- Kurenai has red eyes that look a lot like Tomoeless Sharingan. Why is that? Kurenai Yuhi is a Jounin of the Leaf Village and a Genjutsu Specialist. Her most prominent fight was Kurenai vs Itachi when she tried to put Itachi Uchiha under her genjutsu and got hit by Itachi's genjutsu reversal. In Naruto Shippuden Kurenai and Asuma got together and had a daughter, Mirai, but after that Kurenai pretty much disappeared from the story.
But why does Kurenai have red eyes? Is she a forgotten Uchiha descendant? And why is her jutsu plant based? Does she have wood style? Is the a Senju descendant?

@@banshotenin1178 Also at this point in the series no one knew how far the genjutsu negation skills went or had a sense of scale about it. I watched this when it was weekly instead of binge watching it like most people did later on, most people commenting on the manga sites didn't think she was acting foolish but more along of how tough Itachi was and how he can hand sign so fast even Kakashi couldn't see it.

The kanji kurenai means a dark, deep red colour. I think she was meant to symbolise a rose and the beautiful red colour of the flower through the pattern designed on her clothing, representing thorns, and her red eyes representing the petals of the flower

We keep saying that Sakura was a “Genjustsu prodigy” but I think that what was actually implied was that she was an exceptional chakra controller (hence the chakra tree training and, consequently, genjutsu control). She turned out to be a really good chakra controller indeed, as she had high medical proficiency AND Tsunade’s “strength” - which was an absurd level of chakra control, and not actually force
Just rewatched Naruto this last month early on they definitely say she’s a genjutsu specialist kikashi says this like 3 times leading up to chunin exams and then they just never mention it again

Its Just that Most Ninjas would use theyre skills with chakra control more Like Into genjutsu thats why IT was told to us.
To be fair on that point there was also the "ying and yang chakra", and Genjutsu was kind of the only specialized jutsu to be pointed as Ying Chakra based.
Afterwards they made the two in like... The two reincarnations and what not... but at the time Sakura was specifically good at the chakra element that was used for Genjutsu.

i mean it's not exactly like the genjutsu stuff was untouched, she was shown to be practically resistant to genjutsu, even the otsutsuki one in the last that toneri made, even breaking the jinchuriki out. But yea wasted potential for sure
Hashirama encouraged the Senju clan to intermarry with other clans in the village as he wanted to spread the strong blood through the village instead of just the clan. He encouraged them to drop their pride so they would have a stronger village as a whole instead of just the clan, thats how they disappeared into konoha. Also the Chinoike clan has the Ketsuryugan which is also a red eye

I don't think there's much of a point to this. Uchiha have black eyes, not red. The sharingan is red but it's not their natural eye color. Kurenai having natural red eyes is completely unrelated I think. Irrc it's related to her name? Her name is the color of her eyes I think?
its a stretch using eye color as a justification lol and its not true that all uchiha have dark brown eyes (not black its easy to confuse cause artists dont use brown pigment in their work ) its just a common color for japanese people kakashi had the same color as did hashirama and yamato/tenzo, as well as might guy, lee, an others
Kurenai's eyes are i suppose an inherited trait of her clan which specializes primarily in genjutsu it could have significance but kishimoto didnt think that far for her character development and it shows with how he essentially wrote her out of the story by making her become pregnant with asuma's child who would then later take her place on the scene. it was a wasted opportunity in my opinion would have liked to have learned more about her since she was prominent in the original naruto as one of the top jonin etc. and it kinda sad cause even the lesser known jonin (aoba, genma, shirado, Hayate and ebisu) got screen time and exposition lol

@@Logan20079 black is not a registerable color in the human iris sphere you must be thinking of the pupil which is the single dark or black circle in the center of your eyes. but to be more specific to your point manga artists do not possess brown ink so often times when they want to portray a character as having dark brown, dark blue, or even gray colored eyes they have to paint it as pitch black and then have to later tell concept artists for their book covers that a specific character has a specific color of eyes etc.
if a real person where to have pitch black colored eyes that would mean there is something medically wrong with their iris' or their eyes suffered heavy blood clotting etc. thus giving the iris a "blackened" colorization

I like Kurenai's design I just wish we got to see her more. Itachi and Tayuya are both genjutsu specialist but they also have ninjutsu (fire and summonings) surely Kurenai has some skills other than genjutsu? Something to round her out a bit more
Issue is KIshi seemed to have made the 4 jonin as a package deal all representing the 4 mains forms of jutsu.

