- This is a video I did for a contest machinima.com was hosting some time back
(EDIT: if I remember right, it was a tribute to Eli contest, which I did not even place in because it was rejected for copyright music, right at the start of RUclips really starting to crack down on copyright music). .. That made me make my own silly music, because I loved making "music videos" so much at the time. Lol.
The song is "In The End" by Linkin Park. I posted it here once and RUclips removed the audio. Hopefully, with their new system, it will allow the video and just give a link to the song on itunes instead of silencing it. I hope some of you haven't seen it yet.
I used Half-Life 2, Garry's Mod, and SDK Face Poser to make the video.

This is why every game ever should have open source codes
While I agree with that sentiment, Valve has actually never open sourced any of their games, just made the development tools freely available
Online games would be ruined by bots and cheaters, unfortunately. However, good mod tools can go a long way.

The source engine isn't really FOSS, and Source 2013 binaries haven't been updated for almost a decade. However, this video use Source SDK 2007 and Gmod. Source 2007 was actually pretty up-to-date for the time, and Source 2009 didn't have it's binaries publicly released

Remember, this was made way before Source Filmmaker, yet it's so clean
It's an old way of doing it, in my opinion its better because its made in-engine instead of being only a set of anims.
Civil Protection (A classic I recommend everyone watches again) did it, and it looks pretty smooth in some scenes.
The guy who made Civil Protection actually has a tutorial up on how to do stuff like this, though its old and is probably broken.

This video alone shows how absolutely groundbreaking Half Life 2's facial animation was at the time. These models and rigs are from 2004. It's almost hard to believe. This video was also created before Source Filmmaker was a thing, makes it even more impressive the amount of work that probably went into this.
well, probably slightly earlier. 2003 at the earliest.
Honestly, they still are. All the recent games i've played have okay-ish facial animation but they don't feel organic like the HL2 ones. I think the closest i've seen are RDR2 and Half-Life Alyx (obviously)

I don't think people can really fully appreciate the level of animation here without trying sfm yourself, and then have the realization of this actually being made in gmod. Factoring the date and time in, undoubtedly, absolutely, insane.

The way this has better lip syncing, expressiveness, and cinematography than a lot of SFM animations while being made 2 years before SFM even existed is ridiculously impressive. The amount of care, passion, and time put into it is palpable.

Honestly, some of my favorite gmod videos are from 2009-2012.
Dasboschitt, Kitty0706, Rubberfruit, Raikujo. If you watched their more "recent content" as in, most of their channels ended around 2015 or earlier, you'd think they made content as recently as 2016 or even now.
That's because a lot of SFM and GMod animators took notes from these great folks.
Definitely check out Schwiggan. His animations were as clean as the one in the music video. Yes, he still makes videos to this day. Brings a tear to my eye.

okay memes aside, i didnt even realise this was made with gmod at first its so damn impressive. this person managed to make this look smoother than any modern sfm animation 2 years before it was even a thing and i absolutely adore it, props to you.
It wasn’t even made with gmod, it was made fully in source sdk, which is much harder given the quality of this video
