This video alone shows how absolutely groundbreaking Half Life 2's facial animation was at the time. These models and rigs are from 2004. It's almost hard to believe. This video was also created before Source Filmmaker was a thing, makes it even more impressive the amount of work that probably went into this.
Honestly, they still are. All the recent games i've played have okay-ish facial animation but they don't feel organic like the HL2 ones. I think the closest i've seen are RDR2 and Half-Life Alyx (obviously)
I feel like this song perfectly fits with the story and vibe of half life. In the end of half life 2, what you did only got rid of the problem. So many people died, so much was destroyed, and in the end it didn't even matter.

I don't think people can really fully appreciate the level of animation here without trying sfm yourself, and then have the realization of this actually being made in gmod. Factoring the date and time in, undoubtedly, absolutely, insane.

It's an old way of doing it, in my opinion its better because its made in-engine instead of being only a set of anims. Civil Protection (A classic I recommend everyone watches again) did it, and it looks pretty smooth in some scenes. The guy who made Civil Protection actually has a tutorial up on how to do stuff like this, though its old and is probably broken.

okay memes aside, i didnt even realise this was made with gmod at first its so damn impressive. this person managed to make this look smoother than any modern sfm animation 2 years before it was even a thing and i absolutely adore it, props to you.
Honestly, some of my favorite gmod videos are from 2009-2012. Dasboschitt, Kitty0706, Rubberfruit, Raikujo. If you watched their more "recent content" as in, most of their channels ended around 2015 or earlier, you'd think they made content as recently as 2016 or even now. That's because a lot of SFM and GMod animators took notes from these great folks. Definitely check out Schwiggan. His animations were as clean as the one in the music video. Yes, he still makes videos to this day. Brings a tear to my eye.
The way this has better lip syncing, expressiveness, and cinematography than a lot of SFM animations while being made 2 years before SFM even existed is ridiculously impressive. The amount of care, passion, and time put into it is palpable.
And yet it took like a decade for it to blow up and turn into a huge meme in the half life community, I'm pretty sure it would have MUCH more views if it blew up when it was first posted
Finding this masterpiece from the memes, it baffles me how authentic this is, no fancy effects or anything, it just feels like an organic half life 2 official in game cinematic. This video is so good it feels like a fever dream

Thanks I just clicked on this video to watch the music video and I don't have ears so I can't hear what the song says like any other carbon based life form with more than two brain cells. This man, using only SDK face poser and Garry's Mod, made something better than most professional SFM animators would create. Gotta admit, I'm impressed!
I come back to this video every now and then because I missed it when RUclips just had a bunch of people making whatever they want. There was no exploitation of the algorithm or clickbait, it was just doing stuff for the fun of it. Also it just goes hard.
I played through HL2 and its episodes for the first time a few years ago, and Ep1's closing scene genuinely wowed me. Like, the games are clearly quite old visually, but the presentation and scale of the Citadel's collapse and collateral damage actually had me on the edge of my seat over how convincing it still looks today.

I played through HL2 and its episodes for the first time a few years ago, and Ep1's closing scene genuinely wowed me. Like, the games are clearly quite old visually, but the presentation and scale of the Citadel's collapse and collateral damage actually had me on the edge of my seat over how convincing it still looks today.