NcHammer had a cool theory about the Senju intentionally giving up their names at marriage to show solidarity to the leaf and to increase the strength of the whole village and not just their Clan

Now if Kurenai was a surviving Uchiha like Sasuke, then she would've awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan when Asuma died.
That's why her last name was disguised. Also, just because you experience someone that you love dying doesn't mean you'll awaken a Mangekyou Sharingan. Most Uchihas don't even get a base Sharingan

It could be that sharingan was just that rare, or that most Uchiha didn’t have what it took to become shinobi. But the impression I got back in part one was that it was just rare, and only reserved for special families of Uchiha.

Sounds like missed opportunity. A lot can be done with characters like her. Exploring interclan relations would've make the series a bit more interesting and expand on its world building. Just imagine the potential of exploring the Yuhi as a result of intermarriages that did occur a long time ago as an attempt to proliferate the Uchiha clan throughout the lands and Kurenai's eyes are a result of some mutation of sorts of these intermarriages. Speaking of clans, there is a Japanese tradition of adopting a non blood related male into the family and uses the family's surname. Wouldn't this be happened to clans like the Senju? Masashi could've incorporate it into the story.

Making Kurenai a member of the Uchiha clan would have made a lot of sense for her character. I guess we can chalk it up as one of those missed opportunities that happen in most series.

My theory about the lack of Senju in Konaha is simply that having the same clan as the 1st and 2nd Hokage would put a passive red target on your back. After a couple generations there were probably a lot more non combatant Senju that would be targets for enemy shinobi.
The senju dropped their last names and took their partners' last names. Like minato namikaze, he is clearly related to tsunade. Its thought that he is actualy tobimru's grandchild. The leaf is full of nepotism babies so minato wasnt just a no one thst was powerful he was a direct decendant of the founder

I have been trying to defend Kurenai vs Itachi on Reddit. People keep talking as if they knew the extent of Itachi's abilities when it was literally his first introduction didn't know the extent of Itachi and Kakashi's Anbu tenure. Also, I think her father prevented Kakashi and the rest of the chunin from fighting the 9 nine tails to save their assets. Kakashi was a prodigy and his power was invaluable to lose at the time. Also the last name thing makes sense. No one knew Naruto was a Namikaze nor would they think he was an Uzumaki without red hair

I don't think Kurenai is meant to be useless or weak. As Dygo said, series, especially later in second part, focuses more on top 0.1% shinobi with abilities, that are much higher above than common rest. I imagine among common characters, Kurenai is probably one of strongest Leaf shinobi. Her genjutsu is high level and would take on any common higher ranked shinobi. Problem is, she had to face Itachi - Uchiha who has unique genjutsu, that basically counters any other high level genjutsu user.

Is just a theory based on how weird Kurenai's eyes are, only she and her father (Was he canon or filler?) have eyes like that, that's why i always had the head canon that she had Uchiha blood, her wierd eyes would be kinda like a mutated tomoeless Sharingan that can't evolve nor be turned off and the only power they give to the "Kurenai clan" would be being better at visual genjutsus, not as good as a Sharingan user but it would give them a boost, that would be the reason why Kurenai was a genjutsu specialist, all of this is just head canon of course but i think it does make sense, I mean why is the Uchiha clan the only one that doesn't have another branch?

She doesnt have any tomoe and her eyes are red all the time, so she cant awaken a mangeko sharingan due to that mutation but she also cant go blind due to it.

It absolutely destroys my heart that you didn’t notice her actually PUTTING KISAME UNDER GENJUTSU!! The feat was so much more impressive because we see her basically successfully put TWO Akatsuki members under genjutsu at the same time, and, obviously, Itachi could use a counter, but Kisame seemed absolutely stumped at the moment and if Itachi wasn’t there, Kisame would’ve been in trouble
Also the fact that Kurenai was able to escape Itachi's counter almost right away

I can explain how that happened. It's Hashirama's fault. Hashirama wanted to build Konoha so much, that he had the rest of his clan believing that once it was complete, this village would be the BE ALL AND END ALL OF PEACE. The Senju truly believed that the village would end ALL wars and they settled into this existence way too quickly. Well, when the 1st Ninja War happened, they lost MOST of their sons to war, eradicating the family surname and a lot of the daughters as well, efectively killing off the bloodline save for a few survivors.
When Tobirama became Hokage, he wanted to subjugate the Uchiha clan since he was born and grew up in a time where they were still enemies and he carried a lot of that hate for the rest of his life (even if he denied it in public.) His actions made the remaining Senju enemies of the Uchiha clan and this would result in the Uchiha ALLOWING their Senju comrades to have "accidents" in the field during the 2nd and 3rd Ninja Wars; things like not communicating vital intel, not being quick enough to supply medical equipment, not attempting to rescue allies who had fallen behind enemy lines. This would continue until the elders decided that the Uchiha and Senju would not be allowed to work together, which most likely saved Tsunade's life.

