I used to think it was so uncool to mention the MCG, St Kilda, Brunswick or whatever in songs.. but his music really spoke to me when I began travelling Australia and elsewhere. I have memories being on a Contiki bus full of Aussies and having the driver play Paul Kelly's music with the whole bus singing along... Cool to see a reaction!
all Paul Kelly's lyrics are exceptional and worth a careful listen.. and such a superb melody "Before too long The one that you're loving Will wish that he'd never met you Before too long He who is nothing Will suddenly come into view"
I would love to see you do ''To Her Door''. That song always make me cry. Another beautiful tune by Paul Kelly is ''From Little Things Big Things Grow''. 🍷It's so cool to see you bringing some Paul Kelly into your life. Thank you.
One of my favourite Australian artists! This video has always made me laugh because it's a pretty accurate depiction of the types you'd get in Sydney .. Maybe more so then than now. Australia really does love this guy!
While the rest of the world tells us what we are, from imitating our accent crudely and treating our company like it's a novelty and hyper focusing on our eccentrics (Raygun being our latest laughing stock), Paul Kelly is there to remind us who we really are... Peace! 🙏
Beautifully said Rachel. I'm an American that's been a citizen of your great country for four decades and am married to an Australian and have Aussie adult children. It's not fun returning to the States with my family and spending most of the time deflecting silly questions and comments. Paul Kelly is one of my alltime favorite artists, but that's only because I understand him out of living in your great country for almost 45 years.
👍 to Chris for perking up!! I think you guys should try not only INXS's ''To Look At You'' (music video) and maybe check out the official video for ''The One Thing''. I never mentioned this, but I have always been slightly disappointed that you chose to do a live version of INXS's ''The One Thing'' and not the official 1982 video. I only just remembered this after having a conversation with Jay about early INXS and their US breakthrough on the very new MTV. I was a fan of INXS from very early on, but they weren't what I classed as ''sophisticated'', but instead a meat and potatoes New Wave pub band with some smoothness. They weren't the types that could afford models or yatchs like Duran Duran. So, when I saw the ''The One Thing'' video on TV, I was blown away and stimulated. The video has models Susan Stenmark and Karen Pini (Mungo Jerry ''Pushbike Song'' clip) and Hutchence's first flame, Michele Bennett. You seem accepting to a ''2 in 1'' for Models and The Numbers. I can't see why the same couldn't be done for two INXS classics. Just an idea! 😙
I have always loved this song! This isn't about Paul Kelly, but I song I would really like to request. Now I am not comfortable using the ''birthday card'' on you guys, but I am sort of keen to see you guys react to a song that means a lot to me, and is very close to my heart. The song is called 'One Perfect Day' by a Melbourne band called Little Heroes. Before my hubby and I got together, we spent years seeing eachother on and off. There were times when he was overseas or in a relationship and vice versa. The one song we shared a love for was ''One Perfect Day''. I was just watching this and thought it would be great to see a reaction to it.. The Countdown clip is a bit boring. The official video on the Austech channel is the one I remember the most and is the most visually appealing.
Gilian.. The only reason the Countdown clip for ''One Perfect Day'' is boring to you is because you're not in it! If there was a flash of your blurry-out of focus Countdown kid face in the background, you would be insisting the Haniers take a look at the video so they could try and spot you. Just like how you and Hayley thought the two little running kids in the Pushbike Song video was the two of you when you were little girls. And guess what happened? YOur friend Carebear pointed out that the two figures were little boys... Very embarrassing Gillybean.. As a friend, I just have to say that was embarrassing. Gillybean, you and Hayley were spoiled rotten as kids! I watched those Countdown clips with you and Hayley jumping about with your little clique, thinking were the coolest kids in Melbourne.. All dressed up in the latest fashion... Hayley smearing saving cream on John Paul Young's face.. And you wonder why Australia hated countdown kids... I was in Puberty Blues as a background extra, but you never hear me bragging, do you????? Happy Birthday Gillybean!!! That's my roasting for the year! 😛
Hey, Chris and Cynthia, here's (yet) another suggestion for a two-version Wednesday-... with some sibling rivalry thrown in: "love & a Molotov cocktail". You have the original punk recording by The Flys (UK 1977) with Neil O'Connor... and the techno cover (and video) by Neil's more successful sister Hazel!
