It goes for the entire series. It's been in stasis for over a decade despite getting a new producer and still not much has happened except making time pass. That really didn't do anything. Look at KoF. It has time pass and yet it's mainly for story content and hardly aging the characters. That's how it should be. Tekken also does this well, thought it's story has fallen off with Hirada, despite him being great on the fighting side of it (depending who you ask). I really don't know why Street Fighter struggles as much as it does. It may be the priority is seeing the IP as a brand to be exploited now and not treat it like it has legacy.
Honestly, Ryu came a long way from being the edgy karateka who has no friends or family. Kinda. And in hindsight, the Alpha/Zero series was the best thing that happened to him, narratively speaking. Alpha 2 laid his purpose bare, besides becoming the best he can be. Ryu... even had something akin to what I call a personality back then, funnily enough.
@@CaptainVulcan Given Street Fighter was the first fighting franchise, story hadn't become a prominent aspect yet, which is why the creator rectified this when he made Fatal Fury. Alpha was simply to fill the game between the next entry, but it ended up being popular. It also did finally put story for the characters forward, so it was only the first time seeing it unless one watched animations. I've no idea what you mean by Ryu being edgy. You know what edgy implies, right? In no way, shape or form is Ryu that.
@@blumiu2426 The old SNES and Genesis game manuals states that he has no family nor friends. Also his longtime inner battle with the Satsui no Hadou. Kage. That's pretty edgy to me. Then again, edgy is probably more suited in describing Akuma.
@@CaptainVulcan So orphans are edgy to you? Having no friends isn't related to being anti-social, it's because of his upbringing and focus on training. And that's not true either, there is Ken. Having inner turmoil, a literal one, isn't edgy. Edgy describes a anti-social behavior that intentionally is rebellious, wanting to stand out. I think you need to check your definitions of things. You apply them pretty broadly. Then again, if you're young, probably not sure where it came from or started and just here how it is loosely used on the internet.
Ryu has always been wanting to get stronger every time, That was his main purpose, even at master level in SF6, I think he still considers on wanting to become stronger still, this man has fought superheroes/villains, demons, androids, gods, and even aliens, It's hard to say that if Ryu wants to retire judging by all the fights that he's been through, but he still has more people to fight, respected and honorable warrior.
That's how Japan reacts to such things, though I think in the US it would be the same, if not somewhat mixed. The new gen have less attachment and hardly care for legacy.
@@dahvongregg45 Where did you get that? Toriyama wanted to move on from Goku, but when fans caught wind of it in Japan, they wrote letters against it. They wanted to keep him, so he had to alter how he wanted the tournament to go because the Cell tournament was of course when that was supposed to take place.
@@LarryBonson bro if you dont like dbz story thats fine but its not a joke buu saga was goated battle of gods was fire same with resurection f same with broly movie and top
Short answer, no. Long answer: Ryu is literally the face of Street Fighter and embodies the core values that the story wants to give us: to strive and be better than we were yesterday and to face the temptation of the easy way out by consciously deciding to not take the short cut and instead invest the hard work to be better than what the easy way could bring anyway. On top of that Ryu is literally the second most used character in the latest game, Street Fighter 6, with Ken being the most popular. It honestly just is not Street Fighter without him at least being in the game and being playable. He ain't going anywhere.
No Ryu doesn’t need to retire if they take out Ryu for the next Street Fighter game that means No more Street fighter games, no more Marvel Vs Capcom fighting games. I remember the original Concept for Street Fighter III games without Ryu, Ken, Chun li, Street Fighter III wasn’t successful during the test previews of the game Street fighter III. It’s like when Big boss Aka Naked Snake and Solid Snake Died that was the end of the Metal gear video game franchise it will be the same with Capcom’s Street Fighter
Thanks! I.Even though Ryu is one of my favorite characters in SF I never knew Ryu”s and Evil Ryu”s full story. I know this took a lot of time and research and I appreciate your hard work! 👏👊
If there are a couple opponents that I would love to see Ryu fight before his retire can either be from a Shonen anime, Mortal Kombat, or other franchises that could be a worthy rival to Ryu.
I've spent decades trying to find the answer. I've seen countless wonders and horrors beyond comprehension. So to answer whether I will ever stop fighting? Not a chance. The path is still long, and I must continue forward.
That hole in Evil Ryu's chest comes from his fight in Asura's Wrath. Asura literally punches him in the chest to the moon. And if you ask how Ryu got into Asura's Wrath, it comes from the ending of Street Fighter X Tekken where he get's teleported after reaching an alien cube.
