    I almost never leave comments on RUclips, but this in-depth review is just too impressive, and so much effort was put in. Come on people, 5.9K view and only 409 likes? What's not to like? Anyway, thank you so much Richard for this in depth review. Helped me alot in deciding my next camera as a G9 user. Greatly appreciate this!! Cheers and all the best.

    *** CORRECTION *** In this video i said when you record video to SSD drive, the maximum frame rate is only 60fps. Turns out I was wrong. You could record video of any frame rate to the SSD drive but you need the optional DMW-AC10 AC Adaptor and also the official dummy battery DMW-DCC17 if you want to to do that . Sorry about the incorrect information in the video
    This is my longest review ever! My review scripts is 24 pages long and I tried my best to cut it as short as possible and it's still 2 hours long! I have more Lumix G9II videos coming soon so remember to come back to this channel if you are interested in the Lumix G9II!

      Does the camera have HDMI RAW output?

      Indeed, @@cameralabs, though a bit suspiciously overly positive. OK, a safari tour _is_ such a memory where everything is nice and revered, and the two flagship camera's admittedly are superb engineering achievements, no doubt. But RED35 has some interesting thoughts on this comparison.
      MFN have what you both lack for the time being: an unabashed personal presentation, and the charms of a young woman. Look at them, or at CC - everything can be done without being ever so grave. But that's probably the most difficult part, to deploy your free inner being before the camera.

    Watched it all the way to the end! You've done an amazing job here. I still remember your review of the EM-1 from almost a decade ago which helped me decide on ditching APSC and moving to M43 so thanks for all those years of reviews.
    I have to say that I've been expecting the G9.2 for a long time, and I was initially disappointed. Putting aside all the specs and capabilities, the G9 has been the single most enjoyable camera I've ever shot, between its supersized EVF, top screen, and spectacular ergonomics, all lost a bit in the G9.2 to the S5 body. And then it seemed like, originally, that other than a (much delayed) decent CAF system, there's not much new here. But going through your review I see Panasonic did something which goes against all modern marketing machines. Rather than stacking million of new features they can promote, they simply perfected almost everything about the camera (comfortable grip aside ;-)). While I'm mostly invested in Panasonic glass, I was initially feeling that the wait may have been in vain and I would have to switch back to OM.... But having seen this 2 hours review (!!) now, I see that this camera is just perfected in every possible way. So thanks again!

    That was an incredibly well thought out and detailed review. Your review sold me, I will be upgrading from the G9 to the G9II, and I now know exactly what I am getting and how it stacks up to the competition (very well indeed!). Thanks to you, I will be buying without reservation.
    I love your final thoughts, including displaying your carry-kit. 24-1600mm range in a lightweight backpack and a camera with great image and video quality! That really shows the strength of the M43 system as a wildlife and travel camera. It is what sold me as the best bang-for-the-buck camera and lens system. Now that the G9II is here, there is no reason to look anywhere else.
    Long life and happiness for you and your family.

    As primarily a photographer, I'd love to see a more in-depth comparison of the OM-1 and G9 ii. The dynamic range results you outlined are most curious. With the extra range the BSI sensor the OM-1 uses you would think it would fare better. I was especially surprised by the magenta cast you noted when raising the EV to bring up shadows. I wonder if anyone else has noted this when testing. I really appreciate all your hard work and thorough testing. Cameras are a big purchase for most of us, something we might only replace every 5-6 years, if not more. So it's great to see this level of detail. I don't think the G9 ii will sway me to sell off my OM-1. It's barely a year old after all. Though, I am very impressed by what Panasonic has done. If this had been out a year ago, I'd have bought it instead. I was a Panny user for many years. I just ran out of patience waiting for a G9 replacement. I think they might find that's the case for a lot of would-be buyers. At least I didn't leave the M43 system. So I can go back, maybe one day. Thanks again for the great review! Best of luck to you and your channel.

      Stacked sensors usually perform worse in terms of noise and DR. The BSI compensates for it a bit.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Год назад +3

      OM1 uses stacked sensor which usually gives you high speed read out but sacrifice in dynamic range.

