    In this video, we take a look at some of the purpose-built Chrysler Legendary Factory Lightweight Drag Racing Warriors from the 1960s.
    In the 1960s, US auto makers were in a horsepower and go-fast arms race to score drag racing victories at tracks across the country.
    Back then, manufacturers were keen on getting their brands and cars in front of race spectators, tv viewers and featured in magazine articles as a form of marketing, especially if their cars won. They even coined an adage for it: Win on Sunday - Sell on Monday!
    These cars were built in limited quantities, and most were not street legal and were discouraged for purchase by members of the general public not involved in drag racing. Even when new, these cars were rare, and today, all original examples are even more scare as many did not survive their drag racing glory days in their factory original form or were straight up scrapped.
    We time travel back to the 60s to see what Chrysler’s need-for-speed wizards had cooked up to reign supreme on the drag strip and make history with their legendary creations.

    I have a 1966 Plymouth Satellite that my grandparents bought new. It's a factory 383 4 barrel 4 speed car. My grandpa was 45 and apparently in the midst of a midlife crisis or something when he bought it. I think he was a bit naive about it's performance and found himself somewhat fearful of it because when I bought it from him in 2000 it only had 27,602 original miles on it. He always said it was the clutch and his WW2 leg wounds that made him drive a different car all those years. He said he never sold it because it was the only brand new car he had ever bought until he retired. But I think the truth is he got spooked by it at some point and just stopped driving it . It has a little over 50k original miles on it now and it really is a very quick car. Not by today's performance standards but for it's era . I have drag raced it at a track and ran a 12.24 1/4 mile @ 108 mph with street radials . I have done a few modern updates like ignition and a x pipe exhaust but it still stock other than that. Fun car

    I am 66 and used to go to NY National speedway on Long Island in the early 70's and someone had a 426 wedge Mopar that looked like a 'barn find' and i said to myself what is that thing racing against cars with fancy paint jobs? I didnt know much about the 426 Mopar then but when he ran high 11's i was IMPRESSED

    I have a 65 Coronet, there is nothing more fun than pulling up at stoplights next to some of these newer Camaros and Mustangs. I should be too old for that kind of thing but it’s just too much fun.

    My brother still races our fathers Hemi powered 65 Coronet 500 that runs in the mid 9's. Such a cool car..

    I'm 68 and I can honestly say that in their "hey-day", Chrysler owned the NHRA...NASCAR...USAC.. and drag boat world. Others competed well but Chrylser was the star.

      That's odd because I have read multiple articles and seen several programs over the years that talked about Ford's 427s , 427 Cammers and 428 CJs winning multiple championships in their respective classes in every racing series you mentioned as well as winning 24 Hrs @ Le Mans in 66,67,68 and again for the 4th year in a Row in 69. Now don't get me wrong because I am a Mopar fan as well as a fan of all the American Brands to some degree. But stating that Mopars ruled the day is just false. They did win many races and were very competitive but I do remember something about Chrysler whining , throwing a fit and complaining Nascar about the 427 Cammers which lead to it becoming the only engine of it's time to get banned by Nascar. Anyway your welcome to correct me if I'm wrong but I can't imagine I made it all up.

      What got that Cammer 427 banned was Bill France being on the fence about Ford running it, and when Chrysler started developing a DOHC Hemi to counter it, that’s what made him do it.

      Secondary comment that Ford threw so much money into his LeMans program he had to eventually win it, just to satiate his narcissistic compulsive ego to out do Enzo.
      Much less the fact that Ford wouldn’t even be here today if he hadn’t hired the Dodge brothers to build the engines for his cars in the first place. And when he stopped paying them they left and started Dodge…

      can't seem to remember any " whining" Winning yes. The only thing that I can think of was the engineering people stating the submission and" consideration by the sanctioning" body of a multiple carb engine while They( Chrysler) were limited to single seemed to counter the sactioning body's previous determinatin.

    Great to see these pictures of the original Plymouth A-990. My life-long dream was to one day own a Hemi and not an ordinary street Hemi, but a Race Hemi. There is no such thing as a bad day when I am able to take my 650 HP Race Hemi 1965 Plymouth out for a Blast!

