot wiser, some of the lessons we learned from this PBS classic seem incredibly illogical and almost downright wrong. So take a ride on the Magic School Bus and find out the top 10 lessons that Miss Frizzle got wrong.

    Translation of Ms. Frizzle's motto:
    "Take chances,..." = Give everything at least a try.
    "...make mistakes,..." = Learn from what doesn't work.
    "...get messy!" = Be hands on and get real experience.
    That's a beautiful message. I don't see what's wrong with it.

      @carultch 8 лет назад +1

      +LEDN42
      By that motto, should I mix ammonia and bleach to see what happens, without any safety precautions?
      If I do that, I know it will make poisonous Chlorine gas, that will be deadly. But if I didn't know that, I'd be taking chances, making mistakes, and getting messy. Obviously, there needs to be some standard of safety to avoid too dangerous of mistakes.

      +carultch there's a difference between following Ms. Frizzle's motto and being stupid

    • @virgilio6349
      @virgilio6349 8 лет назад +8

      +carultch Well someone had to mix those two in the first place to know it would create Chlorine gas. If that person hadn't took the chances, made mistakes, and got messy then you and many others wouldn't know about it and a lot of people would have died trying to know.

      +LEDN42 They weren't being scientists. Ms. Frizzle already knew the answers. She just wanted them to see things first hand.

      Yeah, I feel that half of these lessons are just deliberately misunderstood and taken out of context. Complaining that a kids show doesn't accurately depict quantum principles doesn't really have a point, this show sparked interest in science for kids, that's kind of worth more than any number of elssons in scientific rigor.

  • @SilverGummiShark
    @SilverGummiShark 8 лет назад +157

    Some of these aren't really the series' fault... it's the fact that scientists discovered new data since the books were written and the show created in light of those...but fair point for a lot of these, lol.

      +Kitakaze Lynn Most of them are either what you said, or slight simplifications for the sake of clarity in a short kids show episode. Like the nitpick about the light episode was ridiculous. I think this guy was only right about a few of these points.

    "Take chances, Get messy, make mistakes" is how you learn, not part of the scientific method. It stimulates your brain and provides lots of learning opportunity.

    • @Samperdog
      @Samperdog 8 лет назад +86

      +Roscoe Kane Actually, that is pretty close to how most cutting edge science works. Very rarely, if ever, does a research go "I think this is going to happen so I'm going to test it". More often than not it's "Hum, I wonder what happens if I do this thing".

    • @Tegral_Entertainment
      @Tegral_Entertainment 8 лет назад +65

      +Roscoe Kane also it's specifically part of the scientific method. If scientists never toook chances we would never learn anything new. Period.

    • @Areya-Sunshine
      @Areya-Sunshine 8 лет назад +48

      +Samperdog Agreed. Most of science is trial and error. If no one took chances, made mistakes, and got messy, we wouldn't have many of the scientific advances that many of us take for granted today. The truth is most of the time, even highly educated scientists with plenty of experience aren't going to know what's going to happen in an experiment if they are trying something new. In order for progress to be made, we often have to venture out into uncharted territory and 'take chances' (with all the necessary precautions we can get of course). So I would say that that is a quite true and valuable lesson for our future scientists. I'll keep that one. :)

    ok to be fair, that saying "take chances, make mistakes, and get messy" was probably a lesson relating to life in general rather than specifically to scientific research. it's actually a really good aesop this way; saying that it's good to get out of your comfort zone and explore the world around you

      Exactly. And the show was targeted toward young children (which is when I watched it.) It suffers from oversimplification; not being inaccurate. The whole point of the books and show was to explain relatively complex science to elementary school-aged students.
      I don't remember the person who said it, but they said that education is a series of lies. When you're young you are told certain lies (that are basically true) and the facts are slowly revealed as you age. When you're being taught basic arithmetic, you aren't told the nuances of calculus. It comes with time.

