SLOW TV - Turn left for London (Grand Union Canal)

- Many new boat owners get their boats dropped in at P&S Marine, near Watford. Usually they are heading for London to live, so the first (or perhaps its the last) question they ask is, 'Which way to London?'!
Ralph, one of the owners of P&S Marine ( / pandsmarinellp ) is usually a helpful nice chap, but on this occasion he was playing up for the camera! :)
This is an hours trip towards London from Cassio Bridge to Lot Mead lock, near Rickmansworth. There are a couple of breaks in recording due to length limits on my camera, and it cuts off a bit sudden as I ran out of space on the SD Card :(
Also apologies for the over exposure to start with, the sun was playing about all day...
I like this video better than most.... because it is done in real time continuous and we get to see everything....not just snippets of the journey!
Had to watch this twice. Sorry, so relaxing I fell asleep the first time. Thanks for taking me along for the ride.
for those who want to know about lock protocol, when you leave a lock all paddles must be down and both gates shut. sometimes that does not work as gates can blow open later. if you approach a lock that is empty and someone is coming the other way, then you wait for them to use the lock, or visa versa, in other words do not waste water. brilliant video, good sound no stupid music or daft comments, just as it should be.and yes if you are daft enough to leave a plastic boat opposite a marina, then you are asking to get it cracked !

willicr It was slow in the 1940s. Horses pulled many of the barges and those that had engines slowly tonk, tonk, tonk up the river.
4 MPH is fine. Gave me time to reel in my line.
I do so love the sound of those diesel engines.
Enjoyed the videos, so thank you for that. Certainly better than many. I'm glad you have to live with that exhaust note, as it is certainly not for me. I prefer my engine to be small and silent. Listening to that all day, when out on the cut, would give me brain ache! Nice in passing though.

Thinking of buying a boat to live on myself , neat little trick to know / learn I reckon .
Nice journey mate. Just one question, what's up with engine? Last video she was running clear, now she's smoking like mad. (I bet you knew someone would ask).
It was just cold as it had been idling for over an hour at the yard, and I'd recently topped up the oil in the top end, so some gets in the cylinder and only burns off when you wind it on. Also, I think I need new rings, having replaced everything else recently.

A land based group of kids visiting, not off a boat or anything.
Thanks. I just saw the day glows and then the bottom gate open and close and then open again to admit a boat. You were patient in the xtrme.

Good to see so many of these boats painted like they were originally rather then like uncle Bens she’d.
I'm always surprised that marinas dont put bollards out to allow you to spring off. It'd make sharp turns so much easier.
I feel SAD for the people who have to leave this lovely green spot and go work in smoggy, loud London!
One day you'll have to do one of these with random commentary ... maybe just talking about your experiences of working on the cut..

why is the canal water so discoloured ??
The canals here are shallow, and lined with clay to hold the water in. The clay and silt from decaying leaves is stirred up every time.a.boat moves or operations a lock.
Mike, What is the knot you use on the gate that holds the boat from drifting backwards but seemed to release itself going forwards out of the lock... or did I miss that bitt!

Boy, I can't help thinking that the diesel exhaust blows right back at the pilot. It'd be far nicer with an electric motor.
aspro444 much of the exhaust goes up, though the wind can blow it back to the steerer. The problem with electric is that you still need to produce it or store it though there are a couple of solar powered canal boats but range is limited.

On Turn left for London video, it was all boat and no canal. The video should have been shot from closer to mthe bow. So I did not watch much of it.

If you look closely you'll see the mast on deck.I'd be willing to take a guess they stepped the mast to explore the canals and arent regulars ;-)

very true, but the point of the matter is the UK needs lubricant for lock paddle gear, bridges and other squeaky things i hear.
Yes, well they are not all well maintained, due to cost I suppose, also some of these gates are over twenty years old.
You would use grease for lock gates, not wd40!
EngineEngineer okay I wish someone would send England tubes of Grease then and I did know that WD-40 is is not the proper lubricant for that but the point is we need lubrication for England I'm going to start of lubrication for England trust fund
