A "slow TV" (real-time) bow-camera recording of the trip from Kings Orchard Marina at Lichfield to Fradley Junction on June 21st 2020. No music, all natural sound (intentionally, don't ask me to put music on these; I never will).
Recorded on a DJI Osmo Action as an experiment instead of my usual Sony AX33. Note the very wide angle of the lens makes it appear that I and the other boats are speeding. This is just an optical illusion, I assure you.

Theme music: "Vespers" by Topher Mohr and Alex Alena, from the RUclips music library
What a relaxing video. The only anxiety I felt as an American was watching all those cars and trucks driving the wrong way on the highway.
I feel like an old time 'figurehead' somehow attached to a narrowboat! Well, it beats being in a museum forever.
Slow TV is one of the most amazing concepts for television, the Norwegians are really leagues ahead in that matter. It's also the exact reason why I love watching this channel, and this video is the epitome of 'cruising the cut' in my opinion! I think David is very lucky to be able to live like this.
True.
Nature is its own music! Very serene to hear the wind in the grasses, birds chirping, and other sounds around your boat.
I could do without the traffic noise though.
Jim Alt I think it’s a good reminder of what you’re leaving behind. All the hustle, bustle and lots of stress.
I just love these. Like a mini vacation. And in 4K no less. Thanks, David, it's much appreciated!
Thank you so much for NOT putting music on these! Love to hear the actual sounds of the canal. Wonderful.
So many RUclips videos are ruined by loud annoying music, many with the dreaded beat box.
Thank you David
These videos are a great study companion. Mellow noise to keep the brain from getting distracted, with the occasional random birdsong to keep it awake haha
The best thing to drift off to sleep to, thanks David for a trip on the canals and a serene experience. Love your vlogs but these hold a special place in your repertoire.
Unfortunately, I have watched your entire channel. I say unfortunately, because now I have no episodes left to watch!
I want to thank you for all the witty content. I've been very sick with covid 19 for the lsat couple of months and I spent hours and hours and hours watching the herons of the canals fly off a little bit just to have to fly off a little bit again. Your sense of humour is very enjoyable. I think I laughed for five minutes straight when you, rather dryly and off-handedly, said something to the effect of, "and there you see water bottles being rather effectively used as weights."
We have our own canal in Sweden, but it's quite different and less charming than the English (et al) system. Now, I want to take a holiday and cruise the Macclesfield Canal and calmly, yet firmly let the ducks and swans know who's in charge; them.
Thanks - nice to put on the tv and sit down with a cup of tea and just relax to the gentle sounds of the passing water, the barge engine, the birds, I could go on and on. So just thanks for doing this.
Very calming. I could just loop this all day on my TV like a screensaver
Thank you for NOT adding music as the birdsong was delightful. However a small whisper fan along side my screen added nicely to the event. Cheers!
Howdy from Texas. Happy to see a new video where I can travel along on a quiet summer day.
LOVE the no music, real time vid, normally inspires memories of poetic lines, this time the leprechaun in me picked a musical phrase-“the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind,” cheers.
This is fantastic; sun, storms, clouds, quiet, loud. Watching while I work, perfect background!!
David, I know a lot of people, or most perhaps, like the natural sounds of the cruise. I myself, really enjoy your videos when you give a narration. It make it feel like your telling me of the things I should focus on either seen or not in your videos. Your video is always great. Thanks for posting. ps hope you heal quickly. Never fun to be injured
What happened? I didn't know David was injured
Hi, there will be narrated vlogs as always but in the meantime, one of my occasional "not a vlog" slow TV videos. Cheers, the ankle and wrist are both fine this morning.
I just love watching.. I could live on the water, I get fed up with the rest of the world lol
I love that at 1:03:59 the dog takes a dive and the reaction of the people lol.
This video made me realize I come to your channel far less for the narrow boat experience than I thought.
I come here for the excellent narrative you bring.
Once again David , thankyou for allowing me to sit in your welldeck...and just watch the world go by....peace to you my friend..
I find these trip videos very relaxing and have watched them before bed as a relaxation after a long day of computer art. And so, I'm grateful. Thank you.
The Quiet Sounds of the water and of the birds and you just going down the canal is so delightful & quite relaxing. I wouldn't mind going for a ride on a day like that.
At last...I’ve got a sausage sandwich, my feet are up, and I’m enjoying a peaceful canal voyage. It can’t get any better.