    • @jonathanscherer8567
      @jonathanscherer8567 Год назад +1

      @@TheRealRichardWong Generally, but it being BSI was supposed to help with this. OM Systems also quoted improved dynamic range when compared to the previous sensor they used. Which is kind of confounding now as we see it might not have been the reality. I think the most anyone has found in RAW is perhaps half a stop of actual improvement, but testing dynamic range seems to be a complicated game, perhaps with no definitive way to judge with complete objectivity because there are too many variables. So different people with different methods get different results. I'd certainly note that comparing the OM-1 to my previous G7 that I used for many years, I've not noticed that much difference. Completely subjective again.

    • @williamhumber5890
      @williamhumber5890 Год назад

      The magenta and green casts in the other cameras are not actually a camera issue, that's an issue with how ACR sets the blackpoint for those cameras. It's easy to adjust in post as long as the shadow tint is uniform across the frame. If you look at this one spot the G9ii looks decent but if you look at the zoomed out image you'll notice that the shadow tint varies throughout the frame on the G9ii which is a problem.

    Impressive camera, and it seems a worthy update to the fabled G9 so bravo to Panasonic Lumix team. That said, the competition is fierce from both feature-perspective and price perspective.
    Additionally, used models of cameras like the G9, GH5M2, E-M1iii, etc. have dropped in price so much that even the last generation flagships easily meet or exceed the needs of many (most?) hobbyist/enthusiasts. Great time to a consumer, tough time to be an OEM.

    Watched right to the end and I can't thank Richard enough for such a detailed in-depth study of this exciting new camera. I pre-ordered mine on Wednesday! Like Richard, I am disappointed that the LCD screen has disappeared. I've been a Pentax user since 1982 and found - when we went digital, that the screen was so easy to use. Now because I don't like using the rear screen, I will need to lift the camera to my eye to check things, instead of just glancing down. Not very worried about the video side of things. With my five Pentax DSLRs - *ist D, K-5, K-3, K-3 II and K-1, my total video content amounted to just 43 seconds. So, to me, I would have prefered Panasonic to have done what they said and brought us a really photocentric camera. It won't stop me having fun with it when I get it though and who knows, perhaps I might get a taste for the video aspects.

    The launch of the G9II is a significant boost for the m43 community. Recently, I've made a full transition back from Sony FF to m43. Virtually everything you can do with Fullframe can also be achieved with m43, but with less weight (which becomes increasingly important as you get older) and less intimidating to the surroundings. The video quality of the GH6 is impressive and fantastic to work with. However, compact and yet excellent cameras like the GX9 are pleasant companions for a day out. Naturally, the G9II (with its much-improved AF) is on my wishlist, along with the highly underrated OM5 from OM systems (420 grams). The latter camera is a hybrid marvel when it comes to both photo and video (4K and 120 FPS HD) in a small and lightweight body. Try capturing a handheld video with panning using a Sony (e.g., the zv1 or the a7c); it's quite challenging. The OM5 can do it, and, of course, the G9II can as well. Hopefully, Panasonic will continue to innovate and soon release a GX9 mkII and/or a G90 mkII.

    Yes, I watched the whole review! Excellent work, Richard. I have watched about 20 previews and five real reviews in the past few days, and I think I might have to open the wallet on this one. I'm still using a GH4, which I swore I would keep for seven years or until Lumix added PDAF to their m43 camera, so it's time. I was waiting for a GH model with PDAF, but the video in the G9 II is so good, I probably don't need to wait. A large part of my usage will be copying old film negatives, transparencies, and prints, and some artwork for original artists. So the 100MP mode is very enticing! The PDAF and IBIS/Dual IS 2 are a potent combination for both photography and video. The real time LUT feature is pure gold! There is so much to like about this, and then they had to go and update the 100-400 zoom, too? Wow.

I will recommend your channel to everyone. Last time few months back in live chat session I had asked about GH6 streaking issue and in this video you have demonstrated very well with example that it is present with other brands too. Great work Richard and I thank you for clearing my doubt as it was caused by watching number of other youtube videos. Panasonic is a very stable system in many ways and will be a huge success in recent future. Autofocus alone with a big purchase price without prores and 422 codecs and video tools will make other brands cameras just like cell phones which needs a replacement after few years. But you can mature well with Panasonic cameras and their high degree comittment to firmware updates. One again thank you Richard for all your great work🙏.