Also, Uchihas who unlock the sharingan in their own eyes only have them turn red when they are USING it. The only sharingan users whose eyes are red all of the time are non-Uchihas who have had Uchiha eyes transplanted into them (like Kakasi and Danzo) and so don't have the ability to turn them off. Kurenai can't have gotten her eyes that way, since her father AND daughter also have them.
Granted, we do have an example of a ninja who gains a visual jutsu without the associated eye look (Himawari can use Byakugan, but doesn't have the Hyuuga "blind" look to her eyes), so I suppose the reverse could happen, but it seems unlikely.

The Senju didn't disappear, they just diffused into the village. Choosing to not take the Senju family name will prevent any of them from just joining together to be a faction or noble family. Having a Senju family may be interpreted as Konoha being a Senju-led village. As they were probably the most powerful clan, it may cause dissident with many other clans (eg. Uchiha). There are still many other noble clans in the Leaf village, but none are actually powerful enough to really take over. The Senju splitting up among all the random families and small clans makes them stronger in turn.

Awesome 📹. When Sasuke awakened the Sharingan he had tomoes in both eyes. In the right eye 👁 the tomoe is the the top right corner and in the left eye 👁 the tomoe is the lower left corner foreshadowing when he gets the Ethernal Mangekyo Sharingan when Sasuke awakens it, the triangle 🔺️ in the left eye pointing down and the right triangle pointing up.

i think canonically, if this is true, it would make sense when kakashi had them observe itachi when he first returned to the village as an observation of potential for them and having them be the interceptor is a chess move on kakashi’s part because of the fact that kakashi had never used the sharingan against another sharingan before in an applicationary sense prior. knowing that kisami had a large chakra weapon, having chakra sensitivity based on this analysis, genjustu vs. genjutsu, it was kakashi’s operational maneuver make sense, because he steps in after so quarter to half sharingan makes sense. so it makes the rest make sense.

During the previous wars he essentially sent out Senju to their deaths by giving them suicide missions.
Perfect example is Nawaki, a 12/13 year old being sent to a foreign battle field while being the LAST known male Senju and not just that, but that ONLY known male direct descendent of Hashirama Senju.
Danzo was the Anbu commander at that moment in time so he had the authority to assign missions. Not to mention his manipulation of Hiruzen.

The Senju were literally royalty and known to have incredible physical prowess/chakra yet they all died during war? When they previously survived THE WARRING STATES against the Uchiha??
The Uchiha were a massive part of the village but decades passed where there was never any resolutions to their internal conflicts? Conflicts that ALL previous Hokage were well aware of???
The Uzumaki, the sister clan of the Senju that lives literally a country away (if the Wave theory is correct) were reduced to single digits by an invasion of at least one countries army? At a time when Danzo had spies in enemy village through his root operations?? I find it VERY hard to believe it was a total surprise and somehow no one noticed an army marching across potentially several countries.
Slightly off topic we all know how Naruto went directly from Genin to hokage but not one ever talks about sasuke basically did the same but as Naruto's right hand man

With Kisame starting the interaction by binding Asuma in a weapon clash, I keep thinking of how Kurenai could’ve turned the fight in their favor for a moment. The biggest question is how could she attempt to put Kisame under genjutsu if Itachi is free to assault her with shuriken (assuming its the fastest way he can interrupt her)?
I then thought maybe Asuma could move Samehada into the path of the shuriken to block Kurenai as she genjutsu’s Kisame, but that’s assuming Asuma is strong enough to move Samehada against Kisame’s will. Maybe Kisame could be distracted thinking of how he can avoid the genjutsu and that gives Asuma the chance to do it. Then Kisame would have to move to avoid the genjutsu or block it with Samehada (assuming the genjutsu can’t move through it or can get absorbed by it), or get captured in the genjutsu and Asuma would be free to chase Itachi with extending chakra blades. Asuma could also attempt to attack a stunned Kisame only to be stopped by Itachi’s shuriken (again the quickest and safest option because he doesn’t have time for handsigns for ninjutsu or non-ocular genjutsu and trying to taijutsu Asuma is dangerous cuz his chakra blades are basically unstoppable).
While Kurenai succeeds in “killing” Kisame (Kisame would get released from the genjutsu by pain & use Samehada to drain Kurenai of chakra to heal or Samehada would attack Kurenai independently until Kisame escapes the genjutsu) and Asuma chases Itachi (stopping him from using handsigns and probably falling into the finger genjutsu, assuming he’s not ignorant enough to look him in the eyes), Kakashi would arrive. Kakashi could use long ranged ninjutsu or shuriken to stop Kisame from killing Kurenai and Itachi from killing Asuma, then Kurenai could get Asuma out of the genjutsu and the 3v2 fight comtinues like in the original plot.
Okay this is my theory on this....the Uchiha also has Main and Branch families.
The main can get tomoe while the branch are tomoe-less.
Since the Uchiha takes pride in their Sharingan, the branch cannot inherit the Uchiha name and have to take on a different name and live away from the main family.
If you think about it, it makes a little more sense and relatable to the Tomoe-less Sharingan theory of this video.
never seen a tomoeless sharingan and it wouldn't make sense since they most of them awaken the sharingan all of them fight if they choose to be a shinobi in the police force unlike the Hyuga who have the branch family to fight for the main family.

