- It was Super Bowl Sunday night and the big game festivities had finished an hour or so earlier. A busy bar in Key West, Florida, Conch Town Liquor and Lounge, was serving the crowd of hangers-on and those who didn’t have to be somewhere early the next morning. A group of three young men get up from their drinks and head out the back door leading to the parking lot behind the bar. A middle-aged man, an owner of this strip mall, gets up and follows them. Minutes later, as things moved into the earliest hours of Monday, there were shouts from behind the building, a shot was fired, followed by two more in quick succession. One young man’s life would pour out into that parking lot and another man’s life would be forever changed.
What happened and why? Let’s look together into the shooting of Garrett Hughes on that fateful night.

Hell no. This is straight up murder. You can't escalate the situation and claim self defense..
You can if you're white and the victim is black.
Police do it all the time, they just call it “resisting”. You stand there eating icecream, they sweep in howling “stop resisting”. WHen you go “huh?!” Its clearly resisting so all bets are off from there …
Poor guy was murdered for pissing in a parking lot!!! That could've happened to me or any guy I hung out with in my 20's. RIP, Garrett! So incredibly senseless. I hope justice is served.
Me too my friend 👊
Me too buddy. Scary thought.
& Mr murder trying to make it look like he's never done it himself! He's a smug pompous entitled coward & liar! It's sneaks like this that make me wonder if they've done it b4 & didn't get caught! There's no way that he kept an urge to murder under wraps for 40 plus yrs! That kid didn't even get the chance to start his life & he sounds like he was an amazing young man.
yes, considering he could've gotten uromysitisis poisoning 😆
Wait til u r a senior and have to wee wee every 30’…can’t be far from a bathroom or woods.
The fact he drew his gun before even talking to the young man should be a red flag that this was murder, not self defense. At that point he had no reason to fear for his life, and walking up on someone with a drawn firearm is a great way to escalate the situation. What a moron, hope he rots in prison.
He deserves to spend rest of his days inside the rock
He wanted to shoot someone and that was his chance to justify it
@@pale_saint Definitely but if a lawyer got Kasey Anthony found Not Guilty, anything is possible. Hopefully he does, he pulled a gun on a kid pissing with his back turned; he was out to kill that night.

I bet he's the guy at the bar who tells EVERYONE that he's the owner, an entitled, self righteous a-hole. RIP Garrett, justice will be served.

I love when people get caught on their OWN cameras.
Right? Doesn't he realize his own cameras filmed everything?

@@prototype8137 are you unable to see things from any other perspective besides emotional? I don’t think this person was implying this wasn’t a tragedy, clearly it is and OP isn’t pro murder here.
yes we love it. although it meant a young mans live was ended.... what is the obsession of Americans and their right to 'bare' arms.
He cornered a drunken kid who didn’t know what was going on and murdered him. It’s disgusting. No reaction when told the kid was dead. This man has been thinking of taking a life and trying to use stand your ground for a long time. That was cold blooded murder
That's jumping to extremely unreasonable conclusions
Sold him alcohol then shot him.
What this guy did was horrible.. BUT how the hell can you make those claims as facts? Did he tell you this personally? Did he speak those words to someone you know? People need to stop making assumptions and stating them as fact. It’s such a huge problem in the world today.
First 2 sentences were fine. Then your inferences went nuts.
I don't care what the other replies say- this is possible. Not saying I necessarily believe the motive for this scenario, but there are plenty of psycho gun nut cop worshippers who do get guns and live in states with stand your ground laws because they love getting their rocks off to the power fantasy of murdering someone and being the "good guy". Just look at George Zimmerman and that whole case, which was the exact motive and the exact same state. This guy got right up in this kid's face to escalate this because he knew he could be the hero. Any responsible gun owner watches someone walking away and knows not to escalate. This guy even said he knew the kid was unnarmed.
When the Jury watches the CCTV footage, his life is over without a doubt. He drew the gun even before he confronted the victim verbally, and he was the first one phsyically assault the victim, and he shot him at point-blank range, which completely destroys all his lies.
Put him away 100% in my opinion . Firearms are for protection, not because your a little man . This man is 100% part of the problem. Such a tragedy
Mhm. Seems like it's always the people who should never have access to firearms who always carry them. Itching to pull the trigger for the slightest thing.
*you're, but yeah. Complete agreement.
If only there were a reasonable solution to this problem... But clearly there isn't, otherwise something would have been done, right?
I'm sorry, but Americans are the last people on Earth to have guns.
@@dawnbreaker2912 nope, it's people like him that you find out they're carrying because they're a moron. 99% of us that carry have never pulled it out on someone, because it has never been ACTUALLY neccessary

