Audi A4 (B8) repairs. Episode 3, replacing a rear door lock module.

- The continuing adventures of my repairs to my 2008 Audi A4 (B8).
This time in episode 3 I am replacing the rear door lock module after it developed a fault.
When unlocking the car with the remote key fob the rear door would not open with the outside door handle until it had been opened from the inside. It would then work fine until it was locked again.
For the UK MOT test it has to be opened from the outside so I had to make it work (the same reason I had to fix the VW Polo lock seen in another of my videos).
I hope you find this useful and remember to check out my channel for more car repair videos.

Thx, PS : In other videos, people dont change it but just open it and clean it with electrical Contact spray.
Please what key u use to open the special 2 big black bolts ?
@@WissQuattro The module was less than £25 from what I remember so I chose to just swap the part rather than spending time opening the unit up and hoping that it worked when it went back together. You will need an 8mm spline bit, sometimes called a 12 point or 4 square bit to remove the lock from the door.
The rear driver side handle on my A4 avant won't spring back when door is opened so the door won't close unless you push the handle back into position. What might the problem be and how do I fix it please?
It could be a couple of things but make sure the handle isnt sticking on anything and if not, open up the door and make sure the plastic cable that goes from the handle to the lock is properly located. At 11:00 in the video you can see this cable and how it is mounted. If the yellow part is not properly located the tension on the cable will be wrong and wont pull the handle back against the door.
Thank you for doing this video. Gonna try to replace mine, same door, tomorrow.
Thanks a lot for the perfect video! It was an easy job after watching this. Replaced it with an Ridex piece, works perfect. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Glad it helped!
Clearly they haven't improved the reliability of the lock modules - but at least they've made an access panel so you don't take the window out. Turned a 2 hour job into a half hour one. Thanks for uploading the video.
I had to do 2 in one week. The one on the Audi shown here and the one on the 2002 Polo (there is a video of that on my channel as well). Had to dismantle the entire door on the Polo so was really happy when doing this one that I could get it out so easily.
Yes, I've seen the Polo video. I did the front lock on my 2003 Seat Leon at the start of lock down. That was the same having to take the window out. Only plus point was I did it while the door still opened.
Thanks so much my friend.
Great easy to follow video.
My door locks and unlocks good as new now. Just in time before I sell the car in a few days time 😁
Brilliantly clear well shown and edited fix, well done. Perfect. Now a diagnosis m m I no load fix please.
Great job and GREAT video work!
Thank you, I hope it helped.
Multifaceted Man.. Nicely done.
Thanks a lot...greetings from Spain
De nada, que tengas un buen verano.
You absolute legend. Thank you
You legend!!! Amazing video.. my problem solved. Top man
Thank you (from Canada)! I just did it on mine. It's perfect !
Fantastic! Glad it helped.
@@AstonishingGlasgow Glad you want to help :)
Thank you for this very informative video! I fixed my door…but the car still doesn’t make a noise or flicker the lights when I lock it. It used to do that, not sure why it works but not completely.
Glad it now locks and the video helped. My car has never made a noise when I lock the doors but it does flash the indicators, dont know what would have changed the settings on your car by changing the lock. Maybe see if there is a setting in the MMI menu?
@@AstonishingGlasgow Thank you for that tip I’ll look into the MMI. I have a 2009 Audi A4 Avant. Yeah it’s weird how it doesn’t do those two things anymore. I decided to just leave it like that…as long as the door locks I am pleased haha
Very good video with quality image explanation. I have to replace 2 rear locking doors on mine so I believe now that it is not so complicated. Thanks you
Brilliant video. Thank you.
This video is very helpful.
very good for leaning thank you
Thank You for help !!!!
Be aware there are 2 different electrical actuator fittings 8 pin inline or 4pin +4pin check b4 ordering
How do we check?
You will need to remove the old unit to check or order both from somewhere that you can return the module you dont use.
@@AstonishingGlasgow Thank you very much my friend! Great job with the video 😁
Perfect video
Thank you very much mate ! I subscribe
We have the same problem but the child lock is on so the door won't open from inside or out. Any ideas??
Hello.
Thank you for the tutorial.
But I have a question. What is the tool you use to remove the screws from the lock? It isn't a torx key, because I tried and maybe that I have damaged the screw.
