- Backpack Hero Part 31 - Tote has a lot of interesting mechanics, and one of them is the sap carving. Match three in a row, and deal a burst of damage for free. What could go wrong? Also featuring the Purse mage build.

I think the Crisis Ring worked exactly as it said by wording: it "used" and disabled the Lunar Blade, but the Lunar Blade couldn't do anything because it didn't have enough mana.
Like you said, that may not be the intent behind it, seeing as it's the Crisis Ring, i.e. use everything in a crisis. My guess is it would have worked on weapons that use energy.
people forget that just because tote’s weaker, doesn’t mean tote can’t be fun to play as. Sure it’s frustrating, but it might actually challenge Tyler 😳
god forbid not everything in a game is perfectly balanced! oh no!
there's hypothetically an argument to be made that "if there are distinctly weaker/stronger characters then you're incentivized to focus on the good characters" but not only is that initially wrong, because it actually allows the player to choose if they just want an easier playstyle or if they'd like to challenge themselves to a more difficult character if they want to - but if every character in a game were perfectly balanced to each other then it'd effectively reduce the range of gameplay possible in a game that's supposed to be highly replayable
are all the survivors in risk of rain 2 equally good? no, there are VERY much big outliers! is every weapon in hades equally powerful? honestly I'm not good enough to know yet but they're sure as hell different from each other! is every starter deck in inscryption as good as each other? no, waterborne sucks and black goat setups are insanely cracked! but most people get bored if they only ever choose the good one. it's more important to have variety than it is to have some hypothetically perfect balance
especially in singleplayer games. like dude you're fighting AI enemies, it does not matter if tote's weaker because another player using purse isn't in the same game as you

@@hauntedsunsets Yep. Vampire Survivors is another perfect example, many of the characters are purposefully busted, some are deliberately underpowered. In a game where you do a lot of runs, it creates variety! You don't see people only playing Red Death.

@@hauntedsunsets this is why i like bad subclasses in tf2. When the game is filled with unbalanced and frankly extremely easy classes, using loadouts like bfb cleaver and boston basher on scout and also just ignoring the bfb aside from the boost, the gameplay becomes very challenging, a single mistake can send you to the respawn screen, but if you do everything perfectly, you become the fastest thing alive and a mad damage dealer, the risk is insane but the reward is greater knowing you conquered that risk, against the odds you still came out on top. Meanwhile sniper or soldier is literally just move your mouse and click on people simulator with barely any risk with high artificial and empty rewards, just number go up.
The equalizer is objectively a bad weapon, it requires you to get to extremely low health to use, meaning you are almost always a single stray bullet away from death, but the satisfaction of deleting any light classes you catch off gaurd, it makes all of the suffering worth it.
I dont understand people who play the meta strategy in any game. What satisfaction is there to be gained from playing the game in the way you know always works, as well as being the way everyone else plays? Do people really play games just to see the number go up? High score means nothing when you didnt have fun getting there, no work or problem solving is required to take the easiest path, it confuses me so much. Maybe im just the weird one, cause clearly meta strategies are popular for a reason, i just dont seem to be able to comprehend this reason 🤷♀️

the electric wand that does 5 damage for 1 mana is actually pretty good, and scales really well with buffs, ive had some crazy runs with it

Tote definitely has the best costumes on average but C'Thulu Purse is definitely the best in the game (from what I've seen anyway)

29:48 I believe for all researching 1 item can research two categories it fits in. (ie 1 rare arrow can research a rare arrow and a regular arrow) as long as they are on the same building. I do not know if this is intended. I have tried doing items with multiple categories but it only works for filling 2 research blocks

Did this. Grandmaster boss at second stage. Get warriors spellbook. Kill his mooks. Buff to 1k damage as he doesn't attack till 50%hp.

I think it's more of an issue of how synergistic the game is by design and she can't really do that. Having to pay energy for the discard is even more insane since a bad hand usually ends up in clutter and you losing/taking damage because of it
@@doresofrimentothere is a relic to make discarding free, but my best run actually has been where I fought the friend or foe which gave me a permanent weapon and then I built up from that
I think that’s kind of the purpose a weaker character naturally but a stronger character when it comes to overall deck/bag building

i'Ve got an idea for a legendary manastone: the dimensional mana stone. starts with 0/0 mana, but let's you combine other manastones into it. might be OP in endless runs, but for normal runs you have to find enough manastones first to make it worth and then you still need to build a network to connect multiple items :P
Its called void stone and was the third mana stone added to the game
It already exists, its called the black manastone. Starts with 1/1 and you can spend 1 energy plus 1 mana to "devour" all adjacent and diagonal manastones. It will get +1 storage and +1 mana use cost for every stone devoured

I think tyler still doesnt understand that when an item "uses" another item, it doesnt give it for free. It still uses the stamina/magic.
In order for it to be free, it needs to say that its free.

Toad seems so powerful but is probably much more difficult to optimize.. I've played the game a few times before official release, it's way more difficult than it looks.
She's not very powerful. She gets slightly better versions of certain things, but heavily reduced synergies and almost no ability to be consistent to pay off those stronger things
Tote has an invincibility combo that's exceedingly broken. Anything that cycles and triggers her book of nightmare every turn will trivializes a run. The only way to kill her is to apply more DOT than she can reliably sustain/clear in a single turn.
What i do sense is that she's not a character that provides immediate gratification. She takes a few turns to set up, is unwieldy to deck manage and dies early game when overwhelmed in ambush.
In short, this is an admittedly hard and unbalance character. As polarizing as it is, she's forcing the player to always make interesting and invested decisions.
The moment the other characters have a viable build going it remains virtually unchanged. Tote has to hands on wheels the entire time.

Some card cutting strategies for Tote. As it stands her starter deck is hot trash. Replacing it with higher damage and/or zero costs is a priority.
Good candidates are rusty blade, mother's blade and acorn cap.
Early game must pick? Mossy brick. Zero cost discard. Let it fall on the carvings to clear the field as a heavy item.
Most cost efficient card remover? Trade same item with rich rat. Only increments of 1 gold per carving to trade and not accept. 35 gold total to change/remove 7 cards vs plus 5 increments at merchant.
Most broken card. Book of nightmares. Get that an figure out an every turn activation for automatic win.

the one on the top left? that is a mana shard. When you use a mana item you can see the path the mana takes, if that path goes over the mana shard, it is emptied. So you want to put it the farthest away from your items, so it gets used first

Because sap was a whole thing when learing Tote in general was the goal. Now sap was the thing and energy builds were disregard.
It's a one track per run mind, each run the track changes, focusing on diving deep into one thing at a time.

How powerful is Tote? She's the only character with a 5 card hand i can win with. 3 cards if 2 mana stone have replenish. Otherwise it's frog idol, wizard boots, book of survival (status clear), an in hand weapon and the book of nightmares. Needs 4 mana to trigger
Enemies do zero damage every turn. Kill at leisure. This is a combo so absurd her play becomes exceedingly boring.
So i do other fun things with her. Like selling half her hp to the vampire for potions to clear a floor. It's good value. A regen potion is 21 hp over 6 turns. Her other damage potions will do between 21 to 30.

Theres no bug there lmfao. Manastones can be disabled. You need mana to use mana cost items, even indirectly.

The *mask* adds dodge when taking damage, it can be placed anywhere.

@@Run2127-- Not all helmets work the same way. Some activate when in the top row, some get better with rows beneath them, this one activates when taking damage.
