- Bonanza - Episode 10 - The Magnificent Adah - When an actress named Adah Menken comes into town, Ben considers marrying her, but his sons have other ideas. Meanwhile, trouble arrives when Adah's old lover, washed-up heavyweight boxer John C. Regan, comes along seeking his former glory. Written by Anonymous on IMDb.com
The Magnificent Adah
Director: Christian Nyby
Writer: Donald S. Sanford
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre:Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 14 November 1959 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Adah Isaac Menken and her touring company come to Virginia City to perform the reknowned "Mazeppa". Intrigued by the picture of a naked woman riding horseback, Hoss and Joe are eager to see the show. They sneak out of the house and hurry to the performance only to be pulled out of line by their older brother. Fearing they're about to be reprimanded, Adam scolds them for being late and hopes the best seats aren't gone. During the show, Hoss is confused. The leading lady doesn't look anything like the woman on the poster. Joe says the woman on the poster is playing the part of a man, which just confuses Hoss more. After the show the boys go to the saloon and Hoss is dying to know if she really was naked when she rode out on the horse. After some gentle teasing, Adam assures him that she wore tights. Reviews:
"This episode involves a real person from Western history. Adah Issac Menken was a famous actress of the time and performed the spectacular "Mazeppa" around the world. It was well known because she played the role of the leading man and was strapped "naked" to a horse. She wore tights, but it was scandalous at the time and drew crowds. She was married three times. John Heenan, the "Benecia Boy", was her second husband and physically abused her. At the time of her performance in Virginia City in 1864, she was married to her third husband. Born in 1835, she would've been younger than Adam and maybe a year older than Hoss. Definitely not the older woman she appears in this episode." Written by jennifer-730 on IMDb.com

The Cartwrights have been shot, beaten, maimed, and tossed about, but like Wiley Coyote, they bounce right back to do it all over again. I still enjoy this show, even after all these years.
Hasn’t little Joe been shot 40 or 50 times. Lol
@@philipstanco6011No, half of 40.
@@didirosie3226 Yeah I was exaggerating but still……
@@philipstanco6011
I think he’s been shocked the most because he’s the most aggressive of the three brothers I think half of only been shot about two times, and Adam about the same
But, the girlfriends hardly ever survive.
There are so many terrific scenes between the three brothers in these early episodes. And the rapport between Hoss and Little Joe is magical. And then add Adam to the mix and you have an acting bonanza 😉
Like what you did there👏👏👏👏
I must admit, I also watch the episodes over & over again!
Every day I watch Bonanza on my DVDs over and over again
Me too every day. I have to get my Bonanza fix ❤.
Me too. My night time routine ❤
They're always making Hoss fight. It's like unleashing the Hulk sometimes.
How young they all were in this early show: Ben, as always, offers the strange wisdom that sometimes clouds love's true view (or a man's for that matter). Little Joe looked truly not more than 21 or 22, all were thinner, leaner, and even Hoss's hat style had yet to come to the one we know. The episode showed how much promise the show had for a long future. Thanks, Grjingo!
Joe looked more like 18 then❤
Joe was supposed to be 17 in the first season
I used to enjoy going over to my grandparents, because I could watch this in color. Back before my parents got a color television.
Hard to believe there was a time when watching tv didn't rot your brain, but actually enriched your experience of life.
One day last year I got sucked into an episode of Bonanza, watching the show for the first time. This was the episode. Definitely one of my favorites!

The first season was just so beautiful to look at. The color palettes and design were just so.

Back when the Cartwrights used better looking weapons and when they wore different clothes. I miss Little Joe's blue jacket with black hat it was alot better than the default outfit he stuck with after Season 3.
@@coltgun876true, i hated that green jacket lol
my coworker used to watch this show , what gets me is that even a rerun episode he used to watch it like it was the first time he was watching it , he got me on the program of watching western , we had cable at the workshop , and he has passed away , god bless his soul.

May your friend rest in peace and I hope his death didn't make you stop watching this amazing tv show.

Grown men having to sneak out of the house, like they're little boys.