      And pretty much everyone who uses introverted Sensing anywhere in their cognitive function stack is going to cry foul to that. Extroverted Sensing and introverted Sensing tend to be at odds on the whole idea of popping up and diving in without at least looking first to see what you're leaping into. And the Friz uses extroverted Sensing as her dominant cognitive function. She probably came up with that motto when she was a preteen. And just as likely caused a lot of problems when she was a kid, albeit without any actual rebellious intent, unlike many other Se-doms.

      Alright. Come by my place - I'll whip you up a plate full of nearly uncooked ingredients, and I don't want you to bitch or complain about my food since you're not a chef c:

      And afterwards, I'll give you an alcoholic beverage. Where nearly 85% of it is alcohol. Don't point out anything wrong with that either - You're not a scientist :3

    I think some of these points were a bit weak...
    #7: Pluto was a planet at the time; our definition of "planet" has been revised since then. To say that this fact is "wrong" is being a bit harsh, especially when the debate has been brought back, and there's talk of reinstating Pluto's planet status. I think that this should be knocked down to #10, if kept on this list at all.
    #3: I'm pretty sure he was speaking generally, and in reference to wild animals. As long as you're not too literal-minded about this, the guy from the cartoon brings up a good point: animals aren't (from a purely scientific standpoint, mind you) "good" or "bad" - they're just parts of an ecosystem. They can be dangerous, but not out of malice; only because they're programmed by nature to hunt or protect themselves.
    #1: Edison once stated that, in his experiments to create the light bulb, he had not failed 10,000 times; he merely discovered 10,000 ways to NOT create the light bulb. I think that's what Frizzle was trying to say; sometimes when you experiment, you need to come up with a hypothesis, test it, and not flip out if your hypothesis was incorrect. Science and discovery are DEPENDENT upon making mistakes.

      Completely agree. Though I would go a different route with 1. If you consider the target audience for the show, I think this is a great lesson to be teaching them. It's a life lesson not a scientific one, and It's one of the most important things you could ever learn in order to be successful regardless of the field you choose to go into.

      +SomeCartoonChick Frankly, Ms. Frizzle should have taught about the wavelengths, I even have a lesson a third grader could learn
      Alright class, today we're learning about colors. (introductory jargon, segue into this) Well, did you know that your eye can only see three colors? (children are outraged) Yes. Your eye only sees the colors red, green and blue. (child raises his/her hand and asks something along the line of "Oh yeah, teacher? Well how come I can see [color]?") Because your brain says so. When your brain sees the color, let's say, brown, its actually seeing a mixture of red green and blue (not 100% scientifically accurate but they're kids sooooooooo) and then the brain takes the mixture and says "Ok, this is brown" (the whole classroom has their minds blown into orbit by now) And class, what do you think uses that to it's advantage that you see in your daily life? (class tries to answer, if they fail a lot just say it, otherwise use the answer to segue) [word limit]

    • @strengthman600
      @strengthman600 8 лет назад +6

      +Sammy [Thats right!] computers use this little trick to display color. (show a blank color on an electronic of some sort) what color is this (the students answer whatever they answer, then you show them a pixel, but really zoomed in, ie red green and blue lights.) This is that color, but zoomed in all the way. Next, get some "experiments" going. Get children into a few groups, give each a pencil and a wheel with the colors green and red on them and a hole in the center. Tell them to put the pencil in the hole and spin the wheel like a top. (when they finally succeed their minds will turn the area into the ground zero of an atomic bomb drop, because it will be yellow
      Then you can do you conclusion jargon, then you've taught children about color perception without going into any quantum physics. And my god was that hard to type

      It is also actually a good science lesson as well. The video just uses dumb nonsense rhetoric to try to say it's not. Science it's about both experimentation and analysis. "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy" is valuable to the experimentation part. The video tries to argue that science is only the controlled analytical part, which is untrue.

