Some of my friends and I actually did this in Southern California decades ago in the 70s. Only ours were two ten speed bikes welded together and we rode on full size abandoned tracks. Eventually we powered the unit with a 5hp motor with a platform between the rails to ride on. It carried 2 to 4 people and we sat in lawn chairs while riding. I still have photos of this. This is the first time I have ever seen anyone else do anything like it.
@@Shallcross That's what I tell my students. I have photos of us on the tracks in Southern California. We used to ride two sets of rails. One abandoned and one active. The active one was privately owned and we knew the track maintainer crew so we had the run schedule.
Congratulations!! your story touched me in several ways. First of all because it gives me hope, you are the living proof that tours and cruises are not the only option for retired people, second: you've linked two places of the world I love: Patagonia (where I traveled several times) and Portland (some of you came from there) a city I love and enjoyed, and finally because your adventure is like a tribute to friendship among you and with environment, human as well as natural. My regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A "railbike" is something that I imagined and drew pictures of, when I was a little kid. I thought it was my own invention! I'm so happy to see it as a real thing. Great fun, a great adventure, and a great video. Cheers!
We used rail bikes to move around on a large underground mine in the 1970's. They were small bicycles on 4 aluminium wheels. No brakes, banana seats. But, the rail was only 24 inch gauge.

Watching your movie brought up many memories from riding the line in the late 1980ties from Esquel for the whole length including a three course meal in the diner and running out of coal to heat our coach. Also, an engine break-down let to many hours of delay. The strong but cold winds I could feel again ...
