This song Hereafter is a follow up to Holy Hell’s (Album) lead single Doomsday, which was a song dedicated to their guitarist Tom who passed away from cancer (Dan’s brother). Their last few albums are actually a story line of grief. All Our God’s Have Abandoned Us (Album) contains lyrics of Nihilism and the inevitably of death in negative connotations, as Tom was writing his last lyrics for the band while enduring his battle with cancer. Gone With The Wind (Song) is the best example of that, and it’s a story of self loathing and wondering why they were even born in the first place if they were just going to die. Holy Hell (Album) was written after Tom’s passing and is dedicated to him and contains songs about accepting the intense emotions and sorrow and grief that comes with loss (Hereafter and Doomsday). Their new album, For Those That Wish To Exist, puts death in a more positive connotation. There is realization that everyone must die and that no life is complete without death. After years and years of grief and turmoil for the band, a realization is finally reached on the conclusion of this album “Dying Is Absolutely Safe” when Sam sings the lyrics “Death is not my enemy”. Death is seen on this track as a reward and a symbol of relief and peacefulness. This track is so powerful because it was their first step towards this realization that nothing lasts forever and to appreciate every moment of our profound existence because we’re all here for a purpose.

100% If you listen to the part at the very end of the Doomsday video, you'll hear the same theme in Hereafter.

Those two songs alone take you on such an emotional journey... So much pain and anger, hurt and confusion. Having to lose someone is never easy, but watching it happen, knowing it is happening and you are powerless to stop it... I think that will always hurt so much more than a quick death where there's no time to ponder on why, why it's happening, why you can't help, why no one can help. That kind of thing leaves permanent scars on your mind, no matter how much time passes and how well you have finally been able to accept and move on, it will always be there in your mind and you'll always find yourself getting stuck on it years later. These two songs captured that feeling, the feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, anger, pain, denial mixed with trying to accept something you can't understand. These guys went through hell to write these songs, and as incredible as both songs are, the amount of hurt it took to get to a place to write them, I wouldn't wish on anyone. It's true though, what they say, the greatest art comes from the most painful, dark places.

I can't find my exact post about it but, AOGHAU being the pain of living and dying with cancer, Holy Hell as the depression and grieving, and FTTWTE being the time to move forward from it is how I've always seen it. Can't say how many times I've watched the Holy Ghost doc, it's a weird catharsis for me.

This album is infinitely more intense when you know it was the last one featuring any work from Tom. Tom was the lead guitarist and lyricist (among other things), and the brother of the drummer, Dan. IIRC a portion of his work on this album was composed while he was in the hospital. He passed in 2016 from skin cancer. I honestly think that's why everything just feels so emotionally intense in this album. Sam's screams are just...painfully brutal. SO emotionally charged and SO full of anger and pain. It's present in the instrumental as well, especially in Dan. The drums throughout this album are immaculate. You can definitely tell this was a mourning album.

Great question about the fills! I don’t know Dan or what his process is specially, but being a fan of the band and their extended discography- this song specially feels like he planned to use that big fill (you know the one) as a motif of sorts. Typically the fills vary from part to part within their songs. Like his late brother Tom, he is also very involved in the song writing process and vision of the band so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that that kind of attention to detail would extend to the drum fills. Great song, great band, & great review! Love the channel man!

Some of the recommendations already suggested on here I 100% agree you may appreciate. Doomsday is really a song you should watch. From the off that song holds so much emotion. The first time I heard that song, I had come back to their new stuff, after a few years away from metal music. I heard the song and instantly felt an emotional connection, I was certain there was a sorrowful story behind it. So not to my surprise I learned the sad news about Tom, so belated as well. I was, sufficed to say, devastated I was not there to be part of the journey in supporting and paying respects to Tom.
I hope I get to see you break down Doomsday, Memento Mori, or an older song "Hollow Crown" one of my personal faves by them.

I'd be really interested in hearing what you think about the band Tallah. They are all super talented musicians that are bringing back/redefining the nu metal genre. Also, their singer Justin has a pretty big youtube channel called Hungry Lights and is pretty involved with the reactor community.

Gone with the wind is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard rom architects! Check it out! Also, another great English metal band is while she sleeps. Check out silence speaks by them featuring oli sykes from being me the horizon!

Everything is planned out in this style of music drum wise and with all instruments. Sometimes live they will play with a drum fill here or there but for the most part every musician stays true to the recording.

Would love you to react to An Ordinary Extinction from Architects. I think you’d find a lot to appreciate in that one!

You NEED to do Snot!! Lynn strait died in a car wreck after only making one album. They would of basically created a new genre if he was still around I feel!

Yeah Dan Searle is a solid drummer. Those foot patterns are called Ruffs. Not too hard, but hard to play clean like that when you end on your opposite.