Adam knew Little Joe was picking up the tickets. He was waiting for them outside the theatre.
I totally agree with you!!!
A rare time Hoss is wearing another hat besides his famous 10 gallon hat! LOL!
when he plays at being so wrapped up in the show...yeah, I know how he feels...
He wore a derby
Its easy to see why generations luuuv this show....my Mom, my son, and I watch together. All the tech now and they still can't match the heart felt chemistry of these early shows.
I was 6 years old when Bonanza came out! I still watch EM 7 nights a week NOW! Great! ❤😂🎉 .
LMAO Hoss and Little Joe have to sneak out of the house!
Adam did too lol
I know. Aren't they grown men? Joe is probably 21, because he's in a saloon drinking, Hoss 25/26 and Adam 30
@The Strawberry Yeah, that makes sense sweetie. Thank you 😊
@@slee706 In the first season he's supposed to be 17 even though ML was older than that of course.
Also, I think the sneaking out was supposed to show a level of class that they weren't normally off to a nudie show! (Which is what Hoss thought he was going to.)
@@BlackangelKatakuri One of the many reasons Pernell found the show ridiculous in many ways. He WASN'T wrong!
While I think the later seasons got a little silly as they ran out of ideas (there were still several great episodes) these early episodes were pure magic. Great writing, awesome characters, and surprisingly complex plots! This was a one of a kind show that can't be redone or replaced.
Also lucky Adah! She got to kiss Adam Cartwrite!!!!!!! He was my first tv crush and he's still so handsome.
@rjhollenbeck ... Pernell Roberts died January 24th, 2010.
@@daisycassidy2448 I know he died in 2010, I ment that he's still awesome to watch in shows no matter how old they are.
@@daisycassidy2448 Actually, he was my favorite.
Mine too, and I was kind of too young to think on those things then. Also Steve McQueen was boyish in expressions and easier to relate to at that age. I watched Have Gun will Travel, but never understood it so started watching episodes this year. Funny, Mikey Dolenz of the Monkeys was Circus Boy back then, and my older sis would drop me in front of that one...but I always liked the westerns for some reason. Whole families gathered to watch Bonanza in those days.
I liked the seasons with Adam in it Seasons 1-6. After Pernell left the show kinda got stale for me.
"But Paw...she's an actress!" How times have changed. Now they practically get treated like gods
Yes!!!!
Actress and whore were pretty much the same word once upon a time.
Hey how are you?
Personally I feel the original thoughts are still correct.
@@refich Still are
Ben Cartwright, there are as many kinds of love as there are women, wow serious wisdom, for a sitcom in the day's bigone. Thank you for these wonderful episodes of old school westerns. And the love of family, a father, and his three vivacious son are all from different beautiful mothers.
Hi drama, hardly a sitcom.
Bonanza was not a Situation comedy!
Bonanza was more western than Sitcom Particularly that Episode! Trust me I'm 69 years old, I was only 6 when it came out in 1959 , I've seen Em all many times and still Love the ones with Pernell Robert's and Dan Blocker !.
Bonanza. It's genre is defined as a Western. Not a sitcom or high drama.
Bonanza came out when I was 6 years old! It was more a Western than a Sitcom !
Bonanza what a good Western series bonlin .
You are right Linda!!!!
j'adore la réaction du bonhomme quand il voit les trois cartrwight débarqués avec le sourire qui signifie "Coucou c'est encore nous"
The way that man hurt little Joe in this episode
Love how Adam told Hoss, "Don't fight him wrestle him!"
The brain and the muscles. They are unstoppable 😊
So this is what drove Otis to drink.
Otis escaped out of Mayberry jail love Adam hoss little Joe Ben amazing loving family men
He's a professional fighter, which makes his hands lethal weapons. He don't need to be jailed, he ought to be maimed for taking advantage of common citizens.
The old west? No such thing as his hands are lethal weapons. It wasn't even a concept it those days. It was a way of life, you stand up for yourself, physically fight if you have to, maybe have a beer after. You're either friends, enemies or dead. Either way, the hard life goes on.
Adah, playing Little Joe like a drum priceless!
Joe was almost blinded by that boxer he abused her why shede go back to him
This was such a quality show.

The man John very abusive to her and nearly blinded little Joe
One of my favorite western series.
Another great wester! Always loved the show!💥👍
He had a great singing voice.
Best episode ever thank you. I grew up with Bonanza
Little Joe looked like Otter pouring champagne for Mrs. Wormer in "Animal House"!!
🤣
A lot of excitement in that saloon
P.S. Actually, the ending of this episode was very weird too. That boxer who almost killed and blinded Little Joe should have been thrown in jail!
Great movies old classic ones i love it
My man Hoss going MMA on a pro boxer. The perfect prequel to Gracie jujitsu!
Wow - Hoss had on some actual jeans in this early episode!
at 23:45 that is the kind of respect sons and (daughters) had for their parents back then, now there is very little respect for parents, that is one of the reasons the family is the way it is now ( disunited)
Bonanza, I Make Sure I Look At Each Day 2 Episodes 👍🌷
adam. the worry of an older brother. I am falling more in love with him.
fun fact: this is the 10th episode to feature a burning map in the opening credits

