Even if the style isn't to your liking, you can't deny the amount of skill and effort it takes to create something like these guns. That's true for most things, actually. Look at 'modern' art. The common person often can't stand it, but will laud the creations of artists who take the time to create something unique and interesting.

    Two gun match idea!
Air conditioned range. Shoot from a couch. Enjoy a cigar and a brandy while a servant reloads the pistol, shoot again while a poor person holds the target, then retire to an early dinner.
I could really get into this.

    • @ravenslaves
      @ravenslaves 8 лет назад +47

+ra30r This match idea is for the..._refined_...classes. Those who are perfectly at ease with a fine pistol, a fine cigar, and a fine drink to steady the hand. It's also the way we drive. Mind you that this is strictly for the _refined_ class of people who have the abundant means to pay off the victims, the courts, and of course the papers.

    • @ra30r

+ra30r It's a well known fact that the judicial use of spirits will balance the humors in the body as will the healthful use of tobacco, to ease the mind and steady the nerves and hand. My phrenologist stands by this as a sound medicinal practice for sound mental hygiene. :)

The 1860 is most likely a Colt Signature series revolver from the 90s.Colt actually had these made by Uberti and then stamped the Colt name and serial numbers on them.So technically that's a $500 eye-talian revolver with $30,000 worth of engraving on it.That's not too uncommon with art though. The Mona Lisa is painted on to a wooden panel.

I find art in most firearms. Like the military rifles of WWI and WWII with their blend of iron and wood. Even today's firearms, there's beauty in a Wilson Combat 1911 or a Henry Golden Boy with it's American walnut and brass. I think that's what got me interested in firearms at an early age. My first handgun was a Smith & Wesson model 59 in nickel. I thought it was beautiful.

I don’t understand why people don’t like the reproduction models, I like the original ones as much as the next guy but I also like being able to use them so leaving the rare originals in the safe and shooting the reproductions is just smart if you ask me. Also now they are making repro’s of some of even more hard to find models which gives you a chance to shoot a piece of history without risking an actual historical piece. That newer Colt was a beauty before it got all blinged out but that thing is just absolutely stunning now.

+tisFrancesfault I think these two pistols do a lot to highlight the challenge of design for doing something like engraving a pistol. The first looks like a beautiful complete piece where everything seems to just fit together and look beautiful. As for the second one, well I find that each individual element displays fine craftsmanship and looks good in and of itself, but as a whole? Well honestly it kind of looks like someone slapped some gel stickers on it or something and called it a day.

I like the second one more. The first one looks too simple for me. Still beautiful though.

I always wanted to have a gun engraved but I end up spending the money on another gun.

These are both black powder aren't they? At least that 2nd one which is still cap-and-ball. You'd NEVER fire these then, you'd get every single crease filled with soot from the first shot.

i mean i can respect the workmanship that went into the American Eagle Colt, but it has to be one of the gaudiest and ostentatious pistols I've ever seen before

I really liked the engraving that was done to the H&H 4-gauge guns, it was subtle... but these guns are just gaudy.
The most "art" thing about guns is their overall design.
Just look at the Savage 1907 or Mauser HSc, just beautiful handguns.

I totally agree. Even though I don't care for the decorations and I think that good engineering is an art form by itself, those 4-bore shotguns were, in one word, GORGEOUS.
Almost all seemed to be tastefully hand-crafted masterpieces... these handguns, on the other hand, are too "baroque" for me, and of 0 worth when it comes to the mechanics.
But I still appreciate Ian bringing into our attention stuff we're not familiar with :)
