Thanks for your efforts along with Sean and everyone in TOADS.
Our pleasure, we are having fun. I'm actually going to try and radio with it tonight.
This is more interesting to me than another walk through of the unit. Thanks a million
Thanks!
Fun video and a fascinating bit of kit. The moment when it starts back up -- that's the real drama moment there.
There may or may not have been a drama moment before that also...
cool video Steve! It sure went back together much faster than it came apart! HIHI!
Ya know, once I knew what I was doing...
I have taken several radios apart and that one was quite interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it, I'm a big fan!
I was expecting it to have some kind of “got ya” to make it impossible to put back together in the original case. Looked pretty straight forward. Thanks for the teardown TO
easier than an iPhone... that's for sure.
You're a brave man Steve. Wow... so cool to see the innards of this rig. I'm not sure I would feel confident enough to every tear mine down, but possibly once a replacement speaker is discovered that will work with the radio and have better fidelity, I might refer back to this video! Thank you for doing this for the rest of us! It gives great insight as to how the radio was designed! 73 OM //KK0DJ
Thanks DJ! It was fun.
Anyone else's stomach go in knots when the knob prying began? This is so nerve wracking and suspenseful! Good job!!
Mine did. I wasn't even sure that was how they were mounted!
Didn’t expect to see an open optical encoder. Interesting. Thanks for the teardown.
That kinda startled me as well.. I saw that and I thought WTF is that thing!?
I think we can do some software work on the speed of the spin and improve the "feel" of the VFO. I'm a long way away from that though. Easier to put some lead weights in the back of the knob for now.
Nice! Thank you!
Any time!
Outstanding breakdown of this Radio!!! Well worth Watching !!!👍🏻👍🏻✍🏻🤨
Glad you enjoyed it Fernando!
You are becoming the go-to guy for the 6100 :-)
Good show getting root. I have a 5105 and plan on
grabbing a 6100 if your reviews remain positive...
I have a 5105 here to compare to and I'll have a video out on that. Right now if you didn't already have a
Watched this four times now. Thankee serious for taking the chance to debuild this for us who are reluctant. Especially after watching your battery warning video. Now, at least, we know the batteries can be (a) replaced (especially that damn ‘bios’ battery and/or (b) removed for them like me who fear the batts going postal on us. Another great run thru. Again, thanks. 73 de W8IJN
You got it!
Nice work!
Thanks!
It is great to see that when the time comes, with a bit of care, we should be able to replace the internal batteries ourselves. As others have said, thanks for doing this tear-down , so we don't have to ;-) Cheers de VE3WMB
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped!
@@temporarilyofflineI would like to see a battery replacement video in the future! I know you are probably busy with the x6200 now 😁👍
@@markw.4679 Hey Mark - I don't know of a source for the batteries (because I haven't looked) - but replacement is super easy - remove the back case, disconnect the battery, insert new battery and connect... put on back case again.
Like as Jack the Ripper work. Well done. Thank you, 73!
I was worried I might not get ot back together at first. All good now.
Thanks for tearing apart! For my taste, too many holes for water, dust and insect ingress. But there are other expensive rigs on the market with the same problem.
yeah, I don't see this as a rugged/waterproof radio... just a fun toy.
RA9N Very good radio, I plan to purchase. Cool video, see you on the air!
Hope to get you in the log!
This is solid! So perhaps a battery swap can be done here without too much trouble. Is there any chance you can measure the battery dimensions? Thanks for this awesome content!
Yes, a battery swap should be fairly easy. Next time I'm at the radio I'll get some measurements.
Holy Crap! I would have never done that... and now I don't have to... thanks!
Hey Bob! Hams Helping Hams, right? These devices get more and more packed in with every generation.
I returned my X6100 for an icom 705 and it pissed me off; It almost is a good radio almost. I returned it when i discovered the spurious emissions it produces were so strong it made an AM radio buzz 10 feet away.
The 705 is a better/more polished radio for sure.
Steve, first thanks for the video. Have you any idea if the boards have had a revision until now?
I'm sure they have, but I don't know personally. Check in the X6100 rooms in the discord.
