Sampras used the open stance backhand a lot , the high ball to the back hand having to move backwards , the backhand return , the fast ball to the back hand and the one you mention . So many situations when you can’t cross that opposite leg
Coaching used to be a part time hobby and interest to me, but due to Covid, I had to do it as a full time job ( I used to work in the aviation industry ). I always find excellent tips and information on your channel. I really appreciate all your videos.
Another exception is to do an open stance backhand on the run (loading on the left leg, for right handers), and you hop onto that same leg after contact. Thiem does this, although it requires more muscle and energy
Gustavo Kuerten = KING of open stance one-handed backhand using a lot of hip rotation (could also be why his career ended prematurely with hip-related injuries).
I just switched to a one hander a couple months ago. I feel like if the ball is closer to your body or if the ball is above your shoulder it’s actually easier for me to hit it with a more open stance and put more spin on the ball.
It can be done and done extremely effective ( I do it from time to time , even when the ball is above my head and I’m on the run.Mind you I’ve been playing tennis for nearly 40 yrs and trying to figure it out( kinda like an upside down forehand/ backhand:) once did (figured it out)and “cracked the code” it becomes rather natural and freaking Awesome and fun shot to hit rather flat or with heavy topspin. Again it’s as if you have two forehand’s. And you know what? if I can do it, just about anybody else can as well. Heck I even got my 16 yr old 5ft tall daughter doing it and she doesn’t really like to play and hardly does. But once she started getting it she even started having fun, then the craziest thing happened…she complemented me”.😲…”your a good teacher father (yeap, she calls me father:) Truth be told- the hardest thing was to get her to play and really try, with effort and with minimal complaining as well as to grasp the essence of what I was conveying (impossible you might be thinking! “A high running open stance backhand down the line or cross court seems hard enough but getting your teenage music,/art loving, book reading nerdy daughter to play…IMPOSSIBLE😊! How did I accomplish such a monumental feat? I asked her to be my “Guinea pig” and I reasoned with her “if I can teach it to you rather easily then I would be able teach it to anyone. doing it like you showed is wrong for open stance, crossing over for the finish will severely restrict rotation and make it impossibile to generate power except from your arm
What are your thoughts about the implementation of the open stance 1H as far as the return is concerned? This is where I see it being a potential weapon.
Great Job Mate!! You know what your Talking about!! Ques: Do you Teach High toss Serve like Alot of girls or Tossing the Ball a little higher than u reach up with your Racquet?? Thanks Mate, Keep up the Good Instruction?? ✌️👍🎾

Yep i do this

Also on return of serve will often be open stance

Closed stance > open stance > not making contact to the ball

Seriously that was interesting and helpful love you
Thank you for this informative video. Everything was well explained. Keep it up!
I disagree. Checkout Boris Becker's backhand serve returns
The other exception is backhand return of serve!
Just what I wanted to know 👍 Thank-you 🎾
But? What if you are cross dominant righty - surely closed stance means relying on incorrect / non dominant eye?
Another exception might be on a return of a very fast serve.
I’ve been able to hit open stance one handers when it’s a fast paced ball and if you don’t have the time. Not ideal at all but out of necessity

Technique is similar to the regular open stance 1-H with less turn and takeback
@@IntuitiveTennis Yeah I watched a short clip of Fed's best return's in 2017 he does some really great things in the open stance return.
I do it often myself. I recall seeing Gasquet and Almagro doing open stance returns on occasion.
Agassi says only closed backhands for 2H as well!
that is why single back hand is not as quick as double back hand,
?
