As an open water swimmer, I feel like it’s really important for everyone to realize that Kara and Nate were able to do that without swim training because (a) they are super fit and experienced with facing intense physical and endurance challenges and (b) they had a safety team entirely focused on them who continually coached them all the way to the beach. I say this because every year there are an awful lot of underprepared swimmers who attempt the Alcatraz swim in big races or group swims who need rescuing. If you cannot go into this in the same conditions as you just saw in this video, don’t give up on ever doing the swim but definitely postpone and TRAIN first.

Now imagine how the men from the prison did this and how desperate they must’ve been to escape. No training, no wetsuits and probably poor nutritional diet for the duration of their stay in the prison.
      Insane

Why not try it with flippers first ? But...awesome episode. Plus,I'd backstroke/float to catch my breath...that's how I passed my scuba test(long time ago).

Ditto this. Also not shown: when you swim in a large event, there is the additional chaos of hundreds of other bodies churning up the water around you or even swimming over you. One year, we swam through a school of jellyfish and a few people around me got stung and panicked. Thank goodness for the kayakers. Nothing beats that moment of calm before the start though when you're bobbing up and down off Alcatraz with the GG Bridge in the distance. What a feeling. :)

Kudos! :) Thanks for noticing and commenting about this. We were the pilots and escorts for Kara and Nate's swim. I should point out that earlier this year we put together a prep plan for Kara and Nate, which included a practice swim, etc. Due to their schedule, it did not work as planned, but since we had angel swimmers and we shifted the date to a day when the ebb (current) was lighter, conditions were such that we felt we had a good chance for their attempt to be a success. The safety of swimmers is absolutely paramount to us, and with 18+ years of San Francisco open water experience, we managed things pretty tightly. Our large group swims here definitely have much to be desired, which is why we only offer small groups/solo swims and vet all of our swimmers before taking them out. Training and preparation are also very important, as you point out. Our thanks go out to Nate and Kara for listening to our request that safety be a priority in this video. We all have a responsibility to keep open water swimming safe and enjoyable. Thanks again! Enjoy!

FUN FACT: I learnt this when visiting Alcatraz... prisoners got hot showers (it was one of the very few or even the only prison that did this) so the difference between the water temperature of the shower and the temperature of the bay would be greater. This made it even harder for them to make that deadly swim!

Moreover i feel like a lot of people who are doing that are underestimating the salty water and the temperature, because even if you are moving your hands will go numb after some time and if you panic in that stage during the swim you will be in mortal danger.

I don’t know if Kara still edits these videos, but I work in the film industry, and they are professional quality. They are edited exceptionally. They tell the story in a seamless and entertaining way. Drama in the right place. Comedy in the right place. Great inserts and montages. Well done.

I think they outsourced in a while ago, maybe 1-3years ago if I remember correctly.

If I understand correctly, they outsource the initial run-through of footage, but Kara still fully puts together the videos. She posts about editing on Instagram Stories most weeks.

That was crazy. The level of natural athleticism you both have is amazing. You never did any real open water swims and you attempted this? Sure, mental game will take you far, but only just so far...It's incredibly impressive you were able to do this. I do worry about risks you may take to keep upping the game, either because you are addicted to seeking your breaking point or because you feel like you need to do it for the channel.

I’m not sure it’s an “irrational” fear - swimming in deep, dark, murky waters with strong currents and sharks. Seems rather reasonable to have concerns. Also important to be fit and have support as others have commented. But good on you both for doing something so challenging! But maybe don’t do it again says the mom in me;)

As a 55th birthday challenge, I swam a mile and a half in open water in the Caribbean. The only difference was the water temperature was 76° Congrats guys.

For me who often gets up at 4.30am to swim miles before school in cold, open water this looks easy but, for people who have very little open water experience this is a massive challenedge and they did really well to eachieve this! keap up the good work guys. ❤

I'm a long distance swimmer as well but I used to do it in lakes. I did however get advanced certification for SCUBA in the bay area water so I know how cold it is..
