Therapist Reacts to Hi Ren by Ren (feat. Melissa Cross)

  • Metal vocal coach, Melissa Cross, and therapist, Taylor Palmby, analyze the lyrics of Hi Ren by Ren to discuss the reality of having an inner voice that is often critical. The song does a powerful job of exposing the truth that we all have many parts within us, some that are more painful to navigate than others. The end of the song concludes that the best way to navigate these parts is to accept and integrate them

Keep dealing with the jealousy pal. You've obviously been living under a rock, in the dark. You've just proven that out of the 7 billion people on the planet, 6.9999 billion are more likely to provide value to other's lives than yourself.
Maybe you need to pay closer attention to Ren's messages and process them better.

@@reubennichols644 i agree completely, for me Ren is special because I got to see his success unfold in real time. Also that we have a shared rare diagnosis. But being able to converse with him in a discord chat, and interact with his friends a lot on social media makes him feel more real and more tangible. And for me finding anyone with my diagnoses is rare, at least finding those with the ability to use social media at all. Usually we're diagnosed in post-mortem not while alive. So yeah, for me Ren is a unicorn and particularly rare to find a musician who you gel with so strongly in your 40s

OMG Yes! THIS! Ren, and by extension his community, have changed me more than any relationship or any therapist (and I've had great psychologists for years). Ren's music is usually my icebreaker in psychology sessions, for if I'm feeling stuck or frozen. Or if I need to tap into an emotion that needs exploring.
After so many years with anhedonia and alexithymia (unable to experience positive emotions and difficulty identifying emotion) Ren’s music has been a gift. I was shut off and shut down.
I'm not saying he's a magic solution, and I use his music alongside therapy. But I also know there's thousands of Renegades who have my back. Not even as an abstract, during a difficult time had direct support and many checking in on me via voice chat and direct message, and the Renegade discord even found a support person IRL to touch base in my remote part of Western Australia. She's now a friend

He manages to capture that inner voice in away that makes it so relatable to every single person on the planet regardless of what walk of life we come from, what status we have in society or where we are born or if we are rich or poor.

  • @DavideBaroni
    @DavideBaroni 2 месяца назад +17

Been a psychologist and therapist myself for the last 25 years, and this one has been my introduction to Ren. It IS incredibly powerful and truthful. 🙂
Yep, you're right, that "dark" part is not an enemy, although it can "act" as one and have the results an enemy would. That's why one of the ways I used to teach my patients to deal with that sort of inner voices has been to "meet" them, acknowledge them, thank them for what they were doing "with a good intention", and then "ask them to let you know what exactly that intention is". And then, to make a long story short, once established what the real purpose was (and yes, "protection" of some kind is quite common), negotiate on the basis of a simple question: "How ELSE could you achieve the result you want?". It's a way to learn to dance in a more reciprocally compatible way, and it's been consistently effective. 🙂
Ren, IMHO, shows here an "integration" phase, and the basis for this is his knowledge of who he is and his standing by his "hope", which to me looks more like a certainty: "I shall overcome", or something like it. And he "dances the dance", which is a beautiful metaphor for this process. In the beginning the two "parts" dance different dances, in the end he learns to dance THE SAME dance, even if in different styles, but the same dance nonetheless. At least, this is what I get from this video. And, even now that I know it by memory, I can't help but crying warm tears especially at the end.
Thank you for your beautiful reaction and breakdown on the psychological level. Really interesting and spot on. Lovely. 🙂
If you want to explore another Ren's piece that is relevant on a psychological level, try "The tale of Jenny and Screech - full". I won't spoiler ANYTHING about it, but it's another masterpiece. 🙂
    See you next time.

I found ren when I was first put in the mental health ward. He understands the pain. it's not just lyrics , it's his pain, and having that to relate to you when you want to die and have a complete stranger use his voice to save you.
I would do anything to meet him
also look at his street music, pure talent

I only heard his story recently - I can't imagine what it was like; being misdiagnosed, medicated for it (I've seen some people say Bipolar, some have said schizophrenia) and then that medication doing even more damage. He was correctly diagnosed after (with Lyme disease), and made a lot of music while in treatment and recovery for the mental and physical damage done to him.
His approach to portraying that light and dark is incredible, he's truly an artistic genius.

Thank you for reacting to anything by Ren. Bisecting or dissecting Ren's brain may be too much of a challenge for normal human beings. Everything Ren does is either fun, sad, outrageous, crazy, deep with meaning, or educational. Ren is an enigma, although not a true enigma according to a "dictionary", since he tells us more about himself and his life than a true enigmatic person would, he isn't mysterious he doesn't hide anything. But he surprises most of us with his diversity.

