- This is our Group Reaction & Review to Finding Nemo. It tells the story of an overprotective clownfish named Marlin (Brooks) who, along with a regal blue tang named Dory (DeGeneres), searches for his missing son Nemo (Gould). Along the way, Marlin learns to take risks and comes to terms with Nemo taking care of himself.

The white birds you thought were pigeons are actually called seagulls.
Also, the guy who voiced the swarm of fish that gave Dory and Marlin directions appears in every Pixar film. One of the studio producers or executives considers this guy to be their lucky charm. Because of that they always insist on having him voice at least one character in every film. These characters are usually quick cameos. I can’t remember his name, but if you start paying attention you can usually tell when this guy appears on screen. He has a pretty distinctive voice and is a fun Easter egg to watch out for.

This movie goes hard with the message that disabilities don't define you or your abilities.
All his life, Nemo was told by his dad that he can't do things because of his fin and the moment he uses his better judgment and picks the right decision, his dad accuses him immediately of making the wrong decision, of not being ready to function on his own in his FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. He was ready to pull him out of the class regardless of what Nemo was doing because it was too unsafe for his kid (without the freak incident with the divers happening)
He was being a bit of an abilist, not on purpose, but he wasn't letting his son, spread his fins, test out his abilities to reach the fullest potential of what he can do, just because he thinks Nemo CAN'T.
In the argument before Nemo was taken, he stood up for himself and said he can swim just fine. He hated the side of his father that wouldn't recognize the possibility of his potential and Merlin wasn't listening. I'm so happy to see that come full circle at the end of the movie where Nemo tells his dad that he can do it and Merlin listens.
I don’t know if Marlin *thought* Nemo couldn’t do those things, as much as he was *scared* he couldn’t. He was being overly protective.
Nemo’s dad was overprotective- partly because of the damaged fin, yes, but _mostly_ because he lost the entire rest of his family in an extremely traumatic and tragic way. Nemo is all he has left, and he is afraid of history repeating itself. He fears the possibility that at any given moment he could lose him too.
(-none of which negates what you said about the message of ableism, but I don’t see it as Merlin’s primary deal, more of a contributing factor)
This is one of the best Pixar movies. It's so very emotional, great adventure and hilarious moments

Also the whale in this movie due to its species doesn’t have teeth, instead it has fibrous plates in their mouth which helps them filter out the amount of krill intake and other foods that are apart of a whales diet. But other whales like orcas have teeth😊

Oh boy, one of my favorite childhood movies that simultaneously gave me nightmares for most of it (curse you Darla, you were insanely creepy) still a good movie overall though so good that no matter how much it scared me I couldn't stop watching it
What I love most about this movie is the emotion and love and how all the sea creatures help Marlin and Dory find his son in one way or another and it’s magical

This was the first movie I ever saw in theaters, 3 years old. It was amazing to watch and also very scary. Probably contributed to my thalassophobia, but still a really good movie.

Dory is a Blue Tang! If I remember correctly they’re actually poisonous which is interesting considering Dory’s disposition
The spines on the dorsal fin are the only thing you gotta worry about, they're actually a bit aggressive as far as keeping them in an aquarium goes.
interesting little tidbit, Gill's race is a notorious fish as it is pretty much impossible to keep them as pets because they are extremely picky in both their diet and environment if you cannot satisfy them they will starve themselves to death.
Also Crush is voiced by the actual director of the movie.
Krill-feeding whales have loads of hairs instead of teeth, called baleen. (All hair and teeth are made of the same biologically excreted molecule; keratin) They’re filter feeders, and genuinely don’t like accidentally eating things as big as fish.

I like the minefield scene, it’s interesting they chose to use antenna mines for that scene, ( the ones with the tiny black floats above them ). But f a ship hits the floats, the chain is cut, and the mine floats to the surface and either hits the bottom of the ship or the next ship in line if it’s a convoy.

Not pigeons. They're gulls. To tell the difference between a seabird and a pigeon are beaks, feet, and body shape. Pigeons don't have webbed feet and the beak is small compared to a gull.

Fish and amphibians produce a lot of eggs when reproducing because they are fertilized externally; the large amount of eggs laid acts almost like an insurance policy to increase the chances that some will survive. A female fish or amphibian will typically release eggs in the water where males can then fertilize them.
