    Thanks, for the comment. That is a tall order both knives can do those tasks, but neither one can do all of them well so I will put it into categories: Fire making-Rat 5/Shelter making-BK10/Other Survival Tasks-Rat 5/Hunting-Rat 5/Self defense-BK10. Hope that helps.

    I have a very old video on the RAK, good knife but what you are looking for is something a little different. I would suggest the BK10, RAT 5, RAT 7, Buck Punk, ESEE Laser Strike, Ontario Blackbird SK5, ESEE6. The best websites to buy these from would be Knifehog, the knife connection, or amazon.

    When I saw how tough the BK-9 was I knew right away the BK-10 would be strong enough for me and what I do in the bush, so I paired the two off, and ots one of my Fav's set. and my BK-14 as a add-on this way when I carry one of them on person, usually my BK-9, and they say the best knife is the knife you have with you, I have two knives one as my neck knife, ,

    Totally different knives, the bk10 is 12oz. with a 3/16in. spine. The Esee5 is 16oz. and a 1/4in. spine. If I was going into the woods the Esee5, if it was hand to hand combat the BK10.

      Thanks so much Jess and I appreciate your contribution to the GT Crew. The BK 10 is an excellent knife and it’s on right. I no longer on it. I have found that in most scenarios I would rather carry the BK 18. It’s a little lighter and a little thinner. Hope that helps!

    Last comment, the only one thing I would do to the BK-10, I'm a choil man, a choil to me is like having two knives in one, I luv my Ratmandu so much, when Busse came out in a INFI Steel, blip blap blam, I got one, they are not in production, but I was a lucky man, back to the choil, I can choke up on my Ratmandu, or I can leave it long, it's basically the same lenght as the BK-10, don't get me wrong, I really like it, but, my go to knife in a 5" blade lenght, is my Ratmandu, that choil rocks.

    • @Teachering
      @Teachering 9 лет назад +1

      I've just noticed your comment about the lack of choil on the BK-10. Ethan Becker has something to say about that. He faults knives with choil since it is space used up where there could be more sharpened blade. Have a look and listen to David's discussion with Ethan Becker on Ultimate Survival Tips. Ethan Becker has thoroughly worked out the design on each of his creations.

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 9 лет назад

      Yeah but heh heh heh I sound like Bug's Bunny, but from my experience, and I have a few years and many knives later, I never ran out of blade lenght because of a choil, I admire Mr. Becker, but as far as my experience with a choil is and I'm going to say it again, to me a choil is like having two knife sizes in one, when I watch RUclips video's and watch Mors Kochanski, Dave Canterbury and many others, I watch how they hold their knives, to get a thin curl your angle is like a wood plane, then the slice is smooth, there's no question in my mind a choil helps tremendously to achieve that delicate angle, and you can choke right up there and you have excellent control of the blade, we'll that's my opinion anyway, different strokes for different folks, maybe you don't care for a choil, but like I said a choil doesn't shorten my blade at all, and it gives me that choke up that is very comfortable for me, no problem, I don't mean to go against people that don't like choil's it's just that for me I like a choil.

    • @Teachering

      paulie 4x Thank you for a quick and informed response to what was really a query on my part more than anything else. I listen to people like you because I can tell that you know what you're talking about. To be honest, I'm still learning about knives and am always keen on any information people will share with me. As regards choil, in the past month I ordered an ESEE 6 which, as you likely know, has a very good choil. A very nice knife, I must say. Much different from the several Beckers that I own. Not better, but different in design. I'm still learning and working to discover what I really like in a knife. I'm anxious to have a look at the ESEE 5. To this point, my two favourite knives are the Becker BK2 and BK7. I like everything about them. Their looks and feel, and the way they perform. Nice to have had the chance to speak with you, paulie 4x.

    I would caution anyone considering jumping with the nylon BK10 sheath. You state that it's "jump-ready", and while it does have the requisite redundant fasteners and lashing points, i would not recommend parachuting with this sheath, or any of the factory Becker sheaths. While the sheath is sturdy being cordura, and has a pretty solid liner, personally i wouldn't jump with it. If you're a paratrooper or whatnot, i'd invest in a good custom sheath, or at least a Spec-ops combat master or something equivalent. Peace & be careful....

    That's the proper way to use a thumb ramp, you can use the back of it too which is in front of it. Infact alot are afraid to baton with it, but it's the as the s thickness as the BK-9, But also the BK-2 will fit the BK-22 Sheath which is the same knife except it's a full flat grind but the BK-2 fits perfect in the BK-22 Sheath.

