nondancer here and I loved this show. It fulfilled my secret dance dreams and okay...I lived for the drama. Plus it was in general a great coming of age show...I really enjoyed seeing how the characters matured over the seasons, how they learned to find where they 'fit' in the dance world, how they learned to cope with disappointments and setbacks, how they learned to make their voice heard against people trying to tell them who/what they should be.
Another non-dancer, and you said exactly what I came here to say!!
Now I need to go and rewatch this show. ❤
Yep
as someone who did dance for years, this show made me wanna dance when I was 12, and I absolutely lovedddd it. It might have not been 100% accurate with dance, but with mental health, and real life situations, it kept it so real and I loved that.
agree!!
Same, I have such a deep and abiding love for this show. If I’d seen it when younger it would have made me want to dance. I loved seeing all the characters grow.
Former dancer - absolutely love this show. Have rewatched several times. And yes, they actually cast people who were dancers and it shows. Please please Josephine watch the whole series, it’s so much more than these dramatic moments.
Couldn't agree more hahaha I watched this show like 17 times hahaha I love it ❤
It is true some was there really dancers. I think who played abigail,Tara or Oliver for example.
I feel like Josephine must watch this show entirely, watching scenes or episodes randomly doesn’t do it justice, this is a really good show, it might look really dramatic but at the end it has really good messages, doesn’t matter if you are a dancer or not
Yes please!
...but, having "good messages" doesn't make it a good show. I understand if you say that it's entertaining and enjoyable to watch, but it's clearly extremely cringey, not very well acted and has unrealistic overdramatised storylines - so I can fully believe that it's entertaining, but clearly not a "good show".
@@Czadzikable honestly the movie is so good it's worth watching the whole show to have the whole backstory
I really enjoyed this show because the actors actually dance and are quite talented. Highly recommend.
I watched the entire show from start to finish. Multiple Multiple times. I, myself, am a dancer and dance educator who understands the emotions and the drama.
Non ballet dancer (used to clog) and I loved this show particularly Abigails story because I identified with her since she had a Slightly bigger body type than the other characters and I was told as a a young child I was too big to learn ballet .the drama never really felt particularly unrealistic especially compared to other shows airing around this time .
I thought clog was dancing. Is it not, please?
@@eliseives9574 Clogging is dancing. It just is not ballet. OP wrote non ballet dancer, I also read it as non dancer at first. 😅
Someone that used to dance, I've watched this and for some reason I got emotionally invested with the characters especially Sammy.
I enjoyed the series and the movie
Ooooh! Sammy! Endless tears!!!
I’m a dancer, or was, and I loved Dance Academy! I was quite a bit younger when I watched it though. It still has one of the most shocking and upsetting deaths of any tv programme I’ve ever seen.
I sobbed, like literally sobbed, never have I cried so dramatically over any show ever
@@riv05060 Same here!
I cry every time I get to that episode even though I’ve rewatched it so many times
@@amethystgacha4697 It is SO upsetting!
It was so unbelievably tragic. Cried my eyes out again and again. That Red Shoes scene is everything. I thought the movie pulled everything together. I also loved Bun Heads and watch both shows multiple times. It's probably time to rewatch Dance Academy!
Former dancer that watched this show as a grown adult…and loved it!!! You have to watch it from the beginning! I loved that the main characters weren’t the typical ballet body aesthetic, and that they were all talented dancers. Watching these clips I could hear the opening music in my head and it gave me the warm and fuzzies all over again 😊
It is a Story based on a Real dancer, and her aunt made a tv series out of it!!!🎉
🙋🏾♀️non-dancer. I binge watched this ~3½ years ago. After a few episodes I got drawn in and invested in the actors/dancers. Literally cried towards the end over something that happened.
Samy 😭
I've been an on and off dancer for about 12 years, and when I watched this show I was not dancing and it made me miss dance SO MUCH but also some of the plot points and the dancing are sooo good, I still love this whole show
I’m not a dancer, but I did gymnastics and theater and I loved this show. It made me want to do ballet so bad!!
I‘m a non-dancer but I’m rhythmic gymnast and we have ballet training in our practice. Personally I really love the ballet element and that is so heavily focused on that, because I HATED doing ballet in our practice but because of Dance Academy , I kind of grew to like it
Dancer - Dance Academy was the last straw that got me into ballet training over a decade ago. I was always dancing along to the episodes with makeshift barre excercises and stretches etc. I was obsessed with this show and I've watched all seasons multiple times, although it's often hard to know what awaits you in season 2 and beyond.
I think the show is amazing, well written and one of the best ballet shows out there.
Former dancer. I binged this series and loved it. Some events in later episodes seriously broke my heart.
