  • In Part 4 of Joh Jai's interview with Stu Raj, we hear how he thinks about language, culture, meanings and linguistic principles outside the boundaries of words and how he helps others develop this skill through the use of hand signs that he has developed himself.

He uses his hands to show the shapes of the Thai letters. Makes sense to the Thai audience because they know the alphabet and can see that he is using his hands to 'write' the letters in the air. His postures serve to show the relative locations of the vowels; they are like satellites orbiting the initial consonant of each syllable: duu ดู (vowel underneath the consonant) เสีย เ-สี-ย sia (to the left, above and right)

@pianoplr123 Thanks :) I've been wanting to put a series out on this for a while - and actually shot the footage already, but haven't edited down to my liking. As far as the 'body changing' according to language, I agree. When you use the language - the experiences you had, the muscles developed using that language etc kick in automatically. That's why I spend so much time when I teach Thai in trying to help ppl programme their bodies with language 'muscle memory' reactions.

Why wasn't I taught the same way from the start ?
    Would have made everything easier.

@facefaceface1000 Thank you - these kinds of words for these clips are the highest praise ... and are inspiring for me too! I have been so busy lately and neglected updating my clips / blog, but I realize that I really should be continuing to put stuff out there. Thanks.

Simply beautiful...but I didn't understand how closely the hand motions and gesturing are related to the sounds/alphabet. Does anybody else get it?

His hands form the shape of the Thai letters, his posture (high vs. low) indicates where the vowels are placed around the initial consonant of each syllable

@elvein1 They Teach Yourself series is an interesting beast. Some are crap, some are quite good and some are brilliant. The Teach Yourself Hindi by Rupert Snell in my opinion is one of the most brilliantly crafted language programmes I have seen within one book. Which language were you thinking of?

@crankdataquaman3055 Learning multiple languages ends up being easier than learning just one, because the differences and similarities between the languages end up synergising and working off of each other. For me, the most important ingredient is motivation / getting excited about learning. I have started up a Language and Mind Mastery group to help you with just that on my blog at stujay.com go in and drop your name and email address into the 'Join Now' section and you'll be on ur way!

It's funny how when the interviewer asked for examples of sounds and their colors, he seemed phased out.

Your second sentence was almost perfect. It should have been, "That makes language learning a lot easier", or "That makes learning a language a lot easier." Good job, though.
