    Thanks for doing this with me Don, the end video here is fantastic, and you really made it easy and fun for me to be a part of it. It's also nice to see that people are enjoying the video, and I'm personally really pleased to of had this opportunity to do this with you, and to bring some attention to the THPS community. It's probably worth saying that all the techniques shown here aren't hacks per se - all of these can be done on an original store-bought version of the game, on their original platform(s). If anyone would be interested in getting THUGPRO and joining us online, please feel free to reach out, it's quite a simple installation process and I'd be happy to help! Look forward to seeing you all on the new game - keep an eye out for me on twitch where I will most certainly be streaming it on release! Thanks again Don and great job on this final video!

      Yeah that’s so true! Such a great point. Something that didn’t make it into the final video was: I asked James how he was spinning so fast. Turns out it’s a hack of the spin animation and doesn’t affect the score at all, it’s purely a style flair. Impressive to see a community that really cares about the style of the mechanics like they do.

    The demo has me pumped for the new THPS game but I have a feeling that I will always play THUGPRO because of its insane mechanics as demonstrated by this video. I know the new THPS game won't have those mechanics and that's fine I feel a remake game is used to bring back a dead game and reviving it to a new generation of players, maybe even get new players interested in THUGPRO so, in the end, it's a win-win situation for the fanbase.

    • @GameBrainOfficial
      @GameBrainOfficial  4 года назад +4

      Yeah I agree mate there’s definitely something for everyone between the remake and THUG Pro. I also love just replaying the originals to be honest, I kind of prefer the jagged polygons to modern visuals...maybe an unpopular opinion?

      @ZEN_Ivan 4 года назад +4

      @@GameBrainOfficial I like those jagged rough polygons from the late 90s to early 2000's they have an aesthetic appeal like no other. But looking at leaks from THPS1+2 I have a suspicion that this game will give off a different type of feeling, not the same one from 20 years ago but its own identity.

    • @GameBrainOfficial
      @GameBrainOfficial  4 года назад +2

      @@ZEN_Ivan Yeah to me you can't remove the first few THPS games from their graphics. It's why I'm not always sold on the premise of a remaster / remake. I figure if it was great then, it's still great and it's more nostalgic to play the originals.
      I'm currently playing Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 and I think that's a perfect example of a game that NEEDED a remaster, because it ran so poorly on PS2 and it's art style translates so well to a remaster...

    You ask at the end if as a player I'd rather get my Tony Hawk fix from the remake or THUG Pro, and the answer is both for similar reasons.
    I'm a fan of the franchise and have played every single mainline Neversoft entry from THPS1 to Proving Ground, and what I get out of the games is just a relaxed, fun arcade experience. I like doing the goals, finding the secrets, unlocking videos and characters, and just generally messing around in them at my leisure. I've never cared about become an expert player on the level of the interviewee, so I suppose by comparison I'm very much a casual player. When I first learned about THUG Pro the #1 thing that appealed to me about it was having every single level across all the games in one package, that's it. Not to sound detached, but I didn't care for the online play, I didn't care for the community aspect of it, I just like the idea of having every single level in one place for me to load up and waste a couple hours in to just free skate and jump from level to level. (At this point it might be relevant to mention I'm very much a single-player type of gamer and have never cared for online play anyways no matter the franchise, unless it's with my friends I know personally IRL).
    That appeal of THUG Pro is similar to how the remake appeals to me, except it's obviously just the levels of the first 2 games. However, it also brings along the goals, the secrets, unlocking things, etc. that I enjoyed doing throughout the entire franchise, so that's what I'm going to enjoy doing in the remake as well, with the added enhancement of all new modern graphics.
    I think the issue with interviewing these types of players is that they somewhat lose touch with the 99% of players who play these games and why they play them. The part in the interview when he was disappointed with the remake because he couldn't do the tricks from THUG Pro and couldn't play the game the way he was used to soured me a bit for that reason. Logically, they're on two completely different engines, and those tricks are the result of glitches and not a dev-intended way of playing the games, so there should have been no expectation of those tricks working in the remake. I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure those tricks don't work in the games made after THUG 2 anyways, which is what THUG Pro is based on. He did pull me back in a little bit though when he goes on to talk about how the remake recaptures the spirit of the first two games, and that it will satisfy fans of those games, which is the intended purpose of the remake so I'm glad he didn't just completely lose sight of the point of it. His point of view is valuable as a longtime expert player of the games, but it's a also a very niche point of view that doesn't really reflect on the wider fanbase. Besides, as with every franchise, I'm absolutely certain a niche community of super expert level players will develop around the remake anyways and over time develop and have a history of it's own.
    Great work with the video as always.

