First of all because it gives me hope, you are the living proof that tours and cruises are not the only option for retired people, second: you've linked two places of the world I love: Patagonia (where I traveled several times) and Portland (some of you came from there) a city I love and enjoyed, and finally because your adventure is like a tribute to friendship among you and with environment, human as well as natural. the best travel show on the tube. i BECAME ADDICTED TO THE SCREEN. I felt frightened , elated. excited. emotional. you are certainly a great group of men. I am 82 years and in my younger life i formed and ran a touring cycling club and during my cycling years pedled over 26,000 miles. I last rode a bike 10 years ago in Scotland along disused railway trackbeds. but it became to much so had to stop. You are an inspiration to all who view this. thankyou very much.
I'm sixty six and I 'actually' thought I was doing something special because 'maybe' twice a week I ride twenty six miles on a paved bike trail. Still, I enjoy it. The trail was made from an old railway which was paved over. Plans are to lengthen the NY trail but I'm told no camping will be allowed.
3deeguy you are doing something special. I just turned 32, but after having stage four cancer, my heart has a hard time. Keep up the fun while you can! That sucks about the no camping!

A "railbike" is something that I imagined and drew pictures of, when I was a little kid. I thought it was my own invention! I'm so happy to see it as a real thing. Great fun, a great adventure, and a great video. Cheers!
We used rail bikes to move around on a large underground mine in the 1970's. They were small bicycles on 4 aluminium wheels. No brakes, banana seats. But, the rail was only 24 inch gauge.

What a thoroughly enjoyable experience watching that was! Took me a lot more 25 minutes to get through it - there were so many amazing views, from the video and the stills, that I had to keep going back and pausing it to take a longer look. Stunning!

Thank you. Watching your movie brought up many memories from riding the line in the late 1980ties from Esquel for the whole length including a three course meal in the diner and running out of coal to heat our coach. Also, an engine break-down let to many hours of delay. The strong but cold winds I could feel again ... I spend all stops outside on the ground trying to collect wood in order to keep a fire going in the coach's oven. And the sun-set looked just like in your movie.
What an adventure. Thanks for sharing. The amateur cameras did not detract from the wonderful story! The people you met seemed so kind. I'm sure you guys were such a curiosity.
What a fascinating trip! Four old friends embarked themselves in a very challenging and unparalleled trip not for the faint of heart, as most of it ran at elevations way higher than 3,000 ft. The sightseeings are so peaceful and the locals just amazingly friendly. I enjoyed watching this video so much!

This has got to be one of the best and interesting adventures on Utube that I have seen. We need more of these trips and adventures to watch. Than you for sharing.
Some of my friends and I actually did this in Southern California decades ago in the 70s. Only ours were two ten speed bikes welded together and we rode on full size abandoned tracks. Eventually we powered the unit with a 5hp motor with a platform between the rails to ride on. It carried 2 to 4 people and we sat in lawn chairs while riding. I still have photos of this. This is the first time I have ever seen anyone else do anything like it.
@@Shallcross That's what I tell my students. I have photos of us on the tracks in Southern California. We used to ride two sets of rails. One abandoned and one active. The active one was privately owned and we knew the track maintainer crew so we had the run schedule.
Superb. I watched every minute. I would have jumped at the chance to do such an amazing adventure. I did not even know railbiking was a thing! I laughed at the suitcase until I saw it in action. As a lifelong backpacker, I would do it that way too. HD makes everything so much more relatable. Patagonia - what a place. Thank You.

What a wonderful adventure! If I didn't know better, I'd say you were in New Mexico where I live. The terrain, especially past El Maiten, is so similar, and the old adobe buildings look so familiar. The wind and storms are the same, too. However, I don't see gauchos tending their herds and flocks around here. Thank you so much for sharing with us. What wonderful memories you must have.

Waxman Real adventure is not always fun, easy, etc. But you never forget it, and always have the sense of accomplishment. Some people don’t need that. Others have a inner drive for that. I admire the fact that 4 guys all we’re adventurous enough to do it. I always had friends through out my life, that never had an adventurous spirit in them. So I was always stuck doing mine alone.
@Waxman The wind was certainly blowing hard. I wonder how much time they spent pedaling against the wind vs with the wind? I think it would have been nearly improbable to finish this ride if the majority of the distance was pedaling against the wind.

What a wonderful adventure! If I didn't know better, I'd say you were in New Mexico where I live. The terrain, especially past El Maiten, is so similar, and the old adobe buildings look so familiar. The wind and storms are the same, too. However, I don't see gauchos tending their herds and flocks around here. Thank you so much for sharing with us. What wonderful memories you must have.

A fabulous record of a wonderful adventure. I have recently shown this to my cycling buddies and we are taking inspiration to undertake our own. Brilliantly filmed and edited too.
Loved everything about this video, the pace, the humble commentary, the adventure and of course the scenery.
A much better way to spend retirement than sitting on my duff at a computer most of the day.

@@Howrider65 And me......though I excuse myself with a wife to look after since her stroke stopped her from looking after me. At 73 still on track to try the world squash champs for the over 90's ( if there is such a thing in 17 years time ......or the cancer doesn't chew me up before.)

Waxman Real adventure is not always fun, easy, etc. But you never forget it, and always have the sense of accomplishment. Some people don’t need that. Others have a inner drive for that. I admire the fact that 4 guys all we’re adventurous enough to do it. I always had friends through out my life, that never had an adventurous spirit in them. So I was always stuck doing mine alone.
@Waxman The wind was certainly blowing hard. I wonder how much time they spent pedaling against the wind vs with the wind? I think it would have been nearly improbable to finish this ride if the majority of the distance was pedaling against the wind.
