This reminds me so much of Tails Of Iron! Art style specifically, and is challenging as well! Was good enough for me to platinum it! I just picked this game up for under 2 bucks on the playstation store so i figured id try it out
Tails of Iron was pretty cool, but for me this is the gold standard in this genre by some distance. Loved this game, it is the type of game you can replay over and over due to the varied world and interesting character progression. Cheers
The one thing holding this game back for me is the combat. This game doesn't take advantage of platformer boss design (aside from oddities like the Tree of Men), instead smushing the depth of Souls enemy designs into 2D. Rolling through an enemy's attacks in 3D has a lotta variation relating to safety, offensive pressure... But here, the best decision 95% of the time is dodging through enemies as they attack. As far as slow and deliberate goes, Fromsoft hasn't been topped. Team Ninja pulls way ahead in the fast & brutal category with Nioh and Stranger of Paradise. The exploration, though? The RPG elements? The sense of adventure? Can't think of a single Soulslike that comes close to Salt and Sanctuary. Few even attempt it. Even if I find the combat basic, you feel great going from two-shotting an enemy to one-shotting them with upgrades, choosing the right attack buff, or transmuting a weapon. So combat at least excels as an extension of all that stuff.
@@PlayGames_PG Plenty of platformers involve more intricate management of positioning and attack range and stuff than I experienced in Salt and Sanctuary. I don't think this game's combat design compares to most of the Igavanias, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight... And if you include all the retro games 2D, and not just its Metroidvania contemporaries? Treasure, Konami, and Capcom's best?
Its similliar to Darksouls when it comes to boss arenas, they are all just open fields. This is necasarry since you have built variety here. You mentioned the tree of man and huge chunks of the Community see him as the worst boss, exactly because he can be absolutely terrible depending on the build you use, doing it as a tank for example will take forever while a ranger deals with him easily. The games you mentioned all just have one playstyle, even the diffrent weapons in castlevania dont change a whole lot, in Salt and sanctuary you have a lot of styles so the safest bet is to just have a regular Arena to ensure you dont frustrate the player or Potentialy even make something Impossible for certain otherwise viable builds.

Part of the thrill of an RPG with distinct builds is succeeding where your build is at a disadvantage. A game as non-linear as Salt and Sanctuary could afford that, since you can always walk in another direction and find other stuff to do and either overcome a tough boss with raw power, build up a new weapon, splash spellcasting for utility, grind up a consumable, etc.
Hi, Blasphemous is another good example of this genre, I think you'll enjoy it. If I had to choose Salt and Sanctuary would be the one I'd go for, it's more in-depth and also the character system allows for a varied approach, but both are good games.

I recommend it every time, only bad thing is in some of new patches they nerfed long jump, me personaly used it a lot and getting removed from game was big nono but it didn t change it that much. I know many people point to Hollow Knight, but I don't think Hollow Knight is like Dark Souls at all. I don't even consider it a Souls-like. Whereas Salt & Sanctuary is souls-like through and through. It's got the atmosphere, the stat progression, the weapons, the stamina usage. The strength, dex, magic, and faith builds. All of it.
I would agree with you. Obviously it lifts masses of things from Dark Souls, but it does it in such a charming, addictive and playable way. It has to be the best value indie game I've ever paid money for.

I never got around to picking this one up but dishwasher 2 is one of the best games ive ever played. Im sure this is good just not sure the slower pace is for me
It is a slower pace than Dishwasher 2, but I don't think that is a big negative. This is a much larger game with huge amounts of depth and I would recommend you give it a go, probably the best Ska Studios game.
The best soulslike I ever played, even I like more that ds3. Remind me to much to the first time I played Dark Souls 1. The lore, world construction and enviroment is incredible and unique. It have everything I like from the souls but also these thing that make it different.
Bought it for 1,79€ on the PS store. Bought it because it comes with the vita version and its the perfect game to play on a handheld. Miniature souls. Plays fantastic on the Vita :D
Completed it several times and absolutely love it, still missing 4 achievements though. Never done a Mage build so I reckon that's on the cards. Just downloaded it again, always makes me laugh that it's only 2Gb lol. Great video, liked and subbed. Lets hope I can beat The Unspeakable Deep finally 👍

Seemed like the most imba class in the game. Just gotta lvl up a bit, and find that cool staff Rowan's sth sth... I was demolishing everything. But of course, started the game as a dex build.
Just got this game yesterday for $3. I've been avoiding it because, from what I could see the graphics and animation were both horrible. As it turns out the graphics are bearable, the animation is good and the control/feel is great. Now I'm annoyed at myself for waiting so long since I knew I would love the it from a gameplay standpoint (Metroidvanias and Soulslikes are by favorite genres).
@@PlayGames_PG it can be static, showing the whole room (with characters moving). It can slide sometimes to follow the character when you move far ahead. It can also be completely separate (like in strategy games).
60 dollars for this game , I got it today from PlayStation store online for 2 dollars and I feel it doesn’t worth it 😅. Far away from blasphemous or even prince of Persia . Any way as long you enjoy the game , that’s all matters . Happy gaming 😅

Salt 1 the flawed masterpiece, Salt 2 the red headed step child, Salt 3 horrible level design with super cool bosses and finally Elden Salts, like the 1st one but it's open world now lol
My only hesitation with this game is that I just can’t understand why they had to make the characters so fugly lol it’s so hard to look at it actually makes me less excited to try it

This is an all round better game I'd say. I did like Blasphemous on the whole but this is more role playing focused and I'd say the combat here is more in-depth.

to this day still the only souls derivative I've finished, truth be told. not that other games are bad of course, but this one just felt right to me
I think you are not alone there, lots of people give up on soulslike type games but this one defo keeps you coming back for more.

I tried making a mage as my first character, but it was terrible.
Start with a swordsman and add magic later.
Mage is okay if you're playing co-op with a swordsman to do the dirty work.

I think it goes beyond what the Dishwasher achieved, although the Dishwasher was more explosive in terms of the presentation and pace.
