  • Dallas Cowboys rumors today focus on Dak Prescott and the latest reporting on his future. Ian Rapoport says the Cowboys and Dak are not expected to get a contract extension done this offseason and that will potentially result in him hitting 2025 NFL Free Agency. Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News frames the Jerry Jones comments today differently, but what does Cowboys Report host Tom Downey think?

    Dak Prescott news from Ian Rapoport: The #Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year. Owner Jerry Jones said, “We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.” No indication a deal is coming.
    Here’s what Jerry Jones said today: “We are where we are. We have our contract, locked and loaded for this year. We can see as we move along how we are thinking - we, inclusive of everybody: us, Dak. And we’ll see what we do. I don’t have anything to report today.”
    The Cowboys rumors, then, are clear: this could be Dak Prescott’s final year with the Dallas Cowboys, putting the team in a precarious position at the most important spot on the field in 2025. Trey Lance will also be a free agent.

    Hi Tom. I hate Jerry and co. as much as the next guy, but I think they do have a plan as far as Dak is concerned. Putting all that cap hit stuff aside, I think that they have decided to make Dak show in 2024 that he can actually compete with the top quarterbacks in the league. I was watching that Packer playoff game. As soon as Green Bay scored that 1st TD I already had the same feeling as everyone here...Dak can't bring the Cowboys back. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights. As for Jerry's plan, he obviously doesn't want to pay Dak 60+ million per year and never get a whiff of the Super Bowl. I think that he wants to see, once and for all, if Dak is more than just a regular season quarterback. So here it is...Dak is in a contract year, so he will be motivated to play his best. If he does, and is able to inspire the rest of the team to do the same, then Jerry will want to keep him. Other teams may come looking, but Dak knows it's far more lucrative to play for America's Team than it would be any other team. On the other hand, if he continues to be unable to beat the quality opponents and lays another egg in the playoffs, then Jerry will eat the cap money and find a new option at quarterback, head coach, etc. It sucks, but there it is.

    The front office of the Cowboys is more of a problem than Dak. Everyone is saying Dak sucks, but he has great stats and a winning record except in the playoffs. And their last playoff loss was due to the defense more than Dak.
    Dak may not be worth 60 million, but he's also not the bad QB everyone wants to paint him to be, and the front office's dumb moves in the off season and last draft doesn't help him at all. They want him to fail.

Yet here we are dragging out contracts only to spend more in the long run.

      I don't think they'll end up spending more tbh. Even if he hits free agency next year the odds of another team signing him for 60mil a year seem pretty low imo. He is by no means a bad QB, but he isn't top 3 and shouldn't be paid as such

      @@danielhayes248 do you know how free agency works? Yes some desperate team will pay him $60 million. He was second in the mvp voting this year. That’s not top 3??? Deshaun Watson who was out of football for two years got paid like he was the best qb of all time by Cleveland. Dallas is going another 29 years without going to an nfc championship with the way Jerry jones runs his team. I’m a Dallas fan and it makes me sick to my stomach. They could’ve paid dak last year at about $45-$48 million but they decided to wait when the cap went through the roof to try and pay him. Sorriest GM of all time, hands down.

      @danielhayes248 Месяц назад

      @@amjedhatu542 lmfao yes im aware how free agency works LOL, I like Dak as a personality and as a player, but he is not a top 3 qb. Brock Purdy was 4th in MVP votes, and he's not a top 5 qb in my opinion. Just because he had a good season doesnt make him top 3 in the league like come on.. Jackson, Mahomes and Allen just to name 3 are all better than Dak is. You also have to consider what teams are in the market for a QB and can afford to pay ~25% of the TOTAL cap for the season to one single player. I would much rather they let him walk, take the 49ers approach and build out the rest of the team.

He wants to see how he can play this year and bank on himself even if he doesn’t win the Super Bowl, and still plays like a top five quarterback, he’s gonna get a mega contract somewhere else. But his ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl this year, and become the highest paid quarterback in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys. But he might be a little sick of the outside noise so he’s keeping his options open in case he doesn’t win this year. He’s still going to command a huge contract wherever else he goes.

    So what are the Cowboys options if they don't Trade him before the season start's ? That cap hit is close to 96 million over 2 seasons if they don't trade him or resign him to a contract extension now in the 2024 season why are they so undecided on what to do ?

