Defenetly colder conditions. In warm I feel like I distroy myself. Done the half marathon in Hamburg at over 30 C, that was terrible. So better as cold as possible. Never got problems to run at - 10 C or colder.

Goldie Locks here id preferer the temperature to be juussst right...but if I had to pick I would go Hot weather, there is just something about dawn summer runs, its already 25*C and the suns not even up, its exhilarating, not to mention my toes don't go numb! Keep up the awesome vlogs Lucy, I'm loving watching all you do and cant wait to see a perfect set of transitions after all your practice!

i prefer colder climates! you can always layer up and warm up as you go and take off layers as needed. hot climates…you cant keep taking layers off at a certain point 😅

grew up in (and still live in) hot and humid. I much prefer cold. in heat and humidity my sweat rate is insane, and I need to keep hydration as a major focus, and performance comes second. In the winter months, however, I can throw on a few layers, go for a few hours, and barely break a sweat. I focus on performance and hydration becomes second fiddle. Also, all of my running distance PRs (5k/10k/half marathon/marathon) were in 40-50F weather. There is a 'too cold' though, I ran a half marathon once in 26F (-3C) and recovery was absolutely horrible!!

Firstly, loved this line, “I’m the world champion at a race that goes for 4 hours.”
Secondly, I prefer hot racing when it’s cold and cold racing when it’s hot! Lol

I love when its warm and cosy. I hate cold water as i can barely breath in it. The whole body is just more relaxed in the heat, but i fight to not get overheated and try to rest wet the whole time. We will miss you racing Lucy but have a good break and see you next year! 👍

Cold weather all the way!!! you can always put more layers, and take them off accordingly when you warm up. But in hot weather there is not so much thing you can remove to cool down.
Plus running in the snow is just magical ❄️!!

Hi Lucy… first of all I would like to thank you for taking picture with me and my family… really impressed about your amazing joy… which I am sure each fan loved… well I can definitely say, after 11 years leaving in UAE 🇦🇪 that racing in colder climate is much more enjoyable; in fact some how you can protect yourself while when it is hot and humid there little you can do… I would add that it also improves performances… I can feel it every time I fly back to Europe… I wish you all the best for the future and, as I was sure about your success on WC 70.3, I am super confident I will see you at the Olympic in Paris…the IM WC title is already in the pipeline 💪💪💪

I personally prefer Hot climate for race for following reasons :
    1. Faster T1 as there is no wet suit to worry about .
    2. No cold air shock to the core system during the bike leg .
    3. Lesser training and event gear required .
    4. Warm up duration required is lesser as compared to cold climate condition .
    5. Can enjoy ice cold water as part of hydration.
    6. You can slack off a bit during aero position on the bike as hotter air is less denser as compared to colder air .

Definitely Cold 🥶 I live, train and mainly race in mid Wales 🌧
I had a dismount like that as well at Deva Tri and had a bloody trainer run!
Short of doing up cleats really tight I think the solution is a step through, as in leg in between other leg and bike frame. Avoiding the unclip twist!
I like copying and this is how Brownlee’s do it. Well without the dodgy foot over top tube instead of round the back!
    Great vid 👍🏼

Love the hot weather - the race becomes a battle of mental strength and means you have to handle the mental and physical stress better than those around you. There’s less margin for error in things like nutrition as well. That’s why Kona is such a spectacular event each year.

  • @danel3912
    @danel3912 2 года назад +6

Cold conditions by far. My transpiration levels are much higher in the hot, so cramping and GI issues come easier. Furthermore, if you are mentally prepared to handle rain or hard conditions, you have already won lots of positions in the final ranking before the race starts because usually people don't like to perform in the rain or cold

As per your question about hot or cold racing I definatel prefer hot weather because I'm from Florida. I have raced hot and cold in all distances and prefer heat management over trying to keep my core warm. But seriously give me partly cloudy and 70° (21°c) with no wind anyday...

I like the cold, for racing and training, it feels less sweat and you can just ease in and not be as hot. Its liek running in the cold is cold when you start but it feels nice after you get a little warmed up, but you dont overheat as easily.

  • @yassinafifi815

I prefer racing in hot weather more than cold weather. I had a few race experiences swimming in cold water and always felt dizzy on my way out. I actually crashed on my first lap during the bike course before because I got way too dizzy from the cold. It was painful honestly but I had a laugh later on after the race.
To add to that, I have no clue if there is a correlation but I actually swim better when the conditions are warm/hot. Last week during WCTS Abu Dhabi I managed to improve my time by 30 seconds... and that's a lot for a swim thats 750 Meters. I came out 20th overall and we were about 400+ athletes.
In general I prefer the heat!
By the way, it was an honour meeting you and taking a photo with you.
Thank you for your time Lucy!

I live in Canada so I have a clear preference for ...hot weather. You can only like cold weather when it never gets really cold and when the cold doesn't last for a long time. The only good thing about running in the cold this morning? It felt acceptable to nap 90 minutes under a warm blanket.