Ryu Done? No. Stop being a bloody hobo? *_YES._* Remember when MGS ditched Snake? When Parasite Eve ditched Aya? When Dino Crisis ditched Regina? Yes, you do. *For all the wrong reasons.*
As far as stories goes, I would say Ryu always has the potential to make the transition of being a student for strength to finally becoming a dedicated teacher of it. Otherwise, I imagine he will mostly just play the part as the recurring champion that other new characters challenge in their respective journeys... While of course getting swept in by the stories of his friends, and they may have more tales to tell.
Ryu is my first character in a video game that I admired from the get go. I lived in the South Island of New Zealand and nobody knew anything about the game. Back then Ryu was pronounced ‘Roo’ and Guile was ‘Goo-Lee’ haha! Moving to the North Island, I was mocked for it. Understandably. They pronounced Ryu as ‘rye-yoo’ We then changed it to ‘ree-yoo’ when the animated movie came out!
I view lore in fighting games the same way I view it in professional wrestling. It's all Kayfabe for the players but behind the scenes all fighting game characters go into the locker room give each other a hand shake and make plans for the weekend until next week's show. This explains how fighting game characters always seem to resurrect even in games they should be dead for according to the lore and any plot holes that exist in the often times convoluted story lines for each character. Ryu's story may be done, but he will always be a fighter and fighters never actually retire
No disrespect intended mr top hat but to answer your thumbnail and the reason for this video: HELL NO. RYU SHOULD NOT RETIRE. hes one of the faces of street fighter. Hes the one a lot of us first used and learned the basics of the game with. Hes iconic His hadouken and spin kick (cant spell that off the top of my head) are iconic moves of him. Ryu is street fighter.
12:08-12:12 Both hilarious & very well put. 😂👍 Btw Ryu is Ryu, but I'm still waiting for Sagat. It's the yin/yang and dragon/tiger thing you know, something embedded in ancient culture, mystique and spirituality. Capcom better make Sagat op for sf6 and put Muay Thai back on the map.
Retire the characters chasing down Shadaloo, since Shadaloo isn't really a thing anymore. Retire the gimmick/goofy characters Blanka and Dhalsim. Retire Ken since he's got more important things to do, than fight in the streets. To suggest that the character who's whole reason for being/fighting, (seeking greater challenge) retire, is laughable.
I don't know if the Street Fighter 2 Animated Movie was canon, but I believe this was the best portrayal of Ryu. Sure, it's an old anime, but still worth watching. Bison/Vega was also terrifyingly powerful and intimidating in that movie. I believe the grassland area where Ryu and Sagat fought was even brought to one of the Alpha games.
He most certainly does not. Ryu is forever. It will never be Street Fighter without Ryu. I'm not even a Ryu player but I will boycott the fuck out of it. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Cammy, and Bison - Don't fuck with them.
Ryu's story is truly over the day he marries Chun Li and the fans are ready to move on to Sakura and Sean. Good luck with Capcom having the testicular fortitude to actually do that, but... yeah.
I appreciate Capcom advancing and developing his storyline and resolving the Akuma conflict. I dont think Ryu should ever be totaly phased out of the roster though. I’m not a Luke fan, but I do understand Capcom’s efforts to shift the spotlight from character to character for storyline reasons.
Ryu STILL has to defeat Akuma. So that is a storyline there. But, no. Ryu IS the face of Street Fighter. Luke and Alex have tried to be the new face of SF, but no accepts anyone by Ryu.
Idk why tf they decided to age the characters. Wtf... bruh... They could have been, should have neen. And hopefully WILL remain eternal. Why in the hell are you aging your characters like that ?¿? Players aging and still playing is a thinf, but who gives a fudge ?¿? You caotured lightning in a botttle, and you want to destroy your own roster?¿? The roster that made you ?¿? *RIDICULOUS !¡!*
It seems SF6 was the spearhead of taking away Ryu for a "modern audience" hero. Well, if they do it, SF7 will be a big flop. Even though, there are more organic and interesting ways to retire Ryu and Ken, and many others... but CrapCom must obey their newmasters, SBI/DEI/ESG/BlackRock-Vanguard...
Street Fighter withou Ryu is like Dragon Ball without Goku. The movement for Hadouken and Kamehameha are both based on the Tora Guchi in Karate. But the hadouken is a single shot and the Kamehameha is a continuous wave
I know a Street Fighter without Ryu feels like sacrilege, akin to MK3 originally not having Scorpion, but I really like the idea of his journey coming to a peaceful ending. I can see him taking up Gouken's place as the master, teaching a new generation and running his own dojo. All the while keeping up contact with his friends, and rivals. I can see aged Ryu & Sagat sharing a zen moment together, before having what is at the end of the day a nostalgic, friendly match before seeing each other off with one another's good graces as a regular thing, for example. I know its hard to let go of favorite characters, but I think it would be great for his development. That, and how cool would it be a couple entries later, like in SF8 or so, we see master Ryu return as a powerful secret boss and/or unlockable character in traditional style?