I got to work as a cabbie in Melbourne in the early 80's, and the characters depicted in the video is pretty close to the types I had to deal with. I was still struggling as a newly arrived pom, and taking on all sorts of jobs. Struggling in Australia at that time was bloody good fun for me. As for PK, I first met him in the late 70's when he was playing in a band called High Rise Bombers, whose guitarist, Martin Armiger, would move on to The Sports. Paul Kelly was a nice enough bloke, but it was hard to know how far he'd go because his early work was patchy. Obviously he has done well for himself and that's good to see. ''Leaps And Bounds'' is my favourite PK song. The band picture you closed your video on is Paul Kelly And The Dots from years earlier.
I'm an old Melbourne gigrat and I have a bit of history with this fella. Songs I recommend you do... ''Darling It Hurts'' ''To Her Door'' ''Dumb Things'' ''Careless'' ''Sweet Guy'' ''From Little Things Big Things Grow'' ''Every Fucking City'' (just for a laugh) ''From St. Kilda to Kings Cross'' (my personal favourite) ''Paul Kelly - You're 39, You're Beautiful and You're Mine (Live)''
I first saw him singing with Joe Camilleri back in the Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons days, and I thought he was a bit of a Bruce Springsteen knock off. He's done plenty to change that impression. 👍
The video isn’t distracting you from much lyrically, and Paul often has some pretty fundamental music. Paul has much more compelling lyrically.in other songs. It’s a song that many Aussies from the era will have enjoyed as a radio song, but I don’t expect it’ll blow your socks off.
My husband has been a Paul Kelly fan since the release of his first solo album _Post_ in 1985. It's quite easy to relate to songs like ''From St. Kilda To Kings Cross'' when traveling from Melbourne to Sydney. He does give fine description of the Australian experience, though his earlier work is a bit mucky... A mishmash of Melbourne pub rock, New Wave and even Ska. Thankfully, he found his balance with 1986's _Gossip._ From that release onwards, he has been flying. I suggest ''From St. Kilda To Kings Cross'', ''Darling It Hurts'', ''To Her Door'', 'Leaps And Bounds'', ''Careless'', ''Sweet Guy'', and ''From Little Things Big Things Grow''. I'd also like you guys to check out his previous band, Paul Kelly & The Dots, and a song called ''Billy Baxter''. Cheers, Hayley
I'm curious Yahoo! Hayley. What did you Countdown kids think of Paul Kelly in the early days? Not talking Coloured Girls period, I'm talking Paul Kelly And The Dots, because I don't remember The Dots being Countdown chart smashers.
@@Robbo766 We thought ''Billy Baxter'' was okay, but PK and The Dots didn't really rev us up. And radio was giving the single a lot of spins in its heyday.
Cool reaction.. Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls were a Sydney band. How come you ended the video on a photo of Paul Kelly And The Dots? They're a bunch of Carlton rockers that Paul Kelly did two records with before departing Melbourne for Sydney.

He's very Australian and proudly namechecks a lot of places around Melbourne and Sydney. His song ''Leaps And Bounds'' makes mention of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and ''Darling It Hurts'' references Darlinghurst (a place in Sydney, which nicely rhymes with Hurts). If you're wanting to hear him be a little more international, listen to his song ''Every F*cking City''. You should also take a listen to Casey Chambers' live interpretation of Eminem's "Lose Yourself". By the way, I'm enjoying your channel and have subscribed. 💖from Melbourne.