    I have owned many cars, but the one I wish I still had was my 1965 Satellite 2 door hardtop. The car had a 383 with a 4bbl, auto trans with shift kit and headers. Rear tires were huge M50x14 mounted on Ansen sprints. I street raced frequently and never lost to anyone off the line. My MO was to let off the gas after a few hundred feet and let them go screaming by (in frustration). Several times, I would race the same car repeatedly from consecutive red lights. Fun times!

      @Atropus Kargoth Yup, I had a high school friend with a green Roadrunner 383 ci, 4 speed on the floor. I have amazing memories of the week several of us drove from Delaware to Florida for Spring break (this is back before Georgia completed their section of I-95 and there were speed traps everywhere. We got caught. We also drove on Daytona beach!

      Terry had a Maverick with a 302 and took off like a bat out of hell, I was a passenger following in a Roadrunner 383, pistol grip 4 speed, toggle switch hood scoop. We could not catch him until 120mph, then that Roadrunners long legs and 135 mph caught up to him. It was smooth and stable at that speed back in the late 70's.

    I have a 1960 Plymouth Fury. It is a precursor to the what was to come. It was ordered in 1959 to be delivered as a '60 model. It was ordered as a factory race car. It was a Golden Commando. It was acid dipped, no heater or radio. No sound deadening anywhere. The back of the back seat was the front of the trunk. It did not come with spare tire, jack and no where to secure them.

      Very cool! The only Mopar I've ever owned was a '68 fury sport, about 19 foot two door, other than the '01 Cummins I still own, but is that really a Mopar??
      She was no race car with the 318 but no slouch and like floating on a cloud.

    My Dad and his Partner raced a factory 68 SS Hemi Barracuda in the late 60's through till the early 80's
    when I was born. My dad got out of racing and sadly they sold the car. I wish it was sitting in the garage! :)

    I always thought that the idea of racing was “I’ll bring my best, you bring your best and let’s see who is fastest”. Evidently, with NASCAR and the NHRA it’s “ I’ll bring my best, you bring your best and if your best beats my best and your best isn’t a Ford or Chevy, we’ll ban it” It seems like every year they wanted to ban Chryslers from winning. That’s why I quit watching NASCAR after they banned the Daytona and Superbirds. If I was in charge of Chrysler back then, I would have had ads in every magazine with a picture of the Daytona on one page with a caption “Our Daytonas and Superbirds were so fast that NASCAR banned them because Fords and Chevys were too slow. This year, we have a new car that we hope Ford and Chevy can keep up with”. Then on the next page have a picture of a child sitting in a pedal car with MOPAR on the side of it.

      Same thing for me, and when all the cars were no longer looking like a street car but a sponsors brand I was certainly uninterested. Who races M@Ms or Tide?

      My belief is this. If a manufacturer is going stock car racing then whatever they’re racing should have that same body shape across the board for their road going model. Not just a limited run aerodynamic trim that barely anyone buys. The focus should be taking the actual design of the car you sell and making it work. Not offering a homologated version to get the edge in competition. I’m not a fan of homologation specials in stock car racing. I think they have their place in other series, but they didn’t belong in stock car racing. I’m personally glad they banned the winged mopars. If they hadn’t, everyone would have just started building four wheeled airplanes that all looked the same and nothing like what the motoring public of the era was really driving. I think if winged cars got the green light NASCAR would have gotten watered down and boring a lot sooner than it did, and wouldn’t have been nearly as exciting as it was in the 70s and 80s. I think the racing would have been all bunched up in a tidy pack with little happening like it is these days. And I think the cars would have become a lot more sensitive to cosmetic damage from contact. One of the cool things about NASCAR back in the day was how beat up some of these cars got while still managing to finish at the top.

