Thanks so much for sharing this. It's damn near impossible to stumble across old stuff like this online even though people assume everything is easy to come by on the internet. I bet even GMA doesn't keep these old tapes. It's rare to see the kind of authenticity they shared on screen, rare enough that you take it for granted sometimes. Carrie was so young and uninitiated as an actor that she couldn't help but come across as a genuine little girl, and you can tell from the way Sigourney talks about it that it affected her own acting. And they shared that authenticity offscreen too. I was a few years younger than Carrie when the movie released, and it wasn't hard to see why she naturally gravitated to Sigourney because she's a legend. Yeah, I saw a dark R-rated sci-fi action horror film as young boy (80s kids were built different, haha) and in some sense it was easier to relate to the intensity of the movie because it was like I was seeing the story through Carrie's perspective as a fellow kid, and I felt exactly the same way towards Ripley that Newt did. 🥰

They might as well have come up with a reason why Newt couldn't be woken up from the cryopod, like a malfunction that could only be repaired elsewhere as they didn't have the tech in the prison planet. Ripley could've had a monologue by the pod and at the end Weyland would've hauled her away to fix it. Then it would have opened the possibility to have Newt back as an adult for Alien 4 .

Carrie is surely due some credit. A lot. Because if her character hadn't worked, the whole movie would've been dragged down by it. I hope they never told her that 🙂. But due credit MUST also go to Cameron and his team. To get that kind of performance out of a kid who has never acted professionally before, requires a very special kind of talent which some directors have (Richard Donner) and some do not (George Lucas). Working with kids well, and getting this kind of performance out of them, is a gift. Spielberg is another that clearly knows how to work with kids.
I read that one of the reasons Carrie got the part was that she never smiled during auditions and that was what they were looking for as the other child actors were coached to smile all the time. This is the reason Joan Lunden seemed to be having a difficult time pulling answers out of an eight year old child. By the way, Carrie never pursued acting as an adult, but is now a school teacher in her community.
If you had just turned this interview on without knowing the subject matter you’d think Ms Weaver and her daughter were being interviewed … Great relationship they have ..
Exactly my thought too. Their chemistry in the movie was uncanny, the parts were so well-written and well-performed, and seeing it continue off-screen is really heartwarming.