    I think the plan is, JJ don't want to pay Dak another 4 year 250 mil at all. JJ wants to see Trey Lance in a full season under Mike and a full pre season. Might not be the best plan but that's probably what JJ wants. He rather pay a younger QB with arm talent Iike his than pay Dak another 250 mil

    It hurts the team as a whole, its handicappng the salary cap and not allowing more valuable pieces to put around him. I just don't understand the logic on both sides. This is why this team never gets over the hump, they don't have the front office and the money management skills with the cap to put the quality of team together. The 49ers, Eagles, GB..etc do whatever it takes to get better. We don't.

    I would like to argue in favor of the way Dallas is handling this contract. We have this supposed great qb who cant win big games. Why tie the franchise to someone for the long haul, especially if he flames out again this year. Dallas does not want to hand a huge portion of the salary cap to one person. At the end of the day, except for the superbowl champs, that extra cap space to 1 player makes absolutely no difference to 31 other teams. I think we should draft a 1st round qb every 5 years and then let them walk, or hopefully find a trading partner, which is what i think the cowboys are doing right now with Dak

    For once the Cowboys front office is taking an approach I agree with. Best just to let Dak play the contract out, and if he turns superstar, then pay him. If he decides to leave, you at least got a super bowl out of him. If you did not win the super bowl with him, then he`s not what you want anyway.

      How do you expect your quarterback to perform well and even make the playoffs when they have no starting RB and an offensive line thats in shambles and only one true target at WR. They are not helping anyone and certainly putting the team and QB at a deficit. Absurd is what this is.

    • @alexk2643
      @alexk2643 Месяц назад

      @@jitorres7450 he had 8 years to do that, now he must figure it out or he better start looking for a new team. Let’s not act like he hasn’t had talent around him throughout his career. He’s had ample talent (i.e., Amari Cooper, Ceedee Lamb, Zeke, Zack Martin, Tyron Smith, Dalton Shultz, etc.), but decided to throw interceptions when it really mattered.

    • @jitorres7450
      @jitorres7450 Месяц назад

      Again, wins are a team stat. He has had good players, yes. But as a collective, this team has never been balanced. They talk complementary football, but it's never seen in the playoffs. Always one leaning on the other. People don't seem to see that it's not just Dak. This team is not what it used to be. And it hasn't been since Jerry did away with Jimmy Johnson in the 90s.

    "N" - despite my reluctant response, I ultimately think they get a deal done - either a surprise breaking announcement we don't see coming, or after this season. They're calling France's bluff like last time. But like last time, they give in b/c at the 11th hour they know they have no better choice. They'll "overpay" for Dak to make it look like they didn't cave to France's strongarm tactics. If they do wait til after this season, they'll again realize they can't let Dak hit FA. In that case regardless of any outside offer, as long as Dallas produces an acceptable contract, Dak will stay put. We know it's a business, and if Dallas gives him no other choice he'll walk. But at the end of the day we also know Dak wants to be a Cowboy. As infuriating as their process makes us, I ultimately believe a deal is reached. And this whole attitude and route of not caving, and inaction not only with outside prospects but with our own superstars in recent years makes one thing glaringly obvious; this is all Cap Boi's doing. We know this because regardless of what you want to say about Jerry, when he was running the show, one thing you could never accuse him of was being a stingy tightwad. He wanted to get an outside target(or splash player) he made it happen. When it came time to pay, no check was too big to write. So if we end up "overpaying" for anyone, it's because we weren't proactive. That's Stephen. If we refuse to sign or trade for notable players and bargain shop, that's Stephen. If it looks like we couldn't care less, that's Stephen. If they site the cap as BS justification for their inaction, even if Jerry echoes that narrative, we still know it's Stephen. Again we know this b/c when Jerry ran the show, for all his faults, this is never how he operates. Jerry was always seen as the risk taker. When Jerry ran the show, he may have been ambiguous with his stance, he may have been non committal, he may have referenced cap restraint, but that was only because he didn't want to give anyone any indication that could be leveraged. Then out of nowhere he'd make the big deal or sign/resign the big player(s). He made the move. Because we know Jerry never wanted, or appear to lose a deal. He made his bones on winning deals. This whole swing of operating from one extreme to the other didn't happen until Stephen took over. So when and if any blame is to occur, at the heart of it will always be the fault of Stephen