    Your analysis of "take chances, make mistakes, get messy" is totally wrong. This message isn't directed at adults it is directed at children. The best way for a child's mind to be as plastic as possible is to allow the child to explore and fail. Neil deGrasse Tyson has advocated getting out of the way and letting kids explore many times.
    As for your sodium in water proposal. That is exactly what Thunderf00t (Dr. Phil Mason)did! He asked "but why does it explode" and after lots of mistakes and many explosions he published an answer. The answer isn't at all what people were taught in school.
    Your point is only a good one if you assume that a child will never learn and grow. Even adults can benefit form a bit of making mistakes and getting messy. A curious mind is a valuable mind. The mind that never asks "but why" isn't a useful one.

      I posted a comment very similar to this one where I described the discovery method of science, which is very valuable and allows our understanding to flourish. Instead of the scientific method, the discovery method is when someone simply asks why, then finds out. A very prominent example is the human genome project. No hypotheses... just find the sequence. It has fundamentally changed many aspects of our lives, but it was science without a scientific method. Miss Frizzles message is simply to try and try again and discovery will happen. Heck, Thomas Edison found 1000 ways not to make a lightbulb, right?

      But children can still be put in dangerous situations, so the "take chances, make mistakes, get messy" shouldn't be applied in all situations. I think that children should still be allowed to explore and experiment, but still take caution and put safety first. Sorry if I'm over analyzing, I think more specifically than generally.

    First three words of definition of plasma: "an ionized gas"
    Plasma exhibits different properties to non-ionized gases, hence it being a distinct state of matter, but it's still a gas.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 8 лет назад +10

      +seigeengine
      Defining a plasma as an ionized gas, is like defining a liquid as a melted solid.
      They only define it that way, because it is difficult to define a state of matter with which you aren't familiar. Of all the matter phases, it most closely resembles a gas.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 8 лет назад +13

      carultch Yes, and no.
      It's important, first of all, to remember that states of matter are generalized simplifications we make to understand how matter behaves, not absolute descriptions of reality, and they can get incredibly messy, especially as you get further into the details.
      Plasmas are definitely distinct from non-ionized gases, but arguing that ionization is the equivalent of melting requires more than you simply saying we're not familiar with it.
      I have yet to see any compelling reason to not say there are solids, liquids, non-ionized and ionized gasses, aside from shoehorning new knowledge into an older classification. Not that I'm arguing we should refer to them this way, but rather mostly that it annoys the shit out of me every time I hear someone say something to the tune of "well, actually, it's a plasma, not a gas."

      +Israel Grogin Actually, this assumes that the levels of red and blue light are exactly equal. A computer can emulate this no problem, since the values for red and blue are easy to display. In nature, however, it's far more difficult for living creatures to produce equal levels of blue and red pigments. They evolved to display more of one color than they other. It's why red onions have a red violet tint, and why eggplants seem more blue violet. Technically, anything displaying blue and red simultaneously can be pretty much any tint or shade of pink, magenta, lavender, violet, and purple.

    • @fireanttfanboy2651
      @fireanttfanboy2651 8 лет назад

      Madeline Spencer Since blue has a quicker wave length, so you will get a darker shade of purple, lavender, and magenta. But if you are wanting to get scientific, then it is none of those coulo(u)rs. Our eyes have colo(u)r refracters the shape of cones, so because of the angle and the simotanious transfers of which colo(u)r is which, our brain registers it as the colo(u)r it is NOT. It reflects it because it can't reflect all 32,000 other colo(u)rs at once.

    mmmmmm wrong on the last bit, one of the greatest fundements of science is the imperical method, that is, trial and error which in another way of saying means 'take chances, make mistakes, get messy' you 'take a chance' you your hypothosis you 'make mistakes' in the progress of testing it, 'getting messy' [in the case of biological and chemical siences at least] in the process, you then learn from those mistakes, refine your technique, and try again till you get it right...if scientists waited till they had eliminated all risk before attempting something they would be rendered redundent as all risk wouldnt be eliminated till someone had already sucseeded at it...and if someone has already sucseeded then further testing ins pointless, as your hypothosis has already been proven.

    Published on 19 Jan 2016? Pluto has gained back it's status as a planet as of this date. Also, a "dwarf planet" is still a planet notated by the word "planet". A dwarf human doesn't become a non-human just because you add an adjective...

