Technically this can happen with married pairs too. Who can forget those mismatched R32, R40, and R42 units post overhaul, notably cars 4665 and 4460? Still though, I feel like the service requirements are a tad too tight. The 1 train should be assigned about 400-450 cars for a full 24 train per hour service between South Ferry and 215th Street, maybe more cars if we can reconfigure 242nd Street to turn around more than 15 tph. That way we can go ahead with pulling whole 5-car consists out of service and no one will notice the difference? After all, we lost R142 cars 6346-6350 and no one is crying about that.
It's not necessarily a big deal to rearrange the sets if any cars are damaged beyond repair. You just end up with some mismatched sets. I'm not sure whether 1934 came from the shuttle or the 6, because that's where the single cars are all assigned. The R46s also have several mismatched sets due to accidents. I'm not sure why some fleets are so much more accident-prone than others. The R46s and R62s/R62As have been in a bunch of accidents over the years which caused a lot of cars to be written off. Meanwhile, no R68s or R68As have ever been written off. 6346-6350 is then only NTT class equipment to be written off, and the R142s have been in service for well over 20 years now. I think with CBTC, using 4 or 5 car sets is necessary, since you only need one set of CBTC gear for the entre set, rather than in every car. Also, with full width cabs, using singles or married pairs would waste a lot of space. As for the fleet size, the A Division is in much better shape than then B Division. The R188 order added several sets, and even more sets were gained by shortening the R62As from 11 cars to 10 when they were reassigned to the 6. The B Division has been shorthanded ever since the premature retirement of the R44s in 2010, which still hasn't been recovered from.
The only difference in 1934 and the rest of the 240 Street sets is the horn location in the cab. Not to mention this use to be part of the Shuttle when they ran them.

I do remembering the R62AS had first ran on the Broadway 3 line with the car numbers 1905 up to 20 and 21 before they were sent to the 7 Flushing line and now back on the Pelham 6 line.
Now I see why they have the R62S from the 4 Jerome Ave line on the three line the replacements of the R62AS on the 3 Broadway line. One can argue that's it's one of benefits of using single car units over the married units.
