Something I noticed about the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords and the "__ of Commanding __ Elementals" items. Since all the Conjure Creature spells were reworked in 2024 to produce a damaging AoE instead of summoning an ally with a statblock, the change from "You can cast this spell with this item" to "You have to use an action to summon this statblock and here's all the rules on commanding it" was far more necessary than just buffing the effect of the 2014 spell.
Almost like everyone who whined about choosing creatures from the monster manual wanted. But we were told wasn't happening. "Well the majority hate templates so instead we will just fundamentally change the spells.
wait what I haven't seen these changes, they turned summons into... AoEs??? that's so baffling wtf
As someone who likes summons (too much) this change sounds terrible to me (dms turn order may be happier but :T)
@Nudgarrobot they changed the conjure spells that summon multiple creatures into different aoe like effects that are similar but not the same as spirit guardians. Their are still the summon spells that were from Tasha's cauldron of everything.
@@andrewdowning6520 those are NOT conjure spells they are a worse version of beast companions. As for the changed spells Why, we had Spirit Guardians if you want other classes to have it add it to a subclass spell list. It's bad enough that with Divine Smite being a spell now we have relegated Smite to D&D Mountain Dew. Fifty varieties and maybe 2 are worth trying.

I imagine The Book of Vile Darkness is sorta like the Grinch’s to-do list in the movie and its Vecna’s diary of villainous things he’s done
- Kicked at least 20 orphaned puppies
- Conjured evil demons to work for me and harass local towns
- LOATHE KINDNESS ENTIRELY
- Called a man a stinky fart lad
Solve world hunger, *tell NO one*.
I remember the Book of Vile Darkness as an item my chaotic good Beguiler tried to use in 3.5 with Use Magic Device. I was already waking up every day and using it to emulate alignment for a black/evil Robe of the Archmagi. We got ahold of the Book of Vile Darkness and I couldn't resist trying to emulate the evil alignment and reading it. It's the sort-of thing my character was built for.
Long story short I failed, turned chaotic evil, the big bad offered to reverse time to fix me in exchange for the book, at great cost to him that was more than made up for by the book, which got him from level like 24 to even more epic multiclassed 25 and buffed him for the big fight.
Don't read the Book of Vile Darkness, kids. It's just an infinite cacophony of screams that make a solid case for burning down orphanages, 2.5/10
29:10 He didn’t even mentioned how it was changed.
Basically 2014 Cloak of Billowing has you use a Bonus action to use it.
2024 has it where once you use your bonus action to activate it, the Cloak billows for 1 minute.
look, I forgot to open XGtE. What a fool I am.
The Cloak of Billowing in 2024 is definitely more useful
However consistently having to use a Bonus-Action to billow the cape is objectively hilarious
Armor of Vulnerability should also make you emotionally open up in a failed WIS save
"My Dad never hugged me!"
For the cube, the walls and ceilings part is saying that you can exclude them from being affected by the barrier. The point of the “if something is not able to pass theough the barrier, you cant move closer” is just to stop you from using it to break down doors/walls, push enemies of cliffs, using it as a submarine, crushing things beneath it etc. they wanted it to be a defensive item.
Yeah. I like the 2014 Cube of Force a lot better. The new one is kinda lame.
Take a shot every time Jacob says an item is unchanged before proceeding to list numerous changes
I fail to see how the OG cube of force was so complicated for people.
Cube of force has these main points:
1. It's shaped like a medium sized dice with a face on each side.
2. It has 36 charges that recharge daily at a 1d20 roll
3. It's effect is basically a large box of force around you designed to keep you out of danger you specify by the face you press on the cube.
4. This box of force will block you from moving into solid objects that it comes into contact with.
5. Each charge specifies matter that can or cannot pass through at each level. Depending on the level chosen, this can circumvent rule 4 (per the specific beats general rule).
If anybody has anything to add, feel free to.
The real magic items are the friends we made along the way.
Neeerrrrrrrddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!