    • @NathanTAK
      @NathanTAK 8 лет назад +5

      +RealCoolGuy Ah, yes. A false analogy.
      Dwarf planets are not planets, they just have the word "planet" in the name- and they aren't necessarily called "dwarf planets", sometimes the term "plutoid" is prefered.
      And it did NOT gain back that status, LTIC.

    • @RealCoolGuy
      @RealCoolGuy 8 лет назад +2

      Nathan T I guess that depends on who you consider the governing authority on planetary status. According to the Harvard Origins of Life Initiative, Pluto is a planet.
      And here is NASA's description of Pluto: "Today, Pluto is called a “dwarf planet.” A dwarf planet orbits the sun just like other planets, but it is smaller."
      So...it's a small planet...
      From an etymological perspective, if a "dwarf planet" is not to be considered a planet then change the name. (I've never heard the term "Plutoid" until presently but I assume that is a reference to Pluto, which doesn't provide much differentiation--especially if Pluto is considered a planet--or a smaller than regular-size planet).

      Not how it works. "Planet" has a specific definition, which Pluto doesn't meet. Science doesn't work the way you seem to be implying, odonticetti are called toothed-whales, but they aren't true whales. African wild dogs are called dogs, but they aren't true dogs. Brown Dwarfs aren't dwarf stars etc. NASA is a national agency for one country who's specialty is engineering and space flight, the IAU is an international organization of astronomers who specialize in astronomy. That's like saying the US Air Force has the authority to make universal definitions in aerodynamics, rather than international organizations of physicists who actually study aerodynamics.
      Besides, there's no such thing as a "dwarf" human, dwarfs are mythological beings out of Norse folklore. Animals, including humans, suffer from "dwarfism", which is a condition.
      Case closed.

I grew up with the Magic School Bus, and it still has a place in my heart. However, that doesn't leave it immune to criticism regarding what it got wrong. Still, as a show for children, I think it's very good overall. I would hope no one would try to use it to pass a test.

    Also comparing facts that we know now, vs when the show was made is also not fair. If the show were made now these things would be updated and wouldn't be wrong. They were right for when the show was made in those cases. This whole list is kind of silly the more I'm analyzing this.

If you guys don't know what that is, a rogue planet is a planet that was flung from it's solar system, or asteroid belt (if It's big enough), and has entered a new solar system. The ninth planet would have an erratic, or very slim orbit, which would explain how we haven't seen it yet, suggesting it could have been caught in the sun's gravitational field.

      when the shows were being made, matter only had 3 states, plasma was only adopted as a state of matter in the mid 2000's.

      Maybe i shouldn't have used the word "flaw" liberally? eh... though I'd like to half disagree with you on your second sentence.
      people once thought that the world was flat, or that the sun orbited the earth (so on so forth)... these were then proven to be false later on, but could you have considered their logic at the time was.... well... not.. false?
      I'll admit there are exceptions to what I've said... quite plenty, actually.

      +derepa06 I think it's nitpicky for clicks. (That's a reason.) But I clicked Like not for the nitpicky, but because: Science *does* change. I think it's worth it to occasionally analyze (and for sure to *question*) any and all popularized science thinges.
      In the effort to make the knowledge more accessible, mistakes often creep in.
      Nitpicking those, IMHO, is not pointless. It acts as a jumping off point for more discussion, more insight and, ultimately more *understanding* of the subject.
      Having more knowledge and more understanding of a topic is *always* worth it. #Ravenclaw.

