Battle of the Beckers - BK5 Vs. BK7 - Best Camp Knife?

- The Kabar Becker BK7 is well known for being a great camp, tactical, survival, and wilderness blade. I was very curious if the Kabar Becker BK5, which is a self proclaimed camp knife, would compare. There are some excellent features that I felt would give the BK5 some clear advantages over the BK7...but are they really advantages, or is the BK7 the better camp knife?
Thanks for turning me on to Wayne Walker customs. I have two now, and they are amazing!
BK 7 is a great all around blade as well. Nice job!
Both knives are amazing for what they were designed to do! BK7 is more of a military general field knife used for fighting and for doing chores, yet the BK5 is a superb slicer, and cuts meat like very few knives can. It was designed just like the old Japanese tanto style knives! I bought 3 of them, took one with me to Brazil, and it performed flawlessly! I love them!
Great review OL. I like the looks of both of your blades. Just picked up a used BK7 this morning and gonna modify it along the lines of what you did.
You'll love that BK7. Enjoy it and put it to hard use!!! Thanks for watching!
I prefer to carry and use the BK7 (and folding saw) over an axe of any size. I find the BK7 the best camp and bushcraft knife, in my opinion.
faultroy I disagree, the bk9 has a less thin tip so how could it be more delicate? 😂 I’m not gonna lie but you sound pretty autistic
Fuck you and your clearly biased opinion.
Nice comprehensive review!!!
Thanks! I have really come to appreciate that BK7. It's hard to beat!!
I have a BK5 and BK9 but been wanting to get a 7. Great video thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!! I used to say I liked the BK9 better than the BK7, but the more and more I use the BK7, the more I appreciate and grow to love it. It's a hands down amazing blade for sure! Thanks for the comments!
I love my bk 2. Just finished a 4 day hike. Split all the fire wood with it. 0 issues. Kept a great edge. A quick 6000g grit stone at the 20dg angle, with a strop, its shaving hairs again. 👌
Nice! I haven't really done a solid field review of the BK2. I think I need to do that one of these days. Some people love it...some hate it. I'm just not sure...haha!
Project A.D.D What? You backpacked with the BK2? I’m in pain just thinking about that weight... I’m getting old. So I bought the BK16 instead. Besides, I don’t chop wood anymore, I just feed small pieces and burn a small fire. Long live the BK fun!! Hahahahaha
This is why saber grind is much stronger than full flat grind for lateral stress and in my opinion a must have for a survival knife! Great video! Thanks
Yes, the BK5 was crazy flexible!!
Good review thanks
Thanks for watching!
I currently have a Turok. Soon will purchase the BK7. I like the lockup with the kydex my Turok has. Only paid $70 new for it. I wish the BK7 was that good of a deal. I added a Schrade ferro rod and holder of a schf 56. Removed the vinyl belt carry system and I used paracord through the eyelets for a right handed belt scout carry on my back. It’s a lot harder than a teklok, but it fits snug and flat against my body. Small fire rod is redundant.
Great job man, I was struggling with what knife to buy between the two, decision made.
Thanks!! I thought it would be an interesting comparison...two completely different style blades, but both so awesome!
BK-5...For the past six years its been one of my favorite and my most trusted knives...take it along on all my Rocky Mtn adventures...i actually have two, an earlier Camillus and a K-bar...love em both and i don't leave for the back country without at least one of these strapped to my side!...atb...woods
I have seen some from time to time from Camillus. Does it have the old version of the grivery handles? I do like the BK5, and I appreciate it. I don't think I have used mine since I filmed that video...time for me to break it out again!
@@outerlimitless No, not grivery, when i got this it had Zebra wood scales, i have since put coco bolo scales replacing the screws with brass pins...the Camillus blade is 1/4" longer and a bit wider towards the front 3rd giving it a gentler sweep...the Ka Bar cuts a bit better...i think it has a better heat treat than its contemporary...woods
I always carry a small folder for doing carving work. If I am carrying a Bk7, I will carry a Mercator, Opinel or a Victornox as my secondary knife for small carving tasks. It's easier and less stressful.
Yes, I like having a second blade...and I generally carry a folder no matter what fixed blade I carry. I prefer a knife with a pocket clip, but I have always wanted an Opinel...never got my hands on one yet...but someday!