  • @matejmedveczky6792

I like warm weather racing more. Partly because its much easier to warm up and do all the pre-race stuff when its not 12C outside and partly because I hate riding and running with bare feet in the cold.

  • @alexandrealbuquerque7808

Definitely hot climate the warmer the better, don’t get me wrong I will be slower on race day but simply physiological with the lower body fat I’m able to dissipate the heat maybe better than others! Finally, it’s all about the mental approach if you have a positive mindset on facing the element that you can’t control no matter what the days throws you will succeed! Stay positive on cold, warm, windy, or rainy race day! Your attitude drives the day!

Congratulations on the Abu Dhabi race result; love seeing/hearing the insights. As for the preferred race weather - heat, no question. I've done sprint through Ironman races in the cold (or at least in really cold water for the latter), and there is nothing worse than riding or running in frozen feet. I did a sprint race years ago (mid-October in Connecticut) in which I didn't feel my feet until 2M into the final 5K run. I've done sprint races that had pool swims that transitioned into bike rides at ~5 degrees C - that is horrific. I've had my moments with heat, but I'd much prefer that.

Here in Mexico we have to love the hot weather, I think that both climates have their own difficulties, but in the hot one i feel that you have to put so much more effort, an strong mind to every km just keep at your top level, the sun makes you feel tired so much faster, so in that moment is when you pass all that thoughts and mental walls to be stronger and make everything you could think it’s impossible. Thanks for the inspiration Lucy 🙏🏻

Definitely cold weather for me (and for most people I guess)
I think the reason is that hot weather misses up your body balance (electrolyte...etc) and can totally blow you up.
On the other hand, cold weather just takes some extra calories from your body to warm you up.
Another reason is that the body heats up during physical activity, so cold weather neutralizes that heat, while hot weather would add up to your internal body heat and would further worsen the situation.

I personally prefer to bike in medium cold weather. Extreme cold (below 8°C) requires extra clothing and warmer weather leads to quick dehydration.
For the run, the cold weather is better suited since the body gets pretty warm. But I hate cold water swim 😂

I have always loved racing and training in the heat!! The heat gives me a great tan haha!! But I am also an adventure racer and my races and training go for days on end and when your gear gets wet, it's a NIGHTMARE!! Not only that, but my fingers also freeze and I can even do up my jacket !! Plus you have to carry more gear with you and when you have to carry all your gear like a lifejacket, helmet, food, water, etc, your pack gets pretty heavy!!

Hey Lucy, thanks so much for this video! I was waiting for this one so impatiently. I saw your race in Abu Dhabi on tv and was cheering you and GTB. Kudos to your great T1. Thanks for sharing your tactics and insights of your race here. This is not typical, so I really appreciate it. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that, when you train to improve your VO2 max to being able to push those quick kicks to stay in the pack is not going to have a negative effect on your long-race endurance skills. I really want to see you win Kona 2022. I believe you can crush it next year! I actually love to train in the heat, however I always preferred to race in the cold - ideally with wind. This always gave me an advantage whereas the heat had its toll. A really big fan of Team CB😊

I totally prefer racing in warm to hot conditions! When it's cold I need to pee too often and I stress about my muscles cooling down before the gun goes off. Once I got so chilled, I couldn't feel my toes till 5km into the race. (Olympic course.)
    I'm not built for cold.

  • @moniquestander1936
    @moniquestander1936 2 года назад +1

That is a tough question! But I am going for hot weather. I feel there is a lot one can do to cool the body down but much fewer options when the body is cooling down - this is especially problematic considering you getting wet on the bike. In a cold climate, getting wet on the bike is the absolute worst for me. And let's not forget about those frozen toes. So, I am opting for hot. Dry-hot. (not humid hot)

COLD racing is what I like! My ancestors are Swedish and I grew up in the very northern USA. I love a good cold swim against a current, a tough, windy bike, and a nice cool run. Think I need to go take on Norseman someday.
Also 4 years ago I did exactly what you did coming into T2. I needed new cleats, badly, apparently, and my shoe slid right out. I was so disoriented that I just jogged the 10k after that.

I love racing in "perfect weather". Not too hot, not too cold!
I started triathlon in Australia so it was very hot but the weather was always beautiful. Swimming in the beautiful sea on the Gold Coast, riding along the wide roads and running beside the beach is ALWAYS more enjoyeable when the sun is out. When it is raining, I'm constantly worrying about how wet everything is going to be by the time I get to transition. Rain makes everything harder for my parents supporting me on scene too :)

  • @kaliruffell-moreira6631

I prefer cold racing because it's more technical - you have to take into consideration your wetsuit and where and when to take it off. Also, I live in England and I have only done races here. There is also the rain and cold winds on the bike and run to remember and that makes it more intense because you have to negotiate when to the race course more and it makes the races more interesting.

Lucy you are the greatest, just a concern as you look for the extra seconds you risk a fall and end your 2022 pursuit. Hope you stay safe I want to see you win the ironman title as do others

Definetely cold conditions, for many reasons, especially because it's generally wetsuit legal and also because it's easier not to get dehydrated even when your nutrition/hydration plans go wrong.