JK, Friendship is a powerful dark magic that was stolen from Golgagoth The Darkness, whom is so Terrible even the T in "The" is capitalized in his name. After this theft Golgagoth The Darkness vowed to steal the happiness of all though who travers his domain, as payment for the loss of his only joy.
But I want a Vorpal Sword
Considering the existence of sentient weapons, there is a strong possibility there is truth behind that statement.
Um, DM, how much damage does my 'friendship is magic' friend do when used as an improvised melee weapon?
@@DeadLight63BRAVE ADVENTURERS, i need you to go into white plume mountain and find blackrazor, wave and whelm, so they can become my friends
Absolutely devastated that Daern's Instant Fortress doesn't do damage anymore, that was one of the funniest things to do. I once had a backup character who would use that, but then eventually switched back to my previous character. During the final battle of campaign, the party was fighting a lich, who had brainwashed my backup character. Reverse Gravity had a placed in an area, so several characters were stuck in the air. When my backup character used Daern's Instant Fortress, Reverse Gravity caused the fortress to "fall" to the ceiling, hitting a couple characters. While the DM and I had to work out the details of how the item worked, that campaign made it one of my favorite items. However, I appreciate that the different parts of it do have an AC now, since I remember the lack of one being a problem in that campaign.
I guess 2024 is the year of people reading the rules and I'm all for it.
They are reading them because they don't want anything to do with the changes
@@nickm9102 Yeah, that's why. Now stop writing your 7th seething comment and go touch some grass.
Also to try to counter the cheatbait channels
This means that 2025 is the year of people breaking all the rules.
The old cube of force was a simplified and loreless version of one of the OLDEST magic items to appear in d&d, and it made a lot of sense with the ways old games ran
From way back in the days when players weren't afraid of a little number tracking. Ammunition, specific spell components for nearly everything, charges on magic items, ENCUMBERANCE (!)...
The old Cube of Force was also really interesting. The new one might as well be a rod or wand that can cast some rafter boring spells.
@ right? Heck, the game used to recommend that players had at least a few years of college, tho that would be equivalent to highschool in modern school, well, if they actually taught what they say they did… but even so, like… half the Fun was trying to figure out what options gave you better numbers, and what things could work without number, just using imagination…
@ 100% this, having magic items that add new ways to interact with the world should be the goal, not just some “here is x free uses of a normal spell”
38:04 - the important part with the cube is the old one KILLED most users with suffocation 3/5 times unless you specified you took a breath beforehand, because it was so focused on walls they forgot the air clause from older versions of the cube.
I appreciate this abridged audiobook of the magic items!
I’m actually really glad you made this Jacob, because basically no one that I’ve seen has actually listed every item and said something’s changed. If something wasn’t changed much they just don’t say it. But I want to know anything that was or was not changed.
Yes, 2014 Cube of Force first says that solid objects (normally) can't pass through the cube, but faces 2 and 5 specifically allow walls/floors/ceilings to pass through, making this an example of "specific beats general" (which is why it says "a solid object that can't pass through the cube"). Granted, it is a bit clunky, but it does make sense.
(I think you understood it, but in case others don't)
Fun fact: Adamantine Weapons were already a thing in the game back in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything!
But not as a Magic item, instead you would coat your weapon with Adamantine similar to how your would Silver your weapons in the Player’s Handbook!
Yep 500 GP and you have a siege weapon. All this did was lock it out of player decision.
Pre-emptively mentioning this: Don’t forget that instrument of illusions no longer requires attunement.
The Cauldron of Rebirth was in Tasha’s. And it was on the cover of the book (lower right hand side). So like the Ranger 5e.24 cheated off of Tasha’s test!😂
((FYI it was Warlock or Druid attunement very rare))
Does the Cauldron of Rebirth explode when you put a living being in it, or did they decide not to get into a legal battle over a 1965 Lloyd Alexander book?
@@MonkeyJedi99glad I'm not the only person who realized that!

THE ONE PIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEECE! THE ONE PIECE IS REEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAL!