Dancer here who watched the show. It’s so good! So much drama but I love for it and the dancing really is spot on. It has so many good storylines also. You should give more a watch. Season 2 has so many crazy moments!
I’m an old ex dancer and I absolutely love this show. Watched whole series twice. One of the best dance shows I have watched. Yes they all do their own dancing. Very talented cast.
“Grace, you’re whack.” Is for some reason the funniest thing I’ve ever heard
I'm not a dancer and I watched this when it firtst aired in Germany (~2010 onward), when I was about 12-15. And I loved it. My sister and I were obsessed.
Listen, I’m 25 and I started ballet a few months ago because of this show, I loved it
Love your comment
Non dancer and absolutely love this show. I’ve watched it so many times through! Fills all dreams I’ve had for dancing ❤
Former Dancer/ Dance Major... I love Dance Academy , 10/10 recommend. I even check a bucket list item on my honeymoon and visited where some of these scenes were shot in Australia.❤
A lot more flies than I was let to believe though.
I love this show! and the movie was even better! a really satisfying follow up
I always watched the show before I went to dance. It was so good and the movie is also great. All the actors are dancers there’s a bunch of bts footage of them rehearsing
was then nondancer, now dancer, but i watched this show in middle school and it sparked my obsession with ballet, it was so inspirational to me at the time. might need to do a rewatch.
❤ this! More Dance Academy please!!!!
I used to dance some 30 years ago. I watched the whole series and found it very realistic. They are all dancers, as far as I know. They all dance. I just loved it!
This show made me sign up for dance many years ago! Recently started dancing again
I love these Australian shows. As a horse girl I loved The Saddle Club. It’s was silly and amazing.
Former dancer - Loved this show and have watched and re-watched it.
The cast is made up of dancers. Not all of them ballet dancers, but all dancers.
Yes, my dance studio was this nasty and competitive.
Non dancer here, i was OBSESSED with watching this show when I was in college
It hit all the right points for being a "dumb little show about teenage drama" but with dancing, so it got my attention.
As a non-dancer, with terrible coordination and absolutely zero knowledge about ballet, I still don't know why I watch so much ballet content but I love it 🧡
(P.S. if anyone knows, is height an advantage or disadvantage for ballet?)
Disadvantage 😢 depending on how tall you are. But if you are “tall” like, people would call you tall. Then, that’s definitely a disadvantage because most ballet dancers are not very tall and they are all supposed to be similar height. There are a few tall companies though I think.
Disadvantage. Unless you are between 5'4" and 5'6" then you are either too tall or too short.
Ah... so above 6ft means ballet is likely not in my future 😅 Good to know, thank you@@SimpleDesertRose
@@TheWild0ne there are a few tall companies out there but I don't know if they have a height limit. However don't let it stop you from dancing if you truly wish to dance. Paula Abdul was considered too short to be a professional dancer. Look at her now. She's something of a legend.
@@TheWild0ne I'd say maybe you shouldn't take this information so much at heart. I am an adult, disabled, pre-op transmasculine person and with all of that going pretty much against me, I still decided to give ballet a try. And I'm already thinking about making myself professional in some way (perhaps not an athlete, perhaps not a pro dancer, but there are so many things to be done, it is a big world).
What matters is : do you want to try it, do you enjoy doing it ?
Also, if this is not your professionnal career... well, as I've been told and I'm still trying to learn it : you don't have to be good at your hobbies, you have to enjoy them.
Love on you all.
Non dander and saw it once on RUclips and then continued watching. Was hooked. Then rewatched later!!! It’s worth a watch!
Former dancer, loved this show. Several in this cast are also in a show called Camp that ran for 1 season and I loved it so much I ended up finding that.
I have lost count of how many times ive rewatched this show. I might just have to do it again after this video
I'm a non-dancer, but both my children danced through high school. I started watching DA for the ballet but couldn't make it through the first season due to too much drama and not enough dancing. I love your TikTok reaction videos too, Josephine!! During Nutcracker season, as my kids danced different parts, my husband and I were "party parents" and it was a lot of fun. But...gave me a much greater appreciation of what goes on behind the scenes of a performance!
Danced up to when I would have been on point. Loved the show. The clips you are shown include most of the most dramatic parts. I really appreciated they got real dancers for it and included real things, not just ballet drama like this clip.
Dancer- loved this tv series. It made me laugh and cry.
I watched the show and loved it!😀
Non-dancer who loved this show and the movie. Some of hte characters end up having some really wonderful growth arcs, especially Abigail
I’ve never danced but I lovvvved this show so much when it came out.
nondancer and i was addicted and binged this when i found it! i appreciated the acting and the dancing being real too.
i think it's funny how there doesn't seem to be a very strict dress code. Yes, they all have their hair up, but they're wearing like any color leotard/skirt that they want. in my experience, you have a specific leo color that you have to wear for classes, and you sometimes have to wear black for rehearsal, but if not, you can wear any color that you want.
