Author Leah Moore evokes conversation and change in her powerful parenting memoir, Loving You Big. Moore’s memoir tells the story of her special needs children and navigates both the beauty and hardships of parenting, especially when things don't go as planned. Moore tells the story of her daughter who was born with Cri du chat syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. After receiving this life-altering news, Moore searched for books that would allow her daughter to see herself represented in the pages, however little was available. Moore’s frustration led her to create Loving You Big, a website providing an honest space for parents to create community, conversation, and change surrounding the narrative of individuals with disabilities. When her twins were born four years later, one requiring visits with an oncologist and the other a brain surgeon, Moore realized writing would further her advocacy. “I realized there was a need to reach out to other parents handling the unimaginable fears of parenthood. I wanted to write a book that changed the narrative about individuals with disabilities,” says Moore. She hopes that sharing her story will encourage other parents who have faced similar battles, and combat the stigma surrounding raising a child with disabilities or health issues. “There is a lot of isolation as a special needs parent, and if my writing continues to create community and create societal changes for individuals with disabilities, then all those difficult nights of writing will be worth it.” Loving You Big is a reminder that no one has to navigate the difficulties of parenting alone.
