The point of the story is not loving someone but yourself in the first place. When you feel contend with yourself then only thing that you can feel is pure love. Loving someone is not finding a piece that's missing but giving you as a whole and accepting as a whole. Love is like a sail ship one person holds the sail and other one holds the rudder. And together you set sail to a whole new adventure and the destination is a new form of existence. Neither you nor lover but finding US.

    I love this story!!!
It's not meant to be sad at all; it just honestly portrays the journey everyone goes through trying to find themselves.

Yeah this "little" story tells more about life and relationships than possibly any other , deep is an understatement

Shel Silverstein is severely underappreciated. He was a great cartoonist, travel writer, poet, songwriter, performer, and those were just the things he did before he started writing children's books.

I think the big O is whoever or whatever inspires you in life to find and be yourself.
This is so simple yet so inspirational, I just love it so much.

When my English professor read this story in class.. I got struck!
It was so mind opening and inspiring!
We all came to this point in life where we feel like we're incomplete or someone's missing piece
We try to be " someone" to be recognized or try to fit in..
We meet different people.. some see us some don't...
    others come and go..
We just need to meet our Big O to help us realize we are already whole..and that we don't need anyone or anything to make us whole..

What I love about Shel Silversteins books is that he knew how to put such distressing or burdensome life problems into a form that (almost) everyone, even young children can grasp. He broke things down to their simplest form, in words and his art. While youre reading a seemingly silly story about a wedge trying to fit somewhere, a light goes on in your head, and all of a sudden you understand profoundly what he's trying to teach.
And I always tear up, dammit.
    We'll always miss you Shel.

These two books tell the story of my life. This affected me so deeply. Shel Silverstein writes books that simply tell a story of life.

I think everyone needs to watch this, no matter what.
I think that, in the end, the one who fits us just right isn't who we're looking for...but the one who will teach us to grow and change for the better, so we can roll on our own, and then roll beside someone. I think that instead of looking for the one who "fits us just right", we should be looking for our own "Big O". ♥

I totally agree with linlrienelen above - Shel lived in the same world we do - a world fraught with problems but also with hops, the hope of man's good and kind heart. I love his ability to poke fun and get us to smile, whisper and get us to listen, sniff and get us to cry, what Shel Silverstein was - in fact - brilliant - he got us to realize and understand and take action. To make change. Gold bless you Shel!

i think the "missing piece" is someone who is looking for the right "guy" or "girl" to be with. And Maybe, The Big O is someone who is very strong, and he gave the missing piece advice.
he gave him advice that you dont need a lover to feel whole, you just have to role on with life, and if someone wants to be in your life, they will.
    everything happends for a reason.

    This is real inspiring...
I'm close to 30 years old, but still feel missing.
But maybe Before looking for my missing piece,
I need to be "whole" by myself and proactive.
Fortunately, I got the chance to stay abroad for 1 year.
I will try to be "whole"

Craig's one of my favorite pianists. I stumbled across his music many years ago while vacationing in San Clemente, CA. If you like his music I would recommend his other albums: Ventana, Fields In Bloom, Special Place and for Christmas I really love "What Child Is This", "Winter Rose" and "In Excelsis Deo: A Christmas Collection".
Hopefully they bless you as much as they've blessed me.

  • @snoref

@vjexman I think your missing the point, the story is trying to tell us that we need to be "whole" before we can happy. Relying for someone or something to come along to make you "whole" is not the answer. You need to proactive. It's about establishing a strong base (rolling by yourself) and then you can go out into the world and seek what you want to make you happy/"whole". Complex desires and plans can be achieved once your fundamentally stable and complete as a person.

it's like every of these messages... its not perfekt, some cases are missing... you can't get everything, humans are too complex...
but it has a beatiful message... people that think, they can't find the right one, but also what is most important people who cant get over someone and people who have 2 new boy or girl friends a week, should think about it

in my own opinion, i think that WE are the missing piece and GOD is the big O, at first we are looking for someone to depend on. we tried to get the attention of others, like being a member of a group of friends, we are trying to get their attention in order for us to join their group, but when we met GOD we immediately think that He is the perfect being like the BIG "O" he gave us advice and He told us that we should move on our own and stand on our feet to be able to meet with Him someday. :)

The Missing Piece Meets the Big O this is a good theory but only if you are afraid or not willing to commit. or you have a phobia of commitment , this will solve your current way of thinking, with minimal change, see if you find a piece that fits and they grow and you don't, or the opposite this theory works . but here is the truth, if the piece fits and you grow together you can keep on rolling and be in a balanced way of life , for more or better definition see life is balance not ment to be solo, life itself is male and female joined , life is yin and yang not just one , our bodies are built with the same balance if a muscle is injured the other will compensate. also everything around, is balance if you can find true balance life rolls on pretty easy , now if one piece grows, and the other does not to maintain balance that piece if patient and helpful or communication is presence then the two pieces can grow and then you again roll together , see life and relationships are a balance, as life is , and the world all around us,( up / down), ( right /left ), (light/dark),(happy/sad), (strong/weak), (fast/slow), (love/hate), (in/out), (scared/wise), (positive/negative),(soft/hard), (hopeful/despair), (growth/wither), (big/small), (good/evil), (relax/tense), (hot/cold) and so on ! See my point if you are willing to balance together then you can roll fine and if you have patience you can watch one grow and enjoy what you both have accomplished with out missing the meaning of life, which is to enjoy it together. either way to know your strong enough to change is great if you feel that is your way and not having to worry about the togetherness of joining and growing together . so this interpretation. is correct on a singular level and being strong as a single person , but if you change who knows you might miss out on what was destine for you you have to come to the decision that life is never easy nor perfect growth is inevitable, even as a single "O" you might over shadow the other "o" and push it away for it wont grow with out light when your blocking it , see if your joined you get light evenly . and then again grow together my point is learn your own issues and then you will understand it takes two for balance not one. all the one is that it no longer is willing to accept or unable to accept truly only to defend its circle for there is now a completeness that feels fine with out knowing that there is a way to join, and be balanced instead of holding on to your own circle and its safe that way , but you miss out on the truth of balance (life/death),(complete/missing), and cherishing the truth life is a balance not ment to be experienced alone life is a cycle not just a line point (A)TO-(B), it's a balance in everything, (man/woman), (male/female) love is strong enough to balance out even( two wedges) meaning male/male or female/female,if you are willing to be patience, and communicate and work together to roll as one. this is just something or another way

Maybe the Big O represents God, our ideal self in it's full state, that of completeness, eternity in the void of the circle, the perfect outline bordering the unseen, rolling/moving/transitioning with grace And yet we are the geometric, earth bound, language obsessed, limited and triangulating plops. bordering on pointy resolve, static, stuck, trapped. The various pac-man -its that come along in this heartfelt passage are those things disguised as God, presenting themselves as ideals but offer no concrete role in a solid individuation process. Only through downtime and long pause can we fully let the light in. Shel does this in "The Giving Tree" as well.... "After a long time the boy came back,etc... I think seeking and searching is good, I think harmony with others is good. So many options in this world, perhaps deep contemplation and simplicity will help us all to feel Shel's "O"... Work smarter, not harder, and may the skateboard appear in life!