They have colored leotards based on their year during class sessions and rehearsals. In these clips they're preparing for a competition outside of class time, so they're dressed loosely based on their solos
Current dancer, love this show!! It was very well made and well written
Not a dancer - I looooved this show and I was so invested in the drama haha. I always wanted to be a ballet dancer so I loved all type of content with ballet in it, this show got me hooked so much
Non dancer here and omg did I love this show and the spin-off movie!
I have watched a few of your vids and was trying to figire out who you reminded me of and it came to me afyer watching Prode and Prejudice. You have the same smile as Keira Knightly, who I love.
I'm a non-dancer who watched as a teen and I looooved ballet, couldn't do it because of the cost, so while I was outside of the dance world as a dancer I was intensely involved as a spectator. basically this show taught me ballet (along with bingeing ballet videos on youtube). I'm in an adult ballet class now though and learning the ropes from the inside, it's a dream come true!
Mature adult non-dancer and I've watched the entire series twice while it was available to stream in Canada in its entirety, plus the movie. Sometimes I'm a sucker for teen drama and I chose horseback riding instead of ballet when I was young, so this gives me a bit of a fix for missing out...
Nondancer here (always wanted to be a dancer though) and I watched this show, I loved it haha
Hi I love these kinds of videos ❤
I did a year of ballet when I was a kid, but I really didn't know much of anything about dance. I used to watch the show and I loved it so much!! I've always been really into dance, so it was really enjoyable. I didn't know all the dance lingo, but they explained it pretty well in the show.
Non dancer and I loved watching the show! ❤
Great show! Watch the whole thing! :) Wonderful emotive deep characters and multi dimensional writing that hits highs and lows of both dance and non dance life experience. :)
i was obsessed with this show. When I rewatched as a new adult I even debated starting adult ballet lessons, after having stopped my simple once a week classes when I was 11. The beginner class I went to, however, was definitely not beginner friendly (they told me I had a LOT of work to catch up on, even with my 7 years of dancing as a child and general knowledge of dance terms). I then decided to go do Irish dance instead and now also do kpop dancing, but still love Dance Academy with my whole heart
I am a dancer and I looooove this show! I rewatch it for comfort often ❤ it’s like all TV - meant to have drama and be a bit bombastic but I think it’s cool that ballet is the subject 🩰
Gurl you are so pretty fr
Watch all of it! Make it a series!
I have been dancing since I was 3and a half and I will get pointe shoe fitted next year!😊
I’m not a dancer, at all, but I really love this show! You should react to the episode where Tara broke her back. Ever since I watched that part, when I was younger, I’ve been too afraid to even move in a weird way, because I’ll hear that pop from when she broke her back. That still traumatizes me, to this day. Plus, my family has a history of breaking their back and not knowing it. Lol
That was brutal!
I love Dance Academy! Watch the movie....I think you'll enjoy it more.
Please make this a series!!!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
this is my comfort show. i watch it over and over! ETA: just a casual dancer--not in the dance world but have taken a few classes
Non dancer that watches the show. It's very pre teen drama but I love dance and dance shows.
Non dancer here, watched the whole show and loved it! Season two was a rough one for abigail but it was pivotal in her becoming one of my favorite if not my favorite dancer on the show.
I'm a not dancer who watched the show, there's some really cool scenes, the teen drama just need to be ignored.
I often think about the first episode (I think) when they discuss natural talent and people who puts work in dance, there are some good reflections.
Yeah, even though I’m actually obsessed with this show there are quite a few bits I did find a tad cringy, particularly in s1 as they are all quite young. S2 and s3 do get more serious, though
I’m a non dancer male but loved the show to pieces as well my best friend which i also got hooked on the show
Recently i even have rewatched the entire series just for comfort and to sob about a certain character storyline ending abruptly in season 2
Loved it! Nondancer but i did have some shoes that made me want to try tap as a kid lol
As a dancer I loved this show and the drama! Reminds me of my HS! 😂😂😂
the competitive drama from shows like this always held me back from joining any team of anything. I had some sports people in my class and they were always stressed because of an injury, a competition or bs drama like this. So irl observations and shows like this really turned me off, even when I wanted to try alot of stuff.
I was a non-dancer who became a dancer (been dancing for 5.5 years and en pointe for 2.5).. I loved and still love the show. It’s got a variety of characters with different struggles and types of relationships. And the cast is amazing! They are such very good dancers, I think! I would definitely give it a try!