How did you strip the blade coating and get that patina? looks really good
Here's the BK7 work: ruclips.net/video/keeXVfuU2bs/видео.html
If you're wondering about the BK5, I have done a similar method to strip the blade, but the patina was masked with a decal that I printed and placed over the blade before I applied the patina and that made the logo on the side of the blade. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Well Done You have a new Subscriber !
Thanks, welcome aboard! Glad to have you!
Great detailed bladeS test.
I choose the Bk7 for a camp knife.
I still like the Bk5 for more tactical/defence applications.
I think that grub hates the Bk7 !😏
Dude, that grub almost got chopped up hard! I think it's funny the BK5 is called a "camp knife", but most people prefer the BK7 for the camp application. That's the main reason why I wanted to try these two side-by-side. Interesting result.
Great tests, thanks. Agree w PREPFORIT.
Great Comparison. I own both and I personally like the BK7 a lot more , the BK5 is just a little too lite for what I like to do and is more of a kitchen / fillet knife to me . I also have the BK9 /10/2 /16 and 15. Can you tell that I love Becker knives ? I also own a bunch of Cold Steels and Ontario's.
All great companies and great knives. I had the BK2 but sold it...too over built in my opinion. But I love the becker lineup. I currently have the BK29, BK9, BK7, BK16, BK5, BK11, and BK23. The BK7 is my favorite!
First i want to say that i'm a fan of the channel and have been a sub for a long time... I really don't want to sound whiney or like i'm the end all champion...but the bk 5 chops really good and even better then the bk 7..with proper technique..it largely depents on the position you hold the knife in while chopping..i've owned them both
You own any other BK's? They're all awesome...I really do like the BK5 a lot...I just didn't think it compared in overall performance.
outer limitless i used to own a bk9 ...but i really want that bk21! Keep up the good work!
With all due respect.
Any tool you need to learn a technique to use to get the best result compared to another you don't have to learn one and still get the result, is a tool not worth the effort or even buying to begin with.
rikufanboy i disagree
Hey bud, how did you get the scales that dark? Great videos.
I bought the knife with them...I got lucky...only set of dark brown scales I have seen quite like this. I'm not sure exactly where they were purchased. Thanks for watching!
Two fantastic blades!
You really made them damn good with your customization.
I really like how the BK7 looks...I wish I kept the BK5 a bit cleaner looking, but it's still sweet. Micarta scales on those are the balls....
Great video!!. Do you have any practical comparison between Kabar BK7 (without finger choil) and ESEE 6 (with finger choil)? Thanks.
I do actually! Here's a link. I was doing some testing of my knife design (TFK T17) and compared that to the ESEE 6 and BK7. It goes pretty in depth. Here's a link to PART 1:

Thanks for watching!
Hey Eric, now that you've had the BK5 for some time now, whats your thoughts on it. I know it's no longer in production and is hard to get, but I may have a chance on getting one for my collection.
I would definitely get it if you have the chance. I don't use mine much, but it's in the collection to stay.
@@outerlimitless Thanks Eric I will.
This has been an interesting video. I have never considered the BK5 as a viable choice for anything. The BK16 is a better choice for camp chores and the BK9 is the best choice for chopping and batoning.
The BK5 has gone with me on a few camp trips...it performed fairly well. Not quite the right shape...but the BK7 can certainly do it all. I love the BK7...it has earned my trust.
I have the Camillus BK9, BK7, and BK10. I also have the Ka-Bar BK5. They all have their advantages. When paired with a tomahawk, I'd pick the BK5. Without the tomahawk I'd use the BK9, but the BK7 would be second choice. BK7 is tops over the BK9 if weight is a concern.
So you have the Camillus versions...cool!! Did you get them when they were Camillus, or buy them after the fact? Very cool either way! I have the BK12 which is similar to the BK10. It still doesn't compare to the BK7. I do honestly prefer the BK7 to the BK9, but I do very much like the BK9. The BK5 is great...and I've enjoyed it very much, but I was honestly surprised when I tried them side by side. It's an interesting experiment for sure.
For me it's the 5 all the way.
