In this Mayonaise guitar lesson video series, I will show you how to play this great song by The Smashing Pumpkins in it's entirety.
To play "Mayonaise" like James Iha and Billy Corgan performed this on the original recording and live, you will definitely need two guitarists.
The tuning that James Iha is using is very unorthodox. That tuning is, starting from the 6th string, Eb Bb Bb Gb Bb D. This makes it an EbminMaj7 open tuning. Keep in mind that the 5th and 4th strings are in unison which means you tune the A string a half-step up to Bb and tune the D string down and major third to Bb.
Billy Corgan uses the more traditional Eb tuning, starting from the 6th string, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.
In the first video lesson, I will show you all of James Iha's guitar parts, since they are more crucial to the overall chord progressions.
The arpeggiated intro is beautiful and not overly challenging. When the strumming kicks in, there is a main chord shape that Iha is using for much of the song. It is this chord shape that is giving most of the chords in the progressions an add9 quality about them.
The strumming pattern also incorporates a lot of accents on the upbeats, which I will talk about in the lesson.
I will go through each section of the song in the order that they appear and will include the minute and second mark on the original recording each chord progression occurs so you won't get lost.
In the second video I will cover all of Billy Corgan's guitar parts including the solos.
The intro and outro solos played by Corgan contain some really nice melodic playing that is approachable by just about any upper beginner level player and above.
The main solo, played with a thick fuzz distortion and phaser pedal, is a little bit more involved technically, but still rather simple to play. It also fits the music beautifully.
The chords that Corgan uses are mostly power chords, allowing Iha to add the upper chord extensions. This makes Corgan's rhythm guitar parts a bit easier to play.
Once again, I will go through each of these sections of the song in the order that they appear on the original recording.
I hope you guys enjoy learning this masterpiece by The Smashing Pumpkins! #mayonaiseguitarlesson #smashingpumpkins #guitarcovers
Carl...
Mayonnaise is an instrument
Dude, that reference lol
omg it is lol I'm going to learn how to play mayonnaise
"Is mayonaise an instrument"
Horseradish is not an instrument either
Yes, an instrument. Of the culinary persuasion.
Sorry it's been so long everyone. I'm not all the way there yet but I feel good enough to get back into the swing of things! Thank you all for all your well wishes this last few weeks, it really means a lot. Hope you like lesson! Cheers!
Internet needs you Carl!
Good to see you man! You were in my prayers 🙏🏻
What happened? So sorry to hear and hope you are trending in the right direction
Just happy you’re back :)
I'm thankful that you are back Carl! I hope the hearing issues improve.
how does one even initially decide to tune a guitar like that?...dont get me wrong, they're some of the most beautiful chords ever
I made my own weird tuning off of sound alone, and ease of chord use, a lot of tunings are made because certain songs are easier to play, like this one for instance. another reason is for fun.
God I remember trying to learn this by ear (in standard tuning) back in 93’ when I was 16! No wonder it never worked out that well! Thanks for another great lesson Carl!
I was just trying now and wondered the same! haha
Weird flex but ok
@@JD-ch1wo Not sure who you’re talking to but ok
For real! Some times I felt like I was going insane trying. No internet back then!
"In the first video lesson, I will show you all of James Iha's guitar parts, since they are more crucial to the overall chord progressions." BC would have a heart-attack if he saw this.
Ah yes, the ever inflated ego of billy corgan
This is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Truly a masterpiece 🙏💜👌✨
I've always thought that the guitar leads in this song is what a meteor shower would sound like if they made sounds.
Siamese Dream is such a great album!
Nice choice Carl.
Intro recap 6:24, Chorus recap 13:56, variation verse recap 15:49, solo chords 17:20, 18:07 acoustic build up, 18:57 end variation

7:15-7:47
quite simply the greatest ever Smashing Pumpkins song, it's so beautiful. i have so many memories tied up with Siamese Dream, i look back on those days and i'm so thankful i got to live through it. like another poster said somewhere below - i tried to learn this by ear back then in standard tuning, not surprising i never got very far! thanks for this video :-)
One of the greatest songs ever written, always wanted to learn Iha's part thanks for this!