If you've already done ''How To Make Gravy'', then you have probably picked up by now that this song is just an example of the styles and subjects he tackles. Songs like ''From Little Things Big Things Grow'', ''From St. Kilda To Kings Cross'' and ''Every Fucking City'' stand as good examples of the type of songwriter he is... He's a national treasure.
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering They changed the name for the Australian market as well. Paul Kelly is not a racist, you just have to look at who he has collaborated with.. But it the innocence (some say ignorance) of his time and that he was a big Lou Reed and thought the name was a nice nod to the New Yorker.
I'm glad they changed their name to The Messengers. Even upon hearing the band's name back in 1985, I knew it would go down like a lead balloon if they were serious about taking on overseas markets.
European releases were credited to Paul Kelly and the Messengers due to possible racist interpretations of his innocent nod to Lou Reed (Coloured Girls).
Lol, you play Paul Kelly, and again tales of child birth!! I'm not complaining, but it seems there's something about Paul that gets you guys to open up, and it's refreshing. To her Door is your next "must do". And again, I'd really like you guys to listen to Jon English. He started out in early 70's, through the 80's. He had his own tv show/sitcom called Altogether Now, and in later life, did Pirates Of Penzance. Oh, and he was Judas in the original Australian version of Jesus Christ Superstar. Please do either Hollywood 7 (or Hollywood Seven) or there is a live recording of a song he wrote called She Was Real. You will be glad you did.
"Leaps and Bounds" and "Darling It Hurts" are two more good Paul Kelly songs. BTW, if you like this, there's a brilliant and eccentric British singer called Robyn Hitchcock who often touches the same sort of sounds as Paul Kelly - try his "Madonna of the Wasps".
Gee if you’ve only done a couple of songs by Paul Kelly… you have to make up some ground….. + his written for other artists too….re: Vika and Linda …. If I could start today day again….
Great song, but no where near being my favourie by the guy. You two might like ''Every Fucking City'' and if you're really curious about Australians, maybe do ''From St. Kilda To Kings Cross''. I grew up on this guy's music.

What a shame it's the PC video that omits the cross-dressing shop lifter part. There's an alternative cut of this video that shows a guy in drag (I think played by Billy Baxter, who was the subject of an earlier Paul Kelly song) stealing from a shop and jumping into Paul Kelly's taxi before handing him a handful of cash. It added so much to the humour of the video, but it was obviously cut out of this clip and replaced with boring sites of Sydney. I had to watch the clip twice because I thought there was something missing.
Was wondering the same thing as watched the video. Was Paul Kelly an actual taxi driver back in early 1980's? I assume the video done in parts of Sydney or Brisbane suburbs.
@@NickJewlachow-of3yh I'm confused. I always thought the clip was shot in Sydney. The house the pregnant woman and crazy husband is at looks like a Sydney house in the city.
@@NickJewlachow-of3yh Why? Apart from the VB beer cans on piano I cannot work out from his driving if it in Melbourne at all. No trams suggest it probably not but then beer cans could say, yes... ha ha... Toohey's beer is normally what silly New South Welshmen drank. My guess is Sydney somewhere. The park area he drove through could be around Moore Park in Sydney or could be around Parkville or Carlton in Melbourne. I will laugh if it ends up being Brisbane which is an outsider. If someone can see the number plate state it would answer it but cars motion is not slow enough on video to notice on first watch.
@@ComfortablyDumb_Opinions So it probably is Sydney but he stuck with the beer drinking from Melbourne with VB beer cans :) I do not think I drank a VB can for decades....Probably since late 80's or early 90's.
