  • Wildlife experts are wondering how four endangered geese ended up in Southern California. Nene, also known as Hawaiian Geese, are native to the Hawaiian Islands and are the state’s bird. The geese are being cared for at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach. Nene were almost extinct in the 1950s, with only about 50 in their population. With conservation and breeding programs, their numbers are up to about 3,800.

    I am not surprised someone kept them as pets. Lots of people keep illegal animals as pets all the time here in California and I am sure they do that in other states or countries too. I am an old lady and nothing shocks me or surprises me anymore.

      @AbysmalGhost 12 дней назад +4

      The woman who had the Nene had a permit for them (I believe). So no, they weren’t illegal pets as you can keep them if you have a permit for it.

    Well, interesting things happen. About twenty years ago, an American Bald Eagle flew 'across the pond' and ended up in Ireland. But this is not on the same level. Four rare birds in one place/. Illegal human activity. Nice to know the woman that had them took VERY good care of them (over 15 years old, must have been good care).