I never heard of Ren before the last two weeks. I listen to hi Ren and for joe everyday. Hi Ren really does resonate with some of my own experiences in life. “The voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope” people who have been there have heard this voice and the relief it brings when in that moment, you realise life has found a way. For Joe is a near a mirror of a loss in my own life when I was 15. It hit me so intensely I’d lost a huge chunk of what it means to care for others. Not only is this man a lyrical genius, he is the man who is saving other men trapped in a similar cycle. Forget your alphas who claim to want to raise other men up. Ren gets it. He’s lived the struggle. He won’t retire he’ll stand in fire inspire the weak to be strong and he’s doing it.

Ren also said in an interview that some people thought he had "defeated his evil side" by the end of this song--but his intention was to show exactly what you said, that he learned to accept his "dark" side. learn from it, derive creativity from it, etc. Sort of like Carl Jung's "shadow." Excellent reaction, analysis and commentary! Ren has been a great source of inspiration--and yes, therapy--for me and so many other people around the world. 🤠

It's fully possible to learn to love yourself. There are practices for self-compassion and they're for real. The way I see it is that we create our thoughts. So you've been creating a lot of dark ones, probably very good at it, a master even if it's going on for so long. Starting at the other end, to me, makes sense. Practice being kind to yourself. Also respect that you're a black belt self-hater, sparring against that is going to take time. What really got through to me tho is the realization of that I am the one in control. Sure, I might go on autopilot, but I can take the wheel.
If it makes sense at all, awesome, it was a good reminder for myself. Balance to you friend, reaching out to the void is still doing something.

When I look at this live performance, I see it as the intro and start of creativity up thru the yodel. It is then interrupted by doubt, and the proverbial curtains part, and we witness the internal conversation between the 2 sides. it culminates in doubt declaring it's existence is in everyone and is everywhere and an individual is helpless to prevent that. Then hope steps up and helps return Ren to be distant and still, and states his ever persistence and presence as well. "We are coin of two different sides." The creativity is then allowed to continue (back to the yodels). This time, however, both sides are present, as indicated by the set lights flashing (they were not in the first yodel). The poem at the end is part of the performance in every version I've heard of it.
What I get most from that poem is the first line: "When I was 17 years old, I shouted out into an empty room, into a blank canvas, that I would defeat the forces of evil." I feel this shows how we do not start with the life experiences to understand the implications of creating balance within ourselves. We have naive expectations of black and white, good and bad, positive and negative. Meanwhile, we miss the importance of recognizing grayness. "We must not forget, that we are human beings."
My final thoughts are that navigating through life is a balancing act of that coin of 2 different sides. The expectation of either extreme (such as total salvation or absolute corruption) are deceptive, in that there will be internal struggles in everyone's lives at some point in time. Growth, development, and teachings are tools to give the individual to create that balance, allowing movement forward, rather than any other direction.

Listen to "Sick Boi" (disillusionment with the medical profession, and ultimately the broader status quo) - or, "Chalk Outlines" (the emotionally numbing effect of anti-depressants). Then there's "For Joe" (about the s**c*de of his close friend), or you might also be intrigued by, "How to be Me". Enjoy the ride - aside from the wonderful music, Ren's a therapists dream come true!

I very much had this problem, not that it doesn't still become a problem from time to time. I was ruled by that other voice. I viewed it as evil and 😢 just to hurt me 24 hours a day. I was on medication for depression and anxiety, which not only didn't help, but made me feel way worse. I was on them for a few years, and then I threw them in the trash. Quit cold turkey. I didn't understand what that would do to my mind. Everything went haywire, and my mind was shattered like a mirror. For two months after that I was picking up each small piece of that mirror, and analyzing every bit while putting myself back together. I learned that other voice wasn't the evil I thought it was. It was more like toxic tough love. I even learned to listen to it without judgment, and found out it was bringing up good points. Just in the most toxic ways. Like this song says, I learned to dance with it. To listen to what it's saying without taking offense to how it was said, and look for the meaning behind the mean thoughts. I even talked to it like a person, understanding that it wasn't but it's a different part of my mind. It's less toxic now. It's like I came to an understanding with myself. I will listen and emphasize to it more if it will be more constructive with less personal attacks that aren't helpful. It's hard to put into words. It's still pretty toxic, but toned down. Cultivate the light but don't ignore the dark. It wasn't until after that happened that I discovered that shadow work is a thing. I even thought this was a modern thing created by people like Jung. Then I found out that this is actually something that has been taught a lot longer than recorded history, and is extremely important to the human mind and spirit, and has been since humans became capable of complex thoughts and emotions.

Those big pharma (poisons) yep, in my opinion it is. You have to slowly wean off them. That was hard as well, it had side effects for 6 months and that was with slow weaning. Big pharma punishes you for trying to leave them. Changing my diet to only meat, eggs, some veggies and water changed my life. My mental health lifted, I lost weight, no more pain and off every drug. Processed foods with the seed oils, vast chemicals, sugars, corn syrup are basically a slow poison for the body. Refined carbs are not to great either, the body turns them to sugar. Anyways, I could not imagine going cold turkey even low dosages. Which people rarely are. Glad you made it through.
