Saigon 1963. On the day of a Monk protest, around 400 Buddhist monks and nuns marched to the intersection carrying banners protesting about the Government oppression of their faith and culture.
Then a car pulled up and three monks got out, one of them being a devout monk called Thích Quang Duc.

This gonna sound wierd, but my second school is like 20m meter away from where he burnt himself. There is a giant memorial of him right in front of my school

Don't worry, he'll just respawn. Buddhist monks do this all the time.

This gives me chills everytime. We get so much pain when we burn our finger even a bit. Imagine the pain of getting the whole body burnt at the same time with the knowing that there's no way out now. He just sat there without moving even a bit. The pain of burning and suffocation, he wasn't able to breathe as soon as the fire hit him and yet he just sat there.

I was involved in an accident which set me on fire and gave me some seriously large burns that I have since mostly healed from. That monk being absolutely still and not reacting at all is insane. I know exactly how unbelievably painful it is and for him to be seemingly at peace just shows his devotion, strength and courage to willingly die in one of the worst ways possible so his people are accepted and given the rights they absolutely deserve.

I always find it interesting how the death of one person like in this can draw more attention and create more change than the deaths of larger group of people.

The crazy think is that around 61 years later, 25th of February 2024, a USAF pilot, Aaron Bushnell, burnt himself infront of the israeli embassy as a sign of protest about israeli attacks on Gaza, i just heard this terrifying news this morning on a radio. The moment i heard that, i insantly remembered this video.

Wow I had no idea that fellow Buddhist were being treated unfairly. That one man calmly showed up and politely ask for peace and his fellow Buddhist be treated fairly.
