  • Here I step you through the decision making process on how to buy a microscope for amateur or hobby use. This is a beginner's guide to help people start microscopy as a hobby.
I will talk about the following points:
    1. Stereo microscope or compound microscope?
    2. Which category of microscope?
    3. Used or new?
    4. Infinity or 160mm?
    5. LED or halogen light?
    6. Which features?
    7. Which microscope head?

Great video. I wondered whether there any rankings of brands and within brands, models that are available for would-be microscope buyers.

Thank you so much for your video series. I have learned so much. I just received my Omax microscope and have been playing with it to find microbes in my soil. I have something on the image that is floating above the slide. I think it is dirt but I don't know enough to diagnose where it is. Your advice to "not clean" my microscope has made me hesitant to start willy nilly q-tipping everything. My question is-do I send it back or what? The image looks like a string with a glob next to it. Thanks for your help.

I've seen many of your videos and I've just ordered my microscope yesterday. It has truly been very informative and I'm binging on every one of them now.
I got one with "higher end" features like infinity plan objectives and koehler illumination. Surprisingly, I didn't pay too much (EUR 470), which is just a tad higher than the midrange ones mentioned.
I think it's worth the little extra cost too, since I want to do photography with it. I have quite a bit of experience in astrophotography, and image quality is something I'm very particular with (especially off-axis sharpness). Figured going with non-plan achromats and upgrading would cost me significantly more.

Personally I wen't the cheap route with it and got a monocular microscope and attached a microscope camera to it. Now im looking to replace the stage with a mechanical one and add some robotics so i can adjust the stage with a remote.

Hello channel creator! I recently bought a Swift Stellar 1 Pro Infinity microscope for hobby use. Honestly, I did not expect such a good quality for the middle segment. I'm not sure if this is a real professional microscope. At first I wanted to buy Stellar 1 with a 160mm tube, but suddenly I saw that there is Stellar 1 Infinity. The choice was made to infinity. Although it is more expensive than Stellar 1 with a 160mm tube. To be honest, I have no regrets!

finally got myself a SWIFT SW380T, waiting for its arrival. Amazon had lowered the price to $209. No camera yet, but plan to get one that may also work with a telescope.

This video is in my other channel (episode 103 and 104). It is the Swift SS-110, which I reviewed here:
      ruclips.net/video/gHzC_aq7ksc/видео.html
It is good for its price, but the image quality is lower with the 40x objective, also because the microscope does not have a condenser.

Hi Oliver, I would like to know if fluorescent lighting is UV safe. I have a National model 156 witch has fluorescent bulb. Nobody can answer the safety question not even manufacturers. Will I have long term eye damage from UV? Help, help. Allen S.

Have you seen the Indian brand 'Radical?' They look to be of a similar quality to Swift and Amscope etc. but cheaper than all.

Many microscopes look very similar. Maybe they are the same, but rebranded under a different name. This is quite common.

I can see very little detail with my left eye(legally blind in that eye)..Is there any benefit to getting anything other than a monocular microscope in my case?

    • @MicrobehunterMicroscopy
      @MicrobehunterMicroscopy  3 года назад

Most better microscopes these days are either binocular or trinocular anyway. With a trinocular, you can more easily attach a camera to give you a live view on a computer screen, which might be easier to look at. You can also connect a camera to a binocular or monocular, instead of an eyepiece. Benefits of monocular are generally lower cost.