I think it starts with my love for choils and a sweeping blade over clip points.
Thanks for taking the time to compare.
Cheers
BB
I told you I'd get the BK5 someday! It's a great blade...pretty comfy for sure. I love size and style. I have used the BK5 independently quite a bit, but I was very surprised how the BK7 overall outperformed it. I bet with different tests, the results would go towards the BK5...I just kinda tested what I usually use a blade of that size for.
The 5 is better suited for food preparation, the 7 is better for wood work because it's thicker and splits the wood easier.
The 7 definitely split the wood easier. The purpose of testing the BK5 against the BK7 is that it specifically calls itself a "camp knife". It's ironic that the BK7 outperformed it....although I have done a ton of splitting with the BK5 and it does do pretty well...I just didn't realize how much more work it took than the BK7 until I put them side-by-side.
tf you talking about? I use my BK5 for spreading butter.
I like the thumb ramp on the BK7, and I added a choil. The combination is outstanding.
I think adding a choil to that would be great. I did add one to my BK9, but I might not to my BK7...not sure! But thanks for watching!
How did you do the choil? thanks
@@rexmoe I used a Dremel tool with a sanding band. Carved it out pretty fast. I also filed the spine flat 90 degrees (sharp crisp edges). I considered grinding off the thumb ramp, but in conjunction with the choil it works great.
Where can I get handles for BK 5?
The BK5 has the exact same handle scales as the BK7, BK9, etc. You should be able to find them direct from Kabar, as well as many online sources. I buy stuff on eBay quite a bit as well. Hope that helps!
Subbed
Awesome man...glad you're aboard!! Feel free to reach out anytime!!
A good companion knife for the 7 would be the 15
Totally agree...infact, I would go as far to say a BK7 or BK9 with the BK15 would be an ultimate combo! Good call....
These knives are not compatible. I wouldn't want the 5 for for survival but I do take it camping. I've used the 5 in the kitchen as well. Due to the way the spine is made on the 5 I wouldn't baton it.
I have used 5 for camping much more than the 7. I have split a ton of wood with it too...just never realized the 7 performed that much better on those tasks. But the 5 is truly a great blade.
If I was only allowed one cutting implement, yeah. If I can have a hatchet and a BK5, I'll take that.
Say Heah, Eric, Yeah, I have both, But I like the Trailing Tip of the BK-5, I find it as strong as the BK-7, and it's a little longer, but has a Choil, I love Choil's.,,.p
I love the choil. The grind angle isn't quite as dialed in as the BK7, but it's still solid for sure. I love the style of the 5...it's a great looking blade.
outer limitless Yeah, you know it's discontinued. Infact when I bought both Limited Edition Bowies, the BK-20 and the BK-29, I recieved a BK-5 with each order, Now I have (3) of them. No problem, that allowed me to see how really tough of a Knife it is. It's passed with flying colors, Dilly, Dilly.,,.p
outer limitless again Eric, one of my Fav's go to 7" blades is my Rodent 7, teamed with my Rodent 3, infact I had a Piggyback made for that
Combo by MashCats, the Rodent 7 is a little heavier and really works wood better, but it's perfectly balanced making it very fluid in had.,,.p
not hating but you could shorten your intro 22 seconds is a bit overkill
Meekelele
I can't disagree. I want to rework it a bit...i felt like it was long. I like how it turned out, but it's longer than I had originally hoped.
I'm on it...I'm glad you forced my hand!
That's called blade geometry. Bk7 us sabre grind which behaves sort of like an axe wedge
OK, I hate "intros".
But THAT was cool!!!
Thanks man, I appreciate that! I try to keep things creative!
I prefer a straight Ricasso , over a choil.
Bring back the BK-5

I want one
That wasent the same crack as the bk5. Just saying, I'll good video, great voice. You should be a narrator or some shay.
Ask prepared mind 101 !
Hands down bk7 for me😊
I'm not sure I understand why a knife is used for any of this.
Seems like we use knives differently...or we go different places...or have different experience and techniques. I understand it...but it's what I do with my knives. Chopping, prying, batoning, splitting...all great use for a knife.
Cro van! Nice.
It's such a great steel...very predictable, serviceable, holds a decent edge and it's tough.
