  • Can you tell the difference between an Aggressive dog and a dog that's just being Reactive?
Dog Aggression and Reactivity has seemed in Increase since Covid-19. This is because we are all awkwardly avoiding each other, Secretly (but not to our dogs) terrified the person we are passing by has the virus. Our dogs are learning to be weary of strangers more and more.
Even if your dog is "perfect" it is important that you can see the difference between these two behaviours in order to keep you and your dog safe.
This video is from the Body Language Section of the Doggett Style 7 elements online dog training series.

So tired of people calling their aggressive, off leash dogs "reactive." Thank you for this. I was trying to prove a point to someone whose dog attacked someone elses, and called them reactive.

I never understood why people say my dog is scared ? My dog has attacked 2 dogs and killed one of them . I don’t think he’s scared seems like he likes to do what he’s trying to do which is kill.

I love this! Thank you so much! What a thorough video with so many different examples. Definitely will be sending this video to all my clients 🙏🏼 Not sure why this video doesn’t have millions of views!!! So good for people to determine the behavior of not only their own dogs but also other peoples dogs!

Love this. Currently have a little devil french bulldog, hair goes up paw goes up, and he goes straight attack, off leash only with males of same age, doesnt happen on leash. Been socialized a lot as a pup and bitten at 7 months old, trying to train him on the aggression

Great idea to post this video and allow folks to determine whether the examples are aggression or reactivity. Thank you.
Both problems can also be solved without the use of aversive methods like choke chains and prong collars. "Balanced" trainers usually say they are good training tools "when used properly" but that's the problem. Most people DO NOT use them "properly" and we end up with injured dogs or dogs who become MORE aggressive. I am a Positive Reinforcement trainer and have had lots of success with both aggression and fear-based reactivity with NO backsliding.

For the issue of people not using these tools properly. I would personally like to see an exam/class that’s mandatory for people to take before they buy any correction tool. Correction tools are fantastic when used for the right dog and used properly, but I definitely think 90% of people overuse them (I use them myself, but I mainly use positive methods before I use a correction to help shape the behavior more)

What kind of dog is your dog in the first clip of the Shepherd barking? I just found a starving lost dog that looks much like your dog. Helpful video. I took in this lost dog. She was in bad shape but is now doing very well. When I finally was able to take her for walks, she didn’t like guys with their service trucks, or workers or walkers along our journey. When in my backyard the neighbor’s dogs would bark at her and she would just look at them and want to run along the fence, yet when we encountered another lady walking her dog on the opposite side of the street, both her dog and my dog started aggressively barking. We distanced and they calmed down. Anyway, I know her a little better and I plan on shorter walks and being more observant before she gets excited. So far with adult family members she is fine and loves to play. She walks pretty much at heel until something triggers her. Probably was mistreated and of course she was starving when I was able to befriend her and gain trust. I think she is going to be a great dog. I just don’t know what she is. Her coloring is B/W with white paws like your dog. I thought maybe a border collie / lab mix??

The dog in the first clip isn’t a border collie/lab mix. I have a border collie/ lab mix and they have longer fur. That dog looks like some kind of bully breed.

@@Reminiscence452 She is actually a sweetheart and very playful. It was obvious that the state I found her in was poor. For that reason she probably doesn’t trust all humans that once bullied her. She will be a great dog over time. She just has come out of chaos into order. 😊

That aussie did exactly what my Australia Sheppard does when people he doesn't know come over... How do I train him not to do that??

My dog is working through excitement reactivity (not extreme but over the winter we saw less and less dogs so it definitely built a bit over the winter) this is his body language break down: we see a dog, ears are up (tail is naturally up) tail starts to wag, he bobs back and forth at the end of the leash, whines, high pitched howl/bark, and overall just wanting to go say hi to every dog we see, if he has the leash he’ll go to the end of it, but he won’t continue to pull and lunge on the leash when he hits the end, he’ll just stand as far out as he’s allowed