Agreed, but if what he was describing actually happened then it would be a different story.
but it didnt so thats an irrelevant point to make, this was murder - he had all means to step back and diffuse the situation but instead he pulled the trigger and made 3 shots, no use talking about the what ifs.
Nope. He was just thumping his chest. What a jerk.

this is one of my favorite kinds of interogations. watching horrible arrogant people get humbled and put away. on another note, I really like that you acknowledge the victim and their families. it's so important to remember there are real people with real lives and loved ones lost here.
Yeah, like that scumbag Michael Dunn.
Let's keep it 100....
This little old weasel wouldn't have been puffing up & starting fights without a firearm on him.
His intent was obvious.
Everyone I know that carries would never put themselves in that position. Also, how TF is it ok to be intoxicated with a firearm, a literal DEADLY weapon. Yet driving a vehicle is illegal? Obviously driving intoxicated should be illegal but being intoxicated &thinking you're tough is absolutely insane.
If you carry a firearm, you need to live a life of de-escalation, diffusion, and verbal judo to avoid conflict. Be a good, sane, sober, moral, and prudent person. You are responsible for every round that leaves that barrel, and you better be damn sure you can prove to a jury of peers that you had a reasonable belief that you were in mortal danger. Not seeing that here.

100 per. Cover your ASP guys. He wanted trouble and felt confident because of his firearm. That is the complete opposite approach he should have. Legally though, he might get away with murder. Morally, that's bankrupt behavior. He has to own up to it one day. 🙏
The owner of the bar was intoxicated and was upset that a half dressed unarmed young man was peeing on *someone else's wall* and thought he was reaching for something so he walked right up to him and shot him at point blank range..... I think his stand your ground rule just flew out the window. Lock him him up, that was outright murder and he needs at least 25yrs
You're wrong, should be life or capital punishment
Garrett Hughes had the misfortune of being in the same place and time as the trigger-happy owner of a small strip mall. This young man was murdered for the simple act of urinating on an outside wall. This story is so very sad - I am on the side of the victim.
He wasn’t killed because he urinated on a wall, he was killed because the guy that owned the property was a self entitled , trigger happy, narcissistic little man. He would of shot him if he spit on the ground
I guess being drunk and disorderly, pissing in public and mouthing off to the wrong dude is a bad thing! Who would have imagined!
RIP young man.
Big ego wielding a gun because he 'owns' the town and believes he has the law in his back pocket. It's very clear in the video, Hughes is very drunk and I'd wager has no idea what's going on except that he's gotta 'go'. Brewer is a prick, imo, and thinks he's the victim. He didn't react verbally or otherwise (that we could see) to the news that Hughes had died. To me that indicates zero remorse.
if he wanted to mag dump civilians with qualified immunity, he should have joined the PD.
This is a man that thought he was entitled bc he owned a strip mall....then was handling a firearm while intoxicated. He happened to "stumble" upon someone that may have should been put in jail for a Public Intoxication charge for peeing on a building (that wasn't the assailant's) when the assailant got upset bc he was also intoxicated. Noone should have been killed in this situation. The man that thought he was above the law....whom shot the innocent young man...should def be put away. He shouldn't be trusted with a firearm or to even own a business where public is involved if he cannot control himself. He's definitely a threat to the community as he has shown.
“If you’re going to arrest me, I need to…” 😂😂 had me dying. That’s going to be the least of your worries, bro.
Yeah can you just give me a few days so I can do some paperwork first…you can sit there with me all day if you want….🤣🤣🤣🤣
The epitome of privilege. Imagine believing you have control over when you get arrested once there’s a warrant. Smh
I have lived in Florida most of my life and used to go to Key West at minimum once a year. It is a party town and if everyone that urinated in public were shot and killed the body count would be off the charts on a daily basis! Sounds to me like this jerk was just looking for a reason to shoot someone which is sickening and I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison! I believe in stand your ground but this is definitely NOT a stand your ground case!
"Give me 3 or 4 days"😂😂😂 what? Did he give the victim 3 or 4 days to say goodbye to his family???
Thought he was special
It has just occurred to me that after years of watching true crime, RUclips channels and podcasts, This is one of the first times I have ever heard the channel send their condolences to the family that lost someone. Hits home just how horrible murder is.
this channel always does that
Yes, I meant to point that out, too. The only one that first acknowledges the victim and his family, as it should be. If you are making your own videos about crime, it should be this, as an educational tool as to what to do, and what not to do, and these are people's lives that you are basing your youtube channel on, so it should be with the utmost respect to the victims, their families, and friends. Well done.

