  • The Royal Ballet take their morning ballet class led by Brian Maloney and accompanied by pianist Robert Clark, as filmed for #WorldBalletDay 2019.
    Royal Ballet dancers take class six days a week to warm up for rehearsals and performances. As Kristen McNally described during World Ballet Day 2015, ‘class is all about getting the body warm for the day’s rehearsal - and it’s also a great time to concentrate on yourself, to improve your technique’.
    Class at The Royal Ballet lasts about 90 minutes and covers a wide range of movements. It starts with exercises of increasing complexity at the barre before the dancers move into the centre of the room. This is a unique window into the daily life of a dancer at The Royal Ballet, showing the dedication and athleticism required for every step, as well as allowing viewers a unique look inside one of the Company's rehearsal studios.

      I'm a ballet pianist as well. The thing that amazes me about this guy is how quick he picks up the tempo. One thing about this class that's different than the classes I play for is the pace. They move from one combination to the next with minimal time in between. I always get nervous with teachers who count in "fast-forward" motion, because I'm not sure what tempo they really want. These two must work together a lot to understand each other that well.

    • @lindakipps7551

      @@peterjoseph8958 Company class and classes in your local studio are often quite different. Company class is often fast paced like this class. You have to think really fast.

    • @peterjoseph8958
      @peterjoseph8958 3 года назад +4

      @@lindakipps7551 That's true, but this is fast even by company class standards I've seen. I've played for company classes for years at Silicon Valley Ballet and some ABT company classes, and usually there's about 30 seconds to a minute in between combinations, depending on the teacher.

      @@peterjoseph8958 have only just seen your post a year on from the 2019 Day, but wanted to say that all you ballet pianists are in a class of your own, and should get more recognition! He's really good! I'm a ballet pianist myself and it's really hard to get through and entire class catching the end of every single combination and getting every tempo exactly right. This guy is telepathic!

    Lol! The theme from Oulander is the warmup. Nice barre, working and stretching the feet and body. I am loving the music for this class! People don't always realize how important good music and playing is important to the tone and energy of the class everyday. As always kudo's the Royal Ballet accompanists! i love World Ballet day because we get to see the Royal Ballet strut their stuff. Always good. Very fun class today.

    The camera work is just awful this year. We don’t want to see lingering close-ups of faces, or ariel long-shots, or the constant frantic camera movement which only ever allows us to see a fragment of a step. Every now and then....WE WANT TO SEE PEOPLE DANCE!

      hard agree. I've been following along on this video as a warm up for my workouts and even though I've done this like 10+ times there's still some points where I'm lost on the choreography. That's how bad it is lol. I'm certainly very close by now to having most of it memorized but the camera work is so bad sometimes I'm like, am I on the wrong foot? And I won't be, but the angles are so bad I get confused.