You bastard! Quick! Someone silence him!
I can confirm the book of vile darkness very much still can only be destroyed permanently if all evil in the multiverse doesn’t exist, not sure why he said that part was removed.
I don't think the old Cube of Force was too complicated. It was just simply too powerful.
Yeah I feel like it's crap now.
And Jacob's overreaction to the "BUT YOU CAN LET WALLS THROUGH?" meant that you weren't stuck in one room or alley until the cube dropped.
But if you had the "no non-living things can pass" effect up, your progress can be stopped by an undead you can't push, or a pile of dead bodies.
With the "no living things can pass" effect you could be stopped by a shrubbery.
I can't believe those greedy writers nerfed my bag of beans' bright pink toads. Wotc has fallen
this but unironically
I like this video a lot, very nice to have these laid out. I also just like info dumps from creators like you! So thanks for this
The absolute patience of this man, i respect it. You had to research it all, record it all, edit it all, and this is just the first four _letters._ My god.
I threw the URL into a transcript AI for the LULs, and when I pasted the output into a document, it was roughly *30 pages.*
Lock of Jacob’s Hair (Artifact): this was the hair of a mortal man turned hero. Once on each of your turn you can speak a phrase of power: “big naturals” and any creature within a 30 foot radius starts screaming uncontrollably until the next dawn. They scream even while unconscious. Especially while unconscious.
What
I think the Dwarven Thrower specification is a nod to the Vox Machina campaign of Critical Role, since Matt Mercer specified that because Grog was so attuned with the Belt of Dwarvenkind for so long he could attune to the Dwarven Thrower.
Unlikely to have anything to do with Critical Role. It was just a logical change to make.
Dunno... 7:45 sounds fun. Losing the curse robs a bit of the fun from it.
Just homebrew it in if you want, making it a feature of the item was definitely weird im with Jacob
I had a player who actively sought the item out due to that curse, since they were an elf that wanted to become a dwarf (to be more like their adoptive family). Because elves can't grow beards, it was one of the few ways they could actually get one.
I like the Magic Action. It clarifies when a magic item has a passive effect (such as a bonus to AC, Saving Throws, or advantage on certain checks or skills) vs an effect you need to trigger or activate. I remember a few instances when the table was unsure if a command word was meant to use an action, bonus action, or free action for an effect that 8/10 times should require an action. Good change, and I’m glad you can’t action surge to use a magic item.
Except the Broom of Flying. Requiring a magic action to activate the one thing the broom is able to do is dumb and really limits your options in combat.
🖤🤍Memento mori, old friend 🤍🖤
Or worse the veterans cane which is a one time bonus action to turn it from a cane to a mundane short sword and nothing else
I dont really like this. If they would do more of a 3 action thing like pathfinder, I would like it better. Just naming different actions that basically use the same action kind of muddies the waters and confuses people. It was simpler they way it used to be and I thought that was what they were going for. Simple
Basically if they want to complicate things I wish they would do it more, maybe. I generally use DnD to introduce players to ttrpgs and then move to pathfinder, provided they want more from the system. Really I just miss 3rd and 3.5.
@@TheCourtKingslayer Glad to see another who remembers.
I was already half way through the video when I REALISED this only covers items from A-D! Holy shit, thats gonna be a lot work until he finishes every item😮
One notable change to Broom of Flying you didn't mention is that it now also requires attunement, which it didn't in 2014.
I appreciate the dedication to th editing. I don’t want to know how long it took to just book in slightly every time you said the item. Worth it
Damn, looking sharp Jacob!
I love this, please do the rest if you can! Super helpful to get a run down ahead of the monster manual release
23:30 Broom of Flying also requires attunement, now. It didn't before.

this is one of the best videos on your channel now
Now this is some top tier content.
It's not like the split between using the Magic or the Utilize action is a new thing, only that they tell you that they are different. In 2014 you had the choise between the Use an Object (from the PHB) and the Activate an Item (introduced in the DMG alongside a nerf to thief rogues) actions. Most people only reads the PHB and would not know the difference. Very good clarification in the new rules.
31:31
I knew Jacob would shorten his explanation eventually, but this was funny as hell
Great video! Looking forward to the rest of the series!
The Cauldron of Rebirth actually came from Tasha's, so no wonder it's awesome. Also, I too enjoy the simplicity of the new Cube of Force. And Defenders can be any melee weapon now? Sweet!
Another vicious detail about the Dust of Sneezing and Choking: it looks like Dust of Disappearance, and even tricks the Identify spell, so a party that finds it will very likely end up using it on themselves🤣🤧💀

