Your videos are very calm, entertaining and super educational. Just got your video on my feed the other day and I’ve now watched several. I’ve fixed stuff for awhile and wanted to get into PS5 repair. Your videos are eye openers and you’re very methodical and logical in your repair process. Thank you and hopefully you get a million subscribers soon.
That SB made it difficult but job well done in the end. I am not commenting so much now as I do not have much time to watch all my subs. I am catching up but at a very slow pace. Thank you for sharing.
@ToltecMerc I’ve been watching a lot of your videos lately and I must say they are very educational and entertaining! I was wondering if this is solely a hobby or if you make a living fixing gaming systems for folks? And if the latter, how would one go about sending one in?
Honestly, it's just a hobby for me. Every now and again I will fix one for subscribers of the channel. I have a full time job so it often comes down to how much free time I have.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing. I’ve got one in the same situation, can see some balls bridged from someone’s previous attempt so this is perfect timing. What size solder balls did you use?
Great Repair and Video! I've watched several of your videos, and you don't seem to remove any solder mask when you're wicking BGA IC's or board pads. If you don't mind me asking, what's your technique? The only good thing about merged solder balls, is more experience. Thank You.
I try to be very gentle when wicking pads but I still occasionally damage solder mask. Lots of flux helps. Very light pressure and don't get in a hurry. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey sir, I watched a good amount of your videos over the past day after discovering your page while searching for a resolution to an issue I am having with my PS5...beeps and then does not boot. I saw you commented to another person here that you do this for a hobby. I am in a bit of a bind and would greatly prefer to send you my system and pay your for your time if you were so willing, but if that is not an option, I would love to consult you a bit if that would be possible and give this a go myself (not my preferred option). As of now, the system has never been opened and the tamper seal is in place. I sent you an email. Either way, I've become a subscriber. Thank you for your time and the videos, your skill and knowledge is appreciated.
I don't mind hand reballing from time to time. I feel like I get better results somehow. Sony has had trouble with these South Bridge chips since the PS4. They are simply not reliable. Thanks for stopping by.
Good job on the tweezer golf m8. 400 holes in one 🤣. What Temps are you using on your hot air to flow the balls after reballing, and to put the Southbridge back on?
I flow the balls onto the chip with 400C at an airflow of 30 on my Quick 861DW. If I'm installing a chip with leaded solder balls and using the pre-heater, I might use 375C with max airflow from above. The part should settle into place rather quickly. Thanks for watching!
Good job. Another console rescued. Just out of interest, why do you reball the chip, instead of putting the solder balls onto the motherboard? I would have thought that reballing the motherboard would be less stressful on the chip as it doesn't have to be heated to high temps so often.
Did you verify should there be 5v voltage on disc drive connector? I’ve got one case where the ps5 won’t boot with disc drive plugged in and there is no 5v on the connector. Originally the ps5 had shorted SB and the LAN magnet IC.
Brilliant work sir. I noticed when you nudged the south ridge the first time it lifted on the nudged side and probably dipped on the other side squeezing the balls together. Pardon the pun!
With all due respect, you will not learn much from Northridge. ToltecMerc is surgeon for him. LearnElectronicsRepair and Electronics Repair School also good channels that almost never post 2 times the same thing.
Our PS5 has the very same issue, out of the blew, after hardly 2 years. Sony only offers one year warrantee which is ridiculous, so if I want Sony to fix it I have to pay an additional 270 euro. Then they either will fix it or send a refurbished one back. What do you think about that? Is it worth it? It's also suspicious that this happens a lot.
@@ToltecMerc if you’ve a Email set up can that be provided? I’m in Atlanta Georgia and in need of a repair done on a ps5 I have if not possible I’ll just wait

That's very kind of you! Welcome aboard! Hopefully, I can continue with more of the same content.
The amount of patience you have amazes me :)...the sigh when you found the two merged solder balls, knowing you have to start over.
It happens. I just have to deal with it and keep pushing through. Thanks for watching!
Those BGA chips look tricky to solder, I have never tried to solder one myself. Good to see another PS5 saved.
They can be tough. I still make mistakes every now and then but I learn a little each time. Thanks for watching!
Great work with another nightmare manually reball job
Thank you! I'll be using my stencil in the future.