Love this show.
Very good early episode reflecting the unity of the Cartwright males in the face of a desirable member of the opposite gender, played with considerable verve by the curvaceous Rosalind Russell. Unmissable, Thanks for sharing!
Ruth Roman, actually.
Ben: Everything's gonna be alright. Your pa's right here.
Also Ben - 3 seconds later: Leaves
Looks like Joe passes out again.
Poor little Joe :(
Indeed!! Caught off guard..
do not fight for a woman who is not worth it
But men do
Beta men do
She's s for the streets
No woman is worth it.
Don’t disrespect Little Joe like that 😂
My spouse got me hooked. Lol 😆
What exactly was magnificent about Adah? She was an aging middling looking person with a rasping voice.
That man hurt little joe and ben said 'adam, youre brother may be blind' 😢❤
Don't hang him boys. I love all these episodes. Do anyone know who the guy is they were joking with? Isn't that Otis Campbell, the drunk, that played on Andy Griffin Show aka Mayberry. He made me laugh when he ran away 😅😊😅.
Hal smithvwas his name
They're grown men and have to sneak out of home. Nuts
Was the possibility of being hurt and knowing where everyone was going...and early early 4am hard work...and even into about 5 decades back it could be " my house my rules."
It was a different time. Sadly, people can not see it in the lens of the 1800s. They only see things the way they are now. That is very sad! The world greatly changed after 1914.
Good stuff like always.
Modern comparison: The Cartwright boys look mortified-like Daddy just walked in with the hot teacher!
....I hated to see that Lobster go to waste...wonder what else was on that cart ;)?
Serving lobster is anachronistic. It was still considered peasant food in the 1860s.
It started to become more mainstream in the 1880s. It didn't become a delicacy until WWII, rich people ate it because it wasn't rationed.
Ada came in to soon behind a heartless old man beating a kid dang near to death and if I were ada I'da kicked him, for sure love would haved died he would not be a man by my eyes at all beating lil Joe like that the beast got off easy joe almost lost his eye sight and she was just as bad as the creep her compassion went all out for the man no sorrow for Lil Joe or Ben or Hoss
Yeah, but we don't find out if Adah KNEW about Little Joe.
@@CathyKitson Of course she knew about him. Why else did she come running over to the saloon to make sure Ben didn't kill her poor little prize fighter that nearly blinds and kills innocent young boys half his size and age. She and him were perfect for each other. Two total low life scumbags completely self absorbed and focused on nothing but themselves.
She's for the streets

"Little Joe if you can see me blink your eyes two times" Um, he is able to talk, why don't you just ask him if he can see.
But Ben told him not to talk and perhaps it was painful. But yes, you're right.
Right. If he can say "Pa" four times he can say yes or no once.
😂😂😂
Adam Cartwright. I love you.
Otis!
Yessssirrr
Good catch!
I remember this episode from many years ago. It's hard to forget.
Loved this episode of Bonanza.
That was cruel how they frightened that man
You're absolutely correct!
This heartless cruelty and bullying by the Cartwright clan is seen often enough throughout the series' run to give pause to any accolades of goodness to this family
@@GathKingLeppbertI No, the Cartwright Brothers were not cruel.....except in the opening to this episode when they were pretending to hang OTIS of all people! That was a bad thing to write in the script.
Yeah, I don't love the cartwrights of the first few episodes. Thankfully they sorted the characters out later.
Those men are amazing...caring about their Pa....

I guess we better have a talk with our pa!!!! Love the Cartwright's!!! I've always been wanting to be a part of the Cartwright family!!!
Lorne Green was 45 years old here.
Now I'm well older than that.
True statement women are a different as love is different
Lorne said he was a 40-year-old father with three 30-year-old sons. I would have guessed him to be older than 45.
@@beckyshell4649 Hi Becky Bonanza was a great show but had any bloopers due to the fast production process,
@@beckyshell4649 Michael was only in his early 20’s ; so Lorne must have been exaggerating
Blooper, plastic cap popped off the champagne.
So, the big guy beat little Joe to near death, with no provocation, and they just left him be at the end? No taking the brute to jail or court?
I know, it makes no sense at all. And Ben was even standing there with a big smile making excuses for why it was perfectly reasonable for Adah to be fawning over the big bully brute Regan after he nearly blinded and killed Little Joe. Completely ridiculous. Whoever wrote this story was an idiot.
Good point! The ending was ridiculously stupid and nonsensical.
Poor Ben can’t get married to save his life.
Good, He doesn't need to
He,s already had 3 wives on this show.
That's why Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe are only half-brothers.
There's been flashback episodes concerning each of Ben's 3 wives.
People are talking about how she was a fool to go back to her ex-husband, which, yeah, she was, but you have to admit that if she married Ben, it would be a pretty weird dynamic. I mean, having at least one of your new step-sons in love with you is pretty awkward.
Cute story👍 👍👍✌😍🥰😘😁😁❤
Some of them are. But this one was just plain ridiculous for many reasons as people are stating in these comments.
No one better mess with little Joe

Well, Adam kissing that woman was just plain weird. The rest of this particular episode was okay.
Yours is the best for captions . Do you have plans for the latter series? I haven't seen many after Pernell Roberts left.

"There´s many kinds of love."
LOL, she told Ben that Adam had been in her room but covered for Joe.
OK, let’s get real. There is no way in the world that woman would turn down the offer to marry the richest man in Nevada.
My Hoss got him!!!!!!!
Thanks for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
Twisted episode .
Silly opening but still funny, lol. Wish I could scare off trespassers from my property like that.
In 1800 you could
As Mark Twain noted, Adah may have been naught but a shape artist, but she was a great shape artist.
does that woman deserve anyone to help her?..she lets the guy beat her...lets him beat others...she is guilty of knowing he does that...she stands by him....the point is any PERSON or animal that is being abused deserves help.....but NOT women like this one who encourages it....that must be made obvious
Adam's most classic line when he tells Hoss, "Don't fight him wrestle him!"
Hoss was throwing too many haymakers. lol