Cuz you're are the best guitar teacher
No one has taught the full song with seperate things of the two guitarists
Glad to have u back!! This easily became my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs after seeing them play it live last month...thank u for this lesson. Couldn't find any good lessons for it til now
Driving with my son the other day he picked Siamese Dream instead of Gish and I've been
Iistening to Mayonnaise on repeat ever since! I'm so stoked to find this tutorial! Thank you!
Omg!!!!! Finally
No lessons for this on you tube
Favorite pumpkins song of all time
Heart broken in the 90's anyone??
In tears just hearing this tutorial!!
Hope your hearing is better. Wanted to throw out a request. The boys are back by Thin Lizzie. Classic rock!
More Thin Lizzy would be amazing.
I’m so glad you’re back and I really hope that your hearing is getting good better.
Yes, I have waited for this for awhile.
Yesss! I've always wanted Carl's take on this one!
This is an amazing lesson! doesn't get old
Glad to see you’re getting better, love your lessons!
Great explanation on James tuning. I always wondered what tuning he used.
Maxshade7 i always just play it in Eb standard. Sounds exactly like the record but the fingering is a little weirder but it works
Hope you feel better. I've been waiting on this one for a long time! Thank you so much!
I've always wanted to learn this song! Thanks Carl
Good to see the channel is back up I was looking for this video 4 days ago confused why I couldn’t find it but glad to see things are cleared up
I just heard this song for the first time the other day from the last episode of Beef. What a beautiful song!!!
Do smashing pumpkins soma next THANK YOU
It’s B major e major and then g. For the fuzz part it’s a c g and f
Glad to see you back Carl, hope you are feeling better now
They ran the Fuzz pedals into input 2 on the Marshall head instead of input 1 because input 1 sounded horrible with fuzz, then they turned the master volume on the amp to 10 and used the gain knob on the amp for volume
Great to see you’re doing better!
Hope you feel better Carl, best wishes for you, your lessons are awsome!!! Greettingss from Mexico!!!
I love this song and I've been wanting to learn it for so long! You're the best Carl!
Been waiting for a real mayonnaise lesson video for years thanks
So good to have you back Carl!!
Hi Carl, I'm glad that you're getting there! Having issues with your hearing isn't funny at all, hope you rest up soon mate! May I request when you are feeling better that you do a lesson on 'where the streets have no name' by U2, I noticed you covers the riff, but a full lesson would be amazing! Thanks Benj
Glad to see you back at it!
This song is beautiful.
Amazing sounding chords....
Thanks for breaking down the tuning in detail
Ty! Very accurate transcription, will start playing IMMEDIATELY 🤩
You are definitely smashing bro! Always wanted to see a definitive tutorial of this song! Cheers to you mate!
Glad your feeling better Carl and thank you for all your excellent lessons!
Happy to hear you are feeling better. Thanks for the great lessons as usual
Glad to see you're back. Hope you are well. This is probably my favorite Pumpkins song but that tuning is just a lot to get involved with. I will give it a shot eventually though. Thanks
Hey Carl, great to see you back. Best wishes!
this helped so much! one of my favorite songs. thank you so much
Great to see u back Carl James is such a awesome player big thanks !
Thanks for the lesson and the information on the squeal part. I always figured that was natural harmonics played across the strings.
The day that never comes , glad to see you again
great to have you back carl. happy your hearing is improving :)
Glad to see you back! I hope all is doing well for you. Excellent song for your return!
By far one of my favorite songs to play!!
Welcome back Carl. Hope you are feeling better. Best wishes from all your fans in India :)
Glad to see you back!
Thanks so much Carl, for Mayonaise , now it's definitely, you get the money, not Guitar Tricks, when I think about it, it's you who taught me to play the guitar, I'm 60 years old and started 3 years ago. Never too late. Plays easy Led Zeppelin songs in a local band. How about teaching us Dancing Days Led Zeppelin. All the best from Norway.
I'm 45 now and began three years ago with Carl. :)
Love the vid, love the channel man.
"My On-ness", love it. Thanks a lot.
Yes finally a good tutorial on this song.. Thank you!
Once again, another great lesson. Thank you Carl.
Holy crap, I was thinking like two days ago that it would be real neat if there was a Mayonaise lesson online. Cheers.
THANK YOU IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE ❤️❤️❤️❤️
glad to have you back carl
Thanks so much man! This is one of my favorite songs of all time :)
This one takes me back.
Great tutorial! Always loved this song!