It’s not so much you can’t retire Ryu as you can’t retire Ryu and/or Ken. I see Ryu as 1/2 of a character. The other 1/2 is Ken Masters. These two are bonded by an ironclad, fraternal rivalry. It’s the relationship between them which serves as the nucleus of this series. When the IP tries to get away from this, it suffers. Remember the one and done SF2010? How about when SF3 was trying to push Alex? How about all the film adaptations that’ve ignored this essential component and failed as a result. Without that binary compound of Ryu/Ken, SF seriously deflates. It’d be like eating a cheeseburger that hasn’t bread or meat. All your left with is cheese and condiments and that’s not enough.
Here's the solution. Let SF6 be the final Street Fighter with the iconic characters ( Ryu, Ken, Chun-li, Guile, Cammy), then do a Street Fighter Gaiden/Legends game that features Sean, Laura, Jaimie, Kimberly, Chun-li's student, Abel, and Manon, let those characters shine. After that, revisit the original Street Fighter, do a remake in the same style as SFIII and that's it, let the franchise die gracefully and with dignity. They should also do a Final Fight 4 , then let that franchise fade gracefully. Anything else and more is milking it and will eventually suck.
In terms of his story YES but in terms of him being in Street Fighter NO. He has already mostly accomplished on what he strive of doing for the most part having to rid himself of the Satsui No Hadou and much fought against his enemy Bison. And at a point he wanted to avenge his master against Akuma but as it turns out he was still alive and his hate for Akuma kinda dwindle towards him. If anything now he just taking up the role of Oro and just seeking out opponents to challenge and nothing more and is not taking up anything important to the story just like some other characters. And no one stays retire in fighting games, only if they get kill off or at least forgotten if which in any case if Capcom were to kill off Ryu, the internet and everyone will be piss and explode. Hell just hearing the idea of Ryu retiring has already made the comment section implode with an emphatic *NO*.
I remember "Star Blazers" on TV, right around 86 in the USA. It's original release was 1974-80. That's one of the classic's. How cool to have inspired the Hado. Dragonball came out in 84 in Shonen Jump. Master Roshi fist used the Kamehameha blast on April 16, 1986. In the Manga "Kame Kame Kame Kame Kame Chameleon" Street fighter released in 87, with a development time 2 years. So from 85-87.
Ryu should be older and be a final hidden boss. Damaging hits and efficient. Ken should retire and have Mel take over. Bring back the alpha roll for sneaky crossups.
I don’t think Capcom will do anything with my boy Mel. In 3rd Strike, Guile's teenaged daughter Amy/Chris could've taken his place, but they’d rather put in some lame emo d-bag named Remy on the roster.
Not only is Ryu the face of street fighter, he is definitely needed in the roster as he is the foundation of how the game is played which means people usually would pick him to learn how the game works in every iteration of the game, even if capcom wants to sideline him in the roster lore wise, he'll always be there otherwise the fan base will also probably abandon the franchise, they made Luke broken asf in sf6 but ive still seen more ryus from lower tier to top tier online
I do a bit of both.. My mains are Guile, M Bison and Blanka all on classic, but if im just having fun I use modern Gief and JP to help with the mental stack
@Ticketman99 Hes the most balanced character in the roster, he's got fireballs, DP..he's got easy combo routes that deal massive damage, and learning how to play Ryu is a transferable skill across every street fighter game even if you start from 6 and work your way down.
NO RYU IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO RETIRING!!!! If you are playing SF 6 he's still a great character. Then we are getting Marvel vs Capcom collection back which will eventually mean MvC 4 will be in the works. Then we have SNK vs Capcom. Ryu is as well known as Mario , Link, Zelda, Sonic, Megaman, and Master Chief.
What they could d o for Ryu's legacy going forward is make him a grand master of martial arts or give him a dojo of his own. Imagine as he gets older he gets to train a young new pupil or several and the one who will succeed Ryu will carry on his traditions, his inspirations, his ambition, and legacy. Maybe new adventures await yet even for an aging hero who probably won't be taking a full back seat like other masters.