He's been waiting for an opportunity like this. Even if you're in a situation where you have no option but to use deadly force against another human, you're going to feel regret and your first thoughts and questions are going to be about the person's welfare. I didn't see any of that from this shooter. What I saw was deadly retribution against someone who dared to disrespect his property.
It wasn't even the killer's property. It belonged to a neighboring business
The neighboring building did belong to someone else. But I'm sure he saw it as *his* parking lot.
When I put my pistol belt on each morning, I say a prayer that I have no need to use it. Seems like this guy was just waiting for so,body to argue with him. He makes legal gun owners look bad and belongs in jail.

Saw this interrogation a week ago. So glad you guys covered it. This is a person who was looking for a reason to use his gun on someone. He is a blatant murder who thinks he can beat the system which is why he instantly brought up a grand jury.
...because he's "so well known" in the community he couldn't possibly be found guilty.
I think so too.
His girlfriend or wife idk left him and he wanted a reason to make himself look like a hero for doing something.
Glad it's mostly cut and dry and it's obvious he killed a fucking kid because he's got a tiny pecker.
Yep! Precisely!
EVEN THE GRAND JURY WILL SEE HE WAS WRONG AND GOING TO PRISON I HOPE HE TRIES TO STAND HIS GROUND IN PRISON SO REAL MEN CAN SHOW HIM HOW THEY TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS LMAO!!
hopefully he is comvicted because lately its giving these nuts bravado to do this
Doesn't matter if Hughes was unarmed, armed, drunk, or not drunk. What matters is if the person had a perceived reasonable threat of grave bodily harm to himself or someone else. I don't see that here at all, you can't reasonably think you're in danger if you're the one to advance on the person you shoot, which was a good distance away, that's more similar to an execution than self defense.
And, he actually turned his back on the two friends, clearly not expecting any threat from them at all. Who, in danger, would do that? Not a sign of any fear or even nervousness --- I bet he pissed against an outside wall many a time. This was deliberate murder,-- maybe he thought he would wound this kid, teach him a painful lesson, and swagger back to the bar? Probably down to 2nd, or manslaughter for a plea deal? And, he knew exactly what to do when calling cops -- put gun safely out of reach? Even with the two friends still there? Yeah, he's so in danger? Not a shred of a reason, let alone excuse.
Agreed. I've walked away from so much crap when I'm armed.
When I'm disarmed? I'm actually kind of nasty.
If the guy with the Flag and Eagle avatar thinks you're gun-happy then you truly are fucked! 😆
Guilty of murder. He lunged at him, he held the weapon, he was in a position of control not of being threatened. What a waste of that young mans life, who seemed to offer so much!
this is exactly what some cops do then claim reaching for a weapon

As a CCW holder, this man is the epitome of someone who should not be allowed to get a carry permit. 1) He's a hot head, 2) drinking and firearms never go together, and 3) he was using the gun for intimidation and went looking for a reason to use it. He sees a drunk guy taking a leak, so his first instinct is to draw his gun?!? Give me a BREAK!! The guy owns a bar too, which makes it even worse because he KNOWS how drunk people can act. The Irony of this story, is that he asked for a Grand Jury, which he got… and they recommended a first degree murder charge. It was initially a second degree murder charge.
Here's my take on why Brewer got all "tough guy" and ticked off. He admitted that he stayed behind at the bar after his niece left because he was hoping to pick up a woman. He probably had zero luck at that, but he noticed that the good looking and young Garrett Hughes was catching a lot of the women's attention. Brewer couldn't compete with that but he thought he was a better man than Garrett and he was jealous. The more he drank, the madder he got. He was looking to pick a fight ... that's why he went out to the parking lot ... hoping to push his weight around as the owner of the strip mall. Petty man with a fat ego and petty jealousy ... now a murderer.