    Buck does not sound like he is "disappointed the bugs were removed" rather he is justifiably disappointed that a set of unintended mechanics that created a far deeper level of gameplay, and to use his words; artistic expression, was not included in the remake. Though these mechanics were glitches/bugs, these are the same type of mechanics that keep the hardcore coming back to the games while also not hindering the casual experience (see the entirety of Smash Bros Melee or FDC cancelling in Street Fighter for example). Great video as always!

    more around style instead of points? id say thats what i was trying to do with the thps games trying my best to emulate hard to do real life tricks lol. but then of course ea skate came out and that game allowed me to play skate games how ive always wanted to play skate games. Skate was where the game at its core was purely about something more abstract than just score chasing. and its interesting to see that THPS community went through their own transformation into this which i find really interesting.

  • @extralyfe
    @extralyfe 4 года назад

    the first point made is pretty interesting, mainly because when reverts were added back in THPS3, a lot of the levels came with robot lines like he's discussing - two quarter pipes with any number of rails or ledges between them. that's when point totals got completely out of had, because, if you were quick enough, you could easily add multipliers to your combo without really having to balance. Neversoft kept building areas to support that style of play all the way until American Wasteland - maybe all the games, but, that was the last mainline THPS game I played, so, I can't be sure.
    this kind of outraged the THPS1/2 high score crowd, because a lot of the original guys who pushed for scores did so by getting around the level as creatively as possible in a time before manuals and, then, reverts. the new robot combo meta was boring as hell, in contrast.
    so, this push towards style that you're crediting AndyTHPS with is just how the original games were usually played before people realized THPS3 let nearly anyone cheese out millions of points. not trying to take anything from AndyTHPS, he was a part of all those same communities and was incredible at the game, to boot.
    here's a compilation of some of the oldest combos I could find, and I think you'll agree the level-spanning style you're seeing in this video is in the same spirit of the best combos from THPS1.

    I think the remake is a great idea!
    Simply put, it gives us the best version of the THPS 1-4 era, Like 'Thug pro' did for the more modern entries
    People who prefer the modern enhancements have had thug pro for years,
    But now us classic fans have our own compilation! and who knows! with mods/dlc, we may even get maps for THPS2/3 as well!
    Personally I have no problems with Thug 1/2/pro, But I still (personally) prefer the mechanics and levels of the earlier entries.
    And now I have a game (with online support/campaign) that caters to THPS-classic fans more than THUG pro ever could.

  • @realCyng

    That's kinda an issue I have with these super pro level players of games, where they rely so heavily on bugs as mechanics then get upset when they're taken away. Like, yeah of course they weren't put in the remake, they weren't meant to be there in the first place, they're bugs.

    • @sTIMPZtXo
      @sTIMPZtXo 4 года назад +1

      @@kd9183 Stick to a consistent line (such as the one in this video, it circles around the level) - minimize double grinds, or grinding the same object twice in a row, either build base score by doing a wall ride acid drop into a giant air, and/or use specials with the wall ride to transfer over the secret room. 10 million is 100k x 100, easiest to think of it like that. Once you learn to build base it's pretty easy to build that 100k base, and then you can get the multiplier up by using flip tricks and "bouncing" between objects (manual + flip trick + manual, etc). I think I've also seen there's no penalty for switching grinds mid-grind, so that may add multiplier as well.
      A circling-around-the-level line is ideal rather than the back + forth that the quarter pipes provide with wall plants, as all those double grinds really hurt grind balance

    Appreciate the interview, but ThugPro players are the worst types of people to review this Remake.
    They compare everything to the modded, buggy mess they've been playing for years, instead of the original official games.
    Not only that, but they never take into account what makes a good skateboarding game in 2020, comparing it to its peers like Skater XL or Session. It's like those pro players are stuck in 2006

  • @JohnSmithson999
    @JohnSmithson999 4 года назад

    To answer the final question in the video, for me as a casual player THUGPro is still the definitive way to play THPS due to it still having more content being added. THPS 1+ 2 on the other hand isn't a new game, it's the same levels we've played a thousand times in the original series and in THUGPro also. The remake will have a Create a Park and if that is robust enough to keep long term players coming back to play it then it's on par with THUGPro.
    An example I want to give is THPS 1 and 2 have been remade twice before and no one plays them nowadays. Even if they had amazing graphics and good engines, at the end of the day THUGPro simply has more content. I think for this reason Activision should have Vicarious Visions create DLC like new levels to extend the life time of the game. Otherwise I'm not sure if the remake's community will last any longer than a couple of months at most unfortunately.

    • @GameBrainOfficial
      @GameBrainOfficial  4 года назад +1

      It’s a great point about the games having already been remade. I think this remake is a combo of Activision seeing just how much more they can wring from the THPS series, while also testing the waters for future remakes.
      This bit didn’t make it into the video but Ralph’s certain if this remake does well a version of 3 + 4 is very likely.
      I’m personally not that interested in remaking games for nostalgia sake, though.