Good stuff Carl glad to hear your on the mend
in fact, at 7:15 you should play these two chords like an Emaj (shuting down the 6th string with your thumb) and then slide to the fitfh fret, this is how James play it. You're welcome. Thank you for the good lesson.
Undertow by Marty Friedman? Good to have you back
Glad you're back!! Please do Luna by the Smashing Pumpkins!!! Thanks!!!!
Good to see you back Carl
Yes! Thanks💗 more Smashing Pumpkins, please
My friend your back, take your time with the lessons
Thank you so much carl! I love this song a lot
the enjoyment when he kicked in the distorsion :))
Greetings and well wishes from South Australia mate
.woaw... I've been watching these videos for years. carl is just as much of an influence as any of my rockstar idols. be well brother, take care of your health
As the A and D are tuned the same, you can just fret the 2nd on the D along with the 1st on the G for the 2nd shape of the intro...
Great job! You are a great teacher!
you're perfect!!! thank you so much! and you explain so well !!
Hey Carl glad your feeling better, RUclips guitar tutorials wouldn’t be the same without you (I personally think you make the best tutorials on RUclips) but I do have a request if you could work some of your magic on a tutorial for “I can’t quit you baby” by Led Zeppelin that would be amazing!
great lesson thank you. i’ve found that you can smash some 5th fret harmonics to try and recreate the squeal if you mess around with it for a while
We're all very happy to see you well and happy rocking that eric johnson strat! I don't want to ask for a song request because I know you're still having a bit of trouble with your ears......but Disciples of the Watch and Peace Sells would be nice!
Back then, the way I played it was using a capo on the 4th fret. Worked great. Now, since I acquired a Digitech DT Whammy, I no longer need the capo. I set the DT up to "3". Therefore I don't lose any fretboard from the capo.
@U-rok when you used the capo what tuning did you use? Does it make the same sounds or any eaiser to play?
@@spiderslayer1998 I think it’s standard tuning. As far as I can remember, it played pretty solidly with the capo. I got the tip from the “Siamese Dream” tab book.
Great to see you again 😃
UR BACK!!!! HELL YEAH!!!
I’m digging that distortion
Finally, I love you carl!!!
broke my strings trying to get to this tuning using the fender app i’m a amateur guitar player any tips on how to find the tuning? any help/tips much appreciated
Use lighter strings that can tune higher on the A
Guitar tabs app
Holy shit I love you for this lesson thanks man great shit!
Great video! There's some out there that have some of the wrong notes. The Pumpkins always have odd tuning, thanks for that!
Would you be able to cover more smashing pumpkins? Maybe “Here is No Why” or “Soma”?
Since the A and D strings are tuned the same, it might be easier to make that main min9 chord form using the ring finger on the D string rather than the A. I find its easier to mute the A with the middle finger and my fingers are less jumbled up...just a thought!
Carl jest came across this page . what happened to you I followed you for a long time love how you teach us and appreciate you.
Thanks Carl !!
I'm a noob when it comes to music theory so I have a question that is hopefully not a stupid one....
Would James Iha already be familiar enough with this unusual tuning to write his part in it or would he have chosen voicings for the melody and chords and sort of reverse engineered things to come up with that tuning?
Can’t speak for James but generally you use alternative tunings so that you can make up a part WITHOUT knowing what you’re doing. It can help you break out of patterns or find inspiration when you’re blocked. Later on you could figure out what the heck it was you just wrote.
I have purposely altered the tuning once or twice to suit a voicing or an arpeggio I was struggling with but that’s wayyyy more rare and much less fun.
great to see you back man! what about some rory gallagher? would anybody be into that?
Welcome back Sir!!! Hope u r ok now..
I waited for that, thanks !
i was excited to learn the song, then he explained the tuning.. oh well maybe someday
haha, same here.
Same here, which was the point of watching the video, too bad !
So just change your tuning?
What’s the issue
you can play it in D# tuning, half step down! Search the tabs!
I used an app to help me tune for this, but the strumming is the most difficult part for me since I can't fit my fingers without causing bad sounds.
Weird tuning but the chords used in this song is really beautiful
Awesome lesson.
Carl is there any chance too see on your chanel lesson for Gary Moore - The Loner? I'm glad you are back, and i hope you will be teaching us many many great songs in the years to come :)
I just can say... THANK YOU!!!
