  • Here, we see a set of R142As testing a new brake package, Metroflexx. Metroflexx is WABTEC's newest rapid transit airbrake control system. This video shows the first time these cars ventured out to the Rockaway test track to be put through stopping distance tests. MTA New York City Transit is commendable for following commonly accepted industry best practices by testing and prequalifying new railcar subsystems in this manner!
R142As are "A" division equipment, which runs on the numbered lines and is physically narrower than the wider "B" division equipment that runs on the lettered lines. However, "A" division cars like the R142A are capable of running on "B" division trackage when appropriate arrangements are made. This is an exceptionally rare and unusual occurrence; R142As have not ventured to this part of the system in a very, very long time. Enjoy!