    You deserve a lot of credit for such a comprehensive review. I've been concerned about the grip on the new G9 changing the feel of the camera, but also intrigued by the idea of a better AF experience from a G9 camera that I feel has been underrated even with just the G9's original contrast AF system. As far as the size is concerned I think MFT's small size has more do with the lenses than the camera body. Hands are all pretty much the same size but I don't think I'd enjoy taking a 200-800mm lens for a full-frame camera on long hikes.
    One trick I learned from Matt Granger to improve the AF of the original G9 was to overlay bird detect AF on the center square focusing mode and just expand or contract that square as needed. It seemed to greatly reduce the time it took for the AF to lock on compared to just using the full-frame AF sensors. Any thoughts regarding this technique?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Год назад

      Thanks Bruce! Re Reducing the AF area, I'm not sure about the AF speed . But with smaller area, there is less data to process and less things/chance to misfocus so you can always get better autofocus performance

    I am new to this channel and must say, this was one of the most helpful reviews I've ever watched on RUclips. Comprehensive, well edited and most of all *honest.*.
    I watched about 5 others before I came to this. They all start with "I want you to know that I am not paid by the camera company to promote their equipment." Then, it's pure hype and fan boy or fan girl-ism. 'oh this is the best at this, top in its class, a new standard.'Yada,yada.yada. No data no facts, just opinion.
    That's why your review is a breath of fresh air. Hard work, tests and comparisons and analysis that helps the viewers make a choice. No hype. In other words, i feel like I can trust what you present and am happy to have found your channel.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Год назад

      Thank you very much Rich! Really appreciate your kind words. We reviewers do get hyped up a bit with the shinny new camera in front of us. That could easily make us say things like "best thing ever" in our reviews. Also not going to lie, titles like that would get more views and help grow the channel a lot faster than videos with more boring titles/thumbnails.
      But yes when i want to say things like "it is the best" in my review, i do want data/material to backup my claim. And usually i want to do controlled test if possible. It does increase the time/effort required significantly but I feel as a reviewer, i have the responsibility to prove what i said and also make sure what i said is really the truth by doing my homework first. I could still be wrong, and i was wrong many times in the past. But i do really want to minimise that.

  • @ericaceous1652

    @TheRealRichardWong just to clarify - around 42:37, as you're talking about filling the buffer, you mention amounts of time you can shoot for "before the camera slows down". Is it correct then that the camera can still shoot when the buffer is full, albeit at a slower rate? I've seen some forum posters saying that the camera stops entirely when the buffer is full and can't shoot again until all files are written to the card. I havent seen that fact mentioned in any YT reviews so far though.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Год назад +1

      I've already returned the camera to Panasonic but i'm very sure you can continue to shoot just at lower speed when shooting in normal burst mode. And when shooting in super high speed burst mode, you can shoot too as soon as the buffer count is not zero.
      It has always been like that with all the Lumix cameras such as GH6 and it is the same with the G9II

    I am at a halt of how to choose between the GH 5 S as it takes great night shots and this newer G 9 ll... I wanna both to do night shots, street documentaries in a poetic mood, and observational documentaries and add voice-over later or music, but I also want to acting of myself in front of the camera with some simple lighting at home or preferably just natural light...like one-man plays, short plays, monologues for online usage...
    How to understand the differences between these models in the way I wanna work? Like street photography, slow-motion work, more filmistic and artistic colouring later on ... should I film in RAW, how good are these cameras for this?
    or should I step over to the black magic cameras?
    Please advise based on what I aim to do...
    thanks for a great video to help me look into this model, I just got to know about it today but have been looking at upgrading from my GH3 to the GH 5s.. and then today I heard about this one and also the new Black Magic cameras that I can use my MF lenses with as well...
    So, feel a bit unclear about what will be most interesting to work with when one is more an artist director/actor than a cinematographer...
    the Gh5s I have found is second-hand and in great shape for 1200 dollars, the GH9ll is another 1000 dollars... hmm...

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Год назад +1

      The GH5S should give you better low light performance, but between the GH5S and G9II, i would recommend the G9II for the type of things you want to shoot, even if it cost $1000 more. The new PDAF autofocus, the excellent IBIS (which GH5S doesn't have at all), the higher resolution photo and video output, open gate mode...etc all make the G9II a better choice especially when. you shooting run and gun, one-man band style.
      I wouldn't bother shooting in RAW for video. While it does give you more flexiblity and in theory the best image quality, the extra effort, storage, processing, computer power required is just not worth it for most kind of projects in my opinion. Just the extra amount of harddrive/SSDs you have to buy would shock you. Normal 10 bit video shoot in VLOG profile is really good enough for most projects again in my opinion.