    Certainly nemesis's back in the Day and today.........I bleed Blue....ran a 64 Thunderbolt I bought from Phil Bonner mega years ago. Nice video, has me kicking back thinking of the good old days with my buds down here in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina. Still have my Thunderbolt, just show it now....just can't slam those gears like I did, but not shabby...lol

      START CRYING PAL !back in the late 60's no one wanted theses gas drinking monsters,my Pop bought me a almost new 67 belvedere 426 hemi with heavy duty 4 speed for $2600.This was my high school graduation present or a free vacation trip to Vietnam nam.He didn't know what a hemi was.And later another 68 hemi gtx I bought for $2500.00 Strange theses cars were all beautiful cars gas was $0.32 cents a gallon, still alot back then.Would you believe I found a low mileage 69 Dodge charger Rt /se with 34000 original miles with 4 speed 440 cu. Know as magnum. . Seller advertised the car in the L.A. Times only a few miles from me back in the early 70's.The only guy who loved the car and didn't have to share it cause a girl friend or wife couldn't drive a heavy stick shift. Asking price $1550.00 And I got the car for$1400. Less the mag wheels.I drove the car for 2 years never any real problems and to this day regretted selling it .

    A gentleman in my hometown special ordered a Hemi with an automatic transmission. People thought he was crazy with the auto, but he could (and did) take it to the track and bring home a trophy every time. I don't remember much details about the car because he also had 3 of the prettiest daughters in town. Good news about the car, someone found it and restored it a few years ago. It was the ONLY one built to those specs.

      The 727 Torqueflight Automatic was the only transmission you could get with the race hemi in the early years as it was a robust design and very durable and could handle the power output from the engine.

      @@MagnaLume At the time when Chrysler engines were tearing up their auto transmissions they asked the engineers to build a new one that could hold up to 500HP ALL DAY LONG...Thus the 727 Auto trans was produced.
      I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 360ci auto trans. My Trans guy tells me it is the same as the old 727 trans but with overdrive. Yep, I am happy with that!

    We were boy scouts in our leaders' new Dodge Dart. It was off the dealers lot, a regular street model. We egged him on to show it off, so he hit the gas and delivered some serious driving skill. What a rocket! Decades later I read a review in an old British car mag. "It's ridiculous that this is legal! Putting 80mph factory tires on a car that goes 120mph."

    I grew up in Detroit in this era. Best time ever to be a kid. On the street, tires were a big limiting factor.

      I remember reading & old guys talking about street racing on Woodward Ave back then. Since Detroit was called “ Motor City”, on the CB radio by truck drivers, it’d stand to reason to have a city street with a legacy like that.

    The '67 S/S motor was basically a lightweight, solid lifter street HEMI. The late '64, '65 and '68 motors were much stronger. Still very cool cars.

    When Chrysler downsized their cars, sales suffered but the resulting lighter designs did well in Super Stock drag racing.

    The Hemi set MOPAR apart from everyone else. Think about this. When Hudson was racing in NASCAR they ran with the other cars and were winning very often with Six-cylinder Hemis.

      If you're talking about the Hudson Hornets of the early 50s, those were flathead cars. But cool nonetheless, with camshafts outsourced to Isky and other aftermarket parts from the factory.

      Was about to say the same thing. Hudsons had 308ci flathead 6s with twin Holley carbs, high perf cam, high flow exhaust manifolds and other reliability mods. Fantastic and fast cars.

    6:28 shows Sox and Martin on the cover of supers stock magazine with their 68 cuda, they were my favorite racers growing up, then i moved to a new home and out front of my house sat a sox and martin trailer owned by ronnies son Dean, so naturally i had to go meet him and hear the stories. one things for sure, thats when they made real cars.

      seem to remember a product planning bulletin from Chrysler stating part#'s for a" rear leaf spring package for factory 3200lb A-864 B body cars.A friend raced one of the factory Darts so they sent him every bulletin.Charlie Castaldo's car has documentation out there.His first stick Dart was crashed but his second car,the auto is out there doing the show circuit up north somewhere. Think a guy in Canada has it.

    Chrysler and Mopar have had amazing engineering teams in regards to power and speed.
    After a quiet 25 years or so, without including the Viper, Chrysler and Mopar engineers made a big comeback in the horsepower wars with the introduction of the 6.1, 6.4, and Hellcat V8s.
    Mopar has been introducing new aftermarket parts and packages for a few years now for the 5.7, 6.1, 6.4, and Hellcat V8s.
