What I love about Paul and his films, is that he more than often takes realism and just doubles down on it. He’s not interested in some bombastic story or some outrageous plot but instead more real people and characters. Some of his movies have outrageous moments (especially the frogs scene) but they all relate to the theme and are few and far between. His juxtapositions and frame work and his plots, all have a point and all have a meaning.
Magnolia and The Master are 2 of the greatest films I have seen. Both are certainly the finest works in his collection, in my opinion. This tribute is really beautiful. The song choice, lovely. Terrific work, man! Cheers to you! Be safe :D
Would've loved to see more shots form Phantom Thread because it's definitely his most visually striking film! And he was also responsible for the cinematography
I love every one of his films. Most recently I watched Phantom Thread and I kept saying to myself, each shot is like a gorgeous painting in motion. There Will Be Blood feels that way as well
@@sullivandmitry1416I think inherent vices problem is the dialogue is so mumbly… it’s not clear and conscience at version points. Especially the beginning with the doc and Shasta and that’s the entire setup for the film and it just kills the momentum. But when I listened to Phoenix better it made for a better experience. It’s basically an ABC mystery. A leads to b, b leads to see and do on. It’s actually quite good
Agreed. Each of his films is like a window into his soul as his characters are perfectly realized archetypes which we all embody in some degree. Silly as it sounds, I feel as if I know PTA personally, as he does me, from watching his movies.
2:13 this shot is not only brilliant but also inspiring in terms of camera focusing on the ground, in this case the ocean can be applied, in several other ideas this is what makes this a huge shot for me.
“I know this sounds silly, like this is the scene in the movie where the guy's trying to get ahold of the long-lost son, you know, but this is that scene. And I think they have those scenes in movies because they're true, you know? Because they really happen. See, this is the scene in the movie where you help me out.”
One of the finest director working today. There Will Be Blood and The Master are visually pleasing and will always be my favorite❤️ Edit: His one long takes are amazing and I love the fact that he’s gonna release a movie this christmas
Seeing those little snippets of "Inherent Vice" make me wish you'd reconsider your decision to stop focusing on solo films, if only to make a featurette for that film. However, I understand and respect your decision, and I am happy to see it included in this tribute.
Paul Thomas Anderson is my favorite contemporary director. All his movies are singular achievements, conceived and realized by him. The characters he writes are all so endlessly facinating, all flawed but none without our interest or sympathy. I love how he inverts what filmmakers usually do which is characters grounded in framilar our experience and place them in fantastical settings. PTA with his mercurial dialogue created dreamlike stories fully grounded in the real world. The effect to me is an art which reflects the experice we have of feeling alienated from the world because of our own self centered psyches.
People get complicated with what makes a great director, all I know is when I was depressed and borderline suicidal the only person that was there for me was Paul, he was there for me when I was being abused by my father, he was there when I was so lonely I called a phone sex line, Paul was there when my best friend became hooked to drugs. Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, all the movies that saved me when I was at my lowest, they whispered to me "you're not alone in this", people get caught up in the technical, in the "filmmaker jargon", that's fine, I can talk that talk too, but ultimately for me it's the raw humanity that beats at the heart of his films, to me that's what make Paul Thomas Anderson of the greatest directors to ever live. And what the hell, if you watch this and read my comment Paul, thank you for everything you've done for me, I can honest to God say your art saved my life. - love Tzvi
Realmente hermoso, Magnolia es mi película favorita de PTA y la canción evoca perfectamente las emociones de cada película. Muchas gracias por estos hermosos momentos :')
I have a bad and good time on this day neither I don't know how to describe it. This video it's so much helping me for relaxing my anxiety about this world right now.
Another brilliant video brother, I regret the decision till to this day picking Juno over there Will be blood. 3 months ago watched three times in a row on Netflix a masterpiece. Did you ever see the master in 70 mm one of the most aesthetically beautiful things I've ever seen in my life for the people that care for them things.
Punch-Drunk is my all-time favourite Paul Thomas Anderson movie (along with There Will Be Blood). It’s a hidden gem and that hasn’t been noticed for decades.
Man you chose the most intimate and emotional shots... But as fans, we all know there are still thousands of stunning shots in his movies to explore... That's what makes him one of the bests
If you notice in all Anderson’s films you find yourself desperately rooting for the protagonist despite them being deeply flawed & destructive. All his films are masterpieces but There Will Be Blood easily makes the top 10 films ever made…truly breathtaking
This should have a Vol. 1 next to it or something. There’s a good dozen or so shots I was expecting to see and didn’t (some wouldn’t fit the tune to the song, like the opening of Boogie Nights). There’s so much more stuff to play with. Great work.

The man makes sheer perfect films and doesn’t get an Oscar. Meanwhile the director of Dumb and Dumber wins Best Picture. Classic.
PTA doesn't need an Oscar imo. If you love film enough, you'll see the value of his work regardless of it being Oscar-winning or not.