Yup
I like my bk 2 and bk9
Bk5 will be a good skinning knife. That's it, nothing more.
Seems big for a skinning knife...I used it for carving a turkey the other day and it was good, but not great.
Bk7 is a beast thought I cringe when you hit the handle scales
Haha, I promise...the scales can handle it! Not even a mark. If I was smashing the scales, maybe, but a little rappin and tappin, no problem!
Honestly, I look at the BK7 as "almost" a throw away knife in a way. Don't get me wrong...I don't abuse mine...but worst case if it broke I would just buy another. They're a dime a dozen and easy to get...tons of options and cheap on the third party market. I would bum out about breaking mine, but chances would be I would get it on film and it would make for an interesting discussion! Some of my videos literally "cost me" hundreds or even thousands to make due to the cost of gear involved. $70 would suck to replace, but I would make something out of it for sure!
Great job! I am one day gonna get a bk7, one day!
As you should! But how you gonna get a BK7 if you keep buying all those LT Wrights?
outer limitless you are right lol! I really need to not buy any knives any more, I am about to start knifemaking!
I think you need something me gloves if your going to be doing all that chopping. Also I suggest bringing a saw something you could have nice logs to baton through! Also the bk5 is not for batoning, it’s more of a slicer than a chopper.
Yeah, I rarely wear gloves...I generally commit to just working with my hands and suffering damage. I wear holes in my hands often. I have done tons of batoning with the BK5, but I guess it never really donned on me how poorly it was doing the job until I matched it up.
In my opinion, the un-sharpen swedge ruined the BK5. I would have preferred to see a full back spine. Shame
Yeah, the BK5 is tough to understand its place. It is set up to be a wilderness blade, but it better suited for a defense weapon. I would like to try a version without the swedge too!
Bk7 is best
The BK7 really is pretty awesome!
Long, extensive video. I just don’t think you touched on many field tasks aside from prying, chopping, and batoning and honestly, I don’t feel that any of those task are really a good indicator of a good knife. If that’s what I’m going to do, I bring a hatchet or axe. You didn’t really do any “camp tasks”. There’s so much more to a good camp knife than those tasks. I homesteaded for two years wearing a BK5 every day. Since then, I’ve bought many knives trying to find something better and 8 years later, I still haven’t found a knife that is better than the BK5 for everyday task that someone in the woods doing every day camp tasks would ACTUAL USE A KNIFE FOR. You compared a knife with a sharpened pry bar and tested them against tasks someone would normally use a hatchet, axe, or sharpened pry bar on. What about clearing trails? What about cleaning fish? Making a sandwich? Cutting green wood? Cutting fabric? Rope? Skinning a deer? Making dinner? You don’t need to cross-cut logs for camp, you don’t need to baton, and you don’t need to pry. These are tasks totally unnecessary of a camp knife. A survival knife? Sure. Not a camp knife. You’ve done a lot since this video. Maybe it’s time to revisit and put up a comparison video of the two where the tests are designed for knives, not hatchets.
I totally understand your points. And I do appreciate your opinion and your experience. If I were to change the title to "Survival Knife" instead of "Camp Knife" would that have made a difference in your opinion of the use? If so, then every time I go camping I am surviving. If you look at all my backpacking and camping videos, I do all the same things that I did while I showcases these knives. Delimbing, chopping branches and sometimes even trees, batoning, splitting, feather sticking, food prep, and occasional cutting of cordage. Other than that, I don't do much more while I am out there. So I guess our definition of "camping" is different. And you're right about the axe, but I very seldom carry a hatchet or axe...almost never. I always carry a knife and very often a 6-7" knife for my camp chores. But again, I do appreciate your comments...very valid, just two different experiences. Thanks for watching.
Thumb ramp = stabby
Finger choil = carvy
- If the BK7 had a choil, the BK5 wouldn't be needed
- If the BK5 had a thumb ramp, the BK7 wouldn't be needed
= MARKETING 🤓
that bk5 is ugly. the bk2 is a better tool
Hmm....I don't think the BK5 is ugly. But I do agree that the BK2 is a better tool...overbuilt, but yes, a better tool.
BECKER BK-7 ……. All Night Long 🌕🐺💯‼️
