    I'm starting to suspect Travis's luck is comedy-based.
    Straight-laced half-orc with a tragic backstory? Three consecutive nat 1s at a carnival game.

    • @anjelica948
      @anjelica948 Год назад +60

      Just my own opinion, I think Chetney has a Lawful Neutral alignment. He definitely does things that can be considered evil, like this instance, but its because he has his own code he follows, and he considers the merchant’s actions evil, and won’t abide by it.

    • @Jason-kp4vc
      @Jason-kp4vc Год назад +32

      @@anjelica948 He's chaotic neutral imo, I see a lot of Grog in him. I'd view this instance as evil but several of Chet's actions dissuade me from it and make me think it was closer to neutral than evil. He genuinely believes he was swindled and wants (in his mind) the merchant to stop scamming other people, not just himself. He didn't take her money or stuff (IIRC) and despite having attacked her, made sure she'd survive by cauterizing her wound with his rite (that costs him his own blood) and giving away a healer's kit that's worth 5 gp.

    • @anjelica948

    • @MorinehtarTheBlue
      @MorinehtarTheBlue 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@anjelica948Alignment is a general disposition. Even a good person is capable of evil acts.
      In some sense this is more in the vein of Chetney throwing a temper tantrum.
      Many things in TTRPGs are this broad and that doesn't encapsulate a character well.
      The various backgrounds in 5E are just as bad. They're mere potential starting points, especially for beginners, to allow you to get into character.
      The problem of alignments (though you are right that different people view them differently) is they can become the source of ethical arguments, create stereotypical flat characters or even played so stupidly over the top that your character becomes a caricature.
      But they are just tools. They aren't the end all be all and their flaws allow them to be misused same as any.
      I say this in defense of alignment because they aren't the source of the bad. You just have to realize the limitations of any tool, mechanical or otherwise, that you employ.

      I mean, proper quality tools are expensive IRL too. Maybe not 'eight years worth of wages' but certainly into the thousands of dollars depending on what profession you need tools to engage in. You *can* buy cheap crap, but you'll have to buy it again and again.
      In a more medieval setting, tools for a tradeskill (carpentry, blacksmithing, etc.) would be considered to be family heirlooms. Passed down to your son when he takes over the business, etc.

    • @JudgeMagisterSnow
      @JudgeMagisterSnow Год назад +28

      I always assumed gold was maybe a month's worth of their salary, not a year's worth. Yeah, that's... it's insane, because you'd think there'd be more bandits and adventurers in the world to make up for that. Which would fuck the economy up a *lot* by proximity, because the line between the two is miniscule on a good day, and really boils down to 'ideology' which can also be broken down to 'mood', given how temperamental many people can be.

Once he realized how badly he had hurt her, he stopped her from bleeding to death and even left her a healing item. A true murder hobo would have brutally killed her without remorse and probably killed a few of the ones coming to investigate the commotion.

      In perfect darkness, everything is still in grayscale and gives -5 to passive perception or disadvantage to active checks. Chet's nat 20, with +8, was more than enough to stay hidden

    • @thadofalltrades
      @thadofalltrades Год назад

      @@mattyule5312 it wasn't perfect darkness though. There was dim light. I don't know if that really changes anything. A nat 20 +8 is a very high roll regardless. A merchant's passive perception is likely not that high.

    I say justified. She charged him about $3000 usd for a chisle... and well he paid for it. .. 3000 fucking dollars. She WAY overcharged. Based on gold price now per oz and what it's equivalent in D&D would be. 7.5g is a lot. 7.5s for a custom chisle is $300. 3s would be a fair price for a very very very nice chisle. (Around $125) but I'd charge 2s maybe

      this isn't how fantasy currencies work. that does not at all equate. things used to also cost donkeys, and laves of bread. how many fantasy loaves of bread did she charge him?

      a d&d gold piece is around the same as $100 USD if you had to compare it to real world money today

    • @Liecham
      @Liecham 2 года назад +6

      @@declanmorden ...hmm idk if that's true. Let's say we take an average of gold worth. Per pound gold is worth $22,000. A 1 pound gold bar in D&D is worth 50gp. 22000 ÷ 50 is 440 so each gp is worth 440. So a loaf of bread in D&D is worth $4.40 which isn't outrageous and a beer $8-$9 which at a local bar for a large beer is probably good too. Gp needs an overhaul in my opinion. He spent $3300 on 1 chisle. Even at $100 a gp he spent $750 on it... that's a lot.

    • @declanmorden
      @declanmorden 2 года назад +10

      @@Liecham you are using the real world modern value of gold which is the issue. Gold is simply less valuable in D&D than it is in the modern day real world. Even then though it’s not an exact estimate and is just the closest approximation there is.
