  • In this video I talk about some characteristics that are commonly found in research microscopes, but not so much in others.

    🔬 MICROSCOPE RECOMMENDATION
I receive many questions on which microscope one should buy. I recommend the following models for amateur microscopy (Affiliate Links to Amazon):
    Children’s/Introductory - Swift or National Optical SS110: amzn.to/2WdS4PX
For Amateurs - Swift SW380T (with phototube) or Swift SW380B: amzn.to/3fu7aIY

Bump into an amateur microscope => Microscope hurt.
Bump into a research microscope => You hurt.

A research microscope typically has a more powerful lamp, like 100 watt halogen. It is required if you’re using contrast enhancing techniques like phase contrast or D.I.C. a lot with 40x and 100x objectives, especially if you’re also using microphotography. With a less powerful lamp the view will be too dark and exposure times too long. In the Olympus BH2 series for instance the BHS, which was the research version, has such a big lamp housing while the BHT has not.

If you look in old biology textbooks like from the 50's, the textbook would usually be biased in their choice of microscope brand. Example, I was looking in two bacteriology books published in 1950 and 1947. One of the books was purely Carl Zeiss, while the other was only Bausch and Lomb. I wish they did this more today. I think it would infulence the reader to a certain brand.

I have a problem with my microscope. The focus rail is too loose and the lens slowly drifts down under its own weight. I tried looking for a way to tighten the rail but could not find. Must admit that it is a really old microscope. Any help would be appreciated :)

Some microscopes allow for tightening if you turn the focus knobs on the left and right against each other (opposite directions). Other microscopes have a ring next to the focus knob to tighten. But be careful, do not use too much force so that you do not break anything.

In my case, my microscopes don't have eyepieces at all (fully electronic), so you need to find 2 more rules for me!

Stereo microscopes seem to be the less interesting ones - mostly used in circuit board repair. Rarely you can find something spectacular made with them.
Well, except this guy here microsculpture.net/
I believe he uses stereo microscope lenses and focus stacking.

That is a great site, stunning photos, but he is not using a stereo microscope, no need or use for that level of detail. Instead he uses photo stacking of images captured with a single microscope objective adapted to his camera, and a rail system allowing for precise movement on a single axis.

much blah blay for nothing.....Today the big brands are big because there prices are big. The researchmicroscops of the 1980 today are sold for a few bugs and are better than the new microscops. Who needs infinity, motorisation or fluorescenc. If you want a good microscope then buy a REM instead of a car.....