Somebody told me that it was a XZN key. Is it? What number?
Thank you for your help.
To remove the lock module from the door you will need what is called either a spline tool, a 12 point or a 3 square bit (I call it a spline bit but they are called other names). I cant remember right now what size it was (may have been an 8mm) but a set of spline bits is not expensive and great to have in your tool kit.
Ok. Thank you very much
You are very kind
Regards from Spain
You are more than welcome, good luck with changing the lock.
Grazie ottimo video.
How to open the door when it doesn’t open from outside as well as inside?
If repeatedly locking and unlocking the door while pulling and releasing the handle has no effect you will need to remove the door card from the inside while it is shut. It will be a major pain but may be the only way as seen in my Polo rear door lock video; ruclips.net/video/X-uIu6KfoV4/видео.html
Thank you for the video, it's very useful!
What is the size (number) of the triple square bit you are using to unscrew the two bolts holding the actuator?
Thanks Marko. I am fairly sure its an M8 triple square but it may be an M10.
What type the two screw take out the module thank you
I was able to replace Mine today, but I notice when I lock the doors I don’t hear the beep sound anymore
Glad you got it swapped. My car didn't beep before I swapped the lock so I'm afraid I can't help you with a reason why yours has stopped.
I have a same problem, but child lock is enabled on this door. Can I open this door on any way?
That could be a real problem. You may need to attempt to remove the inner door card with the door shut to get to the lock.
Thanks!
i have to do this but for my model b8 2009 salloon there is 2,,,,,,,,,,, 8 pin chunk or 5 thin pin connecter ,, ,hopefully i can get he connector off with out taking the lock out and get a look at the pins :( then i can order the right one :)
Have same problem but can’t open driver door from inside or outside...would ye know de problem there?
You may need to try and pry the door card off with the door shut in a similar fashion to my polo video. ruclips.net/video/X-uIu6KfoV4/видео.html
Hi great video, I have a problem on my A4 b8 where I cant open the door from the handle and there seems to be no tension. Can only open door from inside. Have run carista OBD reader - no errors re actuator. Years ago I think I had same problem with my mk2 golf - could it the metal hanger part that goes into a plastic gromet has popped out? Thanks in advance
At 2:35 in the video you see me removing the cable that connects the handle to the lock. It might be the ball on the end of yours has worn off as it's only plastic. This may account for the lack of tension in your handle as it will no longer be operating the lock. Either way I think you will need to pull the door card off for a look.
@@AstonishingGlasgow hi thanks for the speedy reply.. I tried to think about this logically again the issue with white plastic grommet was from the inside on my mk2 golf. I did some more searching on RUclips and my fix was this - unbelievable - keep door shut and hammer fist under neath the door handle repeatedly. This has fixed it. I will find the video and link it here if that's ok?.. I think it's due to the cold weather.
That sounds like the lock module is about to fail. If you look at my other videos you will see I had to replace a door lock module on my Mrs' Polo. This had a fault just like yours. It worked by banging the door or working the lock button repeatedly until the day that it refused to open no matter what. I think the brushes in the small electric motor start to fail and hitting the door vibrates them slightly until they work but this dosnt work forever. Its a lot harder to replace once it refuses to open.
@@AstonishingGlasgow thanks for this info. As others have said your videos are great, straight to the point . Please keep up the good work. Many thanks !
Thanks Mike. I am really glad people find them useful but for me its a double edged sword. I love making the videos but I need parts of my cars to break before I can. Hope you get your door lock working.
Top man thanks loads
No problem 👍
I got that issue with both doors passenger side and left back door. Do i have to change 3 locks or is it another problem?
Its most likely the lock modules which will need swapped out but also check the wiring loom as it runs from the car body into the door. As it gets old it gets brittle and can split the wires.
Hi Thanks for video. Currently I'm unable to open my boot from the outside. Any idea if this would be an MOT failure?
The boot wont be an MOT failure. The rear doors only recently became a failure for not opening so that in an emergency passengers can be released from the car.
your problem was one of the motors inside,,, which costs 33p but ued need to strip it down to get it out
Hola, como se llama la llave tipo tors q usas para desmontar cerradura?
It has a few names. I call it a spline bit but I have heard it called a 12 point bit or a three square bit.