Wow so interesting do you think it is good quality . Would have liked hearing you describe the whole process although the music was funky - Thanks you are fearless .Andreas
If I was describing it, I'd have to mark it Not Safe For Kids ;-)
I see a STM32F4 low power on the base unit, and an Allwinner R16 dev board on the display unit. Interesting.
Looks like it should be easy to repair too.
yeah, not to bad, too bad its mostly SMT
Like several others, I admire your expertise and courage. 73, N7SR
Thanks!
I was thinking, at least he's not going to take the knobs off. Nope. Tear down is a tear down
you have to remove those 3 knobs to get the display board off so you can see the CPU/SoC
Aloha Steve! You’re a Brave man!
I rather go back into Vietnam again than to do what you did in this video, it was amazing!
Next time I have anything that absolutely needs taken apart, I am going to mail it to your house, lol!
Todd WH6DWF
Thanks Todd! It wasn't the easiest thing in the world to tear down, but I wanted to get the pictures out and the video made to share.
@K O Vietnam changes every time I go back. First it was pallets of block and each store and neighbor were required to lay down the blocks for side walks and streets or pay someone to do it. Then there were pagers, that was a big deal even though we already had cell phones here in the states. Now Vietnam has casinos at Cape St. Jacques. The people there will do everything they can to protect you and to show their love for Americans. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Brave man! You now have more on-hands experience than even Xiegu engineers! :P Did you modify the main tuning knob so that it didn't do what was reported by Dude in one of his reviews? 73, KF6IF
Yes, you just need to loosen the alan screw, slide the knob up a fraction and tighten it back down. I don't know why the foam is there.
Steve, the wifi Antenna's which side were they? because if that cut-out opening on the side would give the antenna's signal a way to pick up your house's wifi if you know what I mean.
The wifi antennas are on the cut out side, yes
You have probably figured it out by now but the sticker allows the wifi and Bluetooth signals in.out of the radio. The all metal case would prohibit the signals.
Yeah, I still think it needs a better wifi antenna setup and we created some 3d printed end plates to get started down that path.
TO thanks for another great video like always the breakdown is really appreciated . I have to ask what your thoughts are on overall build quality looking at the circuitry. I understand the release with missing features leaves a lot to desire from the company . I am trying to talk my self out of sending it back and realize the potential of a Linux kernel and can see custom OS created by Linux gurus in near future. Thank you.
I've been trying to figure out where this stands in the lineup of radios - if I was going to buy a ~$600 QRP radio... would this be it? What is the competition in this range with these features, etc... I'm not yet clear on that, been sidetracked with hacking it.
This is an amazing and we'll thought out comment and I couldn't put into words before what you just said.
@@temporarilyoffline I was stuck in this exact situation at the beginning of March and come to the same conclusion. I got my General upgrade on the 5th and wanted a radio, but had my heart set on the TX-500. I had put a little back but only about half way there when they suddenly became unubtainium. The same thing happened to me with the TH-D74A when I got my Tech. But, I did have enough put back to get the X6100 and they were in stock. So I pounced. So far, I like it a lot, but would still buy a TX-500 if they ever come back on the market. I did also get my TH-D74A second-hand months after giving up that hunt for a steal. So, you never know...
Anyway, a great comment and great analysis.
KI5PDK, 73
Thus radio keeps getting better too
Dois pontos que poderiam ser substituidos: O alto falante por um de melhor qualidade mantendo as dimensões e o conector de antena, colocando uma femea do pl-259 amphenol.
Good ideas!
@@temporarilyoffline teria que verificar um alto falante nas mesmas dimensões de algum outro equipamento. Não sei se este que está no Xiegu é de 8 ohms ou 4 ohms.
It only counts if you can turn it back on again after you're done. GG
Maybe...
How thick is the aluminum that runs through the center of the unit? Would an additional heat sink on the rear panel help with heat build up in your opinion? Or is it not really an issue?
I'd estimate the center slab to be 1/4" thick. Something happened with a recent firmware update and the heat doesn't appear to be an issue anymore. I bought some heat sinks and setup for a before/after test and it wasn't hot enough to matter anymore.
Are you refering to this 1.1.7 here? @@temporarilyoffline
Mine will not keep date/time settings so im thinking the back up battery is not connected, I of course dont want to tear it apart to check as ive only had it 2 days but do i send it back for a replacement because of this minor issue as I'm having fun with it so far. It does bode the question that there may be other issues ive not come across as yet though.
