    My ancestor named Folivao by the people of Futuna was the son of a cikobian woman and an american. His son, Samu Lavelua Keletaona became High chief in the kingdom of sigave Futuna. Someday I will travel to cikobia to reconnect with a part of my History. Nowadays, the king of sigave is still a Keletaona. Thanks for this vidéo and Alofa atu. Kai Futuna !

      Malo and bula re. Great hearing about your history and the connections to us. According to archeological, linguistic findings and earlier anthropological studies; Cikobia, Futuna and Naqelelevu are traditionally veiwekani or family. We form a Fiji West Polynesian triangle. Hope you can make the trip to the island. Hook me up if u are and I will organize your accommodation on the island. Always great to hear from family. A visit to Futuna is also on my bucket list. Vinaka and lolomas.

    My father had always travelled to Cikobia during his working days in the 70's and the 80's. He always returns with Coconut Crabs from the island. I've always wondered what this island looked like, and thanks to this video which has fulfilled my wishes. I'm also thankful and proud that the narrator of this video is my niece through her mom from Matuku. It's not only that now I've seen the island I've always longed to see, but that I also have a connection to it through my blood. GOD bless the Cagituevei Family and Cikobia Island and it's people. Bula re.

    Well it is real nice to see Cikobia Island, Macuata. What I was being told by my distance relatives that my great grandmother was from Cikobia. There were 3 sister. One of which the chief of Macuata linage came from, the other of which my family from Karoko did appear and the other I have forgotten. Probably someone can fit all my details. I taught in Cikobia District School in 1997.

    My Grandad was a missionary to Cikobia Island on numerous occasions. His name is the late Rev Erami Kabuyawa. He founded the AOG congregation in Cikobia Is.
    I got to witness the Coconut crab (Ugalevu) & tasted it as well whenever he comes home. It's like the signature food for this beautiful Island. Heard tales of this special island and to top it off, I got to meet & heard the story from the lady herself (Tara), who swam during the capsize of the boat that was bound for Labasa and got drifted to Nukusa village shores. She came home with her husband (Turaga ni Moce, Lau) & I got to spend nights of tales from this beautiful Island. The laughter, challenges & of course the struggles that they're going through. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she share those near-death experiences that she face on that unforgettable night. I am honoured to come across such beautiful people who have a lot to offer than life itself, who have more experience in life & to some extent that some of us & I myself didn't go through in life.
    I would really love to visit this island someday.
    It is, really a blessing my sister to see this video.

    its possible Cikobia and Tikopia and Yanuca and Anuta have some significant historical connections.

    • @peninawaqatabu8736
      @peninawaqatabu8736  2 года назад +2

      Yes there is a huge possibility that Yanuca and Cikobia are historically linked to these Polynesian outliers in the Solomon Islands; namely Tikopia and Anuta. According to linguists Paul Geraghty, many place names were formed as indicators of its environment that prevailed when the places were being named. These linguistic factors reveal the diasporic movements of our ancestors as they traversed the seas.

      Bula re Isoa,
      I am not familiar with the specific burial site but I am aware that he is part of my family from Vatulele village. He was married to the late Se which she is commonly known by. Whilst the late Robinson was married to kuku Se; he also had a child with Kuku Galevu and their son- Ropate. That's about all that I know of his history in Cikobia. Maybe the intimate families can elaborate on this.

    Bula Re Penina, what a beautiful showcase of your island. The only reference i had previously of Cikobia is when Cyclones strike the northern parts of Fiji. Your island being the most remote of northern islands usually cops it the worst and i would be fretting for you guys. But i could tell you guys are resilient resourceful survivors. Also your joyful songs like, Pakiakia, Na Manumanu vuka etc tells me that you guys have developed a resilience to your remote adversities over millennia. I also could tell by the faces on Cikobia that its a bit of a melting pot of the Pacific from the ancient explorers to modern day europeans. Could you pls give me more info on the reference of 1615 on your school welcome board. Moce Yaqe 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 🇫🇯 🙏🏾

      Bula re and vinaa for the kind words! Yes Cikobia- its geographically isolated, sparsely populated and susceptible to worst hurricanes ever. However; it's one of the most heavenly places on earth! My ancestors were brilliant architects and navigators and evidence of their ingenuity is still evident around the island. One example is an earliest site on Namasi- a hill fortification used as a defensive site during a period of war in Fiji. 1615 on the school board is just a district number. There is only a primary school on the island. Cikobia district school was established in 1957. I hope that's suffice! Vinaka for watching.

      @@peninawaqatabu8736 Bula re wantok. I'm sorry I've lost contact with him but I remember we call him Tevita. He should be around 30 years old now. He went to USP 5-8 years back, is an Anglican member and a grog champion drinker...🤣🤣...He also can swear a lot 🤣🤣 but I believe he is a changed person now.
      Anyway, how far is Cikobia island to mainland Vanua Levu by boat? Do you get on a boat at Udu point?
      I've been to Savusavu, Labasa and the surrounding villages but I feel I still miss a lot of places from the 'Friendly North' including Cikobia island.

    • @peninawaqatabu8736

      @@tawirandy9722 hey gang.. that's unfortunate. I'm glad you got to visit a few places here in Fiji. So many students that come to be educated in Fiji either in USP or FNU never get the opportunity to visit those places you mentioned. So yeahh; you're blessed!
      To get to Cikobia, you will travel all the way to Qaranivai, part of Udu and take a fibre boat. Travel hours to the island varies. On a good day: it may take an hour and half or less..BUT you will definitely be navigating through choppy waters! It's like a roller coaster ride but once your feet touch the white sand beach of Cikobia; all your fear and anxiety dismissed. Better put it on your bucket list next time you in Fiji.

    Fijis connect to Samoa during ancient times

    • @peninawaqatabu8736
      @peninawaqatabu8736  2 года назад

      Cikobia’s origins are part of a broader narrative of settlement in Fiji. The Fiji, Samoa and Tonga archipelago was likely the starting point of Polynesian expansion around 1000-900BC, and thus Fijian culture shares a common ancestry with the cultures of Polynesia.
      Movements of people across Oceania in the past not only involved European explorers - Pacific Islanders made regular voyages between islands like Cikobia, and the reasons for these visits varied from short visitation by families to pay homage to a chief or in search of trade such as the Tongans travelling to Fiji for sandalwood. In the context of Cikobia, frequent voyages made to mainland Vanua Levu such as Udu point, Naqelelevu and islands located outside of Fiji such as Futuna were common during the pre-colonial period.
      Even Samoan adzes were found in Cikobia during an archeological dig recently.