    • @derepa06
      @derepa06 8 лет назад +1

      I. Wyrd Well maybe it would have been better to say for no good reason. This show was made for kids. I just feel like half the things on this list, even if technically right, don't take into account that this show was made to educate elementary school age students. If you evaluate these lessons as an adult then of course you're gonna find flaws in them because you can understand the concepts better (well you should be able to) without the simplifications that kids require.
      An adult with adult understanding and 22 years of technological advancement pointing out oversimplifications in a child's show that's over two decades old... Yeah i'd label that as nitpicking.
      LOL. I think of myself as a Ravenclaw as well. LOL

And last, "take chances, make mistakes, get messy." Should be understood as a method of learning, not as a method of conducting science, just like you said, imagine if scientists used that philosophy when conducting science, imagine if every school used that philosophy, don't you think that would be a better method of learning then simply teaching kids how to jump through hoops, a.k.a. read this and answer these questions. No attempt at all whatsoever to get kids thinking creatively, problem-solving or anything of that sort.

    Actually, all matter can travel as waves and particles. But the wavelength (de Broglie wavelength) varies inversely with mass, so it'd be super hard to detect for someone as large as a person.

    Here's something I was wondering about. When it comes to Pluto not being an official planet because its orbit overlaps Neptune's orbit, what if in the future we find that this is more normal than we think. If we discover that most other solar systems have objects that overlap eachother's orbits and that systems without overlapping like ours are rare, I'm thinking that they will have to change the definition of what a planet is.

    you forgot about the dinosaur one. They said that dinosaurs where millions of years old when that's not true and it was really thousands of years. AND PLUTO IS A PLANNET! I'M SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE SATING PLUTO IS NOT A PLANNET! IT IS!

      Planet, not planet...meh, for me, it's a celestial body, and it's interesting to study. Period.
      Just the fact that Pluto meets the 2nd requirement is really fascinating, to me. ^^

    Cool video from the perspective of understanding the science behind it, however this is a children's show and they are teaching the basics of science, in which in later years when they have a better foundation to understand and build upon. Like what they teach in early years of school isn't always right, its just a concept to prepare one.

      +Mino1777 Wrong. Yes, Pluto is bigger than expected, which makes it the biggest Kuiper belt object, but that doesn't matter; the definition of a planet it's for it's mass to dominate it's local orbital ring, since the Kuiper belt, has many more objects of similar mass, then it doesn't count; same with Ceres or Eris. Now the so called Planet X is a hypothesis from the past century, however scientist now have run different advanced simulations consistent with the object (It somehow explains a discrepancy in Jupiter's orbit). If it exists, is not part of the Kuiper belt, but rather forms an extremely eccentric orbit that isn't parallel to the other planets, so we wouldn't have detected it yet, since we only looked for new objects on the main plane of the solar system, and it would be so dim, only very advanced telescopes would be able to detect anyway (unless it's in it's perigee, which happens for a short period and takes a couple hundred years to repeat). So scientist are looking for it and it is accurate to call it that, since it doesn't share it's orbit with another similarly sized object, it's mass would be enough to make it a spheroid and it orbits the sun.

      +Ghastslayer914 yup and isn't that (a small) part of the reason they decided Pluto wasn't a planet anymore? I could be wrong, but I thought that since one of it's moons was like a third the size of Pluto itself, it was another reason to put it in a separate category than planet.

      The experts. Astrophysicists, astronomers, etc. They voted within the IAU. Ok, ok, there was a low percentage of the experts at this vote...but as we say in french "les absents ont toujours tort" (those who are absent are always wrong)

    What is plasma?
    Hot gas...
    Does it hold different properties than gas?
    Not really...
    *Edit*
    By the logic that plasma is a completely different state of matter than gas, I guess if you ionize a solid it magically becomes a new state of matter too, right?
    Oh wait, it doesn't.

      It does, actually! Plasmas are susceptible to magnetic fields and will serve as conduits for electric current. They also have applications in antimicrobial research. The degree of change that takes place for a gas to become a plasma is comparable to the change for any other phase change, on average.

    This video is ridiculous you're dissecting a children's cartoon that had minor educational elements as though its a textbook I don't think a program which feature "magic school bus" in the title, that unabashedly show cases a flying, shrinking and generally physics defying bus should be taken seriously. Also it was designed to simplify complex scientific concepts for small children, explaining that light bends in the presence of extreme gravitational forces isn't possible to conceptualise to a child trying to understand how shadows exist. You've definitely not gained a subscriber.