I’m 💯 relaxed that I’ve established my credentials as a campaigner against xenophobia so I’m trusting my Aussie cousins to accept that this track in MY opinion is quite poor , bland and forgettable , not because it’s an Aus band but because I just don’t like it . Never heard of them before and I’m hoping the other tracks OnceWas has recommended are markedly different and I’ll give them a listen when they come up eventually with an open mind . But THIS one ? .. no thank you ! 👀 👍🏴
He can be an acquired taste, but there's a steep catalogue of very renowned and respected songs. I would say this song works for most Aussies because it received a lot of radio play in its time, but I can see how bland it would be to those new to it. I'd say don't wait for reactors to get to the songs, but instead check out ''Dumb Things'', ''To Her Door'', ''Darling It Hurts'' and ''Every Fucking City'' just to get to the most palatable of his song catalogue. Personally, i think he is a very rewarding artist but I am a Melbourne boy and was raised on the bloke's music. I'm going to check out this channel's reaction to ''How To Make Gravy''. God bless...
I couldn't agree more with LeapsAndBounds. I moved to Melbourne from California in the late 70's and I got to see Paul Kelly when he was playing around the Carlton pubs with a band called Paul Kelly & The Dots. They were very bland and forgettable. ''Before Too Long'' was an improvement and sign of a promise that he has lived up to.

Personally, I'd do ''Darling It Hurts'' as the next PK & CG's song.
Great song, but no where near being my favourie by the guy. You two might like ''Every Fucking City'' and if you're really curious about Australians, maybe do ''From St. Kilda To Kings Cross''. I grew up on this guy's music.
I heard he was working as a kitchen hand during his days with The Dots.
I have a request for Gillybean! I want to see Jenny Morris - She Has To Be Loved, and be sure its the official video because I had a bit of a thing for old Jenny Morris...
I'm serious about my request! I want to see ''She Has To Be Loved'' by Jenny Morris. That's my birthday request for Gillybean!
How is this for Gillian? Do you even know if she likes the song? Just admit Jenny Morris made you change your undies whenever you heard her music and this request is for your indulgence. I don't blame you.. I didn't mind the old Jenny Morris myself.
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr Don't you start wrongfully accusing me of being a self-pleaser Ms Sun! I didn't cream to INXS videos! 😉😜
@@Robbo766 What's wrong with creaming to INXS videos? i did it all the time. I had many wonderful Saturday mornings watching the ''The One Thing'' video on the TV in my room, gazing at INXS and the models and that's sexy pussy cats on the table.
you closed your video with a photo of paul kelly and the dots, an earlier melbourne band. coloured girls/messengers were from sydney. pk's from adelaide
Air Supply were working delivering bread in Melbourne in the early years.
Paul Kelly works with the best musicians Australia has to offer.
Joe Camilleri is the same.

Damn Batty, you're right! Why did they cut out the shoplifting cross-dresser? Who the heck would be offended by that?
Was wondering the same thing as watched the video.
Was Paul Kelly an actual taxi driver back in early 1980's?
I assume the video done in parts of Sydney or Brisbane suburbs.
I’d say Melbourne
@@shaundgb7367 Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls were a Sydney band. His previous band, The Dots, were a Melbourne group.
@@ComfortablyDumb_Opinions So it probably is Sydney but he stuck with the beer drinking from Melbourne with VB beer cans :)
I do not think I drank a VB can for decades....Probably since late 80's or early 90's.
He's one that has to grow on you in time. You might like 'Dumb Things'.
That was an entertaining reaction, but one thing you got wrong. The picture is not Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls. That's Paul Kelly And The Dots.
Not according to Wikipedia. Released in 1986 by Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls. No more Dots after 1982.
@@kimn9802 The picture at the end of the video Sir.
Misunderstood you. Thought you meant the song. All good.
Did the taxi driver make you pay?
This was okay, pleasant enough, but not exciting.
Id call this average, but that would be overdoing it IMO, so very poor and amateurish 🏴✌️
Scottish know all about “ amateurish “!
@@thrusta100 oh yeah, go go raygun lmao hahahaha 🏴✌️
Unassuming guitar pop, competently played.
👍🏴
@@LeapsAndBoundsTops cheers for that , genuinely appreciated ✊