  • @Lars1540
    @Lars1540 10 лет назад

    Hey Gideons, I've heard that Ka-bar had major problems with their glass reinforced nylon sheaths that came on the becker line and their marine fighting knives (you know, the classic looking kabar). Apparently the sheaths were actually dulling the knives when they were being drawn from the sheath, ouch! What's more, from what I understand, when people started complaining about the issue, Kabar was not very receptive and basically told customers that it was their own doing, and there was no problems with their sheath. It wasn't until literally thousands of customers starting reporting the same issue that Kabar finally started listening and conducted the investigation to look into why their glass reinforced nylon sheaths were dulling their knives.
    Apparently from what I could find, Kabar had too high of a glass content in the mixture which was causing the knives (when rubbed up against it (ie: drawing from the sheath) to dull. As you know, you can sharpen a knife on glass which means glass is as hard or harder than steel. And whatever can sharpen a knife can also dull it. So this seems to make sense.
    So I'm just personally curious what you have heard regarding this whole issue. Have you heard any different stories? What ever happened with this? Did Kabar ever resolve the issue? I'd love to find out whatever information you may know because I've actually been afraid to purchase any glass reinforced nylon sheathed knives from Kabar on Amazon for fear that I might get a seller's old stock that has one of the defective sheaths.
    Thanks Gideon

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  10 лет назад

      I have heard and have experienced the same thing with my BK2 and BK14 on the GRN Sheaths. With the BK14 you will have to get a costume one from ebay for around $20 and for the BK2 get the BK22 model with the nylon sheath or get the costume on Ebay for $40.

    • @Lars1540
      @Lars1540 10 лет назад

      gideonstactical
      Wow. Sorry to hear that... I think I'm just going to avoid Ka-bar all together... A knife company that produces a poor quality sheath is one thing; a knife company that produces a sheath that actually dulls and ruins your knife is something entirely different!
      Once again, thanks for the heads up! You just saved me a lot of money and aggravation!

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  10 лет назад

      I really like the BK line from kabar especially the BK9 and BK7. I would not right them off as a whole because they are great designed blades.

    • @Lars1540
      @Lars1540 10 лет назад

      gideonstactical
      Oh no doubt Gideon! I'm sure they are great blades, as a matter of fact, I got the chance to pick up and handle a BK 7 and BK9 at my local knife shop because I was considering buying one last year. However, I'm not the type of guy that wants to go buy costume sheaths for my nice knives because the manufacturer of the knife is too incompetent to make a sheath that doesn't damage the knife. lol
      These days, I just keep finding myself going back to my simple Mora knives. They come with a decent enough sheath (not the highest quality I know, but at least they don't damage the knife!...so there's that...), and the steel is great, and for the price they can't be beat. I've also never broken a Mora despite people's unsubstantiated claims of rat-tail tangs being too weak for a survival knife. I don't know about you, but I've never seen a full tang chisel LOL, and they're designed to be beat on with a mallet! I also haven't been able to find any Mora failure videos here on youtube, which should also say something.... They're not anywhere near as weak as people like to think they are. As a matter of fact, I've seen more videos of full tang knives critically failing than I have seen of Mora knives failing.
      I guess if Ka-bar gets their shit together in the future and figures out how to make sheaths that don't trash their knives, I may reconsider buying them. But until that point, I think I will just stick with my tried and true Moras.

    Hi Arin!
    First off i love your reviews. you're doing a fantastic job!
    So I'm a soon to be Soldier and i'm looking for a Tactical Survival knife (kinda). My favourite is The Becker BK-10 but i also like the KA-BAR USMC. I'm a huge survival fan and i figured the ESEE-6 could also fit my needs. So what i wanted to ask you was, what knife, not only those mentioned above would you recommend as a knife, thats a survival knife but can also be used for fighting. I just wish you would call them like you see them, I wish you would deferentiate the 1095 CroVan and the 1095 High carbon as different steel, no offence there is a difference, there's a video by Cutlery lover shoot a .380 into a BK-2 two times he hit the blade and you could see the bullet marks but it didn't break the blade when he hit the handle it broke, CroVan makes the 1095 steel tougher.

    i asked about handle weakness, i read 1 review that he said this is a weak point of becker knives,, i am undecided between 5 knives, i live in west central florida and i am going boar hunting, so, which 1 do you think is the best hunting knife, esee cm6, esee 5, esee 6 with sharpened swedge, or the becker bk 22 or bk 10 ???? i know that there is some differences here but i am a ka bar and esee fan,, thank-you,,,,,,

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 лет назад

      +woofman Is this just to finish off the boar or are you planning on skinning and quartering it with this knife? If you are just using it to finish off the animal then ESEE6 would be my choice. If you are planning on processing the whole animal with it I don't think any of these knives would be a very good choice. They are all combat/survival knives not hunting knifes. They will be hard to control and manipulate and will not give you fine cuts. You will want something smaller and thinner for those tasks.

    You could see why I paired the BK-10 with the BK-9, not only is it a eye perfect set, I added the BK-16, just in case I needed more control on more delicate projects, great, great set, I luv this set, and I have 4 Becker sets, my other set's are, BK-16, BK-2, and the Ka-Bar Zomstro, another set is my BK-17, BK-7, and Ka-Bar Swabbie, one of my most functioning set, last but not least, is the BK-15, BK-5, and the BK-4, this set is my lightest Becker set, but it's very functional, I didn't think I could baton with the BK-5, but it baton's well, with the BK-4, I go out with confidence, and it is a lighter set, by the way, I also carry my BK-14 as my neck knife, I added scales to it, and it added another dimension to the knife.
