- Nautor’s Swan does not do things by halves. Its version of a sportsboat is this lightweight one design rocket with a C-shaped foil that helps guarantee utmost fun sailing in both directions. Toby Hodges had a blast.

Some people don't want a multihull, or to cruise and have the cash, albeit not TP cash.
It fills a hole in the market. A market full of fast multihulls and beautiful cruisers. Why compete?
I don't get how that single foil works on both tacks...
EDIT: OK, I looked on their website. It is a single foil but slides through a track/channel in the coach roof to the opposite tack. The video could have been a little clearer on this cool feature.
it's circular and rotates through the hull. there's a diagram on their website

Yeah, that's not going to be a huge problem area... Boats totally loaded up with a whole bunch of sail. Tacks and someone is a little slow moving the foil over - I guess it will be fun to watch a bunch of boats broaching on the upwind leg.
Do not understand much about this but can see it is a nice sportsboat.
Not my thing, prefer comfort myself but admire the design which looks well though out.
And here I thought my old tricked out 40.7 was fast. Love these new designs but it does put an end to the "cruiser racer" class. They just can't compete against something like this. Love it though.
This is a one design Kevin, so very much doubt it'll ever be up against a 40.7 anyway!
@@yachtingworld That's just dumb. In our area we race against TP-52, OD-48's, Farr-40's, Mum-36 and a Farr-30 - all old one-designs that now race handicap racing. Plus I highly doubt most local areas will have enough of these $400K boats to even put out a class. We have enough trouble putting enough J boats out for a class.
@@kurtf31r : PHRF would have so much fun putting a number on only 1 of these. In my area it would be handicapped so that it could never win a race.
The "Beachball" still rates like a demon though.

Nice boat. But I have to ask - for $400K you could get a nice racer-cruiser 36 foot trimaran that will blow the Swan 36 off the water both up and down wind for a lot less money and have a half way nice, albeit spartan interior. With all these foils and such - why not invest in trick folding trimarans that will significantly out perform the Swan 36? My old Corsair F-31R would do 23 knots under spinnaker all day long totally under control with 2 crew and the helmsmen and 11-13 knows upwind, we would have done a horizon job on the Swan 36.

It has been really cool seeing all the advances in sailboat design. A family cruiser with hydrofoils and a canting keel someday?
My bet will be infinity or SW get that one out the door first.
Infinity with a DSS (transverse foil) or SW with modified imoca style foils.
That's roughly USD400,000 without sails. OUCH ! I still wonder about tacking the foil in 20 knots. The crew will only have about 3 seconds available before it loads up. That is really cutthroat stuff. The guys in this vid enjoyed absolutely ideal conditions so we don't learn much from it.
Yep could pick up a used multihull for less with more speed with no need to slide a foil from side to side. I own a 20 ft multihull that cost $50,000 new that is faster. Seems like a lot of cost and effort to produce a monohull when multihulls can do what this boating is does and better. Still if monohulls is your thing and you got over $400,000 then I guess why not.
Would you simply tack and then switch the foil? It being out of the water momentarily would not be an issue
Fast innovative boat, yet I find the Figaro more attractive for less money. I just find point to point races more interesting.

So aerodynamic also, with no downstairs deck hump, just completely flat, and with the jobs tracks mounted perfectly with nothing to impede in the winds exit off the sails..then the foil, inhibiting the boat from sliding across the water as it tries to carve through and naturaly lift the boat continually upwind at higher angles as it get the boat into a solid groove

I would say the Farr 11S would take the title of most radical production boat, but that class never took off and now the owners can not even sell those boats for $100K USD. (over $300K New)
So the future of the boat is less about the boat and more about the manufacturer creating and running a spec series to support the boat.

How does the foil deploy? I know it's one-piece, but does it shift on its own?
Well, I was out in my Corsair 750 Sprint with my son and two babies in a moderate wind doing 11.5 knots upwind. So I’ll keep my trimaran and my 375,000.
Few knots faster for many Mill extra. Sea, sun and wind are the same.

Might the system on this boat be the logical evolution of foiling into recreational and perhaps even cruising class sailboats? To provide a degree of lift of the hull without outright planing on the foil.
Potentially but more for performance boats in reality - it acts more like a daggerboard/canard. But it can be built into the hull/deck without taking too much space
Just get a multi-hull. Better performance overall. A racer-cruiser 36ft trimaran would destroy the Club 36 with half the crew.
For that kind of money should be canting keel, better deck layout, and 3dl sails minimum.
Yeh, yeh. It goes fast. All optimised. UGLY AS SIN. But, as you know, sailing is all about speed. Nothing to do with aesthetics, or relaxation, or just wafting along. No, it all has to be about super-efficient hulls, keels and rigging. But it is still an ugly piece of plastic. And of course ridiculously expensive. Corporate take over of a noble pastime. Oh well.