My radio's clock seems to loose time also, and I know my battery is connected!
Did you have any screws left over?? 😁
No, but maybe a unit or 2 of smoke.
Colleague tell me on what processor is it assembled? How is the analog digital converter used?
It is based on an AllWinner R16 processor and I believe the AD is software based on an STM32 processor.
Love to see a software breakdown with that ARM processor it has to be running something like LINUX
It's running 'buildroot' and busy box. I've got it rooted and I'm running raspberry pi os on it now. Lot's of other videos on my channel about it.
So could you run WSJT X and assign it to a function button? That would be neat to be able to run other stuff on your radio
@@chrisrose01 What I'm hoping to do is have multiple virtual screens - screen 1 is radio, screen 2 is WSJT-X, screen 3 is your logging program or whatever.
@@chrisrose01 yep
Where is the internal microphone?
Lower left of the VFO
Hello Steve, would it be possible to remove the internal batteries to just use external only?
Thanks and 73's
I bet it would. There is a JST type plug if I remember right. There is even a metal plate between the batteries and the rest of the radio so it might not even look that bad.
Sounds good, I'm just more so worried of internal batteries exploding ruining the radio. Thanks for your reply!
@@DigiScenes right after the warranty is up...
I have problem with probably blown PA, have you any idea how to fix this?
Check in on the TOADs discord. I think two people have run into this problem and fixed it. (Link in description) is it past warranty?
@@temporarilyoffline checked, saw there sth about final FET, shame that there is no service manual released by Xiegu.
I can’t believe how they creases the flex cable😳😣. That thing is gonna fail in short time. Never crease then always roll around a curved object
Right!
An optical rotary encoder ? Looks like the setup like an old ball mouse uses.
You got it!
You should look to add a watermark to the videos maybe or include callsign or something on the cutting board to stop people using it as their own. I found one of Josh's recently that someone had dubbed a translation over, seemed a little dodgy that people would do that
Thanks for the tip @Dan
Any spare screws afterwards?
Just the loose screw I started this project with.
Since I'm not terribly upset that the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth aren't usable at the moment, I think my biggest disappointment with this radio is the battery. 8.4 volts at 3Ah isn't of much use to me. With a bit of massaging of that back cover I "might" be able to fit three 5Ah Ring doorbell batteries in there though..... Bob, W0BNC.
Hello Bob, I was able to got 3 hours of FT8 usage out of my internal battery, I had to wear the battery out during the last firmware update. If you're looking out for more power, check this out: www.thingiverse.com/thing:5240290
@@temporarilyoffline hmm, maybe I'm not giving it it's due. I guess I'll have to try it and see how it goes. I've made a few extra batteries for my KX2 from 5Ah Ring doorbell backup batteries. They would almost fit inside the 6100, but not quite. Thanks again for the teardown video, I enjoyed it.
Is that RTC battery rechargeable or replaceable?
It looks like it's replaceable. (But only by voiding the warranty sticker)
@@temporarilyoffline well considering the courts have ruled that removal of the sticker itself is insufficient to void a warranty contract, I'm not too concerned. Not that that's likely to matter with a Chinese product anyway. I'm just happy I don't need to deal with soldering it inside the radio when the time comes. I've done it with Nintendo DS cartridges and it wasn't fun.
Re-read my message 🤣 "voiding the warranty sticker" -- meaning cutting the sticker, not "voiding the warranty" - I was being very subtle.
Does this qrp have a service manual for maintenance and alignment?
No it doesn't
@@temporarilyoffline so who can service this radio?
@@emanoeldeoliveira8943 you can get it serviced by the manufacturer or you can join us on TOADs discord and have fun re-engineering it.
@@temporarilyoffline $650 for no concert? complicated.
Concert?
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks
Does this radio do 2m / 70cm ? just curious...
Nope, I don't think it has the transistors for it.
@@temporarilyoffline
Aah ok, thanks.
What do the ball bearings do ? - Thanks
When you move the legs, you can feel the "stop", that's the ball bearing at work
I think you voided the warranty...
warranty??
First comment! :D