He murdered Garrett Hughes and therefore should sit in jail for the rest of his life.

The fact that he lost his life for urinating on a wall, urinating on a wall, not breaking people's property, or harming another person, but pissing on a wall, is unnecessary and unforgivable! I did worse things at that age and thank god I'm still here! Rip Garrett!
This is absolutely terrible. Garrett was murdered for emptying his bladder in a parking lot. Unfortunately these things occur when a coward carries a gun. I hope his family gets the justice they deserve. RIP Garrett ❤
He wasn't even in this pos guy property. He is evil pure
At least exist justice in us. Here in Brazil just black and poor people go to prison and stay little time in jail if the murder someone.
100% correct! Well said
@@alexandrerj2036 Ok, so like... America is only a few steps away from Brazil.
The Difference between Brazil and America, is that you can murder someone in brazil and spend time in jail. In America, you can murder someone. Post bail, hire lawyers, write a book, start a go-fund-me, get a reality tv show. Or just be lucky that the legal system is so backed up that you're put on house arrest for two-years post-bail and your entire trial ends up being thrown out at the last moment, so like... You're innocent, legally. Your life is still RUINED though.
Also money is king in the US.
There are plenty of American Celebrities who have gotten away from murder. Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner & Matthew Broderick, are too great examples.
Definitely not a man
Lock him up for life. What he did is unforgivable!
What's unforgivable? Pissing on private property?

This is horrifying. After watching the footage. It is obvious that Garrett was NOT the aggressor. I am so sorry for his Family, Friends and Community. They lost a very special giving young man who was just having some fun. The owner was looking to puff up and flex his muscles. Shame on him. Disgusting.
Dude has his gun drawn before dudes back was even turned. What a coward. I carry a knife at all times and have had to pull it out on people, but only when my life, body, were being threatened. Never when the person isn't even looking at me. Stand your ground is not a excuse, these people are cowards and murderers and this is only proof that trayvon was murdered.

@@Joseph-fw6xx "Kid"? Garrett was a tall, fit, 21yr old adult.

His charge has since been upgraded to 1st degree murder.
What a pathetic Little “man”. May all the loved ones left behind find peace. So sorry this happened.

I am a firearms instructor, executive protection agent for billionaires and have been a CCW holder for over a decade. We are taught that the only time you use your weapon is in the event of grave bodily injury or imminent death. And that there are no methods of escape. I.E. cornered in a wall.

Well, the poor guy was unarmed and totally hammered. What much of a danger could he realistically be?
Cameras are bringing to the Light what was once in the Dark. We are all better off for it too.
@@aocroissierwhat much? Of course we all know alcohol never creates aggressive situations. Any drunk is always innocent and incapable of being a bad guy.
In this case it’s the bar owner however your comment is asinine.
@@iamthebroker the point is, he's unarmed, he's not acting aggressive, and he's so hammered that even if he tried to swing at the other guy, he would likely completely miss and lose his balance. He's not a threat to the guy. While I agree that drunk people are often very dangerous, especially when they're armed and angry or behind the wheel of a car, I will reiterate my point above, this guy is hammered and not dangerous at all. There are certain levels of intoxication that result in someone becoming weak and vulnerable. The guy in the video is one such instance. The guy with the gun is obviously not anywhere nearly as intoxicated, and he falls into the other category of being buzzed and armed, which could result in someone being dangerous, and in this case, it did. So you're only partially correct, but also you're partially wrong. Have a nice day. Stay away from alcohol.
Guy should of never been in a bar, drinking and had a gun. That’s the reason it’s against the law. Alcohol impairs judgement even to the best of citizens of the United States. What a tragic case, he deserves jail. if he would of followed the law there never would of been a funeral.
Rip Garrett… another kid with dreams and goals taken out like he was nothing. You will be missed, young man. 🤦🏾♀️