The only remaining narrative thread left for Ryu is his quest to become the best fighter. But becoming the best fighter is not a matter of how many fighters he beats up to quantitatively measure how much better hes is in fighting. Its more like Ryu's own personal ideal. I'd like to see Ryu realize that he has reached his peak. He can't go any further without sacrificing his humanity like Akuma did by embracing SnH. Maybe the next storyline for Ryu is that he's building a dojo and recruiting students.
When developing Street Fighter III: New Generation, Capcom almost left out Ryu and I (with Sean Matsuda replacing us). Andore Hugo and Yang Lee almost took the 9th and 10th roster spots.
Street fighter draws inspiration from manga and it's not surprising if inspiration was drawn from dragon ball as 80s manga was the basis for many of it's iconic characters and their poses. Guile was inspired by Polnareff from Jojo as well as Rose from Lisa Lisa.
I would say Ryu hasn't finished his story until he becomes a true mentor. He has never officially chosen a student despite Sakura following him around. This reminds me: I would also like to see Sakura in SF6 to see how she leveled up. Did she become a housewife or something? She seemed to have considered changing her life path in SF5.
Speaking of SFV, in that game Sakura is around early 20's, so how old is she now? We know a significant time have passed since Mel was born during the events of SF4, and he looks to be around 7-8yo in SF6.

Ryu is a real bound human, not a superhuman. At this age if Ryu doesn’t able to defeat Akuma at this point then he’s done,
It’ll be hard to retire such an icon. Street fighter is almost lost without Ryu or even Chun-li.
The series would reboot b4 Ryu could retire.
Exactly. He is a master, but that doesnt mean he cant still grow and master this new style and energy. He still has a lot to accomplish
They tried to replace Goku with Gohan in Dragon Ball Z at one point. We all saw how that played out. So no, Ryu stays! He IS Street Fighter.
That's how Japan reacts to such things, though I think in the US it would be the same, if not somewhat mixed. The new gen have less attachment and hardly care for legacy.
fans were actually excited for gohan becoming the new main character we seen gokus entire life up to his death, so its a bit different circumstances
And not Replacing Gohan with Goku is why DBZ storyline became a joke. Ryu is a different story and should stay.

Ryu: Retire?! What Kind Sick Joke is this?!

@TopHatGamingManChannel now we need a SF2 ROM hack where you are one of the fighters.
Thats like saying Mario should retire from the Bros series.
He's transitioning from student to master - from learner to teacher.
I know this took a lot of time and research and I appreciate your
hard work! 👏👊
If there are a couple opponents that I would love to see Ryu fight before his retire can either be from a Shonen anime, Mortal Kombat, or other franchises that could be a worthy rival to Ryu.
Goken and Akuma are still growing and they mad old
He can for sure keep going
Haven't watched yet but if GEN can keep fighting as an old dude, so can Ryu. 😊
I've spent decades trying to find the answer. I've seen countless wonders and horrors beyond comprehension. So to answer whether I will ever stop fighting?
Not a chance. The path is still long, and I must continue forward.
If ryu needs to retire then that means street fighter needs to retire.
Street Fighter 3 the next generation tried it already. Never again. Alex is cool but not enough Luke is cool but he's not Ryu.
Why does he need to retire when Oro's like a thousand years old?
Not until he becomes the next Sheng Long / Gouken. Once he's old and gray and become this legendary master, then he can retire.
If ryu leaves i will be done playing street fighter frfr
"Does Ryu Need To Retire !?"

"Ryu, this is your life." I dig it.❤
Ryu Done? No.
Stop being a bloody hobo? *_YES._*
Remember when MGS ditched Snake? When Parasite Eve ditched Aya? When Dino Crisis ditched Regina? Yes, you do. *For all the wrong reasons.*
Akuma is older and still going. Akuma is also Ryu’s father.
The Kamehameha came first. Glad to finally have the answer to THAT question.
._.
If capcom want to kill the Franchise, this would be one way to fulfill this task with full success.
Actually, Gouken was in Street Fighter 4 as an unlockable. He was in SF4 from the start
No way I can image older Ryu characters in future SF games 😊
You never learn from the animation transformers the movie!
Street Fighter, or any Capcom crossover fighting game without Ryu, is like chocolate milk without the chocolate.
The fight is all that matters. As long as there is a worthy opponent, Ryu's story will never end.
You think Ryu is related to the 800 other video game characters named Ryu?
Hes iconic
His hadouken and spin kick (cant spell that off the top of my head) are iconic moves of him.
The day that happens is the day I quit playing street fighter.