How many pins aren’t in the connector and how are they placed? For the B8 meaning
Would one door not locking deactivate the signal on lock? My A4 won’t sound when locking anymore :(
Interesting. I have never had a noise when locking the car. Is yours a UK market car? This may be a feature that isnt fitted to UK cars.
What tools are used in this? I left all of mine at my old house and will need to buy new ones!
They are all pretty basic hand tools. Metric socket set, torx bits, screw drivers pliers and spline bits.
Were there any symptoms prior to this? I'm not meaning on not being able to open to the door but before that.
Nothing prior to offering somebody a lift and they couldnt get in. I leaned over from the front seat and it opened so the next day I had a look and found that the door opened from outside once it had been opened from the inside.
My audi A5 front passenger and rear door won't lock with the key and doesn't lock from the inside is the lock module faulty?? Thanks
I would use a multi meter to make sure there is voltage getting to the module when you press the lock button. If there is, there is a good chance it's down to faulty modules. I think the one I bought was around £25 so not hugely expensive to change them. Hope you solve the problem.
Thank you for posting the video. Can I have the OEM part number? Thanks.
Oof, I will need to have a search for the part number.
For the rear left door (same as the video) the part number is 8K0839015. However, slapping this number into ebay can return 2 parts. The shape is slightly different and the electrical connection is either 6 or 8 pin. Search for the part number and pin config to get the right part.
@@TheJonboy2301 Hey, how do I know which one my car uses? It's an A4 Avant B8 from may 2009. Thanks 🙂
Did you use an oem part or a third party part from like eBay or amazon? I read some things that said the third party door locks will not chirp and flash lights when locked.
I used a non Audi part, it cost around £25 and it works just fine. I never had a chirp when locking my car and my lights still flash fine.
@@AstonishingGlasgow Do you have a link for the part used. Thanks
Does anyone know what causes the failure? It opens fine from either side but it will only lock on occasion. I'm wondering if there's a way I can fix the broken actuator rather than fully replacing it as it seems like it's likely a bad electronic connection to me.
I'm sure the module could be fixed, failure is usually down to the motor brushes in the module but for me it was easier to spend £25 and have the lock swapped out and working rather than the car be off the road while fixing a lock module.
Why it dosent lock up by pressing the key lock button
Sorry for the late reply but if your car is not locking when pressing the button the first thing I would check is the battery in your key fob.
@@AstonishingGlasgow its just the one door
Thats either going to be the lock module or the wiring loom may have a break in it as it passes through the door jam.
@@AstonishingGlasgow i changed both of them only the Window worked for a short time not even a day
I would go back through all the connectors and make sure they are fully together. Pull back the rubber grommit and check the wiring as it passes from the car to the door and make sure your carpet is dry as there are control modules in the floor. If these all seem fine, get hold of vag com/ vcds or a fault code reader to see if it brings up any codes.
I have a similar looking fault on my front passenger door, it feels like there’s no resistance on the handle when you pull. Mine will only open from the inside, although it did start working fine again for a short period. Does it sound like the same fault or is there any way the handle could have come disconnected from the internal workings?
If it started working for a short time I would think the cable from the handle to the lock module is ok and its the module that has failed.
What kind of bit did you use to unscrew the two bolts on the actuator? I tried M8 but it won’t sit in properly...
The 2 bolts that hold the actuator to the door are spline bits. If I remember correctly they are 8mm spline bits, sometimes known as 12 point or 3 square bits.
What if it doesnt open?
You will need to pull out the back seat and try and remove the door card with the door shut. Good luck.
@@AstonishingGlasgow thanks
Does the b8 A4 estate actuator have 7 pins ?
I will have a look at the old module tomorrow as it's still in my boot.
BTJustice thanks or even if you have the link of the item you bought will do 🙂
That was a good idea. I checked the ebay listing where I got the new one and its listed as having 8 pins.
BTJustice thanks mate
You can actually fix the lock in 10 minutes without buying new one. There is a lot o videos how to do it. Just clean electric motor inside the lock.
For less than £30 for the new lock module it was easier to swap components. I is easier for me to complete the job so that the car is available for use then fix the old module whenever I want and have a spare.
What is the Parts number please. Can somebody tell me the parts number its very important
The part I removed had the number 8K0 839 015
@@AstonishingGlasgow Thx alot