In Florida it's illegal to conceal carry a weapon in a bar. I don't think the stand-your-ground law would even apply?
Even if you own the property? I'm not so sure it's the same for owners.
Why was there a parking lot in a bar? Shooting happened in a parking lot.
@@Hayotowin if the law applies to the owner, then he shouldnt have had the gun on him while in the establishment, which meant he purposefully went to grab it and do this, not because he was in any fear.
Just 8 mins in and listening to Brewer tell his version of events and thinking that Garrett's mates and the CCTV would surely tell a different story... So sorry that an accomplished and nice young man had to lose his life this way. Glad I don't live in the States.

You can’t “stand your ground” when your the one doing the advancing… this is so sad.. I’ve noticed a lot of liquor store owners are real jerks…
Liquor store owner is another word for alcoholism😂
Also... gun store owners. Always some old "expert" hanging around to make you feel stupid when you ask a question.
I have a feeling Preston Brewer is one of those guys who lets his buddies and everyone else know "I'm Armed, I'm always armed and if someone wants to get tough with me, I'll take care of them, no problem". He couldn't wait for an excuse to use that gun. He just as easily could have said "Hey, come on guys you can't be hanging out back here and pissing on my building. I don't want to call the cops but I will if I have to". 99% of people will be gone rather than deal with the cops.
From the video it looks like Brewer was moving forward, not standing his ground or in retreat. This negates self-defense. He could just as easily have drawn a cellphone and dialed 911 instead of a gun and spilling death. Be interesting to see how this plays out.
Lol if he was smart he would immediately ask for a lawyer.
Please never leave this channel. The voice is perfect for the compelling nature of the videos. Given the situation. He could have drawn and stood his ground, the drunk didn't seem like a threat however we are not there and words are obviously being exchanged. Just my opinion this didn't look like self defense , it looks like a little man "coward" taking advantage of a situation to hurt someone else. From my prospective he wanted to shoot this young man as soon as he saw him. He's going away for a long time.
This man had no regard for a human life. He was just trigger happy. I don't think he was telling the truth. If the young man fell on top of him when he was shot he would have had blood on him. Full of 💩 I hope he rots in prison.
Now this poor young man lost his precious life. He seemed like a nice person. And a good kid. RIP
I believe a strange motivating factor here is envy- envy of Hughes’ youth. May sound crazy, but the fact that someone is in the prime of their life is often enraging enough to set off a rotten old killer. Garrett Hughes was young, handsome as hell, absolutely shredded, a walking embodiment of peak masculinity looking ahead to a bounteous world that’s his for the taking. The perpetrator; here’s a guy who’s running around doing bills, buried in paperwork, employee oversight, licensure ratification, district protocols, drywall repair, occupant capacity violations, the fire marshal and the health inspector are chasing him, he’s gotta clean out his inbox, his wife hates him, his ex wife hates him more, his kids want nothing to do with him, he’s got a corvette in his garage he’s never driven, and worst of all… his d!ck is broken.
I was thinking the same thing! This is a recently divorced man that, of his own admission, was hanging out after his niece and her companion left the bar hoping to find someone to hook up with. I think that he saw a young, athletic guy and it caused some jealousy to rise up in the shooter. The young man wasn’t even urinating on the shooter’s building SMH!
Omg. I feel the same way ! Jealous that this young man was handsome and in his prime.
i disagree. i'm 49 and i don't run around feeling "envy" for young people. why would i? that's not how it works. when you age you don't run around jealous of everyone who's young. maybe the odd person is but that's an absurd perspective. also, being older doesn't mean you have "no opportunities" and your life is over. i mean, it may take some work, but you can get yourself in good shape, look good and likely attract women from various ages. i mean, i might be lucky because im 6'4" and i'm thin and in shape, but although i have friends who are younger, i never ever feel envy for youth.
it's also not easy being young. you're not taken that seriously, you don't have life experience and wisdom you gain from being "around the block" and, quite frankly, i don't know anyone around my age who walks around feeling envy towards young people. they're content those days are over. plus, you have memories. that's good enough. i was terribly insecure at that age and a lot of people are. it takes time to build up confidence and really discover who you are...