Very helpful. I was gonna do this very thing when I get my copy, but now I don't have to. ❤
Excellent video to listen to while painting warhammer minis
Be careful @13:20, Nintendo has been real trigger happy lately. Lol
I used a 2014 cube of force once that I can recall in my entire D&D career. The dungeon master had a room filling up with toxic gases and my armorer artificer happened to have a cube of force built into his armor, so I had the whole party get within 15ft of me and I put up the barrier that blocks gasses and vapors. It was pretty awesome to be able to just shut down the trap that the GM had planned for us.
Hey Jacob, love the video, but a little bit disappointed by the sponsorship. The founder of AG (chris ashenden) is a convicted criminal here in NZ who scammed vulnerable people out of their life savings (right before moving onto AG). He also used bankruptcy to weasel out of paying back his victims.
Dietitians / medical professionals don’t really recommend the product either. You’re essentially paying $90 a month (yes, $90) for an enormous excess of vitamins, most of which get flushed out, and those that aren’t can cause health issues. not to mention their studies have some strange issues, but thats another rabbit hole.
i get how this might’ve been missed, just thought it was worth mentioning. Anyway, love your stuff
Great video, can we please get a short of every time Jacob said the Xanathars Guide line??? Would be hilarious
i have just now as i am pausing the video at 0:22 came up with a conspiracy completely unrelated to the video that Jacob is actually lobbying WotC to make it so you chose subclass at lvl 3 because otherwise his name doesn't make sense, and he always makes sure to say "oh it doesn't make sense that you chose ur patron or god at lvl 3 they should make it so you do it at lvl 1" like all those political pundits but secretly he is paying Jeremy Crawford and his cronies to get his way
Amazing work for this video! I bought the 2024 PHB because I didn't have the one from 2014, I do have the 2014 version of this but I'm wondering if I should buy the new one, the Bastions part is really convincing me
I’m keeping the curse that shit is hilarious like imagine seeing a dwarve with a mythical axe but then he sprouts hills and tentacles because he’s actually a sonic hybrid who looks like a dwarf

I think the caldron of rebirth was in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. You had to be either a warlock or druid to attune to it.
The brooch of shielding might be getting an indirect buff in 2024, since it seems like more non-specific damage sources are changing to force damage.
A handful of magic items and class features already reflect this change. Won't really know for sure until monster manual.

The changes to command word stuff is a minor buff as well since now you can use these items in silence areas :D
Jacob looking good and healthy
and Hungness
Yeah, looks like he’s slimmed down and looks healthy.
The Dust of Sneezing and Choking changes are a bit odd because late 2014/pre-2024 (monsters of the multiverse, etc) creatures specifically made a point of mentioning when something didnt need to breathe/sleep/etc with Unusual Nature trait.
THERE BETTER BE MORE PARTS FOR THIS
I remember that Grog used a Dwarven Thrower in C1. Matt let it happen because he was wearing the belt of dwarvenkind. Maybe they were inspired by that
This is what I wanted. Thank you for doing what I was too lazy to do
the best part of any dnd book
Good to see the book of exalted deeds specifying its effects become permanent rather than the weirdness that was after reading the book it teleports away (unattuning after some time as per attunement rules) but you keep all the effects so long as you do good deeds, that was such a weird thing that just wasn't explained very well.
From the green dragon preview of the Monster Manual 2025, they dont have frightful presence anymore!
The amulet of the planes is EVEN MORE POWERFUL
A game I was running had a tpk due to the bag of beans.
The player planted a bean when they were underground and watched as it created a pyramid, literally pulping the party into the stone wall 😂😂
We retconned it after 5 mins of laughter
Super helpful thanks!
How useful, i was just reading through both magic item lists for something fun to give my players
I also noticed that, with the change from drawing a playing card to a percentage roll, ALL of the “bad” outcome cards in the Deck of Many Things have a 1% chance each less of occurring than the good outcomes
The Book of Vile Darkness should be a part of Vecna's accoutrement. That makes total sense.
I feel like I should know what a "magic action" is going into this. And I've watched almost all of Jacob's videos on the new stuff, so I feel like I would have heard of it if he mentioned it.
26:32 Messed up a 2014/24 there, buddy. Typo-Man away! (Flies off)
Editing on this is already great. I would perhaps suggest for the future magic items videos perhaps making it more clear when you’re talking about 2014 and 2024 versions as it kind of got muddled here. Perhaps left side of the screen has 2014 content text only and right side has 2024 changes.
I loved the 2014 cube of force it was so busted in the best of ways.
Damn BoVD and BoED are magic items in 5e? Thats fun. Some of the most interesting and fun books in third edition. Edit: aww they removed disfigurement, that was a weird feat chain in third too.
Cube of Force is entirely different! It's not doing the same thing at all
