    I've done both methods of hydrating the WBS and I wasn't totally happy with the results until the instant pot method. Perfection with the perfect moisture content without any spilt grains. I use a window screen with a fan to remove all the surface moisture from the WBS. I do enjoy your video's.

    • @donnyjuan7532

      can you elaborate a little more please how did you use the insant pot to achieve perfect moisture content/?

    • @AviatorDave
      @AviatorDave 3 года назад +2

      @@donnyjuan7532I start the process of really cleaning the WBS and adding one tbsp of gypsum with hot tap water to the instant pot too just above the seeds. My instant pot has three levels of Keep Warm and any setting will work for this process. Because you are checking the al dente, mouth feel of the grains. You don't want the WPS to be too hard when you bite into the seeds or you don't want mush either. After practice you will find the perfect point in stopping the cooking process. (just like making pasta) I have a window screen frame that I made to support the weight of the wet seeds and I have it elevated just enought (2 inches) so that a 24 inch box fan will circulate the air above and below the seeds, and I keep the fan on it's lowest setting and rotate the screen (front to back) every few minutes to ensure that all the seeds surface is being dried. When I can pick up a hand full of seeds and they don't stick to my hand when I released them, then it's time to place in your jars. I prefer the pint size, because the mycelium will fully colorize before the top layer of seeds in the jar will dry out.

    • @donnyjuan7532
      @donnyjuan7532 3 года назад +1

      @@AviatorDave Thank you very much good Sir! I will definitely be trying your specific method next time around! It doesnt really seem to have hindered the process but when I boiled my WBS too many grains had burst it was just sticky and made me think the seed was still wet after a full day of drying with a box fan. BTW soon I will be experimenting with electirical apparatus to stimulate mycelial growth based on an episode of japanology on mushrooms that i had seen just figured i would mention if you might be interested in checking it out.. Thank you again for responding!

      I know this is from 3 years ago but I figured there's still a chance you could answer.
      But do you add one tablespoon of gypsum no matter how much WBS you put in the instant pot?
      And you didn't say what setting of keep warm that you use. I know you said you could use any one but just curious which one that you use?

    • @AviatorDave
      @AviatorDave 2 месяца назад

      @@jennak.8541 Time does fly by; it feels like yesterday that I was using the instant pot to process the WBS.
      I did use a tablespoon of gypsum, and it was the lowest setting for keep warm function to bring the WBS to perfect moisture content.
      I loved the results of using the instant pot, but the con was that it took too much time to complete the whole process, so I turned to during the Mossy Creek Mushrooms (Quick Tips: Grain Spawn Too Wet) trek which gives the same results.
      If you use Mason jars for sterilization of the grain don't let the straw pellets touch the glass during the cooking process, (I use chopsticks to place the pellets about a half inch from the bottom of the jar and in the middle of the grain).
      I shake the jars as soon as the as soon as its sterilization process has been completed. I shake the jars about every 30 minutes until the straw has dispersed throughout the container to my liking.
      I'm sorry for taken so long to reply but I've been overseas taken care of my home in Japan and the duck farm in the Philippines.
      I promise to be more responsive in the future.

    I notice that the soak and boil method seems to have gone out of favor. There is a reason we soak first, or back in my day; the process of soaking allows the endo-spores to germinate; cellular growth is much easier to kill than spores.

    • @TheTubejunky
      @TheTubejunky 3 года назад

      I agree with the "Soak and Boil method".
      Wouldn't pressure cooking the grains after soaking still kill those endo-spores or any growth from them?
      I wonder if the use of a pressure cooker used more often these days is why it's not favored.
      Anyhow have a good day sir.

    • @AaronAlso
      @AaronAlso 3 года назад

      @@TheTubejunky
      Well, boil is to get the right water content in the grains. Im told it can take up to 5 days at room temp for whole corn kernels to reach full hydration. The boil can bring this down to an hour.
      Commercial Mushroom farms dont use PCs at least not for grain spawn/bulk sub. They use industrial steam pasturization units. Pasturization is preferred, if you have the time. Because, the mycelium are a symbiotic species and thrive best when certain other benificial bacteria are present. One of the key steps to getting clean pasturization runs of grain spawn is to soak first.
      Because, atmospheric pressure affects boiling point and some grains are more clean than others, the soak and boil method was developed to standardize that 60min@15psi will yield the desired result.

    • @geeguh6638

      @@AaronAlso so are you saying to soak or not to? Are you talking about the soaking overnight vs boiling, which is preferred ?

    • @AaronAlso
      @AaronAlso 3 года назад +1

      @@geeguh6638
      It really isnt critical to soak first. You can just boil/ half cook and sterilze the shit out of it @15psi (250F) for 3 hrs at most, ever. As long as the moisture in the spawn is right, and the PC doesnt run dry. The grain spawn you choose makes a difference. Anything intended for human comsumption is usually UV sterlized in the packaging. Grains meant for livestock are not and require deeper more thurough sterilzation. It is generally considered better to pasturize bulk sub @170 for at least 2 hrs. Allowing some of the beneficial symbiotic organzisms a chance to coexist. This is where soaking is more important.

    Hello! So quick clarification. I'm probably reading into it a bit much, but felt a little ambiguous in my head. So either way you're going to soak them for the 8ish hours. After that, your boiling wasn't really necessary, right? It was strictly to get them hot to assist with the drying process? So I take it you aren't worried about overhydrating them? I'm planning to move on to WBS instead of always buying pre made grain and want to make sure I'm starting out right. Great videos!

    The sunflower seeds float so if you wanted to quickly skim 95% of them out it wouldnt be too hard :)

    Ive used wbs with cracked corn on it and it worked. It sucks though. It turns into a starchy mess and tends to.clump up n all
    .. I try to get it without. Also sunflower seeds wont hurt obviously get floaters out.. Itll.colonize fine on sunflower seeds as well

      I've been reading old forums and some sites insusting that sunfliwer seeds will cause contamination, but this makes no sense. If you are pressure cooking them into sterility with everything else, where is the contamination supposed to be coming from? I think this might be "bro science". Sounds plausible, so hobbyist don't put it to the test. If its not true, a whole lot of people are wasting a whole lot of time, because they read it on the interwebs.

    First timer here.
    Can you grow golden teacher spores on birdseed as I’ve read that some spores grow on different surfaces

      And also is this a cake? I’ve heard of so do I have to add this to the soiley stuff?? After the mycelium has grown or does the entire grow take place on the bird seed?

    If you're going to boil the grains anyway at the end for 5 minutes why not just boil them for the half an hour and skip soak? Is there an advantage to the Soaking method over boiling?

    • @masontroglen3413
      @masontroglen3413 2 года назад

      Soaking is for germinating hardy endospores. That way when you PC it kills the spores better. I know its tried and true. All though there's alot of diff ways to do wbs.. Some dont soak.at all and still works.. I go with soaking

    Hi...love your channel!!! First time doing soak and 5 min boil...any concern with th little amount of sand/ dirt left in birdseed? Used to do 3-5 min boil x 3 with lots of rinsing..too much time! Thanks for all u do!!!