I really should reball with leaded before installing these SB. It would make life easier. Thanks for stopping by!
Love the vids. And using a $700 multimeter is one huge flex. Lol. Keep it up!
Thanks! I didn't pay $700 for it. I think I paid $250. It had a bad display. Replaced that and it's all good. I got it from Ben Heck.
@@ToltecMerc It looks mighty nice.

Hi .What solder ball are you using for the south bridge? There is no voltage on the RT5126 integrated circuit.
I believe they are .45mm. If you have no voltage at the RT5126, you probably have a blown fuse. There should be at least 5V, 3.3V and 1.15V.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing. I’ve got one in the same situation, can see some balls bridged from someone’s previous attempt so this is perfect timing. What size solder balls did you use?
Thank you for watching and commenting. I use .45mm.
Great patience, but why don't you use universal stencil , to reball SB? You can hide unneeded holes by metal tape. You can save much of your time !
I actually have the proper stencil but I had forgotten that I had bought it. I'll be using a stencil going forward.
It can happen, that stencil hole is one size, but you have solder balls of larger size that can finish job. Then you cannot use stencil.

Do you find reballing therapeutic? What do you suspect is causing these south bridge failures? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I'm sure you could reball the board but I don't know that it would be easier. I have done that with some smaller ICs but nothing with this many balls.
Good job mate 👍
Thanks 👍
What temp do you end up on with the preheater when removing a southbridge?
I usually stop with the preheater in the 200-220C range. Of course the board temp is much lower. I try to get the board to 100-110C.
I have a PS5. There is no sound or light or response. There is no voltage other than 12 v. Do you think the problem could be in the South bridge?
It is possible. It could also be a short somewhere. You should connect a 12V supply and watch the current draw.
Tough job but well done, what size ball are you using, 0.45?
Thanks! Correct, .45mm.
Hi! As always super. But I would use much less flux when soldering bga, then the balls would not stick together.
Thank you! I will give it a try.
very good job
Thank you so much 😀
Hi sir where can i get chip bridge from in usa
You could try www.injuredgadgets.com or sourcelyplus.com/
When you are saying 12v and half amp are you talking about 0.500A?
Yes. 0.5A or 500 milliamp
Did you verify should there be 5v voltage on disc drive connector? I’ve got one case where the ps5 won’t boot with disc drive plugged in and there is no 5v on the connector. Originally the ps5 had shorted SB and the LAN magnet IC.
@pelikonsolienkorjaus5846 Just verified, those 5V are NOT there until switched on. Only 12V is present on that drive connector in shutdown state.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊

Probably so. I've done that before when recording videos. The camera makes me nervous.

Hi what dc powersupply do you use
Siglent SPD-3303X
Mine had the same problem, now it’s in the repair shop
Seems to be a common one on the Ps5.. i figured you have a stencil by now!
I have one but I had forgotten that I had bought it along with several other PS5 stencils.
Damn.. That multimeter look expensive
It is if you buy brand new. I bought it broken off eBay and replaced the bad display.

Yes, I watch Northridge fix.

That pre heater your using is banned in the uk as its flagged as dangerous. reason being it aint earthed.
I should probably check the chassis of mine but I have not had any issues as of yet.

Less than 12 months old and already failed, and that is most likely the board they will use in the Slim as it's now 6nm.
Quality is shocking in 2023.
The quality does seem poor, however, I only see broken consoles so my view could be skewed. Thanks for visiting!
In all fairness, there is a lot there for the price. Especially when considering the price of everything else these days. Have you seen PC prices?