@DygoKnight I take it. You didn’t watch the final episodes of Naruto of Sasuke Journey? Because they explained that there are other clans with red eyes that also specialized in Genjutsu. Red eyes just happens to be a main genetic characteristic.
Even the series takes place in the world of ninja magic people don’t seem to understand how mutations and cross DNA effects generations of children over the course of years. I mean that’s why I kind of like this theory because it makes sense. I mean look at ninja powers that is hereditary and something that is in their blood. Now imagine if you were to take someone from another family, who’s blood has a different power. It would make sense that certain results would happen…either the child would perhaps have connections to both family powers. They may have a merger of both of the powers, especially if the powers have a similar nature to them. Or there’s a chance that both bloodlines could eventually cancel each other out, and the child may not develop any abilities of the two family bloodlines. So I like this theory…it adds a little extra hot water to the mix and stir things up. Plus the whole idea of keeping the bloodline. Pure kind of does not sit well for me in the first place I mean in a very weird way it kind of implies that they were at some level inbreeding!!..🤢🤢🤮
Also, I feel like that’s the reason why sarada uchiha isn’t exactly following the same rules as the original Uchiha rules. I mean she’s not a actual pure blood. She is the byproduct of a pure Uchiha and Haruno. But she still was able to acquire her father’s eyes! Prove that the purity of the bloodline does not necessarily prove that offspring may or may not acquire the family trait. It may also explain why the conditions don’t match up to the original conditions that members of the clan had to meet to acquire the power to use the jutsu. I think people forget that when they complain about how she is acquiring her abilities, she’s not a pure blood so It could mean that she is not controlled by the same limitations as a pure blood would have. And talk to anyone who has a degree in genetics in biology that sometimes the mixture of genetic traits can result in a stronger more resistant offspring that is not limited by the same possible, genetic default that the parents had. Which is why I feel like she is going to create a new generation as time goes by.
I just think it was a coincidence. Uchiha don't even have red eyes they're default is black. It's only red when sharingan is engaged. Kirenai is red by default

Kisame would'ev been a even worse opponent for Kurenai because he basically is a perfect junchuriki while wielding Samehada, making him impervious to genjutsu. The chakra flow is unified and when Kisame is put in a genjutsu Samehada would just help him snap out of it like Kurama would do for Naruto after they were on good terms, or even Bee and his tailed beast.
I never understood why ninja just didn’t naturally pulse their chakra every few seconds. Would make most of them immune to all but the most skillfully used genjutsu

Wood Release is the combination of water and earth chakra. Kurenai's chakra nature is Yin Release. I agree that giving her red eyes was a confusing design choice. I could go for her being from some branch clan of the Uchiha if that branch was shunned for mixing blood with non-Uchihas. I don't think I can get behind the idea of her being a Senju other than the broader idea that the Senju may have married outside of their clan to unify Konoha. It's one or the other. A Senju-Uchiha child would have been a major character in the series. Maybe her creation had a different idea for her that went away. Or maybe the detail about the Uchiha not marrying outside of the clan came later and so any blood lineage of hers had to be scrapped.

hoenstly im not suprised, because from what kakashi has said, it seemed by this time when they were grown, the village had become very hostile to the uchia to such a point that when guy and kakashi walk through the uchia district they feel like ppl are watching them and it dosent seem warm and inviting, as their the only two non uchia in the whole district, like the village walled itself off from them, and anyone who entered was looked at as a spy. which wasnt really so wrong.