      To put these photographic cameras used as video cameras in perspective to something different but that also got the 10 bit video in vlog, what do you think of using the Panasonic HC-X20 and selling my GH 3 and my three lenses and going over to a camcorder like that one for my kind of projects?

    Something is not right with the number of views, likes and comments here. This is a competent _tour de force_ camera review if there ever was one. It has everything on display one could wish for, save a look at the price in the market segment. I remember my first encounter of a Richard Wong's video, his G9 account, it was enticingly interesting but had a language idiosyncrasy that turned me down. Now he has worked on this (still could do more, this is showbiz Richard after all...!) but his competitiveness has already made him a worldwide renown authority. All the way.
    Excellent review, Thank you.
    Currently I use a G9, in the M43 and Nikon in full frame. The 2nd M43 body was a GX9, which I like the most, with th exception: 1) Negative - GX9 not weather proof in the same way as the G9. 2) Negative - the eyelevel viewfinder, in my humble opinion could have done with a lock. The viewfinder moved whit the slightest pressure. 3) Positive - It was a lot smaller making it less obvious. 4) Positive - Althgough the rear lcd on fips up and down, again, is less obvious when "street shooting". 5) Positive, it has the same 20Mp sensor size.
    Replaced the GX9 with Olympus, great camera, but I just did not like it as much.
    As you stated, m43 as a kit to lug around, these are my lenses,1) 7-14 f4 Lumix, 2) 12-24 f2.8 OM Pro, 3) 22 f1.7 Lumix, 4) 42.5 f1.2 Leica Lumix, 5) 35-100 f2.8 Lumix, 6) 100-400mm Lumix Laica, and 7)35mm f1.7 Meike. All this in a small bag, easy to carry around, specially when traveling.

    Wow--very impressive how in-depth your testing is and thanks you so much for taking the time and trouble to present your results! I primarily use my G9 "I" and shoot RAW+JPG (the latter for easier curating/reference), but can't imagine processing in-camera (or on any screen much smaller than my 32" calibrate 4K monitor). DxO has so many great ways to emulate film (PhotoLab, FilmPack, and Nik--especially Silver Efex) anyway. As I only rarely shoot video, I concentrated on the stills-oriented sections. I had planned to get a G9 II anyway, and your YT has certainly not dissuaded me! BtW, I've never had a significant issue with rolling shutter with my G9 I and I use the electronic shutter probably >95% of the time (but that's also stills >99% of the time). I hope that Panasonic adopts your suggestions and I agree with you about the ergonomics of the G9. I had hoped they'd keep the same body for the same reasons you state (now I'll have to get another battery grip and even more batteries).

Post-editing software helps but its all about how you use it no matter what camera you have or even how old. I didn't have to rely heavy auto-focus use as my subject was static which is import in the m43 world.....More than anything though, the demand the industry requires on regular consumer funds to run R&D and keep the system alive in a economy saturated at peak camera tech involvement and and the ever gaining cell phone photography market is ever so consuming!

    You make by far the best reviews of cameras on here, which is why you're the only reviewer I'm subscribed to - thanks as always for this amazing detail! It has answered all questions except for a few niche ones about macro photography. I am wondering:
    - if it can use electronic shutter along with a flash, and if so, what the fastest shutter sync speed is
    - if it uses the mechanical shutter or electronic shutter for focus bracketing (or if you can choose between the two) - and what the fastest fps is in each case
    - and if it has any focus stacking modes - hopefully improved over the jpg-only post-focus of the original G9
    I imagine there will not be many improvements in these regards and so may buy an OM-1 instead for macro photography, but always good to check :) Thanks again!

      Also, as an aside, just want to say the camera looks amazing in almost every other way, except for their choice of using the S5ii's body - the original G9 is the most ergonomic camera I and many others have ever held, and whilst the S5ii is still nice, the G9's grip is amazing - and it's a real shame to lose than switch on the front! I have more Nikkors, including the fantastic 200-500, than Panasonic lenses but the 20-80 Elmarit is just so good! It’s an exciting choice to be making and either will be a success, just likely to go the Panasonic route because of travel plans. Thanks again, Richard.