I get to go on a boat ride for an hour now. Thanks David! That traffic noise is horrible tho. Please stop the motorway next time. I enjoy the birds more. 😉
Relaxing to watch.
As a native Arizonan, US, I am fascinated by narrowboats in general, and all the greenery. And wait- it actually rains regularly?? What must that be like? I guess we wouldn't have a desert if it rained all the time, but I can enjoy watching it, right?
Very peaceful. Not quite the same without the engine noise but I can imagine that and the vibration under the feet, the smell of freshly brewed tea steaming in the mug on the roof. I’m there!
The old saying that "you can't please all the people all of the time" comes to mind here. There are some people that clearly love to watch 70 mins of canal cruising, with just the engine and birds for company. I'm not one of them, but I appreciate the effort made for the the people that did enjoy this.
That Blackbird singing, was the perfect music
This was the perfect canal ride to settle down my 7 year old grandson. He was mesmerized and soon nodding off on my shoulder. Thank you for a peaceful ending to our busy day!
After a stressful day in the machine shop...Coming in the house ..flip on RUclips ...Watching your Vlog put my mind at ease ...it so relaxing and calming...Thanks for sharing.
I find these very relaxing
I like that part were the dog goes into the water, and everybody is like, "whaaa?"
1:03:51
On the canal again, can't wait to get back on the canal again... :-)
Exciting race. He's closing! He's closing! Will he find a place to overtake? He sees a gap and goes for it, pedal to the metal!
Natural sound GREAT ... even the "roar" of the motorway a reminder of the contrast between present-day and the wonderful halcyon days of yesteryear! Thanks, and keep on cruising (I know the fellow boatmen always greet one-another, but I do wish the ducks would follow the same tradition ... would have been even more pleasant cruise if they'd given a few *quack*quacks*)! Best regards, from an old "river rat" in Texas.
I love cruising the cut after a long day! Thanks brother 👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks for adding the coordinates. I love to see the country side.
I routinely watch 2 narrowboat vlogs, you & foxes afloat. Every vlog both of you do just makes me want to move to england and live on a narrowboat. Thank you for all the vlogs as they help me relax & put a smile on my face in these awful times.
I found this and played while working. Fantastic! I love the birds, rain, and all the other sounds. It’s soothing. I live in Houston, TX USA and.this got me out of the city. Looks so idyllic. Would love to go to England one day. Thank you for posting. 😊
Nice treat on a Monday evening!
Thanks David.
Outstanding. My wife and I are fans of Norwegian SlowTV and we really enjoyed this. It gave us a sense of what it's like to cruise the British canals in real time, something we wish we could do. (We're retired, on a small fixed budget, and living in Tennessee, USA.)
I see it has become very busy and more than double the amount of boats since I had mine on the waterways 25 years ago then! Not too sure I would feel relaxed on the water today as I used to be, but a nice trip down memory lane none the less...
Why music? Nature gives us all we need!
Enjoyed the ride, slow and nice. Thanks for taking us along.
Good to see that you are out and about in the beautiful countryside.
i love these non vlogs they are so relaxing and the view is wonderful i have got to go there and cruise the cut before i leave this world so lovely thank you so much
Very very enjoyable - thank you David
Looks like a happy place ,riding on the waterway, thanks for sharing.
I am considering moving back to England after some 20 years in New Zealand, watching this makes me realise what I could be going back to.
Nice to see you back cruising the cut, David.
This is the uncontested winner of the most relaxing video I have ever watched. More of these please David (though I do love all yours others very much)!
I had a tough day working on my doctoral dissertation, my brain felt wrecked. I needed the cruise. Thank you, David.
A balm to the soul .Keep up the good work !
I found the rain, very refreshing.
Very relaxing... gave me a chance to put on my Symphonic Queen cd and settle in for a little floating on the cut🤗
David, this is absolutely relaxing. Best way to pass a 28 degree, California day indoors.
Wonderful video. I downloaded it and played it back at 12X, really made that narrowboat do some fancy watersports.
These real-time vids are great once in a while. It really gives a good sense of the speed (or lack of) that you cruise at. :)
Also, IDK why... but I feel the desire for a cheese sandwich now. ;)
Lovely little jaunt. Got a cupper and sat back thanks.
The boaters who add banjo music should watch this. You could put in which canal it was. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks, a treat to watch .
You betcha
I think this is an ASMR with a view. I like it, but I also enjoy your narrations in the vlogs. Thanks, David!