No SF without Ryu, Ryu is Street Fighter😎💯💯
I don't know if the Street Fighter 2 Animated Movie was canon, but I believe this was the best portrayal of Ryu. Sure, it's an old anime, but still worth watching. Bison/Vega was also terrifyingly powerful and intimidating in that movie. I believe the grassland area where Ryu and Sagat fought was even brought to one of the Alpha games.
It's a sin if Ryu retire from Street Fighter, sure Luke may be the star of SF6 but Ryu is THE mascot of Capcom
Facts he’s like they’re Sonic The Hedgehog of Sega but For Capcom
Capcom only drops characters in SF who I like that didn’t originate from SF II.
Ryu’s not going anywhere.
He most certainly does not. Ryu is forever. It will never be Street Fighter without Ryu. I'm not even a Ryu player but I will boycott the fuck out of it.
Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Cammy, and Bison - Don't fuck with them.
no hes on a forever quest to be come the greatest and theres always someone out there ha hes kind of like mike tyson in a way
Nonetheless, he hasn't bitten anyone's ear off in a fight... yet.😅
LOL OVER?!
Akuma and Gouki are older than Ryu, and they still KIck Hard Ass!
What is happoening now is that DEI is trying to change focus of the game.
If he's not the ultimate warrior yet, then no.
It would be like DC retiring Superman.
Ryu STILL has to defeat Akuma. So that is a storyline there.
But, no. Ryu IS the face of Street Fighter. Luke and Alex have tried to be the new face of SF, but no accepts anyone by Ryu.
4:33 aaaaand… (struggles) tatsumaki “senpu-ya-yoo-koo” 😂
Idk why tf they decided to age the characters.
Wtf... bruh...
They could have been, should have neen. And hopefully WILL remain eternal.
Why in the hell are you aging your characters like that ?¿?
Players aging and still playing is a thinf, but who gives a fudge ?¿?
You caotured lightning in a botttle, and you want to destroy your own roster?¿? The roster that made you ?¿?
*RIDICULOUS !¡!*
His mr street fighter himself
all right hear me out guys , instead of retiring Ryu , Capcom release SF7 with Ryu as a 30$ day-1 DLC
Why would it be over? He's just getting started!
He would never do that...
They tried in SF3
Tried
It seems SF6 was the spearhead of taking away Ryu for a "modern audience" hero. Well, if they do it, SF7 will be a big flop. Even though, there are more organic and interesting ways to retire Ryu and Ken, and many others... but CrapCom must obey their newmasters, SBI/DEI/ESG/BlackRock-Vanguard...
Ryu will disciple some black nose ring lesbian chick and she will be the new face of Street Fighter. 😂
Why is everyone mad? Ryu should stay, but that doesn't mean the story of the game should revolve around him(SF2 didn't at least).
If you remove ryu and ken or all of the OG World Warrior in the next street fighter game it won't be the same take my word.
Gen: *laughs in internal bleeding*
In the Manga "Kame Kame Kame Kame Kame Chameleon"
Street fighter released in 87, with a development time 2 years. So from 85-87.
My favorite fighters in Smash Bros to pit against each other is Mario and Luigi vs Ryu and Ken
Hahaha!
He won’t. He’ll be fighting even if he had a flesh eating disease.
Do you support modern or classic controls?
I do a bit of both.. My mains are Guile, M Bison and Blanka all on classic, but if im just having fun I use modern Gief and JP to help with the mental stack
@@kenfajardo6953 So how is Ryu the foundation of playing the game then? Especially nowadays.
Maybe new adventures await yet even for an aging hero who probably won't be taking a full back seat like other masters.
my friend Street fighter without Ruy is Burnt traffic you are wrong find something else to say sorry
Absolutely not. Nor should Ken. It becomes a different game entirely without them. See what was almost Street Fighter III. No sir.
SF3 almost failed if it wasnt for Ryu & Ken
If they make a Street Fighter without Ryu, I wouldn’t bother playing. This would be like a Tomb Raider without Lara Croft. No thanks.
When developing Street Fighter III: New Generation, Capcom almost left out Ryu and I (with Sean Matsuda replacing us).
Andore Hugo and Yang Lee almost took the 9th and 10th roster spots.
Why capcom never focused on makoto more is beyond me. They had something really special with her and so much potential story wise.
Street Fighter without Ryu is like Legend of Zelda without Link, A mainline Metal Gear without a Snake or a PB&J without Jelly.
No but he does need some better moves
If Ryu or Ken Is Removed From Street Fighter, Sad To Say But It's Over For SF
When I was a kid I thought Ryu from street fighter was the same Ryu from Ninja Gaiden
Never! Next question?
(100th comment, btw).
Cringe ah comments…..the title is a gimmick to make u watch it ain’t THAT serious 😂