Amazing race Lucy! We really enjoy following you through your experiences. So true about Abu Dhabi and taking away valuable learnings.
My wife and I love to race in the heat....it means after the event we are probably in an amazing location where we can spend time together enjoying that post-race sense of accomplishment together. We are competitive, not professional so it's all about the experiences and journey as a couple!! September was IM Chattanooga then a week on the beach in Florida (on the IM Florida course)!
Thank you for everything you do. You continue to inspire us everyday. Much love and gratitude :)

Well after doing Bolton Ironman this year Lucy I definitely prefer slightly warmer weather and I don’t like monsoon weather on the bike so I think I have to go for warm weather! Plus you travel to a warmer climate to race. Dubai 70.3 Lucy next year?

Thx for sharing your experiences 🙏
I prefer colder climates as my North-European body seems incapable to cool down itself. My heart rate spikes to much as soon it’s more than 25 degrees Celsius. 🤷‍♀️

Very nice video it's amazing to watch these girls taking corners like they do.
I do like racing in cold weather because I find it mentally easier and you can perform better with the cooldown effect if it's not freezing cold even if I'm better at hot races thanks to hours spent on Zwift with my 10$ fan.
    Have a good off-season.

Great video! I prefer racing in the heat since the majority of people suffer and I usually catch a lot of them in the run ;)

Its definitely cold for me. When I'm overheating there's almost nothing to be done and GI issues or cramps usually follow. . In colder weather you can always add layers. The only thing about cold weather racing/training is that you can't stop. Take a break and your body temp just plummets due to the sweat and that can be difficult to come back from.

Prefer somewhere in the middle but if you had to choose, colder rather than hotter. I sweat like a pig so no fun. Look forward to seeing you race more short course!

Love your race report! You are amazing and inspiring. 😊 I definitely perform well in COLD weather than hot, so I like colder climates, for sure. My optimal temperature would be around 8 to 10 degree C to be able to have the best performance, specially on the run and bike. Looking forward to more of your videos. 🤓

Warm-ish swim (but still wetsuit legal!), dry bike (don't care too much about the temperature), cool-ish run would be my preference. Good job i'm in the UK where there's a good chance of that happening!
"i'm the world champion..." still has a decent ring to it, no?

Have to choose hot 🔥 I find it hard to remember hydration and nutrition in the cold, and lungs take a while to warm up and get in the rhythm. Cold swims are torturous. And there's nothing worse than freezing cold hands on the bike or running with two ice blocks as feet (a literal brick session) 🙈
Loved watching you race in short course again! Keep up the amazing work, putting pressure on those other athletes!!

Love hot “extreme” weather. I’ve lived last 6 years in Kuwait. Running in the summer nights at 46 oC. I’ve improved a lot my endurance. Every time I used to go to Spain for vacations my run felt so good and easy. I was flying and much stronger in uphill runs. Definitely hot weather is a great “trainer” (they say it’s the same as training in high altitude). Love the challenge 😀

As always, great vid, and congrats on a great race! Personally I like to schedule warmer races, but ironically I always seem to do better when it is cool and rainy. I'm larger than some and I guess I just respond better in the cooler weather.

Hay my daughter (17 years old) raced their too on that Friday for Great Britain in her first ever ParaTriathlon World Champs and like you her aim was to make it round safely and learn and grow from the experience. Certainly different racing in the heat but great to race on the formula one track on a tandem

I always sign up for race in warm climates as they look amazing and you get a good holiday afterwards, but as I’m Scottish and turn pink at the slightest hint of sunshine, I don’t race well in the heat so do better in cooler climates.

Amazing job Lucy! There is no growth in comfort!
I personally prefer racing in the heat, I can regulate my temperature better using fluids etc, compared to the numbness and pains that can come from being in the cold... then again, being in the UK - we don't have much of a choice!! x
    Keep strong and safe everyone!

Had that dismount issue whereby the shoe gave way when I step on it with one foot. I overcame it by tightening the clip tension on left pedal to prevent the shoe from slipping off the pedal again for my follow up races.

I LOVE racing in cold weather because I feel like I can get more out of myself than in hot temperatures. I quite literally feel faster! Perhaps not on the swim but cycling and running in cold weather is sublime. Thank you!

Maybe switch from Speed Play pedals to Shimano. I used to use speed play and had the same problem in draft legal racing. I could just never get the speed plays tight enough and they also have a lot less surface area then shimano pedals. Once I switch to the shimano I never felt like I was close to unclipping on my dismounts. Also I think with all the float in the speed plays its a lot harder to hit those big power spikes out of the corners and hills. Speed plays I think are great for long distance where its a steadier power with a lot lower power spikes. But I just don't think they are the way to go for short course. Wish you the best! And can't wait to see how the next one goes! :D

Cold climate! I’d rather swim with the wetsuit and deal with shucking it in T1. Plus, it feels so much better to push that last bit harder in the cool air without the added risk of overheating in the warmer weather.
