I am a violinist. Just got a viola and immediately changed the strings to this recommendation. Am very pleased with the sound, especially the C string. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks for the recommendation Malte . I am a fiddler and recently traded one of my violin bows for a viola . Your recommendation works very well on my instrument with one adjustment C -spiracore tungsten heavy G- Helicore medium (Evah P didn’t work as well on my viola) D-Evah P medium (Helicore didn’t work as well) A-Larsen heavy
that set up is great for a more mellow viola to start of with but a bright instrument might sound a little harsh with the Evah Pirazzi. The Spirocore C and Larsen A can be great on just about any viola ;) I am currently trying out D'Addario Kaplan Amo for Viola.
I’m currently using A and D PI strings and G and C Obligato. Very interesting mix that works great. My old combination was A Larsen, D Permanent, G Helicore and C Obligato
I normally use a full set of Obligato strings for my viola, but now that I'm due a string change I'm thinking of changing things up. I've just been watching a lot of reviews of various strings on RUclips so I'm interested to see which strings I'll end up trying!
I have an Arthur Richardson Tertis Model. Monster but not heavy, great for chamber and orchestra work with a massive sound but not much use if you want to play Paganini 10ths. I find your comments on string really interesting. On my instrument Larsen or Jargar A works well. Evah Perazzi gold ten to whistle a bit, for the D string I use a softer sounding string like Pirastro Eudoxa and Spiracore for the G and C.
I use a very small French viola (14.8 “) and I prefer a warmer sound. I have tried several strings but found that Zyex work best. It provides clarity in the higher registers, on my viola. And a cellist (more alto than tenor) sound on the G and C. But I am always looking for that string that improves her sound. I will try the combination that you suggested though. The string length though sometimes is an issue since I have since a small viola
@@JoyleiaJo i actually started using a different set since this and I love it! It’s the Larsen A, Evah Pirazzi C and thomastik vision D and G. It sounds amazing 🤩!
I wish my viola was that size. It is a fairly small one, 15 3/8”, but with a wide belly and as l get older l find it too big and heavy; one of the reasons I have turned back to violin for the most part. I am on the lookout for a smaller viola with a narrower belly.
Malte, thank you so much! Really valuable, very specific and, at parts, funny. If you don't mind please, is there an economic way to purchase Larsen A heavy tension, Evah Pirazzi D&G medium tension, and Thomastik Infeld Spirocore Tungsten C strings? Or have D'Addario H410 Helicore improved enough to not reach for the most expensive stars? I'm a beginner, but I've always found a gold E string absolutely worth buying for the violin. Is there one set viola string set which you'd point a beginner to, please ? Love 'n Light best & cheers, Sean
I always use a jargar a and dominant d,g,c. I think thats just what we are set up with in the dry desert southwest. Ive tried others but everytime its been a terrible waste of money. And then i take them off because my ear never gets used to them. I do wish id find a game changer though. Maybe i win the lottery and get a wide deeeep bombastic viola....until then im scrubbing away in my gulag.
Of course the best strings for viola are the ones that best suit the particular instrument and player. I'm very happy with a plain gut A and Eudoxa D, G, and C. Second choice would be Obligato, but really no synthetic core string produces quite the correct sound, especially on open strings, pizzicato, or notes played without vibrato.
Thank you for an absolutely amazing video! I would love to know your opinion on Evah Parazzi Gold strings - D and G in comparisson to Green D and G and also your overall opinion on Warchal Amber Viola strings which I currently use and love the sound, but am looking for an upgrade to your suggested ones and if its worth it. Thank you! 🎻😃
I find this video very interesting! I think that strings have a huge impact on the sound of an instrument and I like experimenting with them. If you ever have the time to reply to this comment I will leave a few questions. Firstly, isn't there a big diference in sound and timbre from the high tension Larsen A to the medium Eva Pirazi green D? I like my viola to sound quite even, but I know that some people like the D string to be mellower. Secondly, have you tryed the heavy tension Evah Pitazzi gold A? If yes, how does it compare to the heavy tension Larsen A? I have tryed the medium tension Larsen and Evah Pirazzi A and I found the Evah Pirazzi one a bit more briliant. Lastly, do you use the heavy tension or the medium tension Spirocore Tungsten C? I just want to doublececk if I understood corectly from the video. :) Have a nice day! I am glad I found this channel.
I have tried the Evah Pirazzi gold A, but also just in medium and I found that the Larsen had more power. I don‘t think that the medium D is too week in comparison to the A string. At my violas it brings a round sound over all strings.
I understand this video was posted awhile ago but where do you find the best place to buy strings? I’ve searched everywhere with no luck. Also what brand of rosin do you find best to get that nice quality and tone?
Can you list the string you point out in your video? The transcript of you video is not accurate in terms of the brand of strings. Thank you. Your video is excellent.
How would you adjust the recommendation to accommodate the following requirement? A) Tune up C -> D and G -> A or B) Tune down D -> C and A -> G Thanks.
My viola did not like the Spirocore tungsten C. Too much tension and did not articulate well. The Larsen strong A is too thick. I did not like the feel under my fingers. I do like the EP green G and D with EP gold C and A. Violas are so unique and unlike violins. You really need to find the perfect combination for your own viola. I want to try Rondos and PIs. But so expensive.

Thanks for the recommendation Malte .

Your recommendation works very well on my instrument with one adjustment
C -spiracore tungsten heavy
G- Helicore medium (Evah P didn’t work as well on my viola)
D-Evah P medium (Helicore didn’t work as well)
A-Larsen heavy

I completely agree with Mr. Schaefer's string setup combination, which I also use -- except Larsen A. I've only used Medium, but will try the Forte.

I’m looking forward to trying your combination!
Try D'addario Helicore Medium Tension Strings, they're easier to bow because they're a tad bit thinner

I’m currently using Thomastik Vision for the lower three strings and Jargar for the A string! I’m liking it so far!
I always went Jarger A, but am looking for an alternative
Thank you so much for this video! What is the scale length of your viola?
Dankeschön

Have you tried using violin strings creatively on your viola, tuning down etc. For my petite 1827 viola.

...and yes I really use the heavy tension Tungsteen Spirocore, a wonderful string, but quite thick and strong.
Just ordered your recommendation for my new viola. Hope I love it. Thanks!
How many violist does it take to screw in the lightbulb? Did someone say “screw in the light”!?

Hello. I have a very serious viola question to ask you. Can my wife get pregnant playing my viola?
Thank you.
@@johnpeskey4519 Perfect response! Go Vikings!

In summary: Spirocore C, Medium tension Evah Green Pirazzi G & G and High tension Larsen A.
Please write the name of the C string. Thank you for your videos.
Spirocore tungsteen heavy tension (stark) by thomastik/Infeld
@@viotech4545 : Indeed, nothing better...^^
Good all Germany sounds now a days pretty NS
What do you think about Vision Solo strings?
I just started using vision strings and in my opinion they sound better than dominant
How would you adjust the recommendation to accommodate the following requirement?
A) Tune up C -> D and G -> A
or
B) Tune down D -> C and A -> G
Thanks.

Evah Pirazzis do not last long. If you play 4 hours per day, they'll last for 2 1/2 months.
I found using this combination of strings, the sound alone got my girlfriend pregnant…..
Hahahaha the first joke is unexpected
