  • On Saturday April 28, 2018, The Fiji Times Senior Feature Writer Sikeli Qounadovu embarked on a journey to Matokana Village deep in the highlands of Navosa, to personally experience the challenges of the people of this village - probably the most remote and isolated in Fiji’s mainland Viti Levu - to be able to tell their story.
    Special acknowledgement to
Master Simeli Druavesi, the Head Teacher of Vakacereivalu Primary School, his two sons Atu, 10, and Epi, 7, and also to the villagers of Matokana for accepting the team from this newspaper.
The Fiji Times also would like to acknowledge the Fiji Roads Authority, that ever since the first story was published on May 8, 2018, road upgrading works have now begun in that village.

Cola Vina, Mr Sikeli I've been to this village with our team of journalists from Fiji Times. I have been to many places in the interior of Navosa. Even the main access roads are not as good to drive on. Would like to thank the previous PM for making the access road to this village 😊.

What a memory I have bro, being the only Hindustani in the team of GEOLOGISTS, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING AS IT WAS IN 1973, not many houses then but a lot more bures. Loved the green kava and bakalolo, and “ nandrava naika and miti “ ,wonderful vudi bananas, & never forgot the smiles of “MAREONI”❤

There are few outlier villages in the province of Nadroga/Navosa, located remotely away from the main commuting routes that makes them hard to reach. Matokana is one of the few villages in Navosa that is situated high up on the montain ridge (extending Noikoro ranges) rather on the valley below as in the case for most villages. Nanoko, Mare, Nasaunokonoko, Tokoni located on the nothwest of the Navatusila range. Thankfully access roads have reached these places.

Dou bula vinaka Sikeli, I was very much touched by your You Tube presentation of Matokana Village in the highlands of Navosa sharing the stories recounted by the villagers of this isolated village. Being born and bred in Fiji but now live in Brisbane, Australia, I still have fond attachments with Fiji since emigrating some 30 years ago and I'm still the deep-rooted kai viti that I love and behold. I simply admire the Primary School teacher who has served seven years at Matokana and become a part of the village with the love and passion to educate the children.. Bless his soul and one can't help but admire such dedication to assist the village in their struggles and amibitions to get ahead. A very great report indeed Sikeli and this presentation has moved me to tears. Thanks for sharing this episode of the daily lives of Fijians who go through hardships that we city-sleekers take for granted just to survive. God bless.

Thank you Sikeli for your kind words. My name is Devlin Chung (formerly Ah Sam) and that is my pseudonym "Soliloquy Nuance" when penning my thoughts and opinion on various matters for publication. I sincerely hope you are able to produce more heart-warming stories of folks with meritorious life experiences. I simply love reading and being in great empathy with people who struggle through life and my Christian beliefs are always stirred to compassion hoping I can help them. God bless!

Damn....You presented better than most news reporter in Fiji.
    You should upload more documentaries...
You just need a Macbook (I Movie) and an Iphone. This is the kind of documentary that FIJI TV / FBC TV need to show for our children.

Mr.Qounadovu, Cola Vinaka and thanks for the upload. It is indeed a struggle to live in that remote part of Fiji but things could be better if roads were made more accessible then villagers tracking on foot or travelling on horse backs. A health center is a must in that village and I hope that the current Government is able to facilitate that. To the teachers there, it is indeed a calling and am so appreciative to you all for standing to the call. To the villagers of Motokana, having viewed the footage by Mr Qounadovu, your village is indeed a heaven on earth. Hang in there and I am very much sure that in the days ahead your prayers will surely be answered. God Bless you all and Loloma from the United States. Moce Viti.

Cola Vinaka my brother and thanks for the update. It is so encouraging to learn that vehicles could be driven upto Matokana village. The villages had a lot of patience and finally their prayers were answered. Credit goes to some good people like you as journalist who become the voice of the people and as a result the Government of the day acted quickly ensuring that the people of Matokana enjoy the ride to their village by road transportation. Vinaka vaka levu again my brother and may the Good Lord continue to shower his blessings on the lovely people back home. God bless you and Loloma from the United States.

Their FBC TV cant even get us a profound documentary like this. The only show they showed on our local TV station is carton , no wonder many have become puppets under their regime just like YOU.

@@korro5870 just talking and making documentaries is not enough you can be happy watching the beautiful scenery but you haven't got the slightest idea how to put them in perspective,
This government came into power few ago and has done so much for the people of fiji and continues to do so in many different sectors where people are benefiting and enjoying at the same time which in Rambukas 14 year's of reign never happened.
We can witness the supply of electricity, water , and many other necessary things that never happened in the past whether be Qarase or rambuka, this fiji first government has delivered wat he promised and your good self is witnessing this changes right before your eyes,
And if you cannot see that than iam afraid you will remain in your mud huts forever in which there's no remedy for it .we are living in the 21st century and you want to go back bringing in the illiterate unlettered people to run the country is a laughable matter,