no offense. i imagine you're young/ youngish. i just don't really like ageism and it seems to be an 'ism' that is commonly accepted. i hope it changes.
the guy was a total insecure and entitled prick and what he did was horrible. i just doubt that's the reason
@@kristovapalenkova5884 disagree. the shooter may be older but he's not unattractive... besides the belly lol
An interesting supposition.
What a needless thing to have happened. He saw a guy having a piss and felt so angry over it that he decided to kill him. Deserves to never be released from jail.
Reminds me of the Michael Drejka case, where he shot Markeis McGlockton because Markeis parked in a handicapped parking spot at a liquor store.
Drejka was also butt hurt because the kids wouldn't obey him.
Drejka doesn't understand what it means to be young and dumb. They do harmless stuff like listen to music too loud. Let it go!!
The narcissist. Maybe you can work on that personality in prison.
Carrying a firearm requires great responsibility and proper training to avoid unnecessary injuries or death!
It is heartbreaking this young man died!!!
the less guns out there the better, this wouldn't have happened without it
1. Brewer lied about Hughes advancing
2. Brewer lied about how many shots he fired
3. Brewer is no longer on his property
4. Appears Brewer is the one being physically threatening
5. Brewer drew his weapon long before any altercation started
6. The only one "advancing" was Brewer
7. The kid's arms are down at his side the ENTIRE time
8. Brewer fired at point blank range. He could have turned and walked away. If you CAN do that, then it's not stand-your-ground.
9. Brewer admits he knew the kid was unarmed
Brewer lost his temper and shot a kid dead. Now he's trying to get out of it. Ballsy, considering he must know there's a camera, and witnesses.
0:41 - there is another camera, too
6/15/23 - He's been indicted for 1st degree murder. GUILTY - 35-45 years in state prison.
Pretty telling when he is told the young man dies he reacted coldly didn't seem to phase him at all! Honestly, he should have minded his own business & if he had life would have gone on for everyone....my heart goes out to the victim's family 💔
I actually think he froze and realized his life is over.
The FIRST TIME he Shut up as reality hit- not of what he's Donr or what befell the kid. The fine young man ! But of what would now befall Him!
What a BEAST
I like how his only reaction to the detective saying the young man was in “critical” condition was literally just a half-assed “fuck” under his breath as if he just realized he dropped a 20 dollar bill on his way to the station 🥴
I remember someone saying that its always men that carry the guns and use them, when they feel the slightest bit threatened. meanwhile women have a real reason to feel threatened in certain situations due to being at a disadvantage against a man, but most of them don't carry any weapons or maybe something like a pepper spray.
I do get it that the trigger-happy men are on a power trip or they think they are macho, but even a child can use a gun to kill someone, so what exactly is so manly about shooting someone?
those men are nothing but cowards, who fantasize about an opportunity to feel strong and powerful, which actually means they are weak and pathetic.
Why did the officers wait hours to get a blood alcohol level for Lloyd? I mean he probably had 4 bottles of water during that time. A bar and guns never end well.

It's the case of a small man, who knew he could never win a physical altercation, so he decided to shoot someone instead of getting his ego bruised. I had a friend in high school who's dad was very similar to this guy. He was a tiny man but had a ego like nonother because he walked around with a glock on his hip. Ended up tragically killing someone that sucker punched him outside a bar. I believe he got like 40 years as it was just utterly unnecessary.
This guy (driver) is a complete idiot and desche bag. Plus he's wrong on the law on a few points
1. Police can pull you out of the car during a routine traffic stop for no reason (see Penn v Mims). The whole "only roll down you window a little bit" is a stupid old wife's tale. He's lucky the cop wasn't wanting to press the issue.
2. Demanding a DL during a traffic stop is not a 4th Amendment violation. The 4th Amendment violation may, or may not, occur with regard to the grounds for the initial stop. Here the cop says he failed to use ha turn signal and the driver says it was for yelling. this is a factual dispute which will be resolved by a judge.
... a disgrace to this country.