Nice ride, cept for that part near the highway. Thanks CC
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you overtake another boat! Full speed ahead😸
It was an action-packed trip!
I really love these "a Cappella" videos, these are so relaxing and beautiful ..... Thanks
Just great David. Just not the same. We need your chat. More vlogs please, we need them more than ever.👍🙏🇦🇺🇦🇺
There will be vlogs, as always, but not until I've done enough cruising to accumulate sufficient material. Hence in the meantime, a slow TV video.
You should get a sickle-bar attachment for the side of the boat and trim the tow path as you go. Then you can send a bill to the Canal and River Trust for maintenance.
Cutting the Cut?
Perfect to dream about cooler weather.
It's the journey, not the destination. Been all over the world and never found such tranquility and peace as on the canals (excluding the stress of congested locks and swing bridges)
The perfect antidote to the day I've had. Thank you David.
Nice overtake by the way....
The contrast between noisy road traffic and the cruiser you overtook Mr Speedy Gonzales with the sound of nature, makes me appreciate the ability in retirement of being able to do those quiet things. Oh how I miss lockdown, being snowed in and not having batteries for my hearing aid
Well, I like both the vlogs and these also for relaxation times. Thanks, David. and yes, being a guy; I even like your bilge repainting episodes.
I love both styles of videos. Both are enjoyable in their own way. Bravo for changing it up now and then. 🌿🌷
Thanks David, very relaxing and the country side looks wonderful ----- from Down Under.
thank you david. great to see you out and about.
I love the gentle movement of the canal boat, this made me feel I was there on board. Lovely thank you
Love this! (Just like the train vids with a similar point of view!!!) On the big screen....
A lovely relaxing video...thank you. I was just beginning to miss you! I love that there’s no music, just all the sounds of the cut, including the cars on the dual carriageway at the start. Good to see you back.
I Love Slow TV! Thanks for this David, and speeding no less, I felt like i was in a race when you were catching up with that cruiser. hehe.
No speeding, I assure you.
I can't believe I watched the whole thing, but it was a boring evening! Just had a tooth pulled this morning, and this kept my mind off of it! Was watching Pawn Stars in the background, and enjoyed the boat being passed on your trip! Just like others have commented, we need to hear you describing the cruise with details that keep us entertained! Stay safe and healthy!
Restful. More rain please. Love the rain.
For next April 1st: Make a small fake prow. Attach it to a gimbal. A friend stands at the front of your boat, while you noodle down the canal. You swing around to do a y-turn, and then the person with the gimbal steps off the bow and walks through a field, (well okay, this is interesting maybe it's a flooded reed bed) but then he reaches a road. Or quick cut and you're cruising down a road getting passed by bicycles. Well it was funnier before I wrote it down.
I am playing this for the "upteemed" time and each time I love the rain. Too bad it's hard on the lowly operator...darn humans.
Yes! More Slow TV please!
good to see you cruising the cut again.
I really like the Slow TV, but I also miss David's traditional "Hello and welcome to the vlog..."
So interesting! I enjoy both styles of vlogs. Please make more like this-very relaxing.
What a beautiful day for a cruse. Thanks for taking us along. Never mind the rain. It wasn't a bother. Plenty of sun, and DUCKS !
As you overtook the boat I thought I heard something about 'BMW drivers'....coming from the other skipper...
Hello David very nice ride Thank you for sharing...👍❤️🙏✌️
Thanks for the ride. I enjoyed this very much.
Great visuals, but the wit of your commentary is appreciated as well.
My favorite moment (besides the whole trip! gosh, it was all so beautiful!) was the mallard duck who gave you a piece of his mind at 1:05:40 for sneaking up on him. Thank you so much for posting this masterpiece!
Fantastic Zen. Thank you.
My favourite bit is the chap who said "I thought I recognised you" as he cruised past. Made my day David. It must happen a lot.
Actually that was me to the chap on the other boat, who I know from Twitter.
@@CruisingTheCut Oops.
Watching you catch up and pass the Mathar fin had me cheering like it was the Epson Derby. Thanks for another respite from the isolation blues.
Great video. Agreed, no music necessary. I do enjoy your commentary though because for some of us it is a history and English geography lesson.
Thank you for including the best music in the world...the sounds of nature.
This is great. So relaxing. Thank you
Boy do I LOVE these silent vlogs. Perfect de-stressor!!!!!!
Good accompaniment to Johnny Walker , Sounds of the Seventies, with a glass of vino collapso . Cool overtake of the cruiser .