Non-dancer who has never ever ever had any chance to be into ballet. I remember this show was one of the number of Australian series that came to the Sunday after-lunch slot at that time, that I watched when visiting my mom. (A career dream of whom when a little child was being a ballerina or ice cream vendor.) It was my "introduction" into the ballet world and I enjoyed the show very much. Without it I do not think I would watch any ballet youtube channels now.
Im a non dancer and watch this show and i absolutely love it icl it lit my passion for dance and im gonna take ballet classes at 26☺️
I'm a non-dancer. My only ballet experience was at 5 years old but I got the chicken pox and I wasn't able to be in the recital. I've seen Dance Academy all the way through a couple of times and the movie. I enjoy it. I like getting a glimpse into the ballet world. I like how we got to see how students from different walks coped.
I’m a non dancer and watched this series a couple times. I enjoyed the dancing
Non dancer here and I loved the show. Later it will rip your heart out. Sometimes the drama was too much, but I still really loved it. Keep with it. There’s a movie as well!
So - I'm not a dancer, and back, when I was a teenager I LOVED this series!
im a non-dancer and i loved this show so much!!
nondancer, love this show - though I did dance ballet when I was younger and am in love with everything about it
Ah! I love this show! Made me so sad though
Former dancer but not ballet, I loved that show when I was younger! I’ve been on dance teams where there was a lot of catty-ness and bullying but not to that extreme of sabotage.
dancer love this show😍
I'm not a dancer and this show is so dramatic! I loved it
Non dancer but I loved this show! I’ve watched it like 3 times and the movie too!
Non dancer, but I am a classical musician. And while I loved the first 2 seasons of this show, it’s as blown out of proportion as classical music movies are 😂
Nondancer- watched this show in my childhood and i was always so faszinated of ballet, its so pretty! (parents couldn't afford ballet lessons)
Later I rewatched the series and i just love the drama and ballet, there is a movie after the three seasons!
Non-dancer here…I loved this show! I binged watched the series and the movie after the series was amazing…and quite tearful…😊
You should check out the dance scenes in the movie they released after the series ended, they're very pretty
Non-dancer, loved this show. Always intense but the dancing was great
No Justine!! You have to watch the entire thing!! You're missing everything that made this show great!!!! 😭You really have to sit and watch the entire show, I'm SO interested in your reaction!!
This pushed me to start dancing again at 15! I absolutely loved it and it is still my comfort show even though I’m 27 now! 😅🙈 and as others have said: if you overlook the silly teen drama (especially season 1 with a lot of cringey scenes), you’ll get a quality teen Drama show, with beautiful dancing and excellent storylines (death, queerness, mental problems etc.). It deals with a lot of important topics and does that in a way that is so touching, heartwrenching might I say, but so understandable for the intended audience. Really have a watch through it 😍🥰
Non dancer from the generation of Center Stage. Even though I was fully in my 20s when Dance Academy hit my streaming service, I was obsessed. I was in ballet and gymnastics at 4 and then we hit hard times and had no money for lessons and classes. Even though there's lots of drama in the show, I was very interested in the character development and storylines. I laughed, I got unreasonably angry, I greived... All for fictional characters. You should hear how emotional I get over book series.
non dancer here but i have ballerina dreams i just always wanted to be one a dancer in general bit i loved this show and you should definitely watch the whole thing not just parts of it
I love the show, I’m still watching it (currently for 4th or 5th time I guess) to keep myself motivated when I’m tired before class or my muscles hurts really bad. I actually kind of started Ballet because of dance academy. And the story is quite accurate to the real ballet world really often. Sure there it’s a looott of drama and love in it (it needs to stay interesting for non dancers (and dancers) as well 😉) but they show blisters and injures, they talk about pain and exhaustion, different types of eating disorders and the pressure. And I really love to see them dance (yes btw, the actors are all real dancers). I did not really liked season one, I always felt like it’s so overacted (and there it was sometimes unrealistic), but season two and three were actually good 😊
Danceer!!! And i loved dance academy.
I loved watching the marathons on teen nick. I tried ballet as a kid and didn’t like it that much but I loved the drama on this show as a non dancer.
definite non dancer who watched the entire series! It's like a elevated teen drama. so worth it
Non dancer and I also loved this show. Plus I just realized that the actor playing Grace went on to play Clary in Shadow Hunters!
Not the same actress at all. Kat McNamara played Clary, Isabel Durant played Grace.
@@ReadingOne Thanks for letting me know. Their faces are very similar!
I don’t know if you would consider me a non dancer. I never danced pointe but I was in a ton of other dance classes. But I love this show and all it’s drama. I can’t wait till you get to the end of this season it’s so dramatic and then there is a movie after the end of the show to wrap everything up!
